ABSTRACT

Many odors, like perfumes, are complex mixtures of chiral and achiral molecules where the cost-efficient (enantio-)selective sensing represents a major technical challenge. Here, we present a colorimetric sensor array of surface-mounted metal-organic-framework (SURMOF) films in Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavities. The optical properties of the FP-SURMOF films with different chiral and achiral structures are affected by the (enantio-)selective adsorption of the analytes in the SURMOF pores, resulting in different responses to the analyte molecules. The read-out of the sensor array is performed by the digital camera of a common smartphone, where the RGB values are determined. By analyzing the sensor array data with simple machine learning algorithms, the analytes are discriminated. After demonstrating the enantioselective response for a pair of pure chiral odor molecules, we apply the sensor array to detect and discriminate a large number (16) of common commercial perfumes and eau de toilettes. While our untrained human nose is not able to discriminate all perfumes, the presented colorimetric sensor array can classify all perfumes with great classification accuracy. Moreover, the sensor array was used to identify unlabeled samples correctly. We foresee such an FP-chiral-SURMOF-based sensor array as a powerful approach toward inexpensive selective odors sensing applications.

ABSTRACT

Capturing CO2 using clamshell/eggshell-derived CaO adsorbent can not only reduce carbon emissions but also alleviate the impact of trash on the environment. However, organic acid was usually used, high-temperature calcination was often performed, and CO2 was inevitably released during preparing CaO adsorbents from shell wastes. In this work, CaO-based CO2 adsorbent was greenly prepared by calcium-induced hydrogenation of clamshell and eggshell wastes in one pot at room/moderate temperature. CO2 adsorption experiments were performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The adsorption performance of the adsorbents obtained from the mechanochemical reaction (BM-C/E-CaO) was superior to that of the adsorbents obtained from the thermochemical reaction (Cal-C/E-CaO). The CO2 adsorption capacity of BM-C-CaO at 650 °C is up to 36.82 wt%, but the adsorption decay rate of the sample after 20 carbonation/calcination cycles is only 30.17%. This study offers an alternative energy-saving method for greenly preparing CaO-based adsorbent from shell wastes.

ABSTRACT

An optical sensor array based on photonic Fabry-Pérot films of surface-mounted metal-organic-frameworks (SURMOFs) with different homochiral structures is presented. It is used to detect and enantioselectively discriminant 3 pairs of chiral odor molecules, either pure or in binary mixtures.

ABSTRACT

Superior sensitive, selective, and repeatable real-time detection of low concentrations of benzene vapor is vitally important for environmental protection and human health. A benzene vapor sensor using three-dimensional photonic crystals (3-D PCs) based on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8@graphene quantum dots (ZIF-8@GQDs) was proposed. The 3-D PCs were acquired by centrifuging ZIF-8@GQDs pseudo-solutions, which were prepared via hydrothermal methods. The application of the ZIF-8@GQDs 3-D PCs sensor for optical benzene vapor detection via the strong π-π stacking interactions and large specific surface area and abundant open-framework structure of the ZIF-8@GQDs was investigated. The ZIF-8@GQDs 3-D PCs sensor exhibits a more sensitive response to benzene vapor compared with the ZIF-8 3-D PCs sensor. The relationship between the wavelength shift and the benzene vapor concentration was demonstrated to be linear. Additionally, the ZIF-8@GQDs 3-D PCs sensor presents a fast optical response and recovery times of 1 s and 7 s for 200 ppm benzene vapor detection, the benzene vapor detection limit can reach 1 ppm, and the deviation of the reflected wavelength varied within 2 nm after 10 cycles. Moreover, the fabricated ZIF-8@GQDs 3-D PCs sensor exhibited reliability and exceptional thermal and long-time storage stability, demonstrating great potential for practical benzene vapor sensing applications.
