ABSTRACT

In this paper, coacervates were formed with mixed micelles consisting of the anionic amino acid surfactant sodium lauroylsarcosinate (NLS) and amphoteric surfactant cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) in combination with cationic guar gum. Based on personal care formulation studies, coacervates were prepared by diluting a concentrated system with water to better suit the product application process. The phase behavior during dilution was revealed by turbidity, which was influenced by the mixed micelle ratio (X), salt concentration, and dilution ratio (R). Optical microscopy, cryo-SEM, SAXS and rotational rheometry were used to characterize the structure and properties of the coacervates, which strongly depended on the interaction strength between the polymer and micelles. Dominated by electrostatic interactions, the coacervates exhibited a dense porous structure with low water content and a high viscoelastic modulus, while weakened interactions resulted in a looser mesh internal structure with lower viscoelasticity, enhancing skin adsorption. These findings enhance our understanding of polymer-mixed micelle systems and offer practical strategies for controlling the properties of coacervates.

ABSTRACT

The H10 subtype avian influenza virus (AIV) poses an ongoing threat to both birds and humans. Notably, fatal human cases of H10N3 and H10N8 infections have drawn public attention. In 2022, we isolated two H10N3 viruses (A/chicken/Shandong/0101/2022 and A/chicken/Shandong/0603/2022) from diseased chickens in China. Genome analysis revealed that these viruses were genetically associated with human-origin H10N3 virus, with internal genes originating from local H9N2 viruses. Compared to the H10N8 virus (A/chicken/Jiangxi/102/2013), the H10N3 viruses exhibited enhanced thermostability, increased viral release from erythrocytes, and accumulation of hemagglutinin (HA) protein. Additionally, we evaluated the pathogenicity of both H10N3 and H10N8 viruses in mice. We found that viral titers could be detected in the lungs and nasal turbinates of mice infected with the two H10N3 viruses, whereas H10N8 virus titers were detectable in the lungs and brains of mice. Notably, the proportion of double HA Q222R and G228S mutations in H10N3 viruses has increased since 2019. However, the functional roles of the Q222R and G228S double mutations in the HA gene of H10N3 viruses remain unknown and warrant further investigation. Our study highlights the potential public health risk posed by the H10N3 virus. A spillover event of AIV to humans could be a foretaste of a looming pandemic. Therefore, it is imperative to continuously monitor the evolution of the H10N3 influenza virus to ensure targeted prevention and control measures against influenza outbreaks.

ABSTRACT

Conventional magnetoelectric generators are regarded as effective devices for harvesting concentrated hydraulic power but are ineffective for dispersed hydropower (e.g., raindrops) due to their bulkiness and immobility. Here, we propose a superhydrophobic magnetoelectric generator (MSMEG) based on an elastic magnetic film that can efficiently convert the energy of lightweight water droplets into electricity. The MSMEG consists of five parts: a superhydrophobic magnetic material-based film (SMMF), a coil, a NdFeB magnet, an acrylic housing, and an expandable polystyrene (EPS) base. The SMMF with coil can deform/recover when droplets impact/leave the MSMEG, resulting in a peak current, peak charge density, and peak power density of ∼13.02 mA, ∼1826.5 mC/m2, and ∼1413.0 mW/m2, respectively, with a load resistance of 47 Ω. Related working mechanism is analyzed through Maxwell numerical simulation, which is used for further guidance on increasing the electrical output of the MSMEG. Furthermore, the MSMEG can quickly charge a commercial capacitor with 2.7 V/1 F to 1.18 V within 200 s and power diverse electronic devices (e.g., light emitting diodes (LEDs), fans) with constant excitation by water droplets. We believe that such an MSMEG is expected to provide a promising strategy for efficiently harvesting dispersed raindrop energy.

ABSTRACT

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) presents a significant global health challenge due to its high incidence, poor prognosis, and limited treatment options. As a pivotal regulator of protein stability, E3 ubiquitin ligase plays a crucial role in tumorigenesis and development. This review provides an overview of the latest research on the involvement of E3 ubiquitin ligase in hepatocellular carcinoma and elucidates its significance in hepatocellular carcinoma cell proliferation, invasion, and evasion from immune surveillance. Special attention is given to the functions of RING, HECT, and RBR E3 ubiquitin ligases and their association with hepatocellular carcinoma progression. By dissecting the molecular mechanisms and regulatory networks governed by E3 ubiquitin ligase, several potential therapeutic strategies are proposed: including the development of specific inhibitors targeting E3 ligases; augmentation of their tumor suppressor activity through drug or gene therapy; utilization of E3 ubiquitin ligase to modulate immune checkpoint proteins for improved efficacy of immunotherapy; combination strategies integrating traditional therapies with E3 ubiquitin ligase inhibitors; as well as biomarker development based on E3 ubiquitin ligase activity. Furthermore, this review discusses the prospect of overcoming drug resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma treatment through these novel approaches. Overall, this review establishes a theoretical foundation and offers fresh insights into harnessing the potential of E3 ubiquitin ligase for treating hepatocellular carcinoma while highlighting future research directions that pave the way for clinical translation studies and new drug discoveries.

ABSTRACT

The H7 subtype avian influenza viruses are circulating widely worldwide, causing significant economic losses to the poultry industry and posing a serious threat to human health. In 2019, H7N2 and H7N9 co-circulated in Chinese poultry, yet the risk of H7N2 remained unclear. We isolated and sequenced four H7N2 viruses from chickens, revealing them as novel reassortants with H7N9-derived HA, M, NS genes and H9N2-derived PB2, PB1, PA,NP, NA genes. To further explore the key segment of pathogenicity, H7N2-H7N9NA and H7N2-H9N2HA single-substitution were constructed. Pathogenicity study showed H7N2 isolates to be highly pathogenic in chickens, with H7N2-H7N9NA slightly weaker than H7N2-Wild type. Transcriptomic analysis suggested that H7N9-derived HA genes primarily drove the high pathogenicity of H7N2 isolates, eliciting a strong inflammatory response. These findings underscored the increased threat posed by reassorted H7N2 viruses to chickens, emphasizing the necessity of long-term monitoring of H7 subtype avian influenza viruses.

ABSTRACT

Electromagnetic generators are conventionally used to harvest energy from large water bodies, but they are ineffective for harvesting low hydro-energy, such as raindrops or fogs, due to their bulky, heavy and immovable. Unfortunately, developing new strategies that are lightweight, small, and have high conversion efficiency to convert such low hydro-energy into electricity remains a challenge. Herein, a flexible droplet-based hybrid electricity generator (DHEG) consisting of a droplet-based electricity generator (DEG) and an electromagnetic generator (EMG) is proposed to convert the dual energy of water droplets into electricity simultaneously. The DHEG is assembled by facilely merging DEG and EMG using conductive elastic multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polydimethylsiloxane (MWCNTs/PDMS) film. The MWCNTs/PDMS film can not only serve as a bottom electrode for switching on the DEG, but also as an elastic component for the EMG to vibrate the coil when impacted by water droplets. Activated by a single 58.2 µL droplet falling from a height of 50 cm, the peak voltage, current and power generated by the DHEG are ≈84.6 V, ≈19.85 mA, and ≈595.8 µW, respectively. The energy conversion efficiency of the DHEG is up to ≈13.8%. This flexible hybrid generator may provide a promising strategy for effectively harvesting energy from raindrops.

ABSTRACT

Tissue stiffening is a predominant feature of fibrotic disorders, but the response of macrophages to changes in tissue stiffness and cellular context in fibrotic diseases remains unclear. Here, we found that the mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo1 was up-regulated in hepatic fibrosis. Macrophages lacking Piezo1 showed sustained inflammation and impaired spontaneous resolution of early liver fibrosis. Further analysis revealed an impairment of clearance of apoptotic cells by macrophages in the fibrotic liver. Macrophages showed enhanced efferocytosis when cultured on rigid substrates but not soft ones, suggesting stiffness-dependent efferocytosis of macrophages required Piezo1 activation. Besides, Piezo1 was involved in the efficient acidification of the engulfed cargo in the phagolysosomes and affected the subsequent expression of anti-inflammation genes after efferocytosis. Pharmacological activation of Piezo1 increased the efferocytosis capacity of macrophages and accelerated the resolution of inflammation and fibrosis. Our study supports the antifibrotic role of Piezo1-mediated mechanical sensation in liver fibrosis, suggesting that targeting PIEZO1 to enhance macrophage efferocytosis could induce fibrosis regression.

ABSTRACT

Optical scatterometry, also referred to as optical critical dimension (OCD) metrology, is a widely used technique for characterizing nanostructures in semiconductor industry. As a model-based optical metrology, the measurement in optical scatterometry is not straightforward but involves solving a complicated inverse problem. So far, the methods for solving the inverse scattering problem, whether traditional or deep-learning-based, necessitate a predefined geometric model, but they are also constrained by this model with poor applicability. Here, we demonstrate a sketch-guided neural network (SGNN) for nanostructure reconstruction in optical scatterometry. By learning from training data based on the designed generic profile model, the neural network acquires not only scattering knowledge but also sketching techniques, that allows it to draw the profiles corresponding to the input optical signature, regardless of whether the sample structure is the same as the generic profile model or not. The accuracy and strong generalizability of proposed approach is validated by using a series of one-dimensional gratings. Experiments have also demonstrated that it is comparable to nonlinear regression methods and outperforms traditional deep learning methods. To our best knowledge, this is the first time that the concept of sketching has been introduced into deep learning for solving the inverse scattering problem. We believe that our method will provide a novel solution for semiconductor metrology, enabling fast and accurate reconstruction of nanostructures.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common type of malignant tumor where the prognosis is dismal. Circular RNA (CircRNA) is a novel RNA that regulates downstream gene transcription and translation to influence the progression of HCC. However, the regulatory relationship that exists between E3 ligases, which is a class of post-translational modifying proteins, and circRNA remains unclear. METHODS: Based on the E3 ubiquitin ligase in the competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network, a circRNA-regulated E3 ubiquitin ligase signature (CRE3UL) was developed. A CRE3UL signature was created using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) and Cox regression analysis and merged it with clinicopathologic characteristics to generate a nomogram for prognosis prediction. The pRRophetic algorithm was utilized and immunological checkpoints were analyzed to compare the responses of patients in the high-risk group (HRG) and low-risk group (LRG) to targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Finally, experimental research will further elucidate the relationship between E3 ubiquitin ligase signature and HCC. RESULTS: HRG patients were found to have a worse prognosis than LRG patients. Furthermore, significant variations in prognosis were observed among different subgroups based on various clinical characteristics. The CRE3UL signature was identified as being an independent prognostic indicator. The nomogram that combined clinical characteristics and the CRE3UL signature was found to accurately predict the prognosis of HCC patients and demonstrated greater clinical utility than the current TNM staging approach. According to anticancer medication sensitivity predictions, the tumors of HRG patients were more responsive to gefitinib and nilotinib. From immune-checkpoint markers analysis, immunotherapy was identified as being more probable to assist those in the HRG. CONCLUSIONS: We found a significant correlation between the CRE3UL signature and the tumor microenvironment, enabling precise prognosis prediction for HCC patients. Additionally, a nomogram was developed that performs well in predicting the overall survival (OS) of HCC patients. This provides valuable guidance for clinicians in devising specific personalized treatment strategies.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Pseudomonas aeruginosa has strong drug resistance and can tolerate a variety of antibiotics, which is a major problem in the management of antibiotic-resistant infections. Direct prediction of multi-drug resistance (MDR) resistance phenotypes of P. aeruginosa isolates and clinical samples by genotype is helpful for timely antibiotic treatment. Methods: In the study, whole genome sequencing (WGS) data of 494 P. aeruginosa isolates were used to screen key anti-microbial resistance (AMR)-associated genes related to imipenem (IPM), meropenem (MEM), piperacillin/tazobactam (TZP), and levofloxacin (LVFX) resistance in P. aeruginosa by comparing genes with copy number differences between resistance and sensitive strains. Subsequently, for the direct prediction of the resistance of P. aeruginosa to four antibiotics by the AMR-associated features screened, we collected 74 P. aeruginosa positive sputum samples to sequence by metagenomics next-generation sequencing (mNGS), of which 1 sample with low quality was eliminated. Then, we constructed the resistance prediction model. Results: We identified 93, 88, 80, 140 AMR-associated features for IPM, MEM, TZP, and LVFX resistance in P. aeruginosa. The relative abundance of AMR-associated genes was obtained by matching mNGS and WGS data. The top 20 features with importance degree for IPM, MEM, TZP, and LVFX resistance were used to model, respectively. Then, we used the random forest algorithm to construct resistance prediction models of P. aeruginosa, in which the areas under the curves of the IPM, MEM, TZP, and LVFX resistance prediction models were all greater than 0.8, suggesting these resistance prediction models had good performance. Conclusion: In summary, mNGS can predict the resistance of P. aeruginosa by directly detecting AMR-associated genes, which provides a reference for rapid clinical detection of drug resistance of pathogenic bacteria.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The performance of healthcare workers directly impacts patient safety and treatment outcomes. This was particularly evident during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze research trends on factors influencing work performance among healthcare workers through bibliometric analysis and conduct a comparative analysis from macro and micro perspectives before and after the COVID-19 pandemic to complement the existing research. METHODS: This study involved a bibliometric analysis of 1408 articles related to work performance in the healthcare field published between 2010 and 2023, using the Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases, and 37 articles were selected to determine the factors influencing work performance. RESULTS: By conducting a bibliometric analysis of the articles based on country, institution, journal, co-cited references, and keywords, this study identified a significant growth trend regarding the factors influencing work performance in the healthcare field, and research hotspots shifted from organizational factors like standard towards psychological factors such as burnout, anxiety, and depression following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Subsequently, this study extracted 10 micro-level and 9 macro-level influencing factors from the selected articles for supplementary analysis. Furthermore, this study conducted a comparative analysis of the impact of these factors on work performance before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: This study addressed the limitations of previous studies regarding incomplete extraction of factors influencing work performance and unclear comparisons of parameters before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings provide insights and guidance for improving the performance of healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) caused by osteoporosis is a common clinical fracture type. There are many surgical treatment options for OVCF, but there is a lack of comparison among different options. Therefore, we counted a total of 104 cases of OVCF operations with different surgical plans, followed up the patients, and compared the surgical outcome indications before, after and during the follow-up. METHOD: 104 patients who underwent posterior osteotomy (Modified PSO, SPO, PSO, VCR) and kyphosis correction surgery at our hospital between April 2006 and August 2021 with a minimum follow-up period of 24 months were included. All cases were injuries induced by a fall incurred while standing or lifting heavy objects without high-energy trauma. The mean CT value was 71 HU, which was below 110 HU, indicating severe osteoporosis. The indications for surgery included gait disturbance due to severe pain with pseudarthrosis, increased kyphotic angle, and progressive neurological symptoms. Pre- and postoperative CL, TLK, TK, PrTK, TKmax, GK, LL, PI, SS, PT, SVA, TPA, were investigated radiologically. Additionally, We evaluated estimated blood loss, surgical time and perioperative symptom. RESULT: The results show, after operation, TLK (37.32 ± 10.61° vs. 11.01 ± 8.06°, P < 0.001), TK (35.42 ± 17.64° vs. 25.62 ± 12.24°, P < 0.001), TKmax (49.71 ± 16.32° vs. 24.12 ± 13.34°, P < 0.001), SVA (44.91 ± 48.67 vs. 23.52 ± 30.21, P = 0.013), CL (20.23 ± 13.21° vs. 11.45 ± 9.85°, P = 0.024) and TPA (27.44 ± 12.76° vs. 13.91 ± 9.24°, P = 0.009) were improved significantly in modified Pedicle subtraction osteotomy (mPSO) after operation. During follow-up, TLK (37.32 ± 10.61° vs. 13.88 ± 10.02°, P < 0.001) and TKmax (49.71 ± 16.32° vs. 24.12 ± 13.34°, P < 0.001) were improved significantly in Modified PSO group. In additon, estimated blood loss (790.0 ± 552.2 ml vs. 987.0 ± 638.5 ml, P = 0.038), time of operation (244.1 ± 63.0 min vs. 292.4 ± 87.6 min, P = 0.025) were favorable in Modified PSO group compared to control group. CONCLUSION: To conclude, mPSO could acquire a favorable degree of kyphosis correction as well as fewer follow-up complications. Compared with other surgical methods, it also has the advantages of less surgical trauma and shorter operation time. It can be an effective solution for the treatment of OVCF.

This work considers the flow field as two-dimensional turbulent flow and studies the steady-state properties of heat transfer and the pressure of the suspension nozzle. An adiabatic wall parallel to the moving wall and two slit entrances at either end of the adiabatic wall make up the rectangular flow field. The SST k - ω turbulence model is used in the turbulence computation. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses are conducted on the distribution of the flow field, temperature field, local Nusselt number, local pressure coefficient, average Nusselt number, and average pressure coefficient under various combination conditions. The findings indicate that when the suspension nozzle's flow field varies greatly, wall-jet velocity ratio is 0.1. A rise in Jet inclination angle is not helpful for the wall's suspension, and it has minimal effect on the flow field. The flow field is greatly influenced by separation space-slit width ratio. Larger separation space-slit width ratio values are advantageous for the wall's heat transmission but unfavorable for the wall's suspension. The flow field is most influenced by wall-jet velocity ratio. The wall's ability to convey heat is stronger the higher the wall-jet velocity ratio, but its ability to support weight falls.

BACKGROUND: Our study aims to address two pivotal questions: "What are the recent advancements in understanding the etiology of urological tumors through Mendelian Randomization?" and "How can Mendelian Randomization be more effectively applied in clinical settings to enhance patient health outcomes in the future?" METHODS: In our systematic review conducted in April 2023, we utilized databases like PubMed and Web of Science to explore the influence of Mendelian Randomization in urological oncological diseases. We focused on studies published from January 2018, employing keywords related to urological tumors and Mendelian Randomization, supplemented with MeSH terms and manual reference checks. Our inclusion criteria targeted original research studies, while we excluded reports and non-relevant articles.  Data extraction followed a PICO-based approach, and bias risk was independently evaluated, with discrepancies resolved through discussion. This systematic approach adhered to PRISMA guidelines for accuracy and thoroughness in reporting. RESULTS: From the initial 457 publications, we narrowed down to 43 full-text articles after screening and quality assessments.A deeper understanding of Mendelian Randomization can help us explore risk factors with a clear causal relationship to urological tumors.This insight may pave the way for future research in early diagnosis, treatment, and management of associated diseases. CONCLUSION: Our review underscores the value of MR in urogenital tumor research, highlighting its efficacy in establishing causality and its potential to clarify disease mechanisms. Despite challenges like large sample sizes and variant identification, MR offers new perspectives for understanding and managing these tumors, suggesting a trend towards more inclusive and diverse research approaches.

Medicinal plants, as medicinal materials and important drug components, have been used in traditional and folk medicine for ages. However, being sessile organisms, they are seriously affected by extreme environmental conditions and abiotic stresses such as salt, heavy metal, temperature, and water stresses. Medicinal plants usually produce specific secondary metabolites to survive such stresses, and these metabolites can often be used for treating human diseases. Recently, medicinal plants have been found to partner with endophytic fungi to form a long-term, stable, and win-win symbiotic relationship. Endophytic fungi can promote secondary metabolite accumulation in medicinal plants. The close relationship can improve host plant resistance to the abiotic stresses of soil salinity, drought, and extreme temperatures. Their symbiosis also sheds light on plant growth and active compound production. Here, we show that endophytic fungi can improve the host medicinal plant resistance to abiotic stress by regulating active compounds, reducing oxidative stress, and regulating the cell ion balance. We also identify the deficiencies and burning issues of available studies and present promising research topics for the future. This review provides guidance for endophytic fungi research to improve the ability of medicinal plants to resist abiotic stress. It also suggests ideas and methods for active compound accumulation in medicinal plants and medicinal material development during the response to abiotic stress.

As one of the earliest discovered lncRNA molecules, lncRNA H19 is usually expressed in large quantities during embryonic development and is involved in cell differentiation and tissue formation. In recent years, the role of lncRNA H19 in tumors has been gradually recognized. Increasing evidence suggests that its aberrant expression is closely related to cancer development. LncRNA H19 as an oncogene not only promotes the growth, proliferation, invasion and metastasis of many tumors, but also develops resistance to treatment, affecting patients' prognosis and survival. Therefore, in this review, we summarise the extensive research on the involvement of lncRNA H19 in tumor progression and discuss how lncRNA H19, as a key target gene, affects tumor sensitivity to radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy by participating in multiple cellular processes and regulating multiple signaling pathways, which provides a promising prospect for further research into the treatment of cancer.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Previous studies have reported an inconsistent relationship between overactive bladder (OAB) and the consumption of tea, coffee, and caffeine. Our study aims to determine these associations in a large and nationally representative adult sample. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 15,379 participants from the 2005-2018 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. The outcome was the risk of wet OAB that was diagnosed when the OAB symptom score was ≥3 with urgent urinary incontinence and excluded other diseases affecting diagnosis. The exposures were the consumption of tea, coffee, and caffeine. Weighted logistic regression models were established to explore these associations by calculating odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), as did restricted cubic splines (RCS) used to analyze the nonlinear associations. RESULT: Of all the participants (n = 15,379), 2207 had wet OAB. Mean [SE] consumption of tea, total coffee, caffeinated coffee, decaffeinated coffee, and caffeine was 233.6 [15.7] g/day, 364.3 [15.5] g/day, 301.6 [14.9] g/day, 62.7 [7.9] g/day, 175.5 [6.6] mg/day in participants with wet OAB, respectively. In the fully adjusted model, compared to those without tea consumption, the high consumption of tea (>481 g/day) was associated with an increased risk of wet OAB (OR: 1.29; 95%CI: 1.01-1.64). Low decaffeinated coffee (0.001-177.6 g/day) had a negative association with the risk (OR: 0.66; 95%CI: 0.49-0.90). In the RCS analysis, tea consumption showed a positive linear association with the risk of wet OAB, and decaffeinated coffee showed a nonlinear relationship with the risk and had a turning point of 78 g/day in the U-shaped curve between 0 and 285 g/day. Besides, total coffee, caffeinated coffee, and caffeine consumption had no significant association with the risk. Interestingly, in the high tea consumption, participants with high total coffee consumption [>527.35 g/day, OR and 95%CI: 2.14(1.16-3.94)] and low caffeine consumption [0.1-74.0 mg/day, OR and 95%CI: 1.50(1.03-2.17)] were positively associated with the risk of wet OAB. CONCLUSION: High tea consumption was associated with the increased risk of wet OAB, especially intake together with high total coffee and low caffeine consumption, but no significant association with the single consumption of total coffee and caffeine. Low decaffeinated coffee was associated with a decreased risk of wet OAB. It is necessary to control tea intake when managing the liquid intake of wet OAB patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have investigated the impact of basal metabolic rate (BMR) on the development of urolithiasis, and the causal relationship is yet to be established. In this study, a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was utilized to identify the causal relationship between BMR and risk of urolithiasis. METHOD: Genetic instruments for BMR were drawn from a public genome-wide association study (GWAS). Summary dates on BMR and urolithiasis were obtained from a GWAS meta-analysis with sample sizes of 454,874 and 212,453, respectively. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was provided as the main approach to estimate the causal relationship. The weighted-median method and the MR-Egger method were used as supplements to the IVW method. In addition, we conducted sensitivity analyses, including heterogeneity tests, pleiotropy tests and leave-one-out analysis, to assess the robustness of the outcomes. Furthermore, the funnel plot asymmetry was visually inspected to evaluate possible bias. RESULTS: The inverse-variance weighted data revealed that genetically predicted BMR significantly decreased the risk of urolithiasis [beta coefficient (beta): - 0.2366, odds ratio (OR): 0.7893, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.6504-0.9579, p = 0.0166]. CONCLUSIONS: BMR has causal effects on urolithiasis in an MR study, and the risk of urolithiasis in patients with lower levels of BMR is higher.

ABSTRACT

Background: From 1990 to 2019, low back pain (LBP) was the leading cause of years lived with disability (YLDs) in China. However, the change patterns of LBP and its risk factors in China remain unclear. Methods: Data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 were used. We used the join-point regression model and age-period-cohort analysis to evaluate the time trends of attributable risk factors on the burden of LBP. Results: In 2019, the risk factors included in this analysis accounted for 4.36 million YLDs of LBP, representing 42.2% of all YLDs of LBP in China, with 2.86 million due to occupational ergonomic factors, 1.74 million due to smoking, and 0.46 million due to high body mass index (BMI). The age-standardized YLD rates of LBP showed downward trends during 1990-2019, while there was a faster decline between 1990 and 1994. The curves of local drifts, which reflected the average annual percentage change across age groups, showed an increasing trend with age for high BMI and smoking, and a downward trend for occupational ergonomic factors. The YLD rates for LBP increased dramatically with age for high BMI, while it reached a peak at 40-60 years old for occupational ergonomic factors, and 65-80 years old for smoking. The period and cohort rate ratios of LBP YLD decreased in the past 3 decades for occupational ergonomic factors and smoking, while increased for high BMI. Conclusions: Our results provided strong evidence that there were diverse changing patterns for different risk factors, highlighting the need for risk-specific strategies. The translational potential of this article: China has the largest senior population and the fastest aging population in the world. Given that LBP typically occurs in the senior population, there would be an increasing LBP burden on China's health system. This suggests that effective strategies for LBP prevention should be strictly implemented in China, particularly in the senior population, which is of crucial translational potential.
