ABSTRACT

The expression of ß-amyloid peptides (Aß), a pathological indicator of Alzheimer's disease (AD), was reported to be inapparent in the early stage of AD. While peroxynitrite (ONOO-) is produced excessively and emerges earlier than Aß plaques in the progression of AD, it is thus significant to sensitively detect ONOO- for early diagnosis of AD and its pathological research. Herein, we unveiled an integrated sensor for monitoring ONOO-, which consisted of a commercially available field-effect transistor (FET) and a high-performance multi-engineered graphene extended-gate (EG) electrode. In the configuration of the presented EG electrode, laser-induced graphene (LIG) intercalated with MnO2 nanoparticles (MnO2/LIG) can improve the electrical properties of LIG and the sensitivity of the sensor, and graphene oxide (GO)-MnO2/Hemin nanozyme with ONOO- isomerase activity can selectively trigger the isomerization of ONOO- to NO3-. With this synergistic effect, our EG-FET sensor can respond to the ONOO- with high sensitivity and selectivity. Moreover, taking advantage of our EG-FET sensor, we modularly assembled a portable sensing platform for wireless tracking ONOO- levels in the brain tissue of AD transgenic mice at earlier stages before massive Aß plaques appeared, and we systematically explored the complex role of ONOO- in the occurrence and development of AD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In recent years, HIV infection in students has been an ongoing concern worldwide. A large number of articles have been published; however, statistical analysis of the data presented in these publications is lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to detect and analyze emerging trends and collaborative networks in research on HIV/AIDS among students. METHODS: Research publications on HIV/AIDS among students from 1985 to 2022 were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection. A topic search was used for this study, and articles in English were included. CiteSpace was used to generate visual networks of countries/regions, institutions, references, and keywords. Citation analysis was used to discover milestones in the field and trace the roots of the knowledge base. Keyword analysis was used to detect research hotspots and predict future trends. RESULTS: A total of 2726 publications met the inclusion criteria. Over the past 38 years, the number of publications annually has been on the rise overall. The United States had the highest number of publications (n=1303) and the highest centrality (0.91). The University of California system was the core institution. The main target population of studies on HIV/AIDS among students were medical and university students. These studies focused on students' knowledge, attitudes, risk behaviors, and education about HIV/AIDS. The recent bursting keywords (gay, sexual health, adherence, barriers, mental health, HIV testing, stigma, and antiretroviral therapy) revealed research trends and public interest on this topic. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified countries/regions and institutions contributing to the research area of HIV/AIDS among students and revealed research hotspots and emerging trends. The field of research on HIV/AIDS among students was growing rapidly. The United States was at the center, and the University of California system was the core institution. However, academic collaboration should be strengthened. Future research may focus on exploring gay students, sexual health, adherence, barriers, mental health, HIV testing, stigma, and antiretroviral therapy.

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes and experimentally validates a novel concentric circle (CC) model for indoor WiFi sensing. By setting the transmitter and receiver together, the perception model becomes concentric circles with equal spacing, eliminating the blind zone and unequal radial sensitivity problems of the Fresnel zone (FZ) model. Then a human respiratory monitoring system is developed based on this model, which executes the following steps: (1) Principal component analysis (PCA) is applied to the channel state information ratio (CSIR) as a preprocessing to extract the components related to human activities. (2) Human presence and respiratory signal detection are adopted to improve monitoring accuracy. (3) The Doppler respiratory frequency is extracted to calculate the respiratory rate. Experimental results show that the CC model achieves high accuracy in velocity measurement with an error of less than 0.4 cm/s. The respiration monitoring system can accurately monitor human respiration with an error of less than 0.7 bpm within 6 m.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a wideband low-noise amplifier (LNA) front-end with noise and distortion cancellation for high-frequency ultrasound transducers. The LNA employs a resistive shunt-feedback structure with a feedforward noise-canceling technique to accomplish both wideband impedance matching and low noise performance. A complementary CMOS topology was also developed to cancel out the second-order harmonic distortion and enhance the amplifier linearity. A high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) and photoacoustic (PA) imaging front-end, including the proposed LNA and a variable gain amplifier (VGA), was designed and fabricated in a 180 nm CMOS process. At 80 MHz, the front-end achieves an input-referred noise density of 1.36 nV/sqrt (Hz), an input return loss (S11) of better than -16 dB, a voltage gain of 37 dB, and a total harmonic distortion (THD) of -55 dBc while dissipating a power of 37 mW, leading to a noise efficiency factor (NEF) of 2.66.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgery attracts more and more attention because of the advantages of minimal trauma, less bleeding and pain and low complication rate. However, minimally invasive surgery for beating hearts is still a challenge. Our goal is to develop a soft robot surgical system for single-port minimally invasive surgery on a beating heart. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The soft robot described in this paper is inspired by the octopus arm. Although the octopus arm is soft and has more degrees of freedom (DOFs), it can be controlled flexibly. The soft robot is driven by cables that are embedded into the soft robot manipulator and can control the direction of the end and middle of the soft robot manipulator. The forward, backward and rotation movement of the soft robot is driven by a propulsion plant. The soft robot can move freely by properly controlling the cables and the propulsion plant. The soft surgical robot system can perform different thoracic operations by changing surgical instruments. To evaluate the flexibility, controllability and reachability of the designed soft robot surgical system, some testing experiments have been conducted in vivo on a swine. RESULTS: Through the subxiphoid, the soft robot manipulator could enter into the thoracic cavity and pericardial cavity smoothly and perform some operations such as biopsy, ligation and ablation. The operations were performed successfully and did not cause any damage to the surrounding soft tissues. From the experiments, the flexibility, controllability and reachability of the soft robot surgical system have been verified. Also, it has been shown that this system can be used in the thoracic and pericardial cavity for different operations. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with other endoscopy robots, the soft robot surgical system is safer, has more DOFs and is more flexible for control. When performing operations in a beating heart, this system maybe more suitable than traditional endoscopy robots.
