ABSTRACT

In this paper, a heart-shaped nanocomposite (MXenen@Cu-MOF, MC) has been prepared by hydrothermal method. This material can effectively prevent the accumulation of MXene, improve the material's electrical conductivity and antibacterial properties. In addition, it is loaded into Polyvinyl alcohol/Poly-dopamine hydrogel wound dressings (PPMC), which can effectively destroy bacterial biofilms and provide a new pathway for internal electrical currents, helping to repair internal electric fields and promote wound healing. Through the concentration gradient experiments of hydrogel such as antibacterial, conductive, hemolysis and cell migration, we believe that the addition of MC can improve the basic properties of hydrogel. Among them, PPMC0.2 is the hydrogel with the best performance under the premise of meeting bio-compatibility. Its resistance, between 500 and 1000 Ω, is lower than the skin resistance at the wound site and provides the basis for the passage of current through the body. In addition, the cell mobility (24h) of PPMC0.2 reached 58%, and the wound healing rate (6day) was 81.84%, which was much higher than that of other experimental groups. The experimental results proved that PPMC hydrogel can promote wound healing, and this study also provided a new therapeutic idea for chronic wound healing.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: The aims of this study are to investigate the etiology, microbiological spectrum, and risk factors associated with visual outcomes of fungal endophthalmitis (FE) in a tertiary eye specialty hospital in Shanghai, China. METHODS: This was a retrospective, single-center case series. The clinical characteristics, etiology, microbiological spectrum, and management, as well as the visual outcomes, were analyzed. Logistic regression was used to analyze the factors related to visual outcomes. RESULTS: This study involved 102 eyes of 92 patients with FE, including 63 males (66.3%). The mean age was 44.4 ± 19.8 years. The most common etiology of FE was trauma (56.5%). The predominant fungal species isolated were Aspergillus spp. (31/93, 33.3%). Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and intravitreal antifungal agents was performed initially in 86 (84.3%) and 83 (81.4%) eyes, respectively. Only 35 (34.3%) eyes achieved final best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/400 or better. Ten (9.8%) eyes had a final BCVA of light perception or worse, and five (4.9%) had to be enucleated. The factors determining better visual outcomes included initial visual acuity better than finger-counting (FC) (odds ratio (OR) 5.811, p = 0.036), the absence of corneal infiltrate (OR 10.131, p = 0.002), and Candida species infection (OR 6.325, p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: Early diagnosis of FE and a timely vitrectomy, combined with an intravitreal injection of an antifungal drug, can mitigate the devastating results of intraocular fungal infection. Not being infected by Aspergillus spp., an initial BCVA that was no worse than FC, and the absence of corneal involvement were related to better visual prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Electrical stimulation modulates cell behavior and influences bacterial activity, so highly conductive, antimicrobial hydrogels are suitable for promoting wound healing. In this study, highly conductive and antimicrobial Ti3C2Tx (MXene) hydrogels composed of chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) and AgCu- H2PYDC MOF were developed. In PVACS/MOF/MXene (PCMM) hydrogels, the MXene layer acts as an electrical conductor. The electrical conductivity is 0.61 ± 0.01 S·cm-1. PCMM hydrogels modulate cell behavior and provide ES antimicrobial capacity under ES at 1 V. The metal ions of MOF form coordination with chitosan molecules and increase the cross-linking density between chitosan molecules, thus improving the mechanical properties of the hydrogel (tensile strength 0.088 ± 0.04 MPa, elongation at break 233 ± 11 %). The PCMM gels had good biocompatibility. The PCMM hydrogels achieved 100 % antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus for 12 h. 1 V electrical stimulation of PCMM hydrogel accelerated the wound healing process in mice by promoting cell migration and neovascularization, achieving 97 ± 0.4 % wound healing on day 14. The hydrogel dressing PCMM-0.1 with MOF addition of 0.1 % had the best wound healing promoting effect and which is a promising dressing for promoting wound healing and is a therapeutic strategy worth developing.

ABSTRACT

Lactobacillus species have been shown to alleviate gut inflammation and oxidative stress. However, the effect of different lactobacilli components on gut inflammation has not been well studied. This study aims to identify the differences in the effect and mechanisms of different forms and components of Limosilactobacillus mucosae (LM) treatment in the alleviation of gut inflammation using a colitis mouse model that is induced by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS). Seventy-two C57BL/6 mice were divided into six groups: control, DSS, live LM+DSS (LM+DSS), heat-killed LM+DSS (HKLM+DSS), LM cell-free supernatant + DSS (LMCS+DSS), and MRS medium + DSS (MRS+DSS). The mice were treated with different forms and components of LM for two weeks before DSS treatment. After that, the mice were sacrificed for an assessment of their levels of inflammatory cytokines, serotonin (5-HT) receptors (HTRs), and tryptophan metabolites. The results showed that, compared to other treatments, LMCS was more effective (p < 0.05) in the alleviation of DSS-induced body weight loss and led to an increase in the disease activity index score. All three forms and components of LM increased (p < 0.05) the levels of indole-3-acetic acid but reduced (p < 0.05) the levels of 5-HT in the colon. HKLM or LMCS reduced (p < 0.05) the percentages of CD3+CD8+ cytotoxic T cells but increased (p < 0.05) the percentages of CD3+CD4+ T helper cells in the spleen. LM or HKLM increased (p < 0.05) abundances of CD4+Foxp3+ regulatory T cells in the spleen. The LM and LMCS treatments reduced (p < 0.05) the expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines Il6 and Il17a. The mice in the HKLM+DSS group had higher (p < 0.05) mRNA levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine Il10, the cell differentiation and proliferation markers Lgr5 and Ki67, the 5-HT degradation enzyme Maoa, and HTRs (Htr1a, Htr2a, and Htr2b) in the colon. All three forms and components of LM reduced the phosphorylation of STAT3. The above findings can help to optimize the functionality of probiotics and develop new dietary strategies that aid in the maintenance of a healthy gut.

BACKGROUND: The safety information of brolucizumab primarily comes from clinical trials experience. This study aimed to explore the ocular and systemic adverse events (AEs) associated with brolucizumab among real-world patients through data mining the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database. METHODS: AE reports submitted to the FAERS database between October 2019 and March 2023 were extracted. The reporting odds ratio was used to evaluate AE signals associated with brolucizumab. RESULTS: There were 4,380,839 AE reports extracted from the FAERS database, and 3,313 of which were with brolucizumab as primary suspected. A total of 150 ocular AE signals were identified. Ninety-nine were known ocular AEs listed in brolucizumab' label, primarily including vision-related AEs, intraocular infections, and retinal disorders. Fifty-one were unexpected ocular AE signals, including keratic precipitates, retinal perivascular sheathing, dry eye, glaucoma, etc. Meanwhile, several serious systemic AE signals, including arterial thromboembolic events and rhinorrhea, were also identified. CONCLUSIONS: Several unexpected ocular and systemic AE signals associated with brolucizumab were identified through data mining of the FAERS database.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aimed to elucidate the etiologies, microbiological profiles, antibiotic susceptibilities of bacteria and outcomes of patients with auricular perichondritis. Patients and Methods: This was a single-center retrospective study. Inpatients diagnosed with auricular perichondritis at a university teaching hospital in eastern China between January 2013 and December 2022 were included in this study. Results: A total of 127 patients were enrolled, with an average age of 50.6 ± 16.9 years. In addition to cases in which the etiology remained undetermined in 37% of the patients, postoperative infection emerged as the predominant cause (37.8%), followed by trauma (18.1%). Among the 61 cultured isolates, 21.3% were gram-positive bacteria, 55.7% were gram-negative bacteria, and 23.0% were fungal isolates. The most frequent isolate was Pseudomonas aeruginosa (30/61, 49.2%). Notably, the incidence of fungal infections was markedly higher among postoperative patients than among post-traumatic patients (41.7% vs 7.1%, p = 0.03). The proportions of gram-negative bacteria (60.0% vs 50.0%) and fungal isolates (28.6% vs 15.4%) exhibited an increasing trend during the period of 2018-2022, as compared to the previous period of 2013-2017. The bacterial isolates exhibited high susceptibility to vancomycin (100%), amikacin (100%), cefepime (94.6%), and ceftazidime (90.9%). In contrast, overall susceptibility to fluoroquinolones was relatively low (65.2-67.4%), demonstrating a declining trend in the susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Notably, 78.7% of the patients received an initial treatment regimen covering Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Within 30 days of discharge, 8.5% (6/71) experienced an infection recurrence. Conclusion: Auricular perichondritis predominantly originates from iatrogenic (postoperative) infections. Antibiotic therapy covering Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a sensible and appropriate empirical treatment in the majority of patients with auricular perichondritis. However, increased resistance to fluoroquinolones has become a notable concern, suggesting the need to seek new, more aggressive strategies.

BACKGROUND: Different clinical trials for recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma have studied different combinations of immuno-oncology in first-line treatment, but the optimal choice has not been determined. OBJECTIVE: To systematically examine and compare the efficacy and safety of different immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) combined with chemotherapy as first-line treatment for recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma. METHODS: Several electronic databases were systematically searched up to February 2023. Articles meeting the inclusion criteria were included. RESULTS: Three RCTs were eligible in the study. Compared with placebo plus gemcitabine-cisplatin (GP), toripalimab plus GP (HR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.37-0.95) was significantly associated with a better OS. Tislelizumab plus GP generated best progression-free survival (PFS) benefit (HR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.37-0.67), greatest improvement in 1-year PFS rate (RR = 3.00, 95% CI: 1.84-5.22), and objective response rate (ORR) (RR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.04-1.53) over the placebo plus GP. Furthermore, tislelizumab plus GP appeared to be safer than toripalimab plus GP and camrelizumab plus GP in terms of adverse events (AEs)-grade ≥3, treatment-related AEs (TRAEs)-grade ≥3, serious AEs (SAEs), treatment-related SAEs (TRSAEs), and AEs leading to discontinuation of treatment. CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE: In recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma, programmed death 1 (PD-1) inhibitors plus GP as first-line treatment have better survival outcomes than placebo plus GP with comparable toxicity. Toripalimab plus GP shows the best OS benefit over placebo plus GP, while tislelizumab plus GP generates the best PFS, 1-year PFS rate, ORR, and safety. Tislelizumab plus GP could be the best choice among the ICIs combined with chemotherapy regimens as first-line treatment in recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

Acute post-cataract surgery endophthalmitis (APSE) is a serious vision-threatening complication of cataract surgery. Analysis of the management and prognosis in cases of APSE may provide better guidance for future treatment. Fifty-six patients (56 eyes) diagnosed with APSE between 2013 and 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. The incidence of APSE rate was 0.020% (95% CI: 0.011-0.029%). Intraocular cultures were positive in 18 (32.1%) cases, with 21 organisms isolated. Coagulase-negative staphylococci was the predominant isolate (12/21; 57.1%). The time from surgery to the onset of endophthalmitis was 7 days (interquartile range: 3-16) in patients with good best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (≥20/70) and 3 days (interquartile range: 1-8) in those with poor BCVA (<20/70). Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed that initial BCVA (logMAR) (p < 0.001), time from onset to initial intravitreal antibiotics (IVAs) (p < 0.001), and positive culture of highly virulent pathogens (p = 0.018) displayed significantly positive associations with the final BCVA (logMAR). Adjunctive use of intravitreal corticosteroids and systemic antibiotics were unrelated to a favorable final BCVA. In conclusion, the severity of the visual condition at baseline, as well as delayed treatment, are risk factors for poor visual outcomes in APSE.

ABSTRACT

Silver-containing wound dressings have shown attractive advantages in the treatment of wound infection due to their excellent antibacterial activity. However, the introduction of silver ions or AgNPs directly into the wound can cause deposition in the body as particles. Here, with the aim of designing low-silver wound dressings, a bimetallic-MOF antibacterial material called AgCu@MOF was developed using 3, 5-pyridine dicarboxylic acid as the ligand and Ag+ and Cu2+ as metal ion sites. PCbM (PVA/chitosan/AgCu@MOF) hydrogel was successfully constructed in PVA/chitosan wound dressing loaded with AgCu@MOF. The active sites on the surface of AgCu@MOF increased the lipophilicity to bacteria and caused the bacterial membrane to undergo lipid peroxidation, which resulted in the strong bactericidal properties of AgCu@MOF, and the antimicrobial activity of the dressing PCbM was as high as 99.9%. The chelation of silver ions in AgCu@MOF with chitosan occupied the surface functional groups of chitosan and reduced the crosslinking density of chitosan. PCbM changes the hydrogel crosslinking network, thus improving the water retention and water permeability of PCbM hydrogel so that the hydrogel has the function of binding wet tissue. As a wound adhesive, PCbM hydrogel reduces the amount of wound bleeding and has good biocompatibility. PCbM hydrogel-treated mice achieved 96% wound recovery on day 14. The strong antibacterial, tissue adhesion, and hemostatic ability of PCbM make it a potential wound dressing.

Background: Neovascularity visualization in breast nodules is challenging due to the limitations of conventional Doppler imaging methods. This study aims to assess the performance of superb microvascular imaging (SMI) in evaluating the microvascularity of breast nodules (diameter ≤2 cm). The comparison of performances of SMI with color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) and power Doppler imaging (PDI) was made by using a three-factor scoring system of vascularity. This study also investigated the common features of microvascularity in small malignant nodules on SMI for early differentiating from benign nodules. Methods: Ninety-one female patients (with 125 breast nodules) were enrolled in this retrospective study. All the breast nodules were examined by grayscale ultrasonography (US), CDFI, PDI, and SMI. The number, morphologic features, and distribution of blood vessels were scored to evaluate the nodular vascularity in light of the three-factor scoring system. The diagnostic value of SMI for microvascularity in breast nodules was analyzed and compared with CDFI and PDI. Results: Histological analysis showed 53 malignant and 72 benign nodules. The vascularity grades detected by SMI were significantly different from those of CDFI and PDI (P<0.05). SMI detected 47 grade-IV nodules of the total 125 nodules (37.6%), which was more than those detected by CDFI (10.4%, 13/125) and PDI (12.8%, 16/125), while more grade-I nodules were detected by CDFI (42.4%, 53/125) and PDI (36.8%, 46/125) compared with SMI (21.6%, 27/125). Differences in the vessel number, morphologic features, and distribution between benign and malignant breast nodules were significant on SMI (P<0.05). The vessel number ≥6, penetrating vessels, and a mixed distribution of vessels in peripheral and central nodular tissues were the common features of microvascularity in the grade-IV malignant nodules on SMI, whereas the blood vessels in the benign nodules were straight and branching and peripherally distributed. Conclusions: In comparison with CDFI and PDI, SMI enhances microvascularity detection, depicts the microvascular architecture in breast nodules and has potential in the differential diagnosis of malignant nodules from benign nodules.

ABSTRACT

During the last two decades, two-dimensional (2D) materials have been the focus of condensed matter physics and material science due to their promising fundamental properties and (opto-)electronic applications. However, high-κ 2D dielectrics that can be integrated within 2D devices are often missing. Here, we propose nonlayered oxide monolayers with calculated exfoliation energy as low as 0.39 J/m2 stemming from the ionic feature of the metal oxide bonds. We predict 51 easily or potentially exfoliable oxide monolayers, including metals and insulators/semiconductors, with intriguing physical properties such as ultra-high κ values, negative Poisson's ratios and large valley spin splitting. Among them, the most promising dielectric, GeO2, exhibits an auxetic effect, a κ value of 99, and forms type-I heterostructures with MoSe2 and HfSe2, with a band offset of ~1 eV. Our study opens the way for designing nonlayered 2D oxides, offering a platform for studying the rich physics in ultra-thin oxides and their potential applications in future information technologies.

ABSTRACT

Many textbook physical effects in crystals are enabled by some specific symmetries. In contrast to such 'apparent effects', 'hidden effect X' refers to the general condition where the nominal global system symmetry would disallow the effect X, whereas the symmetry of local sectors within the crystal would enable effect X. Known examples include the hidden Rashba and/or hidden Dresselhaus spin polarization that require spin-orbit coupling, but unlike their apparent counterparts are demonstrated to exist in non-magnetic systems even in inversion-symmetric crystals. Here, we discuss hidden spin polarization effect in collinear antiferromagnets without the requirement for spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Symmetry analysis suggests that antiferromagnets hosting such effect can be classified into six types depending on the global vs local symmetry. We identify which of the possible collinear antiferromagnetic compounds will harbor such hidden polarization and validate these symmetry enabling predictions with first-principles density functional calculations for several representative compounds. This will boost the theoretical and experimental efforts in finding new spin-polarized materials.

Purpose: Melanomas are highly malignant and rapidly develop drug resistance due to dysregulated apoptosis. Therefore, pro-apoptotic agents could be effective for the management of melanoma. Hydrogen sulfide is ubiquitous in the body, and exogenous hydrogen sulfide has been reported to show inhibitory and pro-apoptotic effects on cancer cells. However, whether high concentrations of exogenous hydrogen sulfide have pro-apoptotic effects on melanoma and its mechanisms remain unknown. Hence, this study aimed to explore the pro-apoptotic effects and mechanisms of exogenous hydrogen sulfide on the A375 melanoma cell line treated with a hydrogen sulfide donor (NaHS). Methods: The cell proliferation test, flow cytometric analysis, Hoechst 33258 staining, and Western blotting of B-cell lymphoma 2 and cleaved caspase-3 were used to explore the pro-apoptotic effects of hydrogen sulfide on A375 cells. The transcriptional profile of NaHS-treated A375 cells was further explored via high-throughput sequencing. Western blotting of phosphorylated inositol-requiring enzyme 1α (p-IRE1α), phosphorylated protein kinase R-like ER kinase (p-PERK), phosphorylated eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α (p-eIF2α), C/EBP homologous protein, glucose-regulating protein 78, IRE1α, PERK, and eIF2α was performed to verify the changes in the transcriptional profile. Results: NaHS inhibited A375 melanoma cell proliferation and induced apoptosis. The endoplasmic reticulum stress unfolded protein response and apoptosis-associated gene expression was upregulated in NaHS-treated A375 melanoma cells. The overactivation of the unfolded protein response and increase in endoplasmic reticulum stress was verified at the protein level. Conclusion: Treatment with NaHS increased endoplasmic reticulum stress, which triggered the overactivation of the unfolded protein response and ultimately lead to melanoma cell apoptosis. The pro-apoptotic effect of NaHS suggests that it can be explored as a potential therapeutic agent in melanoma.

PURPOSE: To perform a systematic evaluation of the efficacy and safety of loteprednol etabonate (LE) 0.5% versus fluorometholone (FML) 0.1% for treating patients after corneal refractive surgery with the aim of providing an evidence-based rationale for clinical drug selection. METHODS: Electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, WanFang, and CNKI) were searched (from inception to December 2021) for comparative clinical studies that evaluated LE versus FML treatment for post-corneal refractive surgery patients. Meta-analysis was performed using the RevMan 5.3 software. The pooled risk ratio (RR) and weighted mean difference (WMD) with corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. RESULTS: Nine studies with a total sample size of 2677 eyes were included in this analysis. FML 0.1% and LE 0.5% produced a similar incidence of corneal haze within 6 months after surgery (P = 0.13 at 1 month, P = 0.66 at 3 months, and P = 0.12 at 6 months). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of the mean logMAR postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity (WMD: - 0.00; 95% CI: - 0.01 to 0.00; P = 0.29) and spherical equivalent (WMD: 0.01; 95% CI: - 0.01 to 0.03; P = 0.35). LE 0.5% appears to have a higher tendency to reduce the incidence of ocular hypertension compared FML 0.1%, but there was no statistical significance (RR: 0.63; 95% CI: 0.27 to 1.50; P = 0.30). CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis demonstrated that LE 0.5% and FML 0.1% had comparable efficacy in preventing corneal haze and corticosteroid-induced ocular hypertension, with no difference in visual acuity in patients after corneal refractive surgery.

ABSTRACT

Due to the severe lateral lobe artifact by coherent plane-wave compounding (CPWC) and the low signal-to-noise ratio of radiofrequency (RF) data collected from the plane wave, the adaptive beamforming methods based on focused wave imaging (FWI) are improper to be directly applied to CPWC. To obtain a high-quality image with high resolution and contrast, this study combined the threshold phase coherence factor (THR-PCF) with the reconstructed covariance matrix minimum variance (RCM-MV) and then proposed a novel CPWC-based adaptive beamforming algorithm, THR-PCF + RCM-MV. The simulation, phantom, and in-vivo experiments were performed to investigate the performance of the proposed methods in comparison with the CPWC and the classical adaptive methods including the minimum variance (MV), generalized coherence factor (GCF) and their combination GCF + MV. The simulation results demonstrated that the THR-PCF + RCM-MV beamformer improved contrast ratio (CR) by 28.14%, contrast noise ratio (CNR) by 22.01%, speckle signal-to-noise ratio (s_SNR) by 23.58%, generalized contrast-to-noise ratio (GCNR) by 0.3%, and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) by 43.38% on average, compared with the GCF + MV method. The phantom experimental results showed a better performance of the THR-PCF + RCM-MV beamformer with an average improvement by 21.95% in CR, 2.62% in s_SNR, and 48.64% in FWHM compared with the GCF + MV. Meanwhile, the results showed that the image quality of the near and far fields was enhanced by the THR-PCF + RCM-MV. The in-vivo imaging results showed that our new method had potential for clinical application. In conclusion, the lateral resolution and contrast of medical ultrasound imaging could be improved greatly with our proposed method.

ABSTRACT

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is the most frequently found organophosphate pesticide residue in solid food samples and can cause increasing public concerns about potential risks to human health. Traditional detection signals of such small molecules are mostly generated by target-mediated indirect conversion, which tends to be detrimental to sensitivity and accuracy. Herein, a novel magnetic relaxation switching detection platform was developed for target-mediated direct and sensitive detection of CPF with a controllable aggregation strategy based on a bioorthogonal ligation reaction between tetrazine (Tz) and trans-cyclooctene (TCO) ligands. Under optimal conditions, this sensor can achieve a detection limit of 37 pg/mL with a broad linear range of 0.1-500 ng/mL in 45 min, which is approximately 51-fold lower than that of the gas chromatography analysis and 13-fold lower than that of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The proposed click chemistry-mediated controllable aggregation strategy is direct, rapid, and sensitive, indicating great potential for residue screening in food matrices.

ABSTRACT

Atherosclerosis, a chronic cardiovascular disease caused by plaque development in arteries, remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Atherosclerotic plaques are characterized by the expression and regulation of key molecules such as cell surface receptors, cytokines, and signaling pathway proteins, potentially facilitating precise diagnosis and treatment on a molecular level by specifically targeting the characteristic molecules. In this review, we highlight the recent progress in the past five years on developing molecularly targeted nanomedicine for imaging detection and treatment of atherosclerosis with the use of inorganic nanoparticles. Through targeted delivery of imaging contrast nanoparticles to specific molecules in atherogenesis, atherosclerotic plaque development at different stages could be identified and monitored via various molecular imaging modalities. We also review molecularly targeted therapeutic approaches that target and regulate molecules associated with lipid regulation, inflammation, and apoptosis. The review is concluded with discussion on current challenges and future development of nanomedicine for atherosclerotic diagnosis and treatment.

The age-related decay in oocyte quality contributes to the gradual decline in fertility and the final occurrence of natural sterility. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of the hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) on oocyte quality in aging mouse oocyte. Eight- and forty-week-old female C57BL/6 J mice were treated with HBO for 10 days, and the quality of oocytes was analyzed. The results revealed that HBOT improved the age-related serum AMH levels. While compared with untreated aged mice, HBOT showed reduced follicular apoptosis and improved oocyte maturation, fertilization, and blastocyst formation in aged mice. HBO triggered changes in the microRNA expression in the ovaries of aged mice. In this study, 27 DEGs were identified in the HBOT mouse ovarian tissues, of which 9 were upregulated and 18 were downregulated. Notably, KEGG analysis revealed that these genes involved in different biological processes differed significantly in the ovary. Among these, the PI3K-Akt signaling was the most prominent pathway that controlled the recruitment and growth of primordial follicles. The calcium signaling pathway was found to be involved during the peri-implantation period. These results suggest that HBOT can be applied to improve the quality of oocytes, and it could be a potential clinical application to improve the fertility of aged female.

The occurrence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in various environments has drawn worldwide attention due to their potential risks. Previous studies have reported that a variety of substances can enhance the occurrence and dissemination of ARGs. However, few studies have compared the response of ARGs under the stress of different organic matters in biological wastewater treatment systems. In this study, seven organic pollutants were added into wastewater treatment bioreactors to investigate their impacts on the ARG occurrence in activated sludge. Based on high-throughput sequencing, it was found that the microbial communities and ARG patterns were significantly changed in the activated sludge exposed to these organic pollutants. Compared with the non-antibiotic refractory organic matters, antibiotics not only increased the abundance of ARGs but also significantly changed the ARG compositions. The increase of Gram-negative bacteria (e.g., Archangium, Prosthecobacter and Dokdonella) carrying ARGs could be the main cause of ARG proliferation. In addition, significant co-occurrence relationships between ARGs and mobile genetic elements were also observed in the sludge samples, which may also affect the ARG diversity and abundance during the organic matter treatment in the bioreactors. Overall, these findings provide new information for better understanding the ARG occurrence and dissemination caused by organic pollutants in wastewater treatment systems.
