ABSTRACT

Low temperatures pose a common challenge in the production of cucumbers and tomatoes, hindering plant growth and, in severe cases, leading to plant death. In our investigation, we observed a substantial improvement in the growth of cucumber and tomato seedlings through the application of corn steep liquor (CSL), myo-inositol (MI), and their combinations. When subjected to low-temperature stress, these treatments resulted in heightened levels of photosynthetic pigments, thereby fostering enhanced photosynthesis in both tomato and cucumber plants. Furthermore, it contributed to a decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and electrolyte leakage (REP). The effectiveness of the treatment was further validated through the analysis of key gene expressions (CBF1, COR, MIOX4, and MIPS1) in cucumber. Particularly, noteworthy positive outcomes were noted in the treatment involving 0.6 mL L-1 CSL combined with 72 mg L-1 MI. This study provides valuable technical insights into leveraging the synergistic effects of inositol and maize leachate to promote early crop growth and bolster resistance to low temperatures.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we propose a novel federated learning (FL) framework for wireless Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) based healthcare systems, where multiple mobile clients and one edge server (ES) collaboratively train a shared model on long-tail data through wireless channels. However, the presence of long-tailed data in this system may introduce a biased global model which fails to handle the tail classes. Additionally, the occurrence of severe fading in wireless channels may prevent mobile clients from successfully uploading local models to the ES, thereby excluding them from participating in the model aggregation. These situations adversely affect the performance of FL. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel scoring aided FL framework that uses a scoring-based sampling strategy to select mobile clients with more tailed data and better transmission conditions to upload their local models. Specifically, we leverage the logits to explore the data distribution among local clients and propose a logits based scoring client selection method to alleviate the impact of long-tailed data. Moreover, we address the impact of severe fading by incorporating the channel state information (CSI) and data rate of clients into the logits based scoring and proposing a novel logits and model upload rate based client selection method. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework. In particular, compared to the conventional FedAvg, the proposed framework can achieve accuracy gains ranging from 4.44% to 28.36% on the CIFAR-10-LT dataset with an imbalance factor (IF) of 50.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia causes hypoxia or inadequate perfusion to the organs of newborns, leading to metabolism dysfunctions including blood glucose disorders. METHODS: Neonates with and without birth asphyxia were retrospectively recruited from 53 hospitals in Hubei Province from January 1 to December 31, 2018. In summary, 875, 1139, and 180 cases in the control group, the mild asphyxia group, and the severe asphyxia group were recruited, respectively. Neonatal blood glucose values at postnatal 1, 2, 6, and 12 h (time error within 0.5 h was allowed) were gathered from the medical records. RESULTS: The incidence rates of hyperglycemia in the control group, the mild asphyxia group and the severe asphyxia group were 2.97%, 7.90%, and 23.33%, respectively (p < 0.001). Additionally, the incidence rates of hypoglycemia in the three groups above were 3.66%, 4.13%, and 7.78%, respectively (p = 0.042). The blood glucose values of neonates with hypoglycemia in the asphyxia group were lower than in the control group (p = 0.003). Furthermore, the blood glucose values of neonates with hyperglycemia were highest in the severe asphyxia group (p < 0.001). There were 778 and 117 cases with blood glucose records at four predefined time points in the mild and severe asphyxia group, respectively. The incidence of blood glucose disorders in the mild asphyxia group significantly decreased from postnatal 6 h (p<0.05). However, we found no obvious changes of the incidence of glucose disorders within postnatal 12 h in the severe asphyxia group (p = 0.589). CONCLUSION: Birth asphyxia is likely to cause neonatal blood glucose disorders, both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, during the early postnatal life. The neonates with severe asphyxia have higher incidence, worse severity and longer duration of blood glucose disorders than neonates with mild asphyxia.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of glucose metabolism disorders on the short-term prognosis in neonates with asphyxia. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical data of the neonates with asphyxia who were admitted to 52 hospitals in Hubei Province of China from January to December, 2018 and had blood glucose data within 12 hours after birth. Their blood glucose data at 1, 2, 6, and 12 hours after birth (with an allowable time error of 0.5 hour) were recorded. According to the presence or absence of brain injury and/or death during hospitalization, the neonates were divided into a poor prognosis group with 693 neonates and a good prognosis group with 779 neonates. The two groups were compared in the incidence of glucose metabolism disorders within 12 hours after birth and short-term prognosis. RESULTS: Compared with the good prognosis group, the poor prognosis group had a significantly higher proportion of neonates from secondary hospitals (48.5% vs 42.6%, P<0.05) or with severe asphyxia (19.8% vs 8.1%, P<0.05) or hypothermia therapy (4.8% vs 1.5%, P<0.05), as well as a significantly higher incidence rate of disorder of glucose metabolism (18.8% vs 12.5%, P<0.05). Compared with the good prognosis group, the poor prognosis group had a significantly higher incidence rate of disorder of glucose metabolism at 1, 2, and 6 hours after birth (P<0.05). The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that recurrent hyperglycemia (adjusted odds ratio=2.380, 95% confidence interval: 1.275-4.442, P<0.05) was an independent risk factor for poor prognosis in neonates with asphyxia. CONCLUSIONS: Recurrent hyperglycemia in neonates with asphyxia may suggest poor short-term prognosis, and it is necessary to strengthen the early monitoring and management of the nervous system in such neonates.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of nursing intervention strategies based on the Orem self-care theory on the recovery of gastrointestinal function in patients after colon cancer surgery. METHODS: In this prospective study, a total of 115 patients with colon cancer who had radical resection of the colon cancer tissue were selected as the research subjects and randomized into two groups: an Orem group (59 cases), which was given nursing based on the Orem self-care model and a control group (56 cases), which was given regular nursing. The postoperative recovery of the two groups was compared. RESULTS: After the intervention, the time to first getting out of bed, gastric tube removal, first postoperative flatus, first fluid food intake and general food intake were significantly earlier than those of the control group. Time of intestinal peristalsis and the average length of hospital stay of the Orem group were much shorter than those of the control group (all P<0.001). The cost of nutrient supply of the Orem group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.001), and the postoperative pain and incidence of complications of patients in the Orem group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). After 3 months of follow-up, the scores of positive attitude, intimacy and total score of hope in the hope level of the patients in the Orem group were significantly higher than those in the control group (all P<0.01). There was no significant difference in the positive action scores (P>0.05). Besides, the scores of the Orem group in all dimensions of the quality of life were significantly higher than those of the control group (all P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Nursing intervention based on the Orem self-care theory can promote the recovery of patients with colon cancer after surgery, speed up the recovery of their gastrointestinal function, and ultimately improve their level of hope and quality of life. Therefore, it is worthy of promotion in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The newly identified 2019-nCoV, which appears to have originated in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei province in central China, is spreading rapidly nationwide. A number of cases of neonates born to mothers with 2019-nCoV pneumonia have been recorded. However, the clinical features of these cases have not been reported, and there is no sufficient evidence for the proper prevention and control of 2019-nCoV infections in neonates. METHODS: The clinical features and outcomes of 10 neonates (including 2 twins) born to 9 mothers with confirmed 2019-nCoV infection in 5 hospitals from January 20 to February 5, 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Among these 9 pregnant women with confirmed 2019-nCoV infection, onset of clinical symptoms occurred before delivery in 4 cases, on the day of delivery in 2 cases, and after delivery in 3 cases. In most cases, fever and a cough were the first symptoms experienced, and 1 patient also had diarrhea. Of the newborns born to these mothers, 8 were male and 2 were female; 4 were full-term infants and 6 were born premature; 2 were small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants and 1 was a large-for-gestational-age (LGA) infant; there were 8 singletons and 2 twins. Of the neonates, 6 had a Pediatric Critical Illness Score (PCIS) score of less than 90. Clinically, the first symptom in the neonates was shortness of breath (n=6), but other initial symptoms such as fever (n=2), thrombocytopenia accompanied by abnormal liver function (n=2), rapid heart rate (n=1), vomiting (n=1), and pneumothorax (n=1) were observed. Up to now, 5 neonates have been cured and discharged, 1 has died, and 4 neonates remain in hospital in a stable condition. Pharyngeal swab specimens were collected from 9 of the 10 neonates 1 to 9 days after birth for nucleic acid amplification tests for 2019-nCoV, all of which showed negative results. CONCLUSIONS: Perinatal 2019-nCoV infection may have adverse effects on newborns, causing problems such as fetal distress, premature labor, respiratory distress, thrombocytopenia accompanied by abnormal liver function, and even death. However, vertical transmission of 2019-nCoV is yet to be confirmed.

ABSTRACT

A waveform synthesis technique is introduced and applied to the femtosecond pulse excitation of plasmonic nanoantennas for temporal and spatial energy concentration control. The waveform synthesis process is based on phase and polarization shaping and an understanding of the electromagnetic response of the nanostructure. Linear and radial nano-dipole arrays are analyzed before the log-periodic toothed nanoantenna is investigated as a nanostructure capable of combining the benefits of the nano-dipole arrays. The consistent superiority of the log-periodic toothed nanoantenna is established by comparing its electromagnetic response to that of the radial nano-dipole array using a variety of synthesized excitation waveforms.

ABSTRACT

Transformation optics (TO) offers a geometrical approach in designing optical components of any shapes. Although it has been proven to be a versatile and robust mathematical tool, TO has, however, limited control over electromagnetic (EM) field polarization in the process of coordinate transformation. Such a technique can be extended to a so-called "Field transformation (FT)" which provides direct control over the impedance and polarization signature of an arbitrary object. In this work, we demonstrate a FT application by designing and manufacturing a novel waveplate, which defies the fundamental limit of bandwidth and incident angles and has the ability of converting between TE (transverse electric) and TM (transverse magnetic) as well as LCP (left-handed circular polarization) and RCP (right-handed circular polarization). Such a waveplate can also be applied to different operating modes for both transmitted and reflected waves by adjusting its thickness and adding an optional metallic ground plane. The proposed design approach presents a remarkable degree of advance for designing future devices with arbitrary polarization controls, artificial waveguides or antenna substrates and polarization-enabled resonators with angle-insensitive functionalities. Our approach has far reaching implications applicable from radio to optical frequencies.

ABSTRACT

In the last decade, a technique termed transformation optics has been developed for the design of novel electromagnetic devices. This method defines the exact modification of magnetic and dielectric constants required, so that the electromagnetic behaviour remains invariant after a transformation to a new coordinate system. Despite the apparently infinite possibilities that this mathematical tool introduces, one restriction has repeatedly recurred since its conception: limited frequency bands of operation. Here we circumvent this problem with the proposal of a full dielectric implementation of a transformed planar hyperbolic lens which retains the same focusing properties of an original curved lens. The redesigned lens demonstrates operation with high directivity and low side lobe levels for an ultra-wide band of frequencies, spanning over three octaves. The methodology proposed in this paper can be applied to revolutionise the design of many electromagnetic devices overcoming bandwidth limitations.
