ABSTRACT

A series of symmetrical tetracyanobutadiene and tetracyanoquinodimethane derivatives with a D-A-D'-A-D structural configuration and silafluorene core (D') were designed and readily synthesized via a [2+2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization (CA-RE) reaction. We found that the photophysical properties and HOMO and LUMO energy levels and gaps of the silafluorene derivatives could be profoundly remolded through CA-RE reactions and modulated by varying the peripheral donor units from phenyl, m-dimethoxyphenyl, and N,N-dimethylaniline to triphenylamine groups. After CA-RE reactions, the HOMO-LUMO gaps of 1a-1j are in the range of 1.75-2.78 eV, with significant decreases of 0.52-1.46 eV compared to those of the parent silafluorene compounds 2a-2j. The intriguing crystal structures of 1f and 1j were analyzed and elucidated to show their unique potential porosity. The stability, electrochemical, and computational studies were systematically performed to unveil the reshaped electron-donating and -withdrawing nature in one molecular system. 1h-1j with peripherally strong amino donors exhibit an intense and broad intramolecular charge transfer absorption band in the near-infrared region from 550 to 900 nm. The molecular design and synthesis reported here broaden the types and fields of D-A molecular systems for potential applications in organic optoelectronic devices.

ABSTRACT

Taking the surrounding areas of Xiaowan Reservoir in the middle reach of Lancangjiang River as study area, and based on the vegetation investigation at three sites including electricity transmission area (site 1), electricity-transfer substation and roadsides to the substation (site 2), and emigration area (site 3) in 1997 (before dam construction), another investigation was conducted on the vegetation composition, plant coverage, and dominant species at the same sites in 2010 (after dam construction), aimed to evaluate the ecological risk of the dam construction for the terrestrial plant species in middle reach of Lancangjiang River. There was an obvious difference in the summed dominance ratio of dominant species at the three sites before and after the dam construction. According the types of species (dominant and non-dominant species) and the changes of plant dominance, the ecological risk (ER) for the plant species was categorized into 0 to IV, i.e., no or extremely low ecological risk (0), low ecological risk (I), medium ecological risk (II), high ecological risk (III), and extremely high ecological risk (IV). As affected by the dam construction, the majority of the species were at ER III, and a few species were at ER IV. The percentage of the plant species at ER III and ER IV at site 3 was higher than that at sites 1 and 2. The decrease or loss of native plants and the increase of alien or invasive plants were the major ecological risks caused by the dam construction. Effective protection strategies should be adopted to mitigate the ecological risk of the dam construction for the terrestrial plants at species level.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated temporal heavy metal characteristics over the past 20 years and the spatial variation of heavy metal characteristics at the Manwan Reservoir tail, center, and head in the Lancang River, Yunnan Province, China. The following heavy metals were selected for analysis: Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, As, Cr, Fe, and Mn. Multivariate statistical methods, including principal component analysis (PCA) and the Pearson correlation matrix were used to distinguish the main pollution factors and sources before and after dam construction. The results indicate that the average annual values of heavy metals were far lower than the recommended values of the surface water quality standards in China with the exception of Hg. The concentration of metals showed considerable variation by season, where higher levels of metals generally occurred in high flow periods. The results from PCA show that three significant components were extracted, explaining 76.25% of the total variance. The ANOVA results indicate that Pb, Fe, Mn, and Cr had significant spatial variation (P < 0.05) at the reservoir tail, center and head. The enrichment factor (EF) used to compare the accumulation effect of heavy metals indicated that there was no enrichment (EF < 1) of heavy metals with the exception of Mn, which showed minor enrichment (1 < EF < 3) between the reservoir center and head. The spatiotemporal variation and the accumulation effects of water heavy metals were not distinct due to the construction of the Manwan Reservoir.

ABSTRACT

By using the quantitative index of 'probability of connectivity', this paper analyzed the effects of road network on the landscape pattern, ecological process, and landscape function in the typical areas of Yunnan Province. Road network accelerated landscape fragmentation, and changed the structure, number, and distribution pattern of ecological process dispersal paths, with the effects increased with increasing dispersal ability. The road network generally reduced the landscape function in maintaining ecological process connectivity by > 10% and the patch function by > 40%, and the effect also increased with increasing dispersal ability.
