ABSTRACT

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is the most severe global public health emergency in over a hundred years. We have collected and organized prevention and control information from China and other counties and used it as an important reference for designing routine epidemic prevention and control measures and treatment process reengineering of outpatient dental services. Suggestions are made in the following aspects: standard precaution is adopted for all patients based on situational risk assessment conducted by the medical staffs; transmission-based precautions are adopted in addition while caring for patients who are suspected of or have been confirmed of having infectious diseases, in which scenario, standard precautions may not be enough; regarding clinical services, the triage process should be further improved, clinical service delivery areas should be redesigned to maximize safe distances, minimally invasive dentistry procedures should be prioritized for treatment, and postponement of treatment should be recommended appropriately; infection prevention and control guidelines should be regularly updated and relevant trainings provided to the medical staffs accordingly; COVID-19 incidents associated with delivery of dental care should be documented and evaluated; it is also important to communicate with Chinese and international colleagues and stress research and professional training.

ABSTRACT

Objective @#To investigate the effectiveness of fluoride varnish in preventing first permanent molars caries inschool-age children and provide necessary information for oral health instruction. @*Methods@#378 children aged 6-7 years old in the first grade of primary school in dahua country, hechi city, Guangxi province (1 053 first permanent molars) were randomly recruited into 2 groups. The test group (542 first permanent molars in 191 children) was treated with fluoride varnish one time in a half year and given oral hygiene instruction 3 times; The control group (511 first permanent molars in 187 children) was only given oral hygiene instruction 3 times. All first permanent molars were checked after 18 months later for caries. @*Results@#After intervention, the caries prevalence rate in the test group raised from 21.99% to 27.75% compared with the control group from 24.60% to 37.43%. The caries incidence rate in test and control group was 5.76% and 12.83% respectively. There was a significant difference between 2 groups regardless of caries prevalence, caries incidence, the DMFT reduction, the DMFs reduction, the occlusal caries prevalence, the pit and fissure caries prevalence, the proximal caries prevalence. @*Conclusion @#Semi-annual application of fluoride varnish is effective in the prevention of dental caries in first permanent molars , which was worth of being popularized in clinic.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To observe the trends of dental caries and identify risk factors which may be associated with caries among children in Guangxi province between 2011 and 2013. METHODS: Three age groups of children (3-year-old, 6-year-old, 12-year-old) were selected from 3 urban and rural areas in Guilin, Baise and Beihai of Guangxi province and examined annually from 2011 to 2013.The caries prevalence, mean DMFT/dmft, caries incidence rate and filling rate were recorded. The data was analyzed with SPSS19.0 software package. RESULTS: The caries prevalence, mean DMFT/dmft and caries incidence rate in the 3 groups were increased year by year. The caries prevalence of deciduous teeth in 3-year-old group was 53.2%, 68.7% and 79.1% respectively, and the growth rate was 48.6%; The mean dmft was 2.34, 4.06 and 5.68, and the caries incidence rate increased from 55.9% to 61.2%. In the 6-year-old group, the caries prevalence of permanent teeth was 8.6%, 21.6% and 48.0% respectively, and the growth rate was 458.1%; The mean DMFT was 0.13, 0.34 and 0.99, and the caries incidence rate increased from 15.6% to 36.6%. The caries prevalence of permanent teeth in 12-year-old group was 52.8%, 60.2% and 71.3%, and the growth rate was 35.0%; The mean DMFT was 1.49, 1.92 and 2.96, and the caries incidence rate increased from 26.1% to 46.9%. The frequency of drinking soft drink or sweet, taking sweets at bedtime or after brushing teeth, brushing teeth with help, frequency of brushing, fluoride toothpaste may be the risk factors related to dental caries among children in this study. CONCLUSIONS: Dental caries increase fast among children in Guangxi area. It is necessary to take appropriate measures to improve children's oral health.
