ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: China and India have unique traditional medicine systems with vast territory and rich medical resources. Traditional medicines in China include traditional Chinese medicine, Tibetan medicine, Mongolian medicine, Uyghur medicine, Dai medicine, etc. In the third national survey of Chinese medicine resources, 12694 medicinal materials were identified. Traditional medicines in India include Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Homoeopathy, etc. There are 7263 medicinal materials in India. AIM OF THE STUDY: To reveal the characteristics of medicinal materials between China and India respectively, and to compare the similarities and differences in terms of properties, tastes, medicinal parts and therapeutic uses and to promote the exchange of traditional medicine between China and India and the international trade of traditional medicine industry. METHODS: The information of medicinal materials between China and India was extracted from The Chinese Traditional Medicine Resource Records and Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China, as well as from 71 Indian herbal monographs. The information of each medicinal material, such as types, families, genera, properties, distribution, medicinal parts, efficacy, therapeutic uses, dosage form and dosage, was recorded in Excel for statistical analysis and visual comparison. RESULTS: A total of 12694 medicinal materials in China and 5362 medicinal materials in India were identified. The medicinal materials were mostly distributed in Southwest China and northern India. Plants were the main sources of medicinal materials. The common medicinal parts in China were whole medicinal materials, roots and rhizomes, and India used more renewable fruits, seeds and leaves. They are commonly used in the treatment of digestive system diseases. There were 1048 medicinal materials used by both China and India, which were distributed in 188 families and 685 genera. The Chinese and Indian pharmacopoeias had a total of 80 species of medicinal materials used by both China and India. CONCLUSIONS: The characteristics of medicinal materials between China and India were somewhat different, which was conducive to provide a reference basis for traditional medicine in China or India to increase the medicinal parts and indications when using a certain medicinal material, as well as to expand the source of medicine and introduce new resources. However, there were certain similarities and shared medicinal materials, which can tap the potential of bilateral trade of medicinal materials between China and India, so as to promote the medical cultural exchange and economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy and safety of Astragalus combined with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) blockers in treating stage III diabetic nephropathy (DN) by meta-analysis. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Wiley, and Web of Science databases were searched for articles published between August 2007 and August 2022. Clinical studies on Astragalus combined with RAAS blockers for the treatment of stage III DN were included. Meta-analysis was performed by RevMan 5.1 and Stata 14.3 software. RESULTS: A total of 32 papers were included in this meta-analysis, containing 2462 patients from randomized controlled trials, with 1244 receiving the combination treatment and 1218 solely receiving RAAS blockers. Astragalus combined with RAAS blockers yielded a significantly higher total effective rate (TER) (mean difference [MD] 3.63, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.59-5.09) and significantly reduced urinary protein excretion rate (UPER), serum creatinine (Scr), blood urine nitrogen (BUN) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbAlc) levels. In subgroup analysis, combining astragalus and angiotensin receptor blocker significantly lowered fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and 24 h urinary protein (24hUTP) levels, compared with the combined astragalus and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor treatment. Meanwhile, the latter significantly decreased the urinary microprotein (ß2-MG). Importantly, the sensitivity analysis confirmed the study's stability, and publication bias was not detected for UPER, BUN, HbAlc, FPG, or ß2-MG. However, the TER, SCr, and 24hUTP results suggested possible publication bias. CONCLUSIONS: The astragalus-RAAS blocker combination treatment is safe and improves outcomes; however, rigorous randomized, large-scale, multi-center, double-blind trials are needed to evaluate its efficacy and safety in stage III DN.


Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors are commonly used to treat diabetic neuropathy (DN) and Astragalus membranaceus components are known to improve DN symptoms.We aimed to establish the efficacy and safety of using Astragalus combined with RAAS inhibitors.Astragalus combined with RAAS inhibitors enhances the total effective rate of diabetic neuropathy response to treatment and reduces urinary protein excretion rate, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and HbAlc.Sensitivity analysis affirms study stability, while publication bias was detected for total effective rate, serum creatinine, and 24 h urinary protein levels.

ABSTRACT

CDCA3, a cell cycle regulator gene that plays a catalytic role in many tumors, was initially identified as a regulator of cell cycle progression, specifically facilitating the transition from the G2 phase to mitosis. However, its role in glioma remains unknown. In this study, bioinformatics analyses (TCGA, CGGA, Rembrandt) shed light on the upregulation and prognostic value of CDCA3 in gliomas. It can also be included in a column chart as a parameter predicting 3- and 5-year survival risk (C index = 0.86). According to Gene Set Enrichment Analysis and gene ontology analysis, the biological processes of CDCA3 are mainly concentrated in the biological activities related to cell cycle such as DNA replication and nuclear division. CDCA3 is closely associated with many classic glioma biomarkers (CDK4, CDK6), and inhibitors of CDK4 and CDK6 have been shown to be effective in tumor therapy. We have demonstrated that high expression of CDCA3 indicates a higher malignancy and poorer prognosis in gliomas.

ABSTRACT

The global burden of diseases and injuries poses complex and pressing challenges. This study analyzed 369 diseases and injuries attributed to 84 risk factors globally from 1990 to 2019, projecting trends to 2040. In 2019, global risks caused 35 million deaths. Non-communicable diseases were responsible for 8.2 million deaths, primarily from air pollution (5.5 million). Cardiovascular disease from air pollution had a high age-standardized disability-adjusted life year rate (1,073.40). Communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional diseases caused 1.4 million deaths, mainly due to unsafe water and sanitation. Occupational risks resulted in 184,269 transport-related deaths. Behavioral risks caused 21.6 million deaths, with dietary factors causing 6.9 million cardiovascular deaths. Diabetes linked to sugar-sweetened beverages showed significant growth (1990-2019). Metabolic risks led to 18.6 million deaths. Projections to 2040 indicated persistent challenges, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted interventions and policies to alleviate the global burden of diseases and injuries.

OBJECTIVE: The primary purpose of the study was to explore the clinical efficacy of the novel snare assisted endoscopic resection of extraluminal growing gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (gastric GISTs) using external traction, and the secondary purpose was to compare the novel snare assisted endoscopic resection of extraluminal GISTs with the standard laparoscopic procedure. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the patients who underwent novel external traction assisted endoscopic resection or laparoscopic resection for their extraluminal gastric GIST ≤5 cm in diameter. RESULTS: A total of 111 patients (27 in the endoscopic group and 84 in the laparoscopic group) were included in this study. There was no significant difference in tumor diameter and complication rate between the two groups. The overall procedure time was slightly higher in the endoscopic group compared to the laparoscopic group (P = 0.034). However, postoperative hospitalization time (P < 0.001) and postoperative fasting time (P = 0.005) were shorter in the endoscopic group compared to the laparoscopic group. CONCLUSION: Snare external traction-assisted endoscopic resection of extraluminal growing gastric GISTs is safe and effective, and it provides a new adjunctive method for endoscopic resection of GIST.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Current clinical research has reported the effectiveness and safety of venetoclax in combination with hypomethylating agents (VEN-HMA) in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). Thus, this study aimed to examine the effectiveness and safety of VEN-HMA therapy in patients with MDS and CMML and compared its short-term and long-term therapeutic effects with HMA monotherapy. Method: We analyzed data from our center, comprising 19 patients with MDS and CMML who received VEN-HMA therapy, compared to 32 patients treated with HMA monotherapy. Results: The overall response rate (ORR) in the VEN-HMA group was 73.7%, compared to 59.4% in the HMA group. The survival analysis revealed that the median overall survival (mOS) time in the VEN-HMA group was 16 months, with a median progression-free survival (mPFS) time of 9 months, both of which were longer than those observed in the HMA group (p < 0.05). Key adverse events (AEs) included grade 3-4 neutropenia (89.5% in VEN-HMA group vs. 87.5% in HMA group), grade 3-4 thrombocytopenia (73.7% vs. 71.9%), and anemia (73.7% vs. 90.6%). Infection of grade 3 or higher occurred in 63.2% of patients in the VEN-HMA group and 65.6% of patients in the HMA group. Discussion: Our study has confirmed the effectiveness and safety of the combined treatment of HMAs and venetoclax, which offers significant advantages to patients due to the relatively high and rapid response rates.

Sheep body size can directly reflect the growth rates and fattening rates of sheep and is also an important index for measuring the growth performance of meat sheep. In this study, high-resolution resequencing data from four sheep breeds (Dorper sheep, Suffolk sheep, Ouessant sheep, and Shetland sheep) were analyzed. The nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms of three candidate genes (KIAA1217, SNTA1, and LTBP1) were also genotyped in 642 healthy Ujumqin sheep using MALDI-TOFMS and the genotyping results were associated with growth traits. The results showed that different genotypes of the KIAA1217 g.24429511T>C locus had significant effects on the chest circumferences of Ujumqin sheep. The SNTA1 g.62222626C>A locus had different effects on the chest depths, shoulder widths and rump widths of Ujumqin sheep. This study showed that these two sites can be used for marker-assisted selection, which will be beneficial for future precision molecular breeding.

ABSTRACT

The immune dysregulation associated with carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) severity was investigated through single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of 5 peripheral blood samples from 3 patients with moderate and severe CRKP pneumonia. Additionally, scRNA-seq datasets from two individuals with COVID-19 were included for comparative analysis. The dynamic characterization and functional properties of each immune cell type were examined by delineating the transcriptional profiles of immune cells throughout the transition from moderate to severe conditions. Overall, most immune cells in CRKP patients exhibited a robust interferon-α response and inflammatory reaction compared to healthy controls, mirroring observations in COVID-19 patients. Furthermore, cell signatures associated with NK cells, macrophages, and monocytes were identified in CRKP progression including PTPRCAP for NK cells, C1QB for macrophages, and S100A12 for both macrophages and monocytes. In summary, this study offers a comprehensive scRNA-seq resource for illustrating the dynamic immune response patterns during CRKP progression, thereby shedding light on the associations between CRKP and COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

Two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates in gas sensing, owing to their tunable porous structure and conductivity. Nevertheless, the reported gas sensing mechanisms heavily relied on electron transfer between metal nodes and gas molecules. Normally, the strong interaction between the metal sites and target gas molecule would result poor recovery and thus bad recycling property. Herein, we propose a redox synergy strategy to overcome this issue by balancing the reactivity of metal sites and ligands. A 2D c-MOF, Zn3(HHTQ)2, was prepared for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensing, which was constructed from active ligands (hexahydroxyl-tricycloquinazoline, HHTQ) and inactive transition-metal ions (Zn2+). Substantial characterizations and theoretical calculations demonstrated that by utilizing only the redox interactions between ligands and NO2, not only high sensitivity and selectivity, but also excellent cycling stability in NO2 sensing could be achieved. In contrast, control experiments employing isostructural 2D c-MOFs with Cu/Ni metal nodes exhibited irreversible NO2 sensing. Our current work provides a new design strategy for gas sensing materials, emphasizing harnessing the redox activity of only ligands to enhance the stability of MOF sensing materials.

ABSTRACT

Cancer remains a significant challenge in the field of oncology, with the search for novel and effective treatments ongoing. Calycosin (CA), a phytoestrogen derived from traditional Chinese medicine, has garnered attention as a promising candidate. With its high targeting and low toxicity profile, CA has demonstrated medicinal potential across various diseases, including cancers, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease. Studies have revealed that CA possesses inhibitory effects against a diverse array of cancers. The underlying mechanism of action involves a reduction in tumor cell proliferation, induction of tumor cell apoptosis, and suppression of tumor cell migration and invasion. Furthermore, CA has been shown to enhance the efficacy of certain chemotherapeutic drugs, making it a potential component in treating malignant tumors. Given its high efficacy, low toxicity, and multi-targeting characteristics, CA holds considerable promise as a therapeutic agent for cancer treatment. The objective of this review is to present a synthesis of the current understanding of the antitumor mechanism of CA and its research progress.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: In this study, we identified and diagnosed a novel inherited condition called Dyschromatosis, Ichthyosis, Deafness, and Atopic Disease (DIDA) syndrome. We present a series of studies to clarify the pathogenic variants and specific mechanism. METHODS: Exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing was conducted in affected and unaffected family members. A variety of human and cell studies were performed to explore the pathogenic process of keratosis. RESULTS: Our finding indicated that DIDA syndrome was caused by compound heterozygous variants in the oxysterol-binding protein-related protein 2 (OSBPL2) gene. Furthermore, our findings revealed a direct interaction between OSBPL2 and Phosphoinositide phospholipase C-beta-3 (PLCB3), a key player in hyperkeratosis. OSBPL2 effectively inhibits the ubiquitylation of PLCB3, thereby stabilizing PLCB3. Conversely, OSBPL2 variants lead to enhanced ubiquitination and subsequent degradation of PLCB3, leading to epidermal hyperkeratosis, characterized by aberrant proliferation and delayed terminal differentiation of keratinocytes. CONCLUSIONS: Our study not only unveiled the association between OSBPL2 variants and the newly identified DIDA syndrome but also shed light on the underlying mechanism.

ABSTRACT

Topographic Rossby waves (TRWs) dominate the low-frequency variability of deep ocean currents and play a crucial role in energy exchange and material mixing. On the continental slope of the southwestern South China Sea, a deep-water mooring was deployed to observe TRWs for a period of ~ 40 days. The TRWs, with a wavelength of 109 km, account for 41.3% of the subinertial variations. A ray-tracing model was applied to investigate the propagation and energy source. The results showed that the TRWs propagated from the northeast of the mooring location and were most likely caused by the mesoscale eddy disturbances off the Vietnam coast. This study provides a new perspective on examining the impact of mesoscale eddies off Vietnam on abyssal currents.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cardiomyopathy encompasses a broad spectrum of diseases affecting myocardial tissue, characterized clinically by abnormalities in cardiac structure, heart failure, and/or arrhythmias. Clinically heterogeneous, major types include dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), restrictive cardiomyopathy (RM), ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM), among which DCM is more prevalent, while ICM exhibits higher incidence and mortality rates. Myocardial injury during cardiomyopathy progression may lead to myocardial fibrosis. Failure to intervene early and inhibit the process of myocardial fibrosis may culminate in heart failure. Cardiac fibroblasts constitute crucial cellular components determining the extent and quality of myocardial fibrosis, with various subpopulations exerting diverse roles in cardiomyopathy progression. Despite this, understanding of the cellular plasticity and transcriptional regulatory networks of cardiac fibroblasts in cardiomyopathy remains limited. Therefore, in this study, we conducted comprehensive single-cell analysis of cardiac fibroblasts in cardiomyopathy to explore differences in cellular plasticity and transcriptional regulatory networks among fibroblast subpopulations, with the aim of providing as many useful references as possible for the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of cardiomyopathy. Materials and Methods: Cells with mitochondrial gene expression comprising >20% of total expressed genes were excluded. Differential expression genes (DEGs) and stemness genes within cardiac fibroblast subpopulations were subjected to Gene Ontology (GO) analysis of biological processes (BP) and AUCell analysis. Monocle software was employed to analyze the pseudo-temporal trajectory of cardiac fibroblasts in cardiomyopathy. Additionally, the Python package SCENIC was utilized to assess enrichment of transcription factors and activity of regulators within cardiac fibroblast subpopulations in cardiomyopathy. Results: Following batch effect correction, 179,927 cells were clustered into 32 clusters, designated as T_NK cells, endothelial cells, myeloid cells, fibroblasts, pericytes, SMCs, CMs, proliferating cells, EndoCs, and EPCs. Among them, 8148 fibroblasts were further subdivided into 4 subpopulations, namely C0 THBS4+ Fibroblasts, C1 LINC01133+ Fibroblasts, C2 FGF7+ Fibroblasts, and C3 AGT + Fibroblasts. Results from GO_BP and AUCell analyses suggest that C3 AGT + Fibroblasts may be associated with immune response activation, protein transport, and myocardial contractile function, correlating with disease progression in cardiomyopathy. Transcription factor enrichment analysis indicates that FOS is the most significant TF in C3 AGT + Fibroblasts, also associated with the M1 module, possibly implicated in protein hydrolysis, intracellular DNA replication, and cell proliferation. Moreover, correlation analysis of transcriptional regulatory activity between fibroblast subpopulations reveals a more pronounced heterogeneity within C3 AGT + Fibroblasts in cardiomyopathy. Conclusion: C3 AGT + Fibroblasts exhibit increased sensitivity towards adverse outcomes in cardiomyopathy, such as myocardial fibrosis and impaired cardiac contractile function, compared to other cardiac fibroblast subpopulations. The differential cellular plasticity and transcriptional regulatory activity between C3 AGT + Fibroblasts and other subgroups offer new perspectives for targeting fibroblast subpopulation activity to treat cardiomyopathy. Additionally, stemness genes EPAS1 and MYC, along with the regulator FOS, may play roles in modulating the biological processes of cardiac fibroblasts in cardiomyopathy.

Background: The concept of subhealth, defined as a state between health and illness characterized by diminished vitality and adaptability, is emerging as a significant concern, particularly among nursing staff. In Shaanxi Province, there is a notable prevalence of subhealth conditions among nurses, influenced by various factors, including lifestyle, work environment, and psychological stress. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the level of subhealth status among nursing staff in Shaanxi hospitals, identify the primary causes and risk factors affecting their subhealth, and propose relevant countermeasures. The goal is to provide a scientific basis for developing strategies to enhance nursing staff's physical and mental well-being. Methods: A comprehensive questionnaire survey was conducted among 1068 nursing staff members from different hospitals in Shaanxi Province. The survey assessed various dimensions of subhealth, including physical, psychological, and social aspects. Data were analyzed to determine the relationships between subhealth status and factors like exercise frequency, dietary habits, smoking and alcohol consumption, occupational injuries, work situation, and stress levels. Results: Most respondents were female, aged between 21 and 40 years. The study found no significant gender-related differences in subhealth scores. Key factors affecting subhealth included physical exercise, dietary habits, occupational stress, and work conditions. The data revealed higher physical subhealth but lower psychological subhealth among nursing staff compared to regional norms. Notable relationships were observed between lifestyle choices, work-related factors, and the subhealth status of nursing staff. Conclusion: The subhealth status of nursing staff in Shaanxi hospitals is influenced by a combination of lifestyle, occupational, and psychological factors. The study underscores the need for targeted interventions focusing on lifestyle modifications, stress management, and improved work conditions to enhance the overall health status of nursing staff. This research provides valuable insights for healthcare policymakers and administrators to develop effective strategies for managing subhealth conditions among nursing professionals.

BACKGROUND: The precise role of mitochondrial carrier homolog 2 (MTCH2) in promoting malignancy in gastric mucosal cells and its involvement in gastric cancer cell metastasis have not been fully elucidated. AIM: To determine the role of MTCH2 in gastric cancer. METHODS: We collected 65 samples of poorly differentiated gastric cancer tissue and adjacent tissues, constructed MTCH2-overexpressing and MTCH2-knockdown cell models, and evaluated the proliferation, migration, and invasion of human gastric epithelial cells (GES-1) and human gastric cancer cells (AGS) cells. The mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), mitochondrial permeability transformation pore (mPTP) and ATP fluorescence probe were used to detect mitochondrial function. Mitochondrial function and ATP synthase protein levels were detected via Western blotting. RESULTS: The expression of MTCH2 and ATP2A2 in gastric cancer tissues was significantly greater than that in adjacent tissues. Overexpression of MTCH2 promoted colony formation, invasion, migration, MMP expression and ATP production in GES-1 and AGS cells while upregulating ATP2A2 expression and inhibiting cell apoptosis; knockdown of MTCH2 had the opposite effect, promoting overactivation of the mPTP and promoting apoptosis. CONCLUSION: MTCH2 can increase the malignant phenotype of GES-1 cells and promote the proliferation, invasion, and migration of gastric cancer cells by regulating mitochondrial function, providing a basis for targeted therapy for gastric cancer cells.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To explore and validate the clinical value of ultrasound (US) viscosity imaging in differentiating breast lesions by combining with BI-RADS, and then comparing the diagnostic performances with BI-RADS alone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This multicenter, prospective study enrolled participants with breast lesions from June 2021 to November 2022. A development cohort (DC) and validation cohort (VC) were established. Using histological results as reference standard, the viscosity-related parameter with the highest area under the receiver operating curve (AUC) was selected as the optimal one. Then the original BI-RADS would upgrade or not based on the value of this parameter. Finally, the results were validated in the VC and total cohorts. In the DC, VC and total cohorts, all breast lesions were divided into the large lesion, small lesion and overall groups respectively. RESULTS: A total of 639 participants (mean age, 46 years ± 14) with 639 breast lesions (372 benign and 267 malignant lesions) were finally enrolled in this study including 392 participants in the DC and 247 in the VC. In the DC, the optimal viscosity-related parameter in differentiating breast lesions was calculated to be A'-S2-Vmax, with the AUC of 0.88 (95% CI: 0.84, 0.91). Using > 9.97 Pa.s as the cutoff value, the BI-RADS was then modified. The AUC of modified BI-RADS significantly increased from 0.85 (95% CI: 0.81, 0.88) to 0.91 (95% CI: 0.87, 0.93), 0.85 (95% CI: 0.80, 0.89) to 0.90 (95% CI: 0.85, 0.93) and 0.85 (95% CI: 0.82, 0.87) to 0.90 (95% CI: 0.88, 0.92) in the DC, VC and total cohorts respectively (P < .05 for all). CONCLUSION: The quantitative viscous parameters evaluated by US viscosity imaging contribute to breast cancer diagnosis when combined with BI-RADS.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To provide lumbar spine anatomical parameters relevant to the UBE technique and explore their intraoperative application. METHODS: CT imaging data processed by Mimics for parametric measurements, including laminar abduction angle (LAA), laminar slope angle (LSA), minimum laminar height (MLH), distance between the inferior margin of the lamina and attachment of the ligamentum flavum onto the cephalad lamina (DLL), distance between the initial point and the middle of the articular process (DIA), and distance from the inferior margin of the lamina to the inferior border of the vertebral body (DLV), and were manually measured. RESULTS: LAA and DIA gradually increase from L1 to L5. At L1, the DIA is approximately the length of 2 drill bits with a diameter of 3 mm (male: 7.77 ± 1.39 mm, female: 7.22 ± 1.09 mm), while at L5, it can reach the length of 4-5 drill bits (male: 14.96 ± 2.24 mm, female: 13.67 ± 2.33 mm). MLH, DLL, and DLV reach their maximum values at the L3 and decrease toward the cranial and caudal ends. The DLL is smallest at L5 (male: 9.58 ± 1.90 mm, female: 9.38 ± 2.14 mm), equivalent to the length of 3 drill bits, while the DLL at L3 is the length of 4-5 drill bits (male: 14.17 ± 2.13 mm, female: 14.01 ± 2.07 mm). CONCLUSION: Referring to the drill diameter during surgery can mark the extent of laminotomy. The characteristics of vertebral plate angles at different lumbar levels can provide references for preoperative incision design.

ABSTRACT

The complex nature of chronic bronchitis (CB) and changing definitions have contributed to challenges in understanding its aetiology and burden. In children, CB is characterised by persistent airway inflammation often linked to bacterial infections and is therefore termed "protracted bacterial bronchitis" (PBB). Longitudinal studies suggest that CB in childhood persists into adulthood in a subgroup. It can also be associated with future chronic respiratory diseases including asthma, bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Adult CB is traditionally associated with smoking, occupational exposures, and lower socioeconomic status. The interplay between risk factors, childhood CB, adult CB, and other chronic respiratory diseases is intricate, requiring comprehensive longitudinal studies for a clearer understanding of the natural history of CB across the lifespan. Such longitudinal studies have been scarce to date given the logistic challenges of maintaining them over time. In this review, we summarise current evidence on the evolution of the definitions, pathophysiology, risk factors, and consequences of childhood and adulthood chronic bronchitis.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy, delaying or refusing to vaccinate despite the availability of vaccines, impedes the progress of achieving optimal HPV vaccine coverage. Little is known about the sources of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine hesitancy among racially/ethnically and geographically diverse communities. The purpose of this paper is to explore HPV vaccine hesitancy among rural, Slavic, and Latino communities that reside in counties with low HPV vaccine uptake rates. METHODS: Key informant interviews and focus groups were conducted with rural, Slavic, and Latino communities that reside within counties in California that have low HPV vaccine up to date rates (16-25%). Qualitative data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using inductive and deductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: A total of seven focus groups and 14 key informant interviews were conducted with 39 individuals from seven California counties. Salient themes that contributed to HPV vaccine hesitancy included the following: social media and the anti-vaccination movement; a strong belief in acquiring immunity naturally; prior vaccine experiences; and vaccine timing concerns. Participants suggested the provision of culturally appropriate, in-language, in-person easy to understand HPV vaccine education to mitigate HPV vaccine hesitancy. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings can inform future interventions to increase HPV vaccine uptake among hesitant communities.

BACKGROUND: Ershiwuwei Zhenzhu pills was originally recorded in the Tibetan medical book Si Bu Yi Dian in the 8th century AD and is now included in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China (2020). The pills can calm the nerves and open the mind as well as treat cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury, stroke, hemiplegia. However, its quality standards have not yet been established, and the therapeutic effect on cerebral ischemia by regulating the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway has not been elucidated. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: LC-MS was used to establish quality standards for Ershiwuwei Zhenzhu pills. Metabonomics, molecular docking, neuroethology, cerebral infarction ratio, pathological detection of diencephalon, cortex, and hippocampus, and molecular biology techniques were used to reveal the mechanism of the pills in regulating the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway to treat cerebral ischemia. RESULTS: The contents of 20 chemical components in Ershiwuwei Zhenzhu pills from 12 batches and 8 manufacturers was determined for the first time. Eleven differential metabolites and three metabolic pathways, namely, fructose and mannose metabolism, glycerophospholipid metabolism, and purine metabolism, were identified by metabonomics. The pills improved the neuroethology abnormalities of MCAO rats and the pathological damage in the diencephalon and decreased the ratio of cerebral infarction. It also significantly reduced the mRNA expression of AIF, Apaf-1, cleared caspase8, CytC, and P53 mRNA in the brain tissue and the protein expression of Apaf-1 and CYTC and increased the protein expression of NDRG4. CONCLUSION: In vitro quantitative analysis of the in vitro chemical components of Ershiwuwei Zhenzhu pills has laid the foundation for improving its quality control. The potential mechanism of the pills in treating cerebral ischemia may be related to the Apaf-1/CYTC/NDRG4 apoptosis pathway. This work provides guidance for clinical drug use for patients.
