ABSTRACT

Three new compounds 1-glyceryl 9(ß), 10(α), 11(ß)-trihydroxy-12(Z)-octadecenoate, 2'S-20-O-p-hydroxyphenylpropionyloxy-20-hyd-roxyarachidic acid glycerol ester (2), 3-O-α-l-arabinopyranosyl-(1→6)-ß-d-glucopyranoside of ethyl (3S)-hydroxybutanoate (3), as well as a new natural product (4) were isolated from the fruits of Solanum virginianum L. The structures of 26 compounds were determined by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, NMR calculation, chemical methods, and comparisons of spectroscopic data. Compounds 2 and 16 exhibited good anti-inflammatory activity in the LPS-induced RAW 264.7 inflammatory model with IC50 values of 16.75 ± 1.54 and 22.43 ± 2.01 µM, respectively.

ABSTRACT

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) offer low costs and high power conversion efficiency. However, the lack of long-term stability, primarily stemming from the interfacial defects and the susceptible metal electrodes, hinders their practical application. In the past few years, two-dimensional (2D) materials (e.g., graphene and its derivatives, transitional metal dichalcogenides, MXenes, and black phosphorus) have been identified as a promising solution to solving these problems because of their dangling bond-free surfaces, layer-dependent electronic band structures, tunable functional groups, and inherent compactness. Here, recent progress of 2D material toward efficient and stable PSCs is summarized, including its role as both interface materials and electrodes. We discuss their beneficial effects on perovskite growth, energy level alignment, defect passivation, as well as blocking external stimulus. In particular, the unique properties of 2D materials to form van der Waals heterojunction at the bottom interface are emphasized. Finally, perspectives on the further development of PSCs using 2D materials are provided, such as designing high-quality van der Waals heterojunction, enhancing the uniformity and coverage of 2D nanosheets, and developing new 2D materials-based electrodes.

ABSTRACT

Formamidinium-lead triiodide (FAPbI3) perovskite holds promise as a prime candidate in the realm of perovskite photovoltaics. However, the photo-active α-FAPbI3 phase, existing as a metastable state, is observable solely at elevated temperatures and is susceptible to degradation into the δ-phase in ambient air. Therefore, the attainment of phase-stable α-FAPbI3 in ambient conditions has become a crucial objective in perovskite research. Here, we proposed an efficient conversion process of PbI2 into the α-FAPbI3 perovskites in ambient air. This conversion was facilitated by the introduction of chelating molecules, which interacted with PbI2 to form an intermediate phase. Due to the reduced formation barrier resulting from the altered reaction pathway, this stable intermediate phase transitioned directly into α-FAPbI3 upon the deposition of the organic cation solution, effectively bypassing the formation of δ-FAPbI3. Consequently, the ambient-fabricated FAPbI3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) exhibited an outstanding power conversion efficiency of 25.08 %, along with a high open-circuit voltage of 1.19 V. Furthermore, the unencapsulated devices demonstrated remarkable environmental stability. Notably, this innovative approach promises broad applicability across various chelating molecules, opening new avenues for further progress in the ambient air fabrication of FAPbI3 PSCs.

ABSTRACT

In the field of optical fiber vibration signal recognition, one-dimensional signals have few features. People often used the shallow layer of a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN), which results in fewer features being learned by the network, leading to a poor recognition rate. There are also many complex algorithms and data processing methods, which make the whole signal recognition process more complicated. Therefore, an optical vibration signal recognition method based on an efficient multidimensional feature extraction network was proposed. Based on ResNet-50, efficient channel attention (ECA) was used to improve image features extraction ability, and a long short-term memory (LSTM) network was used to enhance the extraction of temporal features. Three different vibration signals were collected using a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) optical fiber sensing system. Vibration signals were converted into 128×128 grayscale images, which have more effective vibration information. The experimental results show that the three types of signals can be recognized and classified effectively by the network, and the average recognition rate is 98.67%.

ABSTRACT

Perovskite/organic tandem solar cells (PO-TSCs) demonstrate exceptional suitability for emerging applications such as building-integrated photovoltaics, wearable devices, and greenhouse farming. By leveraging the distinctive attributes of perovskite and organic materials, which encompass expanded solar spectrum utilization, chemically benign solubility, and soft nature, PO-TSCs position themselves as ideal candidates for high-performance semi-transparent photovoltaics (ST-PVs). Despite these advantages, their development significantly lags behind other perovskite-based counterparts, such as perovskite/perovskite, perovskite/silicon, and perovskite/Cu(In, Ga)Se2. To address existing challenges and unlock the full potential of PO-TSCs, an exploration of the fundamental mechanisms governing tandem photovoltaic devices is embarked. Delving into critical aspects such as charge generation/separation, energy level alignment, and material choices becomes pivotal for optimizing PO-TSC performance. The investigation of monolithic two-terminal PO-TSCs offers insights into achievements and barriers, recognizing the competitive landscape with other TSC counterparts. Further scrutiny of perovskite absorbers and organic absorbers in TSCs reveals strategies aimed at enhancing stability and efficiency. The discussion extends to interconnection layers, elucidating their role in optimizing light transmission and balancing carrier recombination. In conclusion, a compelling outlook on the dynamic landscape of PO-TSCs is presented, highlighting the remarkable efficiency progression and signaling their potential to revolutionize solar energy harvesting technologies.

ABSTRACT

Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6) can inhibit the fibrosis of many organs. However, the relationship between SIRT6 and peritoneal fibrosis (PF) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) remains unclear. We collected 110 PD patients with a duration of PD for more than 3 months and studied the influence of PD duration and history of peritonitis on SIRT6 levels in PD effluents (PDEs). We also analyzed the relationship between SIRT6 levels in PDEs and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-ß1), IL-6, PD duration, peritoneal function, PD ultrafiltration (UF), and glucose exposure. We extracted human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HPMCs) from PDEs and measured the protein and gene expression levels of SIRT6, E-cadherin, vimentin, and TGF-ß1 in these cells. Based on the clinical results, we used human peritoneal mesothelial cells lines (HMrSV5) to observe the changes in SIRT6 levels and mesothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (MMT) after intervention with PD fluid. By overexpressing and knocking down SIRT6 expression, we investigated the effect of SIRT6 expression on E-cadherin, vimentin, and TGF-ß1 expression to elucidate the role of SIRT6 in mesothelial-to-epithelial transition in PMCs. Results: (1) With the extension of PD duration, the influence of infection on SIRT6 levels in PDEs increased. Patients with the PD duration of more than 5 years and a history of peritonitis had the lowest SIRT6 levels. (2) SIRT6 levels in PDEs were negatively correlated with PD duration, total glucose exposure, TGF-ß1, IL-6 levels, and the dialysate-to-plasma ratio of creatinine (Cr4hD/P), but positively correlated with UF. This indicates that SIRT6 has a protective effect on the peritoneum. (3) The short-term group (PD ≤ 1 year) had higher SIRT6 and E-cadherin gene and protein levels than the mid-term group (1 year < PD ≤ 5 years) and long-term group (PD > 5 years) in PMCs, while vimentin and TGF-ß1 levels were lower in the mid-term group and long-term group. Patients with a history of peritonitis had lower SIRT6 and E-cadherin levels than those without such a history. (4) After 4.25% PD fluid intervention for HPMCs, longer intervention time resulted in lower SIRT6 levels. (5) Overexpressing SIRT6 can lead to increased E-cadherin expression and decreased vimentin and TGF-ß1 expression in HPMCs. Knocking down SIRT6 expression resulted in decreased E-cadherin expression and increased vimentin and TGF-ß1 expression in HPMCs. This indicates that SIRT6 expression can inhibit MMT in HPMCs, alleviate PF associated with PD, and have a protective effect on the peritoneum.

Background: Epigenetic DNA methylation is an essential mechanism controlling gene expression and cellular function. Existing analyses with conventional assays have generated significant insights into static states of DNA methylation, but were unable to visualize the dynamics of epigenetic regulation. Aim: We utilized a genomic DNA methylation reporter (GMR) system to track changes in DNA methylation during cardiac differentiation. Methods and Results: The promoter region of Cdk1 (Cyclin-dependent kinase 1) or Sox2 (SRY-Box Transcription Factor 2) gene was cloned upstream of the small nuclear ribonucleoprotein polypeptide N (Snrpn) minimal promoter followed by a fluorescent reporter gene. Mouse induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) carrying Sox2 GMR rapidly lost fluorescent reporter signal upon the induction of differentiation. Cdk1 GMR reporter signal was strong in undifferentiated iPSCs, and gradually decreased during directed cardiomyocyte (CM) differentiation. RT-qPCR and pyrosequencing demonstrated that the reduction of Sox2 and Cdk1 was regulated by hypermethylation of their CpG regions during cardiac differentiation. The present study demonstrated the dynamic DNA methylation along the course of cell cycle withdrawal during CM differentiation. Conclusion: The GMR reporter system can be a useful tool to monitor real-time epigenetic DNA modification at single-cell resolution.

The extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway, a critical genetic determinant, controls diverse physiological functions, including innate immunity, development, and stress response. In the current study, a full-length cDNA (1592bp) encoding the ERK gene (OfERK) was cloned from Ostrinia furnacalis Guenée (GenBank accession number: MF797866). The open reading frame of the OfERK gene encoded 364 amino acids and shared 96.43%-98.08% amino acid identities with other insect mitogen-activated protein kinases. For spatiotemporal analysis of the expression pattern, OfERK exhibited a significant peak expression on the 3rd day of the pupa stage and showed the highest expression in hemocytes specifically. Indirect immunofluorescence assays and immuno-electron microscopy revealed a wide distribution of the OfERK protein in hemocytes and epidermis. Moreover, the results demonstrated that the Bt Cry1Ab-activated toxin significantly induces the expression of OfERK. Other genes related to immune response, development, and stress response exhibited dynamic changes in expression after Cry1Ab oral treatment. The expression of OfERK was downregulated through RNA interference, and the correlation of its expression with other related genes was verified using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Our study provides valuable insights into the regulatory mechanism of ERK in insects for future studies.

ABSTRACT

Three undescribed schinortriterpenoids, schinensilactones D-F (1-3), together with five known ones, namely, wuweizidilactone A (4), wuweizidilactone C (5), wuweizidilactone F (6), wuweizidilactone J (7) and wuweizidilactone N (8), were isolated from the leaves of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill. The structures of new compounds were established by analysis of their spectroscopic data including MS, IR, 1D- and 2D-NMR spectra. The absolute configuration of 1 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. All compounds were evaluated for their neuroprotective effects against H2O2-induced injury in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell lines. Cell viability was remarkably reduced to 52.33% in H2O2-treated cells. Compounds 5-7 exhibited moderate neuroprotective activities at 50 µM, with cell viability of 64.84%, 67.34% and 63.73%, respectively.

Background: Postoperative delirium (POD) is prevalent in craniotomy patients and is associated with high mortality. Sleep disturbances are receiving increasing attention from clinicians as associated risk factors for postoperative complications. This study aimed to determine the impact of preoperative sleep disturbances on POD in craniotomy patients. Methods: We recruited 130 patients undergoing elective craniotomy for intracranial tumors between May 1st and December 30th, 2022. Preoperative subjective sleep disturbances were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index on the day of admission. We also measured objective perioperative sleep patterns using a dedicated sleep monitoring device 3 days before and 3 days after the surgery. POD was assessed twice daily using the Confusion Assessment Model for the Intensive Care Unit within the first week after craniotomy. Results: Preoperative sleep disturbances were diagnosed in 49% of the study patients, and POD was diagnosed in 22% of all the study patients. Sleep disturbances were an independent risk factor for POD (OR: 2.709, 95% CI: 1.020-7.192, P = 0.045). Other risk factors for POD were age (OR: 3.038, 95% CI: 1.195-7.719, P = 0.020) and the duration of urinary catheterization (OR: 1.246, 95% CI: 1.025-1.513, P = 0.027). Perioperative sleep patterns (including sleep latency, deep sleep duration, frequency of awakenings, apnea-hypopnea index, and sleep efficiency) were significantly associated with POD. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that preoperative sleep disturbances predispose patients undergoing craniotomy to POD, also inferred a correlation between perioperative sleep patterns and POD. The targeted screening and intervention specifically for sleep disturbances during the perioperative period are immensely required.

Printing technology will improve the complexity and material waste of traditional deposition and lithography processes in device fabrication. In particular, the printing process can effectively control the functional layer stacking and channel shape in thin-film transistor (TFT) devices. We prepared the patterning indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) semiconductor layer with Ga, In, and Zn molar ratios of 1:2:7 on Si/SiO2 substrates. And the patterning source and drain electrodes were printed on the surface of semiconductor layers to construct a TFT device with the top contact and bottom gate structures. To overcome the problem of uniform distribution of applied voltages between electrode centers and edges, we investigated whether the circular arc channel could improve the carrier regulation ability under the field effect in printed TFTs compared with a traditional structure of rectangular symmetry and a rectangular groove channel. The drain current value of the IGZO TFT with a circular arc channel pattern was significantly enhanced compared to that of a TFT with rectangular symmetric source/drain electrodes under the corresponding drain-source voltage and gate voltage. The field effect properties of the device were obviously improved by introducing the arc-shaped channel structure.

Objective: Although the quality of perioperative sleep is gaining increasing attention in clinical recovery, its impact role remains unknown and may deserve further exploration. This study aimed to investigate the associations between perioperative sleep patterns and clinical outcomes among patients with intracranial tumors. Methods: A correlation study was conducted in patients with intracranial tumors. Perioperative sleep patterns were assessed using a dedicated sleep monitor for 6 consecutive days. Clinical outcomes were gained through medical records and follow-up. Spearman's correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression analysis were applied to evaluate the associations between perioperative sleep patterns and clinical outcomes. Results: Of 110 patients, 48 (43.6%) were men, with a median age of 57 years. A total of 618 days of data on perioperative sleep patterns were collected and analyzed. Multiple linear regression models revealed that the preoperative blood glucose was positively related to the preoperative frequency of awakenings (ß = 0.125; 95% CI = 0.029-0.221; P = 0.011). The level of post-operative nausea and vomiting was negatively related to perioperative deep sleep time (ß = -0.015; 95% CI = -0.027--0.003; P = 0.015). The level of anxiety and depression was negatively related to perioperative deep sleep time, respectively (ß = -0.048; 95% CI = -0.089-0.008; P = 0.020, ß = -0.041; 95% CI = -0.076-0.006; P = 0.021). The comprehensive complication index was positively related to the perioperative frequency of awakenings (ß = 3.075; 95% CI = 1.080-5.070; P = 0.003). The post-operative length of stay was negatively related to perioperative deep sleep time (ß = -0.067; 95% CI = -0.113-0.021; P = 0.005). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was positively related to perioperative sleep onset latency (ß = 0.097; 95% CI = 0.044-0.150; P < 0.001) and negatively related to perioperative deep sleep time (ß = -0.079; 95% CI = -0.122-0.035; P < 0.001). Conclusion: Perioperative sleep patterns are associated with different clinical outcomes. Poor perioperative sleep quality, especially reduced deep sleep time, has a negative impact on clinical outcomes. Clinicians should, therefore, pay more attention to sleep quality and improve it during the perioperative period. Clinical trial registration: http://www.chictr.org.cn, identifier: ChiCTR2200059425.

ABSTRACT

Neuromorphic vision has been attracting much attention due to its advantages over conventional machine vision (e.g., lower data redundancy and lower power consumption). Here we develop synaptic phototransistors based on the silicon nanomembrane (Si NM), which are coupled with lead sulfide quantum dots (PbS QDs) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) to form a heterostructure with distinct photogating. Synaptic phototransistors with optical stimulation have outstanding synaptic functionalities ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR). The broadband synaptic functionalities enable an array of synaptic phototransistors to achieve the perception of brightness and color. In addition, an array of synaptic phototransistors is capable of simultaneous sensing, processing, and memory, which well mimics human vision.

BACKGROUND/AIM: In addition to its established role in regulating circadian rhythms and reducing inflammation, melatonin has been demonstrated to possess anti-cancer properties. In this study, we investigated the effects of exosomal miRNAs released by melatonin-treated GC cells on gastric cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To identify the potential exosomal miRNAs involved in the treatment of gastric cancer, we performed exosome small RNA sequencing (sRNA-seq) to screen significant changes in 34 exosomal miRNAs in AGS cells before and after melatonin treatment. CCK-8, wound healing, and transwell invasion assays were used to examine the effects of miRNAs on cancer characteristics. Furthermore, a dual-luciferase reporter gene assay was performed to identify the miRNA targets. RESULTS: Exosomal miR-27b-3p was down-regulated by approximately 1.37-fold following melatonin treatment. The CCK-8 assay revealed a significant increase in cell proliferation in the miR-27b-3p mimic group compared to that in the miR-27b-3p mimic NC group. In the wound healing assay, cells treated with miR-27b-3p mimics displayed significantly more rapid wound closure than that observed in the miR-27b-3p mimic NC group. The transwell invasion assay revealed a substantial increase in the number of invading cells in the miR-27b-3p mimic group compared to that in the miR-27b-3p mimic NC group. Additional analysis revealed that miR-27b-3p directly targets ADAMTS5 and that its up-regulation results in increased proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of GC cells. CONCLUSION: Melatonin suppressed the progression of gastric cancer by regulating the exosomal miR-27b-3p-ADAMTS5 pathway. Thus, melatonin represents a promising potential therapeutic agent for patients with gastric cancer.

ABSTRACT

Despite the remarkable progress made in perovskite solar cells, great concerns regarding potential Pb contamination risk and environmental vulnerability risks associated with perovskite solar cells pose a significant obstacle to their real-world commercialization. In this study, we took inspiration from the ensnaring prey behavior of spiders and chemical components in spider web to strategically implant a multifunctional mesoporous amino-grafted-carbon net into perovskite solar cells, creating a biomimetic cage traps that could effectively mitigate Pb leakage and shield the external invasion under extreme weather conditions. The synergistic Pb capturing mechanism in terms of chemical chelation and physical adsorption is in-depth explored. Additionally, the Pb contamination assessment of end-of-life perovskite solar cells in the real-world ecosystem, including Yellow River water and soil, is proposed. The sustainable closed-loop Pb management process is also successfully established involving four critical steps: Pb precipitation, Pb adsorption, Pb desorption, and Pb recycling. Our findings provide inspiring insights for promoting green and sustainable industrialization of perovskite solar cells.

This paper first measures and compares the size of middle-income groups in China based on the subjective income evaluation method and the objective criteria. Second, it empirically investigates the differences in government trust of different income groups defined by the subjective evaluation method and the objective criteria. It is found that there is a significant difference between the results of the subjective evaluation of income and objective criteria. Compared with individuals in the middle-income group, individuals in the low-income group have a significantly worse overall evaluation of local government and a considerably lower trust in local government officials. On the other hand, individuals in the high-income group have a substantially better assessment of local government and a significantly higher trust in local government officials. However, the differences in trust in government across income groups defined by objective criteria are insignificant overall. In terms of policy insights, the effect of targeting low-income groups determined by subjective evaluation may be more effective in improving people's trust in the government.

ABSTRACT

Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) may deviate from their predetermined trajectory in underwater currents due to the complex effects of hydrodynamics on their maneuverability. Model-based control methods are commonly employed to address this problem, but they suffer from issues related to the time-variability of parameters and the inaccuracy of mathematical models. To improve these, a meta-learning and self-adaptation hybrid approach is proposed in this paper to enable an underwater robot to adapt to ocean currents. Instead of using a traditional complex mathematical model, a deep neural network (DNN) serving as the basis function is trained to learn a high-order hydrodynamic model offline; then, a set of linear coefficients is adjusted dynamically by an adaptive law online. By conjoining these two strategies for real-time thrust compensation, the proposed method leverages the potent representational capacity of DNN along with the rapid response of adaptive control. This combination achieves a significant enhancement in tracking performance compared to alternative controllers, as observed in simulations. These findings substantiate that the AUV can adeptly adapt to new speeds of ocean currents.

ABSTRACT

Multifunctional photodetectors boost the development of traditional optical communication technology and emerging artificial intelligence fields, such as robotics and autonomous driving. However, the current implementation of multifunctional detectors is based on the physical combination of optical lenses, gratings, and multiple photodetectors, the large size and its complex structure hinder the miniaturization, lightweight, and integration of devices. In contrast, perovskite materials have achieved remarkable progress in the field of multifunctional photodetectors due to their diverse crystal structures, simple morphology manipulation, and excellent optoelectronic properties. In this review, we first overview the crystal structures and morphology manipulation techniques of perovskite materials and then summarize the working mechanism and performance parameters of multifunctional photodetectors. Furthermore, the fabrication strategies of multifunctional perovskite photodetectors and their advancements are highlighted, including polarized light detection, spectral detection, angle-sensing detection, and self-powered detection. Finally, the existing problems of multifunctional detectors and the perspectives of their future development are presented.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis patients are prone to gastrointestinal bleeding, and Mallory-Weiss syndrome (MWS) is one of the causes. Mallory-Weiss syndrome is often induced by severe vomiting, manifests as upper gastrointestinal bleeding, and is self-limited with a good prognosis. However, mild vomiting in hemodialysis patients can lead to the occurrence of MWS, and the mild early symptoms are easy to misdiagnose, leading to the aggravation of the disease. CASE PRESENTATION: In this paper, we report four hemodialysis patients with MWS. All patients displayed symptoms of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The diagnosis of MWS was confirmed by gastroscopy. One patient had a history of severe vomiting; however, the other three reported histories of mild vomiting. Three patients received the conservative hemostasis treatment, and the gastrointestinal bleeding stopped. One patient underwent the gastroscopic and interventional hemostasis treatments. The conditions of three of the patients improved. Unfortunately, one of the patients died due to the cardia insufficiency. CONCLUSIONS: We think that the mild symptoms of MWS are easily covered up by other symptoms. This may lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment. For patients with severe symptoms, gastroscopic hemostasis is still the first choice, and interventional hemostasis can also be considered. For patients with mild symptoms, drug hemostasis is the first consideration.

ABSTRACT

The incidence of postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction among neurosurgical patients is as high as 80%. Probiotics help to maintain gastrointestinal barrier defense, provide competitive adherence to mucus and epithelial cells, and regulate gastrointestinal motility. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether probiotics enhance gastrointestinal health after craniotomy in patients with brain tumors. This study was a 15-day, prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial for patients being treated with elective craniotomy for brain tumors. Participants were randomly divided into the probiotics group (4 g probiotics, twice daily) and placebo group. The primary outcome was the time of first stool after surgery. The secondary outcomes included assessments of the gastrointestinal function, changes in gastrointestinal permeability and clinical outcomes. We enrolled a total of 200 participants (probiotics: 100; placebo: 100) and followed the principles of intention-to-treat analysis. The time of first stool and flatus were significantly shorter in the probiotics group compared to the placebo group (P < 0.001, respectively). No significant trends were observed for any other of the secondary outcome variables. Our findings suggest that probiotics can improve the gastrointestinal mobility of patients received craniotomy, and this improvement cannot be explained by changes in gastrointestinal permeability.
