ABSTRACT

Surface atom diffusion is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nanostructured metals with ultrahigh surface-to-volume ratios. However, the fundamental atomic mechanism of surface atom diffusion remains elusive. Here, we report in situ atomic-scale observations of surface pressure-driven atom diffusion in gold nanocrystals at room temperature using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with a high-speed detection camera. The topmost layer of atoms on (001) plane initially diffuse in a column-by-column manner. As diffusion proceeds, the remaining atomic columns collectively inject into adjacent underlayer, accompanied by nucleation of a surface dislocation. In comparison, atoms on (111) plane directly diffuse to the base without collective injection. Quantitative calculations indicate that these crystal plane orientation-dependent atom diffusion behaviors contribute to the larger diffusion coefficient of (111) plane compared to (001) plane in addition to the effect of diffusion activation energy. Our findings provide valuable insights into atomic mechanisms of diffusion-dominant morphology evolution of nanostructured metals and guide the design of nanostructured materials with enhanced structural stability.

ABSTRACT

Background: The basic medical education stage is not enough to support physicians to fully diagnose and evaluate polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The study aims to discover the difference in treatment choice between participants with different annual consultation number of PCOS, to promote lifelong learning, and drive balanced development within healthcare. Methods: This is a multicenter cross-sectional survey. Participants' basic information, knowledge of PCOS and treatment options were collected online. According to the annual consultation number of patients with PCOS, physicians were divided into three groups: 0-50 people/yr, 50-200 people/yr, and >200 people/yr, and the results were derived from χ2 test, Fisher exact test, and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: The study analyzed 1689 questionnaires, and 1206 physicians (71.4%) received less than 50 women per year, 388 physicians (30.0%) with an annual number of 50-200 women, and 95 physicians (5.6%) with patient turnover for more than 200 people. Reproductive endocrinologists generally have higher access to the clinic. As the number of visits increases, more and more physicians would perceive patients as more likely to have abnormal blood glucose and heavy weight. Physicians with large numbers of consultations are more likely to use Asian or Chinese standards to assess obesity. The multivariate analysis involved variables such as age, hospital level, specialty, and patient turnover annually, and more young doctors actively assessed lipid profile (odds ratio (OR) 1.56, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.16, 2.16)), and primary hospitals (OR 0.65 CI (0.44, 0.89)) chose OGTT for blood glucose assessment less than tertiary hospitals. Physicians in secondary hospitals are more aggressive in evaluating androgens. Conclusion: Our survey found differences in endocrine assessment, metabolic screening, and treatment in PCOS women in terms of the number of obstetrician-gynecologists who received different patient consultation numbers. The importance of continuing education for physicians is emphasized, to promote lifelong learning.

ABSTRACT

Carbon support is essential for electrocatalysis, but limitations remain, as carbon corrosion can lead to electrocatalyst degradation and affect the long-term durability of electrocatalysts. Here, we studied the corrosion dynamics of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Vulcan carbon (VC) together with platinum (Pt) nanoparticles in real time by liquid cell (LC) transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that CNTs with a high degree of graphitization exhibited higher corrosion resistance compared to VC. Furthermore, we observed that the main degradation path of Pt nanoparticles in Pt/CNTs was ripening, while in Pt/VC, it was aggregation and coalescence, which was dominated by the interactions between Pt nanoparticles and different hybridization of carbon supports. Finally, we performed an ex situ CV stability test to confirm the conclusions obtained from in situ experiments. This work provides deep insights into the corrosion mechanism of carbon-supported electrocatalysts to optimize the design of electrocatalysts with a higher durability.

ABSTRACT

This paper aimed to evaluate the effect of 3 kinds of TCM polysaccharides instead of antibiotics in preventing salpingitis in laying hens. After feeding the laying hens with Lotus leaf polysaccharide, Poria polysaccharide, and Epimedium polysaccharide, mixed bacteria (E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus) were used to infect the oviduct to establish an inflammation model. Changes in antioxidant, serum immunity, anti-inflammatory, gut microbiota, and serum metabolites were evaluated. The results showed that the 3 TCM polysaccharides could increase the expression of antioxidant markers SOD, GSH, and CAT, and reduce the accumulation of MDA in the liver; the contents of IgA and IgM in serum were increased. Decreased the mRNA expression of TLR4, NFκB, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL1ß, IL6, and IL8, and increased the mRNA expression of anti-inflammatory factor IL5 in oviduct tissue. 16sRNA high-throughput sequencing revealed that the 3 TCM polysaccharides improved the intestinal flora disturbance caused by bacterial infection, increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Bacteroides and Actinobacillus, and decreased the abundance of harmful bacteria such as Romboutsia, Turicibacter, and Streptococcus. Metabolomics showed that the 3 TCM polysaccharides could increase the content of metabolites such as 3-hydroxybutyric acid and isobutyl-L-carnitine, and these results could alleviate the further development of salpingitis. In conclusion, the present study has found that using TCM polysaccharides instead of antibiotics was a feasible way to prevent bacterial salpingitis in laying hens, which might make preventing this disease no longer an issue for breeding laying hens.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Zhenqi Buxue Oral Liquid (ZQ), progesterone capsules, and their combination in treating oligomenorrhea and hypomenorrhea with qi-blood and Kidney (Shen) essence deficiency. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, multi-center controlled trial between June 2022 to December 2022. Ninety-six oligomenorrhea and hypomenorrhea patients with qi-blood and Shen essence deficiency were randomly assigned to receive ZQ (ZQ group, 29 cases), progesterone capsules (PG group, 32 cases), or the combined Chinese and Western medicine (COM group, 31 cases) at a ratio of 1:1:1. Patients in the ZQ or PG group took daily 10 mL twice a day of ZQ or 200 mg once a day of progesterone capsules for 10 consecutive days on day 15 of the menstrual cycle respectively, and patients in the COM group received the same ZQ combined with progesterone capsules. The treatment course lasted for 3 months and follow-up was performed at 1 and 3 months after the end of treatment. Primary endpoint was the menstrual Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Scale (TCMSS) scores. Secondary endpoints included pictorial blood loss assessment chart (PBAC) scores, clinical efficacy rate, 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) scores, sex hormones and thickness of endometrium. Adverse events (AEs) were recorded. RESULTS: TCMSS scores after 1- and 3-month treatment in all groups were significantly lower than those at baseline (P<0.05). Only TCMSS scores after 3-month treatment in the ZQ and COM groups continuously decreased compared with those after 1-month treatment in the same group (P<0.01). TCMSS scores after 3-month treatment in the ZQ and COM groups were significantly lower than those in the PG group (P<0.05, P<0.01). Compared with baseline, PBAC scores in the ZQ and COM groups after 3 months of treatment were also significantly higher (both P<0.01). The total effective rates of TCM syndrome of 3-month treatment were significantly improved in all groups compared with that after 1 month of treatment (P<0.05). The total effective rate of the COM group was the highest in the 3rd month of treatment and significantly higher than that of PG group alone (P<0.05). Compared with baseline, only the SF-36 scores of COM group were significantly improved after 3 months of treatment (P<0.05). No serious adverse reactions were observed after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of ZQ and PG, or ZQ only had better effects on reducing TCMSS scores compared with PG, and COM showed the higher total effective rate compared with monotherapy. Besides, COM could effectively improve menstrual blood loss and quality of life. ZQ combined with PG may be an effective and safe option for oligomenorrhea and hypomenorrhea patients with qi-blood and Shen essence deficiency.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The profile of naturally occurring antibodies to amyloid-ß (NAbs-Aß) is altered in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the diagnostic potential of NAbs-Aß for AD is not clear yet. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the diagnostic capacities of NAbs-Aß for AD. METHODS: A total of 40 AD patients and 40 cognitively normal (CN) controls were enrolled in this study. Levels of NAbs-Aß were detected by ELISA. The correlations of NAbs-Aß levels with cognitive function and AD-associated biomarkers were examined by Spearman correlation analysis. Diagnostic abilities of NAbs-Aß were evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses. The integrative diagnostic models were established by logistic regression models. RESULTS: We found that NAbs-Aß7-18 had the highest diagnostic capability (AUC = 0.72) among all single NAbs-Aß. The combined model (NAbs-Aß7-18, NAbs-Aß19-30, and NAbs-Aß25-36) had a noticeable improvement (AUC = 0.84) in the diagnostic capacity compared with each single NAbs-Aß. CONCLUSION: NAbs-Aßs are promising in the diagnosis of AD. Further investigations are needed to confirm the translational potential of this diagnostic strategy.

ABSTRACT

Sentiment analysis (SA) is an important task in natural language processing in which convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully applied. However, most existing CNNs can only extract predefined, fixed-scale sentiment features and cannot synthesize flexible, multi-scale sentiment features. Moreover, these models' convolutional and pooling layers gradually lose local detailed information. In this study, a new CNN model based on residual network technology and attention mechanisms is proposed. This model exploits more abundant multi-scale sentiment features and addresses the loss of locally detailed information to enhance the accuracy of sentiment classification. It is primarily composed of a position-wise gated Res2Net (PG-Res2Net) module and a selective fusing module. The PG-Res2Net module can adaptively learn multi-scale sentiment features over a large range using multi-way convolution, residual-like connections, and position-wise gates. The selective fusing module is developed to fully reuse and selectively fuse these features for prediction. The proposed model was evaluated using five baseline datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model surpassed the other models in performance. In the best case, the model outperforms the other models by up to 1.2%. Ablation studies and visualizations further revealed the model's ability to extract and fuse multi-scale sentiment features.

ABSTRACT

Second phases play a significant role in the development of high-performance magnesium alloys with rare earth elements. Here, in situ tensile tests combined with synchrotron radiation were carried out to investigate the deformation behavior of ß phases in a WE (Mg-Y-Gd-Nd) alloy. By lattice strain analysis, it was found that micro load continuously transferred from the soft α-Mg matrix to the hard ß phases during the whole plastic deformation, while this behavior was much more obvious at the beginning of deformation. Based on diffraction peak broadening, Williamson-Hall (W-H) plotting was used to study the microstrain of ß phases. The results showed that the microstrain of ß phases increased rapidly within 4% plastic strain and reached the maximum at plastic strain of ~6.5%. Since the ß phases acted as hard phases, the microstrain was considered as a sign of the stress concentration near phase interfaces. It was also suggested that the effective release of local stress concentration at the ß/α-Mg interface benefited the ductility of the WE alloy by the plastic deformation of ß phases and phase interface sliding.

ABSTRACT

Background: This study aimed to compare the differences between reproductive endocrinologists (Repro-Endo) and obstetricians-gynecologists (Ob-Gyn; non-reproductive medicine specialty) in diagnosing, evaluating, and treating PCOS women with insulin resistance (IR).Methods: Repro-Endo and Ob-Gyn in China participated in this survey, and their responses were analyzed using χ2 tests, Fisher exact tests, and multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: The study analyzed 2412 survey responses (92.3% OB-Gyn; 98.5% women). Physician's age, hospital grade, specialty, and the number of PCOS patients who visit the physicians, revealed that Repro-Endo participants were more likely to suggest an oral glucose tolerance test (OR, 1.727; 95% CI, 1.272-2.345) as their first choice than Ob-Gyn participants. The most common treatments for patients with PCOS were lifestyle modification (>95%) and metformin use (>80%). More Repro-Endo participants prescribed metformin at a dose of 1.5 g/day compared with OB-Gyn (46.5% vs. 23.5%), and more OB-Gyn participants reported being unclear about the appropriate dosage of metformin for patients with obesity and PCOS (12.5% vs. 1.6%).Conclusion: This survey identified knowledge gaps in metabolic screening for patients with IR and PCOS. Similarly, it highlights the need to improve IR management education for physicians caring for PCOS women.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To present the clinicopathologic findings of the second case of androgen-secreting adult granulosa cell tumor (AGCT) in a woman with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and discuss in the light of the literature. Methods: Description of a case and discussion of the literature. Results: A patient with oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea and hirsutism who was diagnosed as PCOS and treated by oral contraceptive for three years, then left ovarian solid and liquid mass was found and pathologically confirmed to be androgen-secreting AGCT after left oophorectomy. She got regular menstrual cycle and gave birth naturally, but clinical features of PCOS reappeared after breastfeeding. Conclusion: Androgen-secreting AGCT and PCOS have similar clinical features of hyperandrogenism, it is difficult to diagnose androgen-secreting AGCT when both diseases occur in the same patient. If the size of cystic mass in androgen-secreting AGCT is too small to differentiate from PCOM on imaging, pathological examination after surgery may be the only way to find the disease.

ABSTRACT

Cracking from a fine equiaxed zone (FQZ), often just tens of microns across, plagues the welding of 7000 series aluminum alloys. Using a multiscale correlative methodology, from the millimeter scale to the nanoscale, we shed light on the strengthening mechanisms and the resulting intergranular failure at the FQZ. We show that intergranular AlCuMg phases give rise to cracking by micro-void nucleation and subsequent link-up due to the plastic incompatibility between the hard phases and soft (low precipitate density) grain interiors in the FQZ. To mitigate this, we propose a hybrid welding strategy exploiting laser beam oscillation and a pulsed magnetic field. This achieves a wavy and interrupted FQZ along with a higher precipitate density, thereby considerably increasing tensile strength over conventionally hybrid welded butt joints, and even friction stir welds.

ABSTRACT

Magnesium alloys with high strength and excellent corrosion resistance are always sought-after in light-weighting structural components for automotive and aerospace applications. However, for most magnesium alloys that have a high specific strength, they usually have an inferior corrosion resistance and vice versa. In this work, we successfully develop a Mg-11Y-1Al (wt. %) alloy through conventional casting, solution treatment followed by extrusion. The overall properties of this alloy feature with a corrosion rate lower than 0.2 mm y-1, high yield strength of 350 MPa and moderate tensile elongation of 8%, the combination of which shows competitive advantage over other comparative magnesium alloys in the literature. It is found that a thin and dense protective film of Y2O3/Y(OH)3 can be fast developed with the aid of Al2O3/Al(OH)3 deposition to isolate this alloy from further attack of corrosion medium. Meanwhile, the refined grains, weak texture and activation of non-basal slip systems co-contribute to the high strength and good ductility. Our findings are expected to inspire the design of next-generation high performance magnesium alloys.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the needs of obstetricians and gynecologists with different working years for the contents and forms of CME. Methods: The online questionnaire was distributed on the largest academic training platform for obstetrics and gynecology in China from April 2020 to May 2020. The survey contents mainly included the training forms and training contents of CME, as well as the mastery of diseases by doctors with different working years. Results: 4458 questionnaires were returned, of which 3954 questionnaires were included in the study. There was a significant (p < 0.001) positive correlation between the mastery of 19 diseases by obstetricians and gynecologists with different working years. After adjusting for specialist departments, hospital grades, nature of units and ages, it was found that there was no statistically significant difference between the groups in gynecological endocrine-related diseases, such as precocious puberty/delayed puberty, and there was also no statistically significant difference between the groups of shorter working years in infertility, menopausal syndrome, hyperprolactinemia and premature ovarian failure. Conclusion: The most popular training content for obstetricians and gynecologists with different working years is common gynecological endocrine diseases, of which abnormal uterine bleeding, menopausal syndrome, polycystic ovarian syndrome and cervical lesions are the most selected diseases, and the most popular form of training is online.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Imbalance between the production and clearance of amyloid-ß (Aß) promotes the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Presenilin-1 (PS1) is the catalytic subunit of γ-secretase, which is involved in the process of Aß production. The profiles of autoantibodies are dysregulated in AD patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the relative levels and clinical relevance of naturally occurring antibodies to PS1 (NAbs-PS1) in AD. METHODS: A total of 55 subjects with AD (including both dementia and mild cognitive impairment due to AD), 28 subjects with cognitive impairment (including both dementia and mild cognitive impairment) not due to AD (non-AD CI), and 70 cognitively normal (CN) subjects were recruited. One-site ELISA was utilized to determine the relative levels of NAbs-PS1 in plasma. RESULTS: AD subjects had lower plasma levels of NAbs-PS1 than CN and non-AD CI subjects. Plasma NAbs-PS1 were negatively associated with the brain Aß load, as reflected by PET-PiB SUVR, and were positively associated with cognitive functions of participants. Plasma NAbs-PS1 discriminated AD patients from CN with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.730, a sensitivity of 69.09%, and a specificity of 67.14%, and they discriminated AD patients from non-AD CI subjects with an AUC of 0.750, a specificity of 70.91%, and a sensitivity of 71.43%. CONCLUSION: This study found an aberrant immunological phenotype in AD patients. Further investigations are needed to determine the pathophysiological functions of NAbs-PS1 in AD.

ABSTRACT

Ferroptosis is a novel programmed cell death form characterized by iron-mediated reactive oxygen species-induced lipid peroxidation and subsequent cell damage that is distinct from apoptosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis, and autophagy. Most studies on ferroptosis are based on its function and mechanism, but there have been relatively few studies on the effects of drugs, especially anaesthetics, on ferroptosis. Therefore, we summarized the recent literature on the effects of anaesthetics on ferroptosis to understand the underlying mechanism. In particular, we focused on the targets of various anaesthetics in different mechanisms of ferroptosis and the effects of ferroptosis induction or inhibition by narcotics on various diseases. The aims of this review are to provide a relatively reasonable drug regimen for clinicians, to explore potential ferroptosis protection drugs and targets, to reduce perioperative complications and to improve the postoperative performance of patients, especially those who are critically ill.

ABSTRACT

Background: PCOS is a prevalent endocrine and metabolic disorder in women characterized by abnormal blood glucose, dyslipidemia, and abnormal mental health. To improve patient care, the goal of our study is to find out if there are differences in how PCOS patients are treated at different hospital levels within the hierarchical medical system. Methods: Obstetricians and gynecologists from primary, secondary, and tertiary hospitals were the participants in the survey. The responses provided and collected were analyzed using various statistical techniques like the chi-square test, Fisher exact test, and logistic regression with multiple variables. Results: The investigation examined 2298 survey replies (13.1% primary hospitals, 52.4% secondary hospitals, and 34.5% tertiary hospitals). As hospital grade increases, more participants inquire about a patient's history of unfavorable pregnancies concerning hormone evaluation; the better the hospital's grade, the greater the number of participants who would undergo AMH and androgen-related tests. The higher the hospital level, the more participants would pick the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) to determine insulin resistance, the BMI Asian criteria for defining obesity, and blood lipids. Participants in primary (odds ratio (OR) = 0.383, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.282-0.520) and secondary (OR = 0.607, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.481-0.765) hospitals were significantly less likely to select OGTT than those in tertiary hospitals. Comparatively, fewer primary hospitals chose to do lipid profiling than tertiary hospitals (OR 0.689, 95% CI 0.523-0.909). With the increase in hospital level, participants were more knowledgeable about the multiple efficacies and dose alternatives of metformin and selected letrozole and assisted reproduction more frequently. Conclusion: Our study uncovered differences in the endocrine evaluation, metabolic screening, and management of PCOS patients across obstetrics and gynecology at various hospital levels. Simultaneously, it underlines the need to improve the hierarchical medical system and close the knowledge gap across hospitals.

ABSTRACT

Sex-biased dispersal is common in group-living animals. Due to differences in local demographic and environmental factors, sex-biased dispersal presents many irregular patterns. In this study, a habituated, individually identified Yunnan snub-nosed monkey Rhinopithecus bieti group was observed over 9 years; 192 dispersal events, including 97 male dispersal events (25 natal dispersal and 72 secondary dispersal) and 95 female dispersal events (34 natal dispersal and 61 secondary dispersal) were observed. Males and females showed different dispersal paths, dispersal ages, and dispersal patterns. Females had 2 dispersal paths, whereas males had 4 paths. In terms of age of dispersal, the male age of natal dispersal was younger than for females. Males prefer single dispersal, whereas females prefer parallel dispersal. Our study indicates that the dispersal pattern of R. bieti should be classified as a bisexual dispersal pattern. The differences in dispersal path, average age at dispersal, and dispersal path pattern indicate that Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys may still retain a loose matrilineal social system.
