ABSTRACT

Monitoring the temperature of the coal gangue mountains is fundamental to preventing their spontaneous combustion. However, the existing temperature monitoring systems fail to achieve stable, pollution-free temperature monitoring without affecting vegetation growth in these mountains. To address this issue, this work proposes a flexible thermoelectric device (FTD) based on a protrusion-structured liquid metal elastomer (LME). Utilizing a high-thermal-conductivity LME, the FTD adheres closely to the surface of the gravity heat pipe (GHP), ensuring compatibility between FTD and the curved surface of the GHP. Simultaneously, employing a low-thermal-conductivity elastomer helps concentrate heat onto FTD, thereby enhancing thermoelectric power generation efficiency. Additionally, the impact of the shape, size, and height of the protrusion structure at the cold end of the GHP on its efficiency was also investigated. The practical application of FTD on GHP was demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

Obesity is a risk factor for glucose metabolism disorder. This study explored the association between the tri-ponderal mass index (TMI) and indicators of glucose metabolism disorder in children with obesity in China. This retrospective case-control study included children aged 3 to 18 years old diagnosed with obesity at Jiangxi Provincial Children's Hospital (China) between January 2020 and April 2022. Demographic and clinical characteristics were obtained from the medical records. Factors associated with glucose metabolism disorder were explored by logistic regression analysis. Pearson correlations were calculated to evaluate the relationships between TMI and indicators of glucose metabolism disorder. The analysis included 781 children. The prevalence of glucose metabolism disorder was 22.0% (172/781). The glucose metabolism disorder group had an older age (11.13 ±â€…2.19 vs 10.45 ±â€…2.33 years old, P = .001), comprised more females (76.8% vs 66.9%, P = .008), had a higher Tanner index (P = .001), and had a larger waist circumference (89.00 [82.00-95.00] vs 86.00 [79.00-93.75] cm, P = .025) than the non-glucose metabolism disorder group. There were no significant differences between the glucose metabolism disorder and non-glucose metabolism disorder groups in other clinical parameters, including body mass index (26.99 [24.71-30.58] vs 26.57 [24.55-29.41] kg/m2) and TMI (18.38 [17.11-19.88] vs 18.37 [17.11-19.88] kg/m3). Multivariable logistic regression did not identify any factors associated with glucose metabolism disorder. Furthermore, TMI was only very weakly or negligibly correlated with indicators related to glucose metabolism disorder. TMI may not be a useful indicator to screen for glucose metabolism disorder in children with obesity in China.

ABSTRACT

Flexible piezoresistive sensors (FPSs) have the advantages of compact structure, convenient signal acquisition and fast dynamic response; they are widely used in motion detection, wearable electronic devices and electronic skins. FPSs accomplish the measurement of stresses through piezoresistive material (PM). However, FPSs based on a single PM cannot achieve high sensitivity and wide measurement range simultaneously. To solve this problem, a heterogeneous multi-material flexible piezoresistive sensor (HMFPS) with high sensitivity and a wide measurement range is proposed. The HMFPS consists of a graphene foam (GF), a PDMS layer and an interdigital electrode. Among them, the GF serves as a sensing layer, providing high sensitivity, and the PDMS serves as a supporting layer, providing a large measurement range. The influence and principle of the heterogeneous multi-material (HM) on the piezoresistivity were investigated by comparing the three HMFPS with different sizes. The HM proved to be an effective way to produce flexible sensors with high sensitivity and a wide measurement range. The HMFPS-10 has a sensitivity of 0.695 kPa-1, a measurement range of 0-14,122 kPa, fast response/recovery (83 ms and 166 ms) and excellent stability (2000 cycles). In addition, the potential application of the HMFPS-10 in human motion monitoring was demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

To understand the psychological effects on behavior of girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP) and to explore the role of gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog (GnRHa) in the reversal or blocking of the negative psychological effects on behaviors of girls with ICPP. A total of 100 girls with ICPP diagnosed at the Department of Endocrinology of Jiangxi Children's Hospital were divided into the treatment group and observation group with 50 cases in each group. The control group consisted of 50 healthy girls examined at our hospital during the same period. The Achenbach Child Behavior Check List ([CBCL] for parents) was used to evaluate the psychological effects on behavior of the girls diagnosed with ICPP and the girls in the control group, and the scores of related behavioral factors were calculated. At the same time, the psychological effects on behaviors of the girls with ICPP treated with GnRHa were followed up. (1) There were 100 girls with ICPP and 30 with behavioral problems. There were 50 normal healthy girls (control group) with 3 cases of behavior problems. Of the 50 girls with ICPP, after treatment, 8 had behavioral issues. The rate of abnormal psychological effects on behavior in the group of girls with ICPP before treatment was significantly higher than in the control group (P < .01), and after treatment, the rate was lower than before treatment (P < .05). (2) The scores of depression, social withdrawal, poor communication, and school discipline violation in the ICPP group were higher than those in the control group, with a statistical significance (P < .01). (3) After 24 months of GnRHa treatment for girls in the ICPP group, the scores of 4 factors, including depression, social withdrawal, poor communication, and violation of discipline in the Achenbach CBCL, were significantly different before and after treatment (P < .05). (1) Girls with ICPP have low self-esteem, low self-confidence, high incidences of psychological effects on behavior problems, manifested in depression, withdrawal, poor communication, discipline violations, and other aspects; (2) GnRHa treatment can reverse the low self-esteem and low self-confidence of girls with ICPP to varying degrees.

ABSTRACT

Turner syndrome (TS) is a congenital chromosomal abnormality that affects approximately 1 in 2,500 people. Both in China and abroad, few studies exist on the incidence of tumors in patients with TS. Most reported cases are complicated with gonadal germ cell tumors, and extragonadal tumors are rare, with the latter not yet being reported in China. Through chromosome karyotype analysis and surgical exploration, a pediatric patent was diagnosed with TS complicated with gonadoblastoma and adrenal neuroblastoma. The patient was short in stature and had a facial deformity. After admission, adrenal computed tomography was conducted, and a right adrenal mass was identified as a neurogenic tumor. After surgical resection and gonadal exploration, the pathological results revealed left gonadoblastoma, right gonadal stromal cell hyperplasia, and ganglion neuroblastoma (mixed type) in the right adrenal gland. Pediatric patients with TS have an increased likelihood of developing neuroblastoma and adrenal-related tumors, and changes in adrenal hormone levels and clinical manifestations are often not obvious when combined with adrenal-related tumors. To avoid missed diagnosis and delayed treatment, screening for adrenal tumors is therefore recommended for patients with TS before the initiation of growth hormone treatment.
