ABSTRACT

Influence of reduced thyroid gland function upon peripheral blood neutrophil functional activity in Wistar rats with acute mechanical trauma of gingival was studied. Thyroid insufficiency was simulated by daily intraoral Mercazole administration in the doze of 25 mg/kg during 21 days. The parodontal inflammatory process in rats with reduced thyroid gland function was characterized by reduced indicators of spontaneous and induced HCT-tests, by lower activity of posttraumatic inflammatory purulent processes in comparison with animals with euthyroid status.

ABSTRACT

The results of surgical treatment of fractures of the mandibular condyle are analyzed in 36 children (39 surgeries) aged 3 to 17; 33 of the operations were carried out in fractures complicated with the dislocation of the condylar head. Reposition and osteosynthesis of the fragments were carried out in 17 cases, replantation of the condyle in 10, and arthroplasty of the temporomandibular joint in 12 patients. Good late anatomico-functional and esthetic results were achieved in 84.6% of cases; this is explained by a differentiated approach to the choice of surgical strategy, an effective system of rehabilitation measures, including early exercise, orthodontic treatment, and low-frequency electromyostimulation.

ABSTRACT

The technique of electrostimulation of the soft palate muscles of children with cleft palate is described. Low-frequency electrostimulation courses were carried out before and after surgery in accordance with the degree of decompensation of the palatopharyngeal junction. This method was effectively used in 30 children with cleft palate. The treatment efficacy was assessed by the morphometric and electromyographic methods, that have confirmed that electrostimulation improved the morphology of soft palatal muscles.

ABSTRACT

At light optic and electron microscopical levels with application of morphometric analysis the mouth orbicular muscle has been studied in 6-8-month-old children with a complete unilateral cleft lip. The muscle is characterized by distinctly manifested signs of hypertrophy: high contents of the connective tissue, poor capillarization, presence of focal destructive-degenerative changes in the muscle fibers; they result from decreased function of the muscle activity. Preoperative physiotherapeutic treatment with pulsed low-frequency electrical current stimulates development of the muscle tissue. In the muscle specific share of muscle fibers increases, and contents of the connective tissue decreases, respectively, indices of capillarization improve, mitochondrial apparatus of the muscle fibers becomes more powerful.

ABSTRACT

The authors have elaborated the technic for procurement of homografts from the lower jaw bone taken from cadaver-donors, without observing aseptic rules, with their subsequent ethylene epoxide sterilization in a portable chamber. Experimental studies have demonstrated that ethylene epoxide renders no negative effect on osteoplastic properties of the homograft, the rate of its reconstruction was dependent on the method of preservation. The results of osteohomoplasty for mandibular defects in 46 patients are summarized.
