ABSTRACT

This prospective study was designed to propose a novel method of assessing proactive personality by combining text mining technology and Item Response Theory (IRT) to measure proactive personality more efficiently. We got freely expressed texts (essay question text dataset and social media text dataset) and item response data on the topic of proactive personality from 901 college students. To enhance validity and reliability, three different approaches were employed in the study. In Method 1, we used item response data to develop a proactive personality evaluation model based on IRT. In Method 2, we used freely expressed texts to develop a proactive personality evaluation model based on text mining. In Method 3, we utilized the text mining results as the prior information for the IRT estimation and built a proactive personality evaluation model combining text mining and IRT. Finally, we evaluated those three approaches via the confusion matrix indicators. The major result revealed that (1) the combined method based on essay question text, micro-blog text with pre-estimated IRT parameters performed the highest accuracy of 0.849; (2) the combined method using essay question text and pre-estimated IRT parameters performed the highest sensitivity of 0.821; (3) the text classification method based on essay question text had the best performance on the specificity of 0.959; and (4) if the models were considered comprehensively, the combined method using essay question text, micro-blog text, and pre-estimated IRT parameters achieved the best performance. Thus, we concluded that the novel combined method was significantly better than the other two traditional methods based on IRT and text mining.

ABSTRACT

Utilizing the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model as the theoretical framework, this study examines the relationship between job stress, job burnout, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment among 1,906 university teachers in China, and investigates teachers' differences across groups. The result of SEM indicates that job burnout and job satisfaction could play mediating roles between job stress and organizational commitment. The result of multi-group analysis shows that for national university teachers, the positive effect of job stress on job burnout is the highest among three types of university teachers, the negative effect of job burnout on organizational commitment is lower compared with provincial university teachers and the negative effect of job burnout on job satisfaction is lower compared with provincial university teachers. Only for provincial university teachers, the job stress can significantly positively predict organizational commitment, and the independent mediating effect of job burnout is significantly greater than job satisfaction. The practical advice to enhance Chinese university teachers' organizational commitment was provided in the end.

ABSTRACT

With the latest, rapid developments of the Internet, young people have become the main group in the online world. Congruently, Internet problem behaviors have shown a significant growth trend among adolescents. The present paper explores the factors affecting adolescents' problem network behavior from the perspective of their shyness, gender, and loneliness, and provides suggestions for guiding these young people toward using the network rationally. The study surveyed 5,130 teenagers from Shandong province in China to investigate the moderating effect of gender on the relationship between shyness and problem network behavior, and the mediating effect of loneliness on the moderating effect. The results indicated that the level of shyness among girls was significantly higher than that among boys, whereas the prevalence of cyberbullying, pathological Internet use, and Internet gaming disorder was significantly lower for girls than for boys. The relationship among shyness, cyberbullying, and Internet gaming disorder was found to be moderated by gender, and the problems of cyberbullying and Internet gaming disorder faced by shy boys were greater than those faced by shy girls. In addition, the moderating effect of gender on cyberbullying and Internet gaming disorder was found to occur through the mediating factor of loneliness. The paper concludes with a discussion of the theoretical significance and generalizability of our research results.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to explore the mediating effects of internet gaming disorder, social network use, and generalized pathological internet use (GPIU) on the association between loneliness and depression. A total of 2211 junior high school students completed questionnaires regarding loneliness, internet gaming disorder, social network use, GPIU, and depression (aged 10-16 years). The results of a structural equation model revealed that (a) the path coefficient of loneliness to depression was significantly positive, (b) loneliness could not predict depression through GPIU directly, but (c) loneliness could predict depression through internet gaming disorder to GPIU, (d) loneliness could predict depression through social network use to GPIU, and (e) loneliness could not predict depression through internet gaming disorder to social network use to GPIU. These results provided significant implications for the prevention and reduction of depression in Chinese junior high school students.

ABSTRACT

This short-term longitudinal study examined the reciprocal associations among shyness, interpersonal relationships, and loneliness in a sample of 361 Chinese college freshmen (138 male students, mean age = 18.57 years). A fully cross-lagged panel design was used in which shyness, interpersonal relationships, and loneliness were assessed at three time points separated by 8 months. The results indicated that the associations among shyness, interpersonal relationships, and loneliness were dynamic and bidirectional. The self-report scores and the pattern of cross-lagged associations among shyness, interpersonal relationships, and loneliness were the same for male and female students at all three times. Implications for loneliness interventions and future research directions are provided.
