ABSTRACT

Abstract During the present study thirteen Megaderma lyra bats were observed roosting in dark, domed shaped room of Rohtas Fort, district Jhelum. Out of these, six specimens were captured from the roosting site, using hand net. All captured specimens were male. These bats were identified through their unique facial features, an erect and elongated nose-leaf, large oval ears that joined above the forehead and no tail. Mean head and body length of captured specimens was 80 mm, forearm length was 67 mm while average lengths of 3rd, 4th and 5th metacarpals were 51.73 mm, 55.17 mm and 60.42 mm, respectively. Mean skull length was 29.84 mm, breadth of braincase was 12.77 mm. Average Penis length of two specimens was 6.6 mm and total bacular length was 3.08 mm respectively. This is the first record of Megaderma lyra from district Jhelum.

ABSTRACT

Labeo rohita, Gibelion catla, Cirrhinus mrigala, Ctenopharyngodon idella and Hypophthalmichthys molitrix were grown together for 365 days in triplicate ponds. Six iso-caloric feeds having varying protein levels i.e. 22, 24, 26, 28, 30 and 32% were prepared and supplemented to fish at 2% fish weight daily. Significantly, higher final average weight (793 ± 197 g) and total length gain (398 ± 40 mm) was recorded for Ctenopharyndodon idella. Net fish yield enhanced as the level of digestible protein (DP) in the supplementary diets increased and plateaued at 28% DP level, thereafter significant reduction (P<0.05) in fish weight increments was experienced at any surplus protein level. Among the supplementary feeds, 28% DP level resulted in maximum net fish yield (4304 ± 33 kg ha-1 year-1) and a significantly higher overall nitrogen conversion ratio (NCR) of 1:5.2 ± 0.14. Higher level of DP in supplementary feeds resulted in reduced fish growth.

ABSTRACT

To analyse the patient demographics, tumour characteristics and follow-up data of patients with recurrence of melanoma following a negative sentinel lymph node biopsy. A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained melanoma database was conducted. Melanoma patients who had a negative sentinel lymph node were identified and we performed statistical analysis on their respective demographics, tumour histology characteristics and follow-up data. Of 164 patients studied, 40 (24%) had a recurrence of melanoma at a median of 39.5 months following diagnosis (range 1-92 months). Distant metastases were the most common form of disease recurrence (40% of all recurrences). Increasing tumour thickness was an independent predictor of recurrence on multivariate analysis while nodular histology approached significance. Median survival of 6 months was seen following disease recurrence (range 1-126 months). In the setting of a negative sentinel lymph node biopsy, there remains a risk of melanoma recurrence. Distant metastases were the most common form of recurrence. Disease recurrence occurred more frequently in those with thick primary tumours. Recurrences occurred at long intervals from diagnosis indicating the need to consider prolonged patient follow-up.

ABSTRACT

We present an exceedingly rare case of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) arising in a minor salivary gland of the upper lip. We could not identify any reports of CXPA occurring in the upper lip in the literature. This case highlights the need for early surgical review and management of oral lesions of uncertain and/or unpredictable nature.

ABSTRACT

In order to make the best choice between renewable energy technologies, it is important to be able to compare these technologies on the basis of their sustainability, which may include a variety of social, environmental, and economic indicators. This study examined the comparative sustainability of four renewable electricity technologies in terms of their life cycle CO2 emissions and embodied energy, from construction to decommissioning and including maintenance (periodic component replacement plus machinery use), using life cycle analysis. The models developed were based on case studies of power plants in New Zealand, comprising geothermal, large-scale hydroelectric, tidal (a proposed scheme), and wind-farm electricity generation. The comparative results showed that tidal power generation was associated with 1.8 g of CO2/kWh, wind with 3.0 g of CO2/kWh, hydroelectric with 4.6 g of CO2/kWh, and geothermal with 5.6 g of CO2/kWh (not including fugitive emissions), and that tidal power generation was associated with 42.3 kJ/kWh, wind with 70.2 kJ/kWh, hydroelectric with 55.0 kJ/kWh, and geothermal with 94.6 kJ/kWh. Other environmental indicators, as well as social and economic indicators, should be applied to gain a complete picture of the technologies studied.
