ABSTRACT

Mn-based mullite oxides AMn2O5 (A = lanthanide, Y, Bi) is a novel type of ternary catalyst in terms of their electronic and geometric structures. The coexistence of pyramid Mn3+-O and octahedral Mn4+-O makes the d-orbital selectively active toward various catalytic reactions. The alternative edge- and corner-sharing stacking configuration constructs the confined active sites and abundant active oxygen species. As a result, they tend to show superior catalytic behaviors and thus gain great attention in environmental treatment and energy conversion and storage. In environmental applications, Mn-based mullites have been demonstrated to be highly active toward low-temperature oxidization of CO, NO, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), etc. Recent research further shows that mullites decompose O3 and ozonize VOCs from -20 °C to room temperature. Moreover, mullites enhance oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) and sulfur reduction reactions (SRR), critical kinetic steps in air-battery and Li-S batteries, respectively. Their distinctive structures also facilitate applications in gas-sensitive sensing, ionic conduction, high mobility dielectrics, oxygen storage, piezoelectricity, dehydration, H2O2 decomposition, and beyond. A comprehensive review from basic physicochemical properties to application certainly not only gains a full picture of mullite oxides but also provides new insights into designing heterogeneous catalysts.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Perineal hernia (PH) is a rare complication that can occur after abdominoperineal resection for rectal cancer. Laparoscopic repair of PHs has gained increasing popularity compared to open approaches due to advantages such as superior visualization, decreased invasiveness, and faster recovery. This case report highlights the successful use of laparoscopic tension-free mesh repair for concurrent perineal and inguinal hernias after rectal cancer surgery. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 51-year-old man underwent laparoscopic-assisted abdominoperineal resection for rectal cancer. About 2 months postoperatively, he developed reducible masses in the perineal and left groin regions, associated with urinary symptoms and sensation of prolapse. Physical exam revealed protruding masses that enlarged with Valsalva. Pelvic CT confirmed PH and left inguinal hernia. INTERVENTIONS: Laparoscopic tension-free repair of the PH and inguinal hernia was performed on this patient. The repair was completed by the steps of adhesion separation, mesh placement, and fixation. OUTCOMES: The 98-minute surgery was successful without complications. The patient recovered well, ambulating on postoperative day 2 and getting discharged on day 6. CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates that laparoscopic tension-free repair with mesh is an effective approach for treating PH and concurrent inguinal hernia following rectal cancer surgery, resulting in successful outcomes and low recurrence rates. The laparoscopic technique provides benefits of minimal invasiveness and rapid recovery.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) and pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS) share clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features but differ in prognosis and management. Early POMS diagnosis is essential to avoid disability accumulation. Central vein sign (CVS), paramagnetic rim lesions (PRLs), and central core lesions (CCLs) are susceptibility-based imaging (SbI)-related signs understudied in pediatric populations that may help discerning POMS from MOGAD. METHODS: T2-FLAIR and SbI (three-dimensional echoplanar imaging (3D-EPI)/susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) or similar) were acquired on 1.5T/3T scanners. Two readers assessed CVS-positive rate (%CVS+), and their average score was used to build a receiver operator curve (ROC) assessing the ability to discriminate disease type. PRLs and CCLs were identified using a consensual approach. RESULTS: The %CVS+ distinguished 26 POMS cases (mean age 13.7 years, 63% females, median EDSS 1.5) from 14 MOGAD cases (10.8 years, 35% females, EDSS 1.0) with ROC = 1, p < 0.0001, (cutoff 41%). PRLs were only detectable in POMS participants (mean 2.1±2.3, range 1-10), discriminating the two conditions with a sensitivity of 69% and a specificity of 100%. CCLs were more sensitive (81%) but less specific (71.43%). CONCLUSION: The %CVS+ and PRLs are highly specific markers of POMS. After proper validation on larger multicenter cohorts, consideration should be given to including such imaging markers for diagnosing POMS at disease onset.

ABSTRACT

Thamnolia vermicularis (Tv) and Thamnolia subuliformis (Ts) are two species from the same habitat with such similar external morphological characteristics that researchers often confuse the two in their scientific work and do not distinguish between them. This study applies three different methods to distinguish them. The diversity of endophytic fungi was also compared and their antibacterial activity in vitro was evaluated. The results show that all three methods can distinguish Tv and Ts, and can be used to cross-validate each other. The ultraviolet fluorescence method and the chemical colour change method are simpler strategies, while thin-layer chromatography is relatively complicated but can more clearly distinguish the chemical composition of the two species. In the analysis of the endophytic fungi community structure of Tv and Ts, it was found that the diversity of endophytic fungi in Tv was more abundant and had wider antibacterial activity and better inhibitory activity against gram-positive bacteria in vitro.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in quantitatively evaluating angiogenesis during patellar tendon healing in rats. Methods: A total of 40 Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. The patellar tendons of 30 rats (60 limbs) that underwent incision and suture were treated as the operation group and monitored after 7, 14, and 28 days. The normal patellar tendons of 10 rats (20 limbs) were treated as the control group and monitored on day 0. The ultrasound examination was used to evaluate the structure and blood perfusion of the patellar tendon. Immunohistochemistry was used to assess angiogenesis, and the biomechanical test was used to verify functional recovery of the patellar tendon. Results: The tendons in the operation group were significantly thickened compared with those in the control group (p < 0.01). The peak intensity (PI) in CEUS of the tendons showed a clear difference at each time point after the surgery (p < 0.01). PI increased in the operation group with a maximum on day 7, and then gradually decreased until day 28 when PI was close to the basic intensity (BI) in the control group (p > 0.05). It was consistent with the change of the CD31-positive staining areas representing angiogenesis of the injured patellar tendons. The PI was positively correlated with the CD31-positive staining area fraction (R = 0.849, p < 0.001). The failure load and tensile strength of the repaired patellar tendons in the operation group increased over time. The PI showed negative correlations with the failure load (R = -0.787, p < 0.001) and tensile strength (R = -0.714, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The PI in CEUS could quantitatively reflect the time-dependent change in the blood supply of the healing site, and the PI correlated with histologic and biomechanical properties of the healing tendon. Quantitative analysis of contrast-enhanced ultrasound could be a useful method to evaluate angiogenesis in healing tendons.

ABSTRACT

Tendon regeneration is still a great challenge due to its avascular structure and low self-renewal capability. The nitric oxide (NO) therapy emerges as a promising treatment for inducing the regeneration of injured tendon by angiogenesis. Here, in this study, a system that NO-loaded metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) encapsulated in polycaprolactone (PCL)/gelatin (Gel) aligned coaxial scaffolds (NMPGA) is designed and prepared for tendon repair. In this system, NO is able to be released in vitro at a slow and stable average speed of 1.67 nM h-1 as long as 15 d without a burst release stage in the initial 48 h. Furthermore, NMPGA can not only improve the tubular formation capability of endothelial cells in vitro but also obviously increase the blood perfusion near the injured tendon in vivo, leading to accelerating the maturity of collagen and recovery of biomechanical strength of the regenerated tendon tissue. As a NO-loaded MOFs therapeutic system, NMPGA can promote tendon regeneration in a shorter healing period with better biomechanical properties in comparison with control group by angiogenesis. Therefore, this study not only provides a promising scaffold for tendon regeneration, but also paves a new way to develop a NO-based therapy for biomedical application in the future.
