ABSTRACT

To improve the selective separation performance of silica nanofibers (SiO2 NFs) for cesium ions (Cs+) and overcome the defects of Prussian blue nanoparticles (PB NPs), PB/SiO2-NH2 NFs were prepared to remove Cs+ from water. Among them, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) underwent an alkylation reaction with SiO2, resulting in the formation of a dense Si-O-Si network structure that decorated the surface of SiO2 NFs. Meanwhile, the amino functional groups in APTES combined with Fe3+ and then reacted with Fe2+ to form PB NPs, which anchored firmly on the aminoated SiO2 NFs surface. In our experiment, the maximum adsorption capacity of PB/SiO2-NH2 NFs was 111.38 mg/g, which was 31.5 mg/g higher than that of SiO2 NFs. At the same time, after the fifth cycle, the removal rate of Cs+ by PB/SiO2-NH2 NFs adsorbent was 75.36% ± 3.69%. In addition, the adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics of PB/SiO2-NH2 NFs were combined with the Freundlich model and the quasi-two-stage fitting model, respectively. Further mechanism analysis showed that the bond between PB/SiO2-NH2 NFs and Cs+ was mainly a synergistic action of ion exchange, electrostatic adsorption and membrane separation.

ABSTRACT

The goal was to explore the effect of interleukin-6 (IL6) and C reactive protein (CRP) on malignant melanoma (MM) using two-sample Mendelian randomization. Methods: Data for this study were obtained from the IEU Open GWAS project website for genome-wide association study data (GWAS) on interleukin-6, C reactive protein levels and malignant melanoma. Inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was mainly used and supplemented with MR-Egger regression and weighted median. Finally, horizontal multivariate validity and heterogeneity tests were performed to assess the stability and reliability of the results. Results: The results of univariate two-sample MR analyses showed no significant effect of CRP on MM: inverse variance weighting method (OR=0.999, 95% CI: 0.998-1.001, P=0.343), MR-Egger regression (OR= 1.000, 95% CI: 0.998-1.001, P= 0.180), and weighted median method (OR= 0.999, 95% CI: 0.997 to 1.000, P= 0.583), and weighted model (OR= 0.999, 95% CI: 0.998 to 1.001, P= 0.328). Also,IL-6 had no significant effect on MM: inverse variance weighting method (OR= 1.001, 95% CI: 0.999 to 1.002, P=0.461), MR-Egger regression (OR= 1.000, 95% CI: 0.997 to 1.004, P= 0.910), weighted median method (OR= 1.000, 95% CI: 0.998 to 1.002, P= 0.749), and weighted mode (OR= 1.000, 95% CI: 0.998 to 1.002, P= 0.820). Conclusion: There was no causal relationship between C-reactive protein and IL-6 on the risk of malignant melanoma.

ABSTRACT

Streptococcus pneumoniae infection is a major public health concern with high morbidity and mortality rates. This study aimed to evaluate the serotype distribution, antimicrobial resistance changes, clonal composition, and virulence factors of S. pneumoniae isolates causing pneumococcal disease in northeast China from 2000 to 2021. A total of 1,454 S. pneumoniae isolates were included, with 568 invasive strains and 886 non-invasive strains. The patients from whom the S. pneumoniae were isolated ranged in age from 26 days to 95 years, with those ≤ 5 years old comprising the largest group (67.19%). 19 F, 19 A, 23 F, 14, and 6B were the most common serotypes, of which 19 A and 19 F were the main serotypes of invasive and non-invasive S. pneumoniae, respectively. CC271 was the most common multilocus sequence type. Serotype 14 had the lowest expression of cbpA, rrgA, and psrP genes, but expression levels of 19 A and 19 F genes were similar. All isolates were sensitive to ertapenem, moxifloxacin, linezolid, and vancomycin but highly resistant to macrolides, tetracyclines, and cotrimoxazole. Simultaneous resistance to erythromycin, clindamycin, tetracyclines, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole was common pattern among multidrug-resistant isolates. Non-invasive S. pneumoniae had higher resistance to ß-lactam antibiotics than invasive strains. 19 A and 19 F were the main strains of penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae. The resistance rate of ß-lactam antibiotics decreased from 2017 to 2021 compared to previous periods. Including PCV13 in the national immunization program can reduce the morbidity and mortality rates of pneumococcal disease effectively.

ABSTRACT

As alternatives of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), hexafluoropropylene oxide dimeric acid (HFPO-DA) and trimeric acid (HFPO-TA) have been detected increasingly in environmental media and even humans. They have been shown to exhibit reproductive toxicity to model species, but their effects on human remain unclear due to the knowledge gap in their mode of action. Herein, (anti-)androgenic effects of the two HFPOs and PFOA were investigated and underlying toxicological mechanism was explored by combining zebrafish test, cell assay and molecular docking simulation. Exposure of juvenile zebrafish to the chemicals during sex differentiation promoted feminization, with HFPO-TA acting at an environmental concentration of 1 µg/L. The chemicals inhibited proliferation of human prostate cells and transcriptional activity of human and zebrafish androgen receptors (AR), with HFPO-TA displaying the strongest potency. Molecular docking revealed that the chemicals bind to AR in a conformation similar to a known AR antagonist. Combined in vivo, in vitro and in silico results demonstrated that the chemicals disrupted sex differentiation likely by antagonizing AR-mediated pathways, and provided more evidence that HFPO-TA is not a safe alternative to PFOA.

ABSTRACT

Background: Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) among never-smokers is a public health burden especially prevalent in East Asian (EAS) women. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs), which quanefy geneec suscepebility, are promising for straefying risk, yet have mainly been developed in European (EUR) populaeons. We developed and validated single-and mule-ancestry PRSs for LUAD in EAS never-smokers, using the largest available genome-wide associaeon study (GWAS) dataset. Methods: We used GWAS summary staesecs from both EAS (8,002 cases; 20,782 controls) and EUR (2,058 cases; 5,575 controls) populaeons, as well as independent EAS individual level data. We evaluated several PRSs approaches: a single-ancestry PRS using 25 variants that reached genome-wide significance (PRS-25), a genome-wide Bayesian based approach (LDpred2), and a mule-ancestry approach that models geneec correlaeons across ancestries (CT-SLEB). PRS performance was evaluated based on the associaeon with LUAD and AUC values. We then esemated the lifeeme absolute risk of LUAD (age 30-80) and projected the AUC at different sample sizes using EAS-derived effect-size distribueon and heritability esemates. Findings: The CT-SLEB PRS showed a strong associaeon with LUAD risk (odds raeo=1.71, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.61, 1.82) with an AUC of 0.640 (95% CI: 0.629, 0.653). Individuals in the 95 th percenele of the PRS had an esemated 6.69% lifeeme absolute risk of LUAD. Comparison of LUAD risk between individuals in the highest and lowest 20% PRS quaneles revealed a 3.92-fold increase. Projeceon analyses indicated that achieving an AUC of 0.70, which approaches the maximized prediceon poteneal of the PRS given the esemated geneec variance, would require a future study encompassing 55,000 EAS LUAD cases with a 1:10 case-control raeo. Interpretations: Our study underscores the poteneal of mule-ancestry PRS approaches to enhance LUAD risk straeficaeon in never-smokers, parecularly in EAS populaeons, and highlights the necessary scale of future research to uncover the geneec underpinnings of LUAD.

ABSTRACT

Neonicotinoids pose significant environmental risks due to their widespread use, persistence, and challenges in elimination. This study explores the effectiveness of Fe/Mn biochar in enhancing the removal efficiency of neonicotinoids in recirculating constructed wetlands (RCWs). Results demonstrated that incorporating Fe/Mn biochar into RCWs significantly improved the removal of COD, NH4+-N, TN, TP, imidacloprid (IMI), and acetamiprid (ACE). However, the simultaneous presence of IMI and ACE in the RCWs hindered the elimination of NH4+-N, TN, and TP from wastewater. The enhanced removal of nutrients and pollutants by Fe/Mn biochar was attributed to its promotion of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling in RCWs, along with its facilitation of the adsorption and biodegradation of IMI and ACE. Metagenomics analysis demonstrated that Fe/Mn biochar altered the structure and diversity of microbial communities in RCWs. A total of 17 biodegradation genes (BDGs) and two pesticide degradation genes (PDGs) were identified within RCWs, with Fe/Mn biochar significantly increasing the abundance of BDGs such as cytochrome P450. The potential host genera for these BDGs/PDGs were identified as Betaproteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Nitrospiraceae, Gemmatimonadetes, and Bacillus. This study offers valuable insights into how Fe/Mn biochar enhances pesticide removal and its potential application in constructed wetland systems for treating pesticide-contaminated wastewater.

ABSTRACT

Teleost IgM+ B cells can phagocytose, like mammalian B1 cells, and secrete Ag-specific IgM, like mammalian B2 cells. Therefore, teleost IgM+ B cells may have the functions of both mammalian B1 and B2 cells. To support this view, we initially found that grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) IgM+ plasma cells (PCs) exhibit robust phagocytic ability, akin to IgM+ naive B cells. Subsequently, we sorted grass carp IgM+ PCs into two subpopulations: nonphagocytic (Pha-IgM+ PCs) and phagocytic IgM+ PCs (Pha+IgM+ PCs), both of which demonstrated the capacity to secrete natural IgM with LPS and peptidoglycan binding capacity. Remarkably, following immunization of grass carp with an Ag, we observed that both Pha-IgM+ PCs and Pha+IgM+ PCs could secrete Ag-specific IgM. Furthermore, in vitro concatenated phagocytosis experiments in which Pha-IgM+ PCs from an initial phagocytosis experiment were sorted and exposed again to beads confirmed that these cells also have phagocytic capabilities, thereby suggesting that all teleost IgM+ B cells have phagocytic potential. Additionally, we found that grass carp IgM+ PCs display classical phenotypic features of macrophages, providing support for the hypothesis that vertebrate B cells evolved from ancient phagocytes. These findings together reveal that teleost B cells are a primitive B cell type with functions reminiscent of both mammalian B1 and B2 cells, providing insights into the origin and evolution of B cells in vertebrates.

ABSTRACT

Electron-phonon coupling is an important energy transfer mechanism in solids after ultrafast laser excitation. In this study, we present an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and infrared (IR) pump-probe photoemission experiment to investigate the electron-phonon coupling in nonequilibrium gold. The energy of IR-laser-emitted photoelectrons is shifted due to the EUV photoemission and oscillates with a ∼4THz frequency. Such oscillation is considered as the effective excitation of the longitudinal acoustic phonon mode in gold through the spectral-dependent electron-phonon coupling. Our study showcases the capability of time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy to monitor the non-equilibrium lattice vibrations with ultrahigh spatial and temporal resolution.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Metabolomics may reveal novel biomarkers for coronary heart disease (CHD). We aimed to identify circulating metabolites and construct a metabolite risk score (MRS) associated with incident CHD among racially and geographically diverse populations. METHODS: Untargeted metabolomics was conducted using baseline plasma samples from 900 incident CHD cases and 900 age-/sex-/race-matched controls (300 pairs of Black Americans, White Americans, and Chinese adults, respectively), which detected 927 metabolites with known identities among ≥80% of samples. After quality control, 896 case-control pairs remained and were randomly divided into discovery (70%) and validation (30%) sets within each race. In the discovery set, conditional logistic regression and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator over 100 subsamples were applied to identify metabolites robustly associated with CHD risk and construct the MRS. The MRS-CHD association was evaluated using conditional logistic regression and the C-index. Mediation analysis was performed to examine if MRS mediated associations between conventional risk factors and incident CHD. The results from the validation set were presented as the main findings. RESULTS: Twenty-four metabolites selected in ≥90% of subsamples comprised the MRS, which was significantly associated with incident CHD (odds ratio per 1 SD, 2.21 [95% CI, 1.62-3.00] after adjusting for sociodemographics, lifestyles, family history, and metabolic health status). MRS could distinguish incident CHD cases from matched controls (C-index, 0.69 [95% CI, 0.63-0.74]) and improve CHD risk prediction when adding to conventional risk factors (C-index, 0.71 [95% CI, 0.65-0.76] versus 0.67 [95% CI, 0.61-0.73]; P<0.001). The odds ratios and C-index were similar across subgroups defined by race, sex, socioeconomic status, lifestyles, metabolic health, family history, and follow-up duration. The MRS mediated large portions (46.0%-74.2%) of the associations for body mass index, smoking, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia with incident CHD. CONCLUSIONS: In a diverse study sample, we identified 24 circulating metabolites that, when combined into an MRS, were robustly associated with incident CHD and modestly improved CHD risk prediction beyond conventional risk factors.

ABSTRACT

The pharmacological activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) is a convenient and promising strategy for promoting beige adipocyte biogenesis to combat obesity-related metabolic disorders. However, thiazolidinediones (TZDs), the full agonists of PPARγ exhibit severe side effects in animal models and in clinical settings. Therefore, the development of efficient and safe PPARγ modulators for the treatment of metabolic diseases is emerging. In this study, using comprehensive methods, we report a previously unidentified ligand-binding pocket (LBP) in PPARγ and link it to beige adipocyte differentiation. Further virtual screening of 4097 natural compounds based on this novel LBP revealed that saikosaponin A (NJT-2), a terpenoid compound, can bind to PPARγ to induce coactivator recruitment and effectively activate PPARγ-mediated transcription of the beige adipocyte program. In a mouse model, NJT-2 administration efficiently promoted beige adipocyte biogenesis and improved obesity-associated metabolic dysfunction, with significantly fewer adverse effects than those observed with TZD. Our results not only provide an advanced molecular insight into the structural ligand-binding details in PPARγ, but also develop a linked selective and safe agonist for obesity treatment.

ABSTRACT

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a rare but highly aggressive thyroid cancer with poor prognosis. Killing cancer cells by inducing DNA damage or blockage of DNA repair is a promising strategy for chemotherapy. It is reported that aldehyde-reactive alkoxyamines can capture the AP sites, one of the most common DNA lesions, and inhibit apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1(APE1)-mediated base excision repair (BER), leading to cell death. Whether this strategy can be employed for ATC treatment is rarely investigated. The aim of this study is to exploit GSH-responsive AP site capture reagent (AP probe-net), which responses to the elevated glutathione (GSH) levels in the tumor micro-environment (TME), releasing reactive alkoxyamine to trap AP sites and block the APE1-mediated BER for targeted anti-tumor activity against ATC. In vitro experiments, including MTT andγ-H2AX assays, demonstrate their selective cytotoxicity towards ATC cells over normal thyroid cells. Flow cytometry analysis suggests that AP probe-net arrests the cell cycle in the G2/M phase and induces apoptosis. Western blotting (WB) results show that the expression of apoptotic protein increased with the increased concentration of AP probe-net. Further in vivo experiments reveal that the AP probe-net has a good therapeutic effect on subcutaneous tumors of the ATC cells. In conclusion, taking advantage of the elevated GSH in TME, our study affords a new strategy for targeted chemotherapy of ATC with high selectivity and reduced adverse effects.

BACKGROUND: The bacterium Eikenella, classified as a gram-negative member of the phylum Proteobacteria, is distinguished by its rarity, corrosive nature, facultative anaerobic properties, and conditional pathogenicity. It represents the sole species within its genus-Eikenella corrodens (E. corrodens)-and can be found colonizing both human and animal oral and nasopharyngeal regions. Additionally, it occasionally inhabits the gastrointestinal or urogenital tracts. However, its slow growth rate can be attributed to its high nutritional requirements. However, there is an uneven distribution of construction and diagnostic capacity in China which poses undeniable challenges for the clinical examination and analysis of this case, especially in the basic hospitals. CASE SUMMARY: Here we presented a case of empyema associated with E. corrodens infection in a 67-year-old male patient without any previous history of infectious diseases in our primary hospital in Dongguan district of China. The patient was admitted due to recurrent worsening cough, sputum production, and dyspnea for 3 d, which had persisted for over 20 years. Moreover, the patient experienced a one-hour episode of unconsciousness. Upon admission, immediate comprehensive examinations were conducted on the patient which subsequently led to his admission to the intensive care unit. Meanwhile, the patient presented with drowsiness and profuse sweating along with bilateral conjunctival edema observed during initiation of non-invasive ventilation, suggesting empyema. A significant amount of coffee-colored malodorous pleural fluid was drained during the procedure above and sent to the laboratory department for inspection. Finally, laboratory culture results confirmed the presence of E. corrodens infection in the pleural fluid sample. The patient received antimicrobial therapy until died on day 22 in the hospital. CONCLUSION: In this report, we presented a case of empyema associated with E. corrodens infection. Multiple courses of morphological examination, viable culture analysis, and biochemical identification revealed its difficulties in detecting distinctive characteristics, as well as a detection model worth promoting. It's just that there were still certain deficiencies in terms of morphological assessment, biochemical identification, and drug susceptibility testing.

ABSTRACT

Electroreduction of nitrate/nitrite to high-value-added products, including NH2OH, is an important way to achieve sustainable production of green energy. However, this electrosynthesis of NH2OH still suffers from poor selectivity due to the various competing reactions. Here, we screen out Ni-N4 and Cu-N4 catalysts for highly efficient nitrite electroreduction to NH2OH by adopting density functional theory (DFT) calculations. DFT calculations reveal that the high selectivity of Ni-N4 and Cu-N4 is ascribed to their weak adsorption of *NH2OH and *NH intermediates, thereby preventing the further reduction of NH2OH. Moreover, using *NO as a model intermediate, we studied the relationship between the 3d orbital occupancy and adsorption strength of the intermediate. It is found that Ni-N4 and Cu-N4 with fully occupied dxz, dyz, and dz2 orbitals have poor adsorption of *NO intermediate. This work provides a new route for NH2OH synthesis and offers perspectives on the crucial factors in determining the catalytic selectivity.

ABSTRACT

A novel mangrove soil-derived actinomycete, strain S2-29T, was found to be most closely related to Saccharopolyspora karakumensis 5K548T based on 16 S rRNA sequence (99.24% similarity) and genomic phylogenetic analyses. However, significant divergence in digital DNA-DNA hybridization, average nucleotide identity, and unique biosynthetic gene cluster possession distinguished S2-29T as a distinct Saccharopolyspora species. Pan genome evaluation revealed exceptional genomic flexibility in genus Saccharopolyspora, with > 95% accessory genome content. Strain S2-29T harbored 718 unique genes, largely implicated in energetic metabolisms, indicating different metabolic capacities from its close relatives. Several uncharacterized biosynthetic gene clusters in strain S2-29T highlighted the strain's untapped capacity to produce novel functional compounds with potential biotechnological applications. Designation as novel species Saccharopolyspora mangrovi sp. nov. (type strain S2-29T = JCM 34,548T = CGMCC 4.7716T) was warranted, expanding the known Saccharopolyspora diversity and ecology. The discovery of this mangrove-adapted strain advances understanding of the genus while highlighting an untapped source of chemical diversity.

ABSTRACT

Depression is a common non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease. Previous studies demonstrated that hydroxysafflor yellow A had properties of improving motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. The effect of hydroxysafflor yellow A on depression in Parkinson's disease mice is investigated in this study. To induce Parkinson's disease model, male Swiss mice were exposed to rotenone (30 mg/kg) for 6 weeks. The chronic unpredictable mild stress was employed to induce depression from week 3 to week 6. Sucrose preference, tail suspension, and forced swimming tests were conducted. Golgi and Nissl staining of hippocampus were carried out. The levels of dopamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine and the expression of postsynaptic density protein 95, brain-derived neurotrophic factor in hippocampus were assayed. It showed that HSYA improved the depression-like behaviors of Parkinson's disease mice. Hydroxysafflor yellow A attenuated the injury of nerve and elevated contents of dopamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine in hippocampus. Treatment with hydroxysafflor yellow A also augmented the expression of postsynaptic density protein 95 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor. These findings suggest that hydroxysafflor yellow A ameliorates depression-like behavior in Parkinson's disease mice through regulating the contents of postsynaptic density protein 95 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor, therefore protecting neurons and neuronal dendrites of the hippocampus.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chicken coccidiosis is a protozoan disease that leads to considerable economic losses in the poultry industry. Live oocyst vaccination is currently the most effective measure for the prevention of coccidiosis. However, it provides limited protection with several drawbacks, such as poor immunological protection and potential reversion to virulence. Therefore, the development of effective and safe vaccines against chicken coccidiosis is still urgently needed. METHODS: In this study, a novel oral vaccine against Eimeria tenella was developed by constructing a recombinant Lactobacillus plantarum (NC8) strain expressing the E. tenella RON2 protein. We administered recombinant L. plantarum orally at 3, 4 and 5 days of age and again at 17, 18 and 19 days of age. Meanwhile, each chick in the commercial vaccine group was immunized with 3 × 102 live oocysts of coccidia. A total of 5 × 104 sporulated oocysts of E. tenella were inoculated in each chicken at 30 days. Then, the immunoprotection effect was evaluated after E. tenella infection. RESULTS: The results showed that the proportion of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, the proliferative ability of spleen lymphocytes, inflammatory cytokine levels and specific antibody titers of chicks immunized with recombinant L. plantarum were significantly increased (P < 0.05). The relative body weight gains were increased and the number of oocysts per gram (OPG) was decreased after E. tenella challenge. Moreover, the lesion scores and histopathological cecum sections showed that recombinant L. plantarum can significantly relieve pathological damage in the cecum. The ACI was 170.89 in the recombinant L. plantarum group, which was higher than the 150.14 in the commercial vaccine group. CONCLUSIONS: These above results indicate that L. plantarum expressing RON2 improved humoral and cellular immunity and enhanced immunoprotection against E. tenella. The protective efficacy was superior to that of vaccination with the commercial live oocyst vaccine. This study suggests that recombinant L. plantarum expressing the RON2 protein provides a promising strategy for vaccine development against coccidiosis.

ABSTRACT

Synchronous endometrial and ovarian endometrioid carcinoma, which simultaneously involves the endometrium and ovary, is a relatively rare entity among gynecological cancers. Precise diagnosis and risk stratification are crucial for disease management. We present a unique case of a 40-year-old woman diagnosed with synchronous endometrial and ovarian endometrioid carcinoma carrying a monoallelic pathogenic MUTYH germline variant. Despite the histological morphology of the right ovarian tumor exhibiting some differences compared to the uterine tumor, we identified three identical somatic mutations shared between the uterine tumor and right ovarian tumor, along with four additional mutations exclusive to the uterine tumor, through the utilization of massively parallel sequencing of a 196-gene panel. These findings enabled us to elucidate the clonal relatedness and potential clonal evolution of the tumor across the two anatomical sites. Furthermore, in accordance with the 2023 FIGO staging system, the patient was diagnosed with Stage IIIB2 uterine cancer, and consequently, adjuvant radiation and chemotherapy were administered after surgery. She is being followed periodically and is normal 15 months after surgery. To the best of our knowledge, this study presents the first case of a patient with synchronous endometrial and ovarian endometrioid carcinoma harboring a monoallelic pathogenic MUTYH germline variant.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between meteorological data three days before admission and the status of sputum pathogens culture in hospitalized patients with Acute exacerbation of Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) and respiratory infections. METHODS: Data from 1,370 AECOPD patients (80.66% males, approximately 80% age > 70) with respiratory infections hospitalized in Fujian Provincial Hospital between December 2013 and December 2019 were collected. This cohort comprised, along with concurrent meteorological data from Fuzhou. Group differences were analyzed to compare the meteorological data three days prior to admission between patients with positive sputum pathogen cultures and those without. Logistic regression models were employed to investigate the association between meteorological parameters and the status of sputum pathogen cultures in patients with AECOPD and respiratory infections. Sensitivity analyses was conducted among the hospitalized patients from 2013 to 2016 and 2017-2019. Stratified analysis was performed to explore the factors affecting the effect of temperature differences and their interactions. RESULTS: 578(42.19%) cases had a positive sputum culture report indicating pathogen growth. 323 cases were found with Gram-negative bacteria, 160 with Gram-positive bacteria, and 114 with fungi. Uni-variate analysis revealed statistical differences in DTD three days prior to admission (DTD-3d) between the positive and negative sputum culture groups (p = 0.019). Multivariate analysis indicated that an increase in the risk of positive sputum pathogen cultures was associated with greater DTD three days before admission (DTD-3d), with OR1.657 (95%CI [ 1.328-1.981]). The risk of positive sputum pathogen cultures was higher in groups with greater DTD-3d. The findings were consistent across different admission periods. Stratified analysis showed that patients without respiratory failure were more affected by DTD-3d, and an interaction effect was observed (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: In coastal areas, the diurnal temperature difference three days prior to admission affects the sputum pathogen status in AECOPD patients with respiratory infections.

ABSTRACT

Biochar is a porous carbon material generated by the thermal treatment of biomass under anaerobic or anoxic conditions with wealthy Oxygen-containing functional groups (OCFGs). To date, OCFGs of biochar have been extensively studied for their significant utility in pollutant removal, catalysis, capacitive applications, etc. This review adopted a whole system philosophy and systematically summarizes up-to-date knowledge of formation, detection methods, engineering, and application for OCFGs. The formation mechanisms and detection methods of OCFGs, as well as the relationships between OCFGs and pyrolysis conditions (such as feedstocks, temperature, atmosphere, and heating rate), were discussed in detail. The review also summarized strategies and mechanisms for the oxidation of biochar to afford OCFGs, with the performances and mechanisms of OCFGs in the various application fields (environmental remediation, catalytic biorefinery, and electrode material) being highlighted. In the end, the future research direction of biochar OCFGs was put forward.
