ABSTRACT
Experiments realizing the processes of the continuous cultivation of S. typhi have confirmed the suitability of using the graphic method for the prognosing of these processes (Luedeking and Piret, 1959) on the basis of the data on their batch cultivation. The method ensures good conformity with the experimental data. It allows one to determine not only microbial concentration by giving the values of the dilution rate, but also the required dilation rate by giving the values of microbial concentration.

The authors studied the antigenic activity of Bordetella pertussis during stab cultivation. For the first time there were revealed changes (oscillations) of antigenic activity: formation of 3 peaks of which the middle was the highest. A possibility of improving the quality of pertussis vaccine by using biomass at the height of the peak was experimentally founded.

The authors analyzed the efficacy of actual and prognosticated processes of Cl. perfringens, type A, cultivation: periodic, semicontinuous, continuous, and combined monocyclic. Comparative study permitted to choose the economically optimal processes, without any expenditure for their realization. Monocyclic combined process which could provide a great amount of active toxin at short periods proved to be the most advantageous among the cultivation processes studied.

The authors present a classification of the process of cultivation of the microorganisms, which are divided into periodic, quasi-continuous (semi-continuous and multicyclic) and continuous. The advantages of the quasi-continuous processes in comparison with the periodic ones (obtaining the required amount of biomasses at shorter periods) and the continuous ones (no special expensive apparatus is required) are demonstrated. The question on the expediency of organizing the structural subdivision for the cultivation of different microorganism species at the bacterial preparation plants is raised.

The authors suggest the method of study of the process of periodic cultivation of microorganisms for prognostication of the optimal process of biomass accumulation at the level of microbial population, homogenous by the spectrum of biochemical properties. A regimen of continuous growth of the microorganisms (calculated with the use of this method), corresponding to the phase of delay of the growth rate, was economically more effective in comparison with the traditional process used in the vaccine production.
