ABSTRACT

The concept of pore space partition has emerged as an effective strategy for developing improved coordination-based supramolecular porous materials with exceptional performance. Herein, we report that a water-soluble self-assembled tetrahedral cage 1 with a partitioned cavity shown excellent performance as a multifunctional extractant. The results show that this unique partitioned cavity can efficiently separate halogenated adamantanes, adamantane isomers, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Furthermore, the influence of cavity-partitioned cage 1 on the electrochemical properties of redox-active molecules and electrochemically driven reversible host-guest process has also been demonstrated. The findings offer valuable insights into the design and development of new type of materials with controlled phase separation and tailored electrochemical properties.

ABSTRACT

Hierarchical combinations involving metal-ligand interactions and host-guest interactions can consolidate building blocks with unique functions into material properties. This study reports the construction and hierarchical self-assembly of multifunctional trinuclear AuI tricarbene complex containing three crown ether units and three ferrocene units. Host-guest interactions between the multifunctional trinuclear AuI tricarbene complex and organic ammonium salts were investigated, revealing that crown ether-based host-guest interactions can effectively regulate the electrochemical properties of the complex. Utilizing bisammonium salt as the cross-linker and multifunctional trinuclear AuI tricarbene complex as the core, a stimuli-responsive and self-healing supramolecular gel with different functional units was obtained.

ABSTRACT

Herein, a series of face-capped (Tr2M3)4L4 (Tr = cycloheptatrienyl cationic ring; M = metal; L = organosulfur ligand) tetrahedral cages 1-3 functionalized with 12 appended crown ether moieties were designed and synthesized. The reversible binding of ammonium cations with peripheral crown ether moieties to adjust internal guest-binding was realized. Combination of a bisammonium linker and cage 3 led to the formation of a supramolecular gel SPN1 via host-guest interactions between the crown ether moieties and ammonium salts. The obtained supramolecular gel exhibited multiple-stimuli responsiveness, injectability, and excellent self-healing properties and could be further developed to a SPN1-based drug delivery system. In addition, the storage modulus of SPN1 was 20 times higher than that of the model gel without Pd-Pd bonded blocks, and SPN1 had better self-healing properties compared with the latter, demonstrating the importance of such cages in improving mechanical strength without losing the dynamic properties of the material. The cytotoxicity in vitro of the drug-loaded (doxorubicin or methotrexate) SPN1 was significantly improved compared to that of free drugs.

ABSTRACT

A facile synthetic method to form cage-annulated crown ether with anchored imidazolium units was developed. The present work verified the potential application of the metal-carbene template approach (MCTA) in the preparation of novel flexible polyimidazolium cages by photochemical [2+2] cycloaddition reactions and may provide a new method for the preparation of flexible pure organic cages with incorporation of a variety of functional sites.

ABSTRACT

Background: Early morning off (EMO) refers to off-states in the morning in people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). This study determined the clinical manifestations of EMO and the association with nocturnal sleep problems and quality of life (QOL) in Chinese PwPD. Methods: In this multicenter, observational, cross-sectional study, data concerning the clinical manifestations of EMO were collected from PwPD in Shanghai by questionnaire. The stepwise logistic regression was performed to analyze the potential risk factors, as well as whether EMO was an independent risk factor for functional dependency in daily life. The mediation analyses were conducted to evaluate whether nocturnal sleep problems might mediate the association between EMO and the QOL. Results: Among the 454 subjects evaluated, EMO occurred in 39.43% of PwPD across all disease stages. The prevalence of EMO increased as the Hoehn and Yahr stage increased and was observed in 35.60% of patients in stages 1-2.5 and 48.85% of patients in stages 3-5. EMO was associated with non-motor symptoms (NMSs). The predominant NMSs associated with EMO were nocturnal sleep problems (98.90%), mood/cognition impairment (93.90%), decreased attention/memory (91.60%), gastrointestinal symptoms (91.60%), and urinary urgency (90.50%). The QOL of PwPD with EMO was significantly reduced (P < 0.001). Moreover, nocturnal sleep problems might partially mediate this relationship (indirect effect: ß = 13.458, 95% boot CI: 6.436, 22.042). Conclusion: PwPD have EMO throughout all stages of the disease. Patients with EMO have severe motor symptoms and NMSs. EMO decreases the QOL in PwPD and this relationship is partially mediated by nocturnal sleep problems. In light of these findings, it is suggested that recognition and appropriate treatment of EMO and nocturnal sleep problems could improve the management of PwPD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Psychotic symptoms are common in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the clinical characteristics of PD psychosis (PDP) have been rarely reported in Chinese PD patients. We aimed to categorize PDP in a PD cohort and its relationship to other clinical characteristics. METHODS: A total of 149 Chinese PD patients were consecutively enrolled, and idiopathic PD patients were recruited in the study. The symptoms of PDP were assessed with the enhanced Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms in PD. Then, the patients were classified into a PD-control group, isolated minor hallucination (MH) group, and complex MH group, and clinical and demographic data of different groups were compared. RESULTS: Parkinson's disease psychosis was present in 40.3% (60/149) of our patients. The most common PDPs were MHs, present in 32.9% (49 of 149) of the cohort. Compared to patients without MHs, patients with MHs were older, had a longer disease duration, a higher levodopa equivalent daily dose, more severe motor symptoms, dyskinesia, a higher rate of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorders, frontal lobe function impairments, and a higher percentage of cognitive impairment. Logistic regression analysis showed that advanced Hoehn-Yahr stage [odds ratio (OR): 2.697, p = 0.007)] and frontal lobe function impairment (OR: 0.684, p = 0.003) were independent risk factors for MHs. CONCLUSION: MHs were frequent non-motor symptoms in PD patients. It was associated with increased motor and non-motor symptom burdens and reduced quality of life. MHs have been called "minor," but they have major clinical and prognostic implications and need early screening.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and the occurrence and progression of apathy in Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: We recruited patients with PD who underwent baseline evaluation, which included apathy assessment and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) head scans. After 2.5 years of follow-up, we re-evaluated patient apathy symptoms. The severity and location of WMH were assessed with fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences using the Fazekas visual rating scale. Logistic regression and linear regression analyses of baseline WMH characteristics were conducted to explore the potential association between apathy and WMH. RESULTS: A total of 141 PD patients were recruited. The apathy group had a higher proportion of male patients, advanced disease, and depression, which was coupled with a lower quality of life. Morever, higher WMH severity was significantly associated with apathy. Logistic regression analyses demonstrated that WMH severity was a risk factor for apathy. In addition, linear regression analysis also suggests that apathy severity is positively correlated with baseline WMH Fazekas scales (ϐ = 0.959, P < 0.001). Baseline WMH severity was also a risk factor for apathy progression. INTERPRETATION: WMH is associated with apathy and could be a promising marker to predict apathy progression in PD.
