ABSTRACT

Seafloor hydrothermal chimneys are significant metal resources and have fundamental effects on marine chemistry balance. Previous studies on growth of the chimneys focused on mineral composition and elemental distribution in chimney walls, but the isotopic composition of different elements and their correlations remain poorly understood. Here, we report lateral Fe and S isotopes from sulfides across a chimney wall in detail from the Deyin-1 hydrothermal field (DHF) on the South Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Pyrite was characterized by increases in both δ34S and δ56Fe from the exterior to the interior within the chimney wall, which is likely related to enhanced S and Fe isotope fractionation between pyrite and fluids derived from the temperature gradient. Furthermore, δ56Fe displayed a well-defined, linear, positive correlation with δ34S in pyrite from the DHF as well as in pyrite from other areas. A model of hydrothermal pyrite formation suggests that, under conditions with uniform hydrothermal fluid, different temperatures and similar pyrite-fluid exchange degrees could result in the observed linear relationships between δ34S and δ56Fe. The regular and coupled Fe-S isotope variations within the chimney wall efficiently constrain the process of hydrothermal sulfide formation.

ABSTRACT

China is a massive mercury emitter, responsible for a quarter of the world's mercury emissions, which transit the atmosphere and accumulate throughout its watercourses. The Changjiang (Yangtze) River is the third largest river in the world, integrating mercury emissions over its 1.8 × 106 km2 catchment and channelling them to the East China Sea where they can be buried. Despite its potential global significance, the importance of the East China Sea as a terminal mercury sink remains poorly known. To address this knowledge gap, total mercury and methylmercury concentrations were determined from 51 surface sediment samples revealing their spatial distribution, whilst demonstrating the overall pollution status of the East China Sea. Sedimentary mercury distributions beneath the East China Sea are spatially heterogeneous, with high mercury concentrations (> 25 ng g-1) corresponding to areas of fine-grained sediment accumulation. In contrast, some sites of fine-grained sediment deposition have significantly lower values of methylmercury (< 15 ng g-1), such as the Changjiang estuary and some isolated offshore areas. Fine-grained particles and organic matter availability appear to exert the dominant control over sedimentary mercury distribution in the East China Sea, whereas in situ methylation serves as an additional control governing methylmercury accumulation. Estimated annual sedimentary fluxes of mercury in the East China Sea are 51 × 106 g, which accounts for 9% of China's annual mercury emissions.

ABSTRACT

A ratiometric optical sensor has been developed with electrospinning processing method for dissolved oxygen measurement. The sensing film is fabricated by using silver nano-particles (Ag NPs) doped with tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) ruthenium(II) dichloride complex (Ru(DPP)3Cl2) encapsulated in plasticized polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). An insensitive 3-(2-benzothiazolyl)-7-(diethy lamino)-(6CI,7CI) (Coumarin6) is adopted as reference. The ratio of oxygenation is calculated at each image pixel of a 3CCD camera to quantify the oxygen concentration in aqueous environment. Compared to Ag-free film, the response time of Ag-containing films were improved from 1.5 s to 1.0 s upon switching from deoxygenated to air saturation and from 65 s to 45 s from air saturation to fully deoxygenated. The response times of the Ag-free film obtained by knifing was 2.0 s upon switching from deoxygenated to air saturation and 104 s from air saturation to fully deoxygenated. Results of the evaluation of accuracy, limit of detection, stability, and photostability are presented. An experiment measuring the spatiotemporal variation of oxygen distribution within the photosynthesis and respiration of Chlorella vulgaris is demonstrated. It is shown that the nanofiber-based optical sensor film could serve as a promising method for rapid oxygen monitoring in aqueous applications.

ABSTRACT

The first-stage storage of the Three Gorges Project started on the 1st June, 2003 and ended on the 10th June, 2003. In order to investigate the influences of the Three Gorges Project on the Changjiang Estuary and adjacent area environment, a cruise was carried out from the 15th June, 2003 to the 25th June, 2003 to synthetically study the environment. Suspended matter concentrations (SMC) in different water layers at different sites were calculated and distributions of SMC were discussed combining with salinity and temperature of water based on recovered data. In results, SMC increase from surface to bottom in Changjiang Estuary and adjacent area. Suspended matters are enriched in the water over the river mouth bar and alongshore area which are located at the west of 123 degrees E. Compared to that before the storage, SMC are reduced obviously in the Changjiang course and south branch after the storage. For example, at the Xuliujing, SMC are reduced from 400 - 500 mg/L to 60.2 mg/L, and in the south branch, from 445 mg/L to 148 mg/L. In other areas, SMC do not show a significant change that they are both less than 10 mg/L in the surface player and 100 mg/L in bottom player. Generally, the distributed patterns of SMC in the investigation area after the storage are still similar to that before the storage.
