ABSTRACT

Anisotropic nanostructures with tunable optical properties induced by controllable size and symmetry have attracted much attention in many applications. Herein, we report a controlled synthesis of symmetrically branched AuCu alloyed nanocrystals. By varying Au:Cu atom ratio in precursor, Y-shaped tripods with three-fold symmetry and star-shaped pentapods with five-fold symmetry are synthesized, respectively. The growth mechanism of AuCu tripods from icosahedral seeds and AuCu pentapods from decahedral seeds is revealed. Aiming to excellent photocatalytic performance, CdS nanocrystals are controlled grown onto the sharp tips of AuCu tripods and pentapods. In addition, a carrier-selective blocking layer of Ag2S is introduced between AuCu and CdS, for achieving effective charge separation in AuCu-Ag2S-CdS nanohybrids. Through evaluating the photocatalytic performance by hydrogen generation experiments, the AuCu-Ag2S-CdS tripod nanocrystals exhibit an optimized hydrogen evolution rate of 2182 µmol·g-1·h-1. These findings will contribute greatly to the understanding of complex nanoparticle growth mechanism and provide a strategy for the design of anisotropic nanoalloys for widely photocatalytic applications.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy is a widely accepted method for diagnosing thyroid nodules. However, the influence of maximum diameter (MD) of ACR TIRADS 5 (TR5) thyroid nodules on the FNA outcomes remains debated. This study examined the influence of MD on the FNA outcomes and investigated the optimal MD threshold for FNA in TR5 nodules. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 280 TR5 thyroid nodules from 226 patients who underwent FNA from January to June 2022 in our department. Probably malignant (PM) group was defined as Bethesda V in cytopathology with confirmed BRAF V600E mutation or Bethesda VI, the other cytopathology outcomes were defined as probably benign (PB) group. We examined factors influencing malignant cytopathology outcomes and determined the optimal MD threshold for FNA in TR5 nodules using logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis. Results: Among these nodules, 58.2% (163/280) had PM outcomes. The PM group had a significantly larger MD than the PB group [6.5mm (range 5.0-8.4) vs. 5.3mm (range 4.0-7.0), p < 0.001]. In multivariate logistic regression fully adjusted for confounders, MD was significantly associated with PM outcomes [odds ratio 1.16, 95%CI 1.05-1.31; p = 0.042]. The highest quartile of MD had a greater likelihood of PM outcomes compared to the lowest quartile [odds ratio 4.71, 95% CI 1.97-11.69, p = 0.001]. The RCS analysis identified 6.2 mm as the optimal MD threshold for FNA in TR5 nodules. Conclusion: MD significantly affects the probability of malignant outcomes in FNA of TR5 thyroid nodules. A MD threshold of ≥6.2mm is suggested for FNA in these nodules.

ABSTRACT

Sialylation is an important modification of proteins, related to protein life and bioactivity. However, the evaluation of sialylation is only based on the average molecular composition by peptide mapping and glycan profiling because sialylated proteins are usually too heterogeneous to obtain good quality mass spectra by conventional intact mass analysis methods. In this study, a simple strong cation exchange-mass spectroscopy (SCX-MS) method was developed for intact mass analysis of sialylated glycoproteins. The developed SCX-MS method provided good separation for sialylated glycoproteins and had an inherent characteristic of native MS. Thus, the intact mass analysis of highly heterogeneous glycoprotein, which cannot be obtained by reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC)-MS and size exclusion chromatography (SEC)-MS methods, can be well analyzed using the current SCX-MS method. First, the method was developed and optimized using the etanercept monomer. Conditions including MS parameters, flow rate, and gradient were investigated. Then, the developed method was used to analyze a new recombinant vaccine, protein 1. Similar to the etanercept monomer, the intact molecular information of protein 1, which cannot be obtained by RPLC-MS and SEC-MS, can be achieved using SCX-MS. Combined with information obtained on peptide mapping and glycan profiles obtained by LC-MS, the new vaccine was well characterized. Finally, the SCX-MS method was used to quickly evaluate the batch-to-batch reproducibility of protein 1. It was much faster than peptide mapping and glycan profiling methods and can provide information complementary to these strategies. It should be useful for many applications where speed and comprehensive characterization are required, such as recombinant sialylated vaccines and fusion proteins.

ABSTRACT

Background Microwave ablation (MWA) is currently under preliminary investigation for the treatment of multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and has shown promising treatment efficacy. Compared with surgical resection (SR), MWA is minimally invasive and could preserve thyroid function. However, a comparative analysis between MWA and SR is warranted to draw definitive conclusions. Purpose To compare MWA and SR for preoperative US-detected T1N0M0 multifocal PTC in terms of overall and 1-, 3-, and 5-year progression-free survival rates and complication rates. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, 775 patients with preoperative US-detected T1N0M0 multifocal PTC treated with MWA or SR across 10 centers between May 2015 and December 2021 were included. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed for patients in the MWA and SR groups, followed by comparisons between the two groups. The primary outcomes were overall and 1-, 3-, and 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates and complication rates. Results After PSM, 229 patients (median age, 44 years [IQR 36.5-50.5 years]; 179 female) in the MWA group and 453 patients (median age, 45 years [IQR 37-53 years]; 367 female) in the SR group were observed for a median of 20 months (range, 12-74 months) and 26 months (range, 12-64 months), respectively. MWA resulted in less blood loss, shorter incision length, and shorter procedure and hospitalization durations (all P < .001). There was no evidence of differences in overall and 1-, 3-, or 5-year PFS rates (all P > .05) between MWA and SR (5-year rate, 77.2% vs 83.1%; P = .36) groups. Permanent hoarseness (2.2%, P = .05) and hypoparathyroidism (4.0%, P = .005) were encountered only in the SR group. Conclusion There was no evidence of a significant difference in PFS rates between MWA and SR for US-detected multifocal T1N0M0 PTC, and MWA resulted in fewer complications. Therefore, MWA is a feasible option for selected patients with multifocal T1N0M0 PTC. © RSNA, 2024 Supplemental material is available for this article. ABSTRACT

Heavy metal migration in soil poses a serious threat to the soil and groundwater. Understanding the migration pattern of heavy metals (HMs) under different factors could provide a more reasonable position for pollution evaluation and targetoriented treatment of soil heavy metal. In this study, the migration behavior of Pb and Cd in co-contaminated soil under different pH and ionic strength (NaCl concentration) was simulated using convective dispersion equation (CDE). We predicted the migration trends of Pb and Cd in soils after 5, 10, and 20 years via PHREEQC. The results showed that the migration time of Cd in the soil column experiment was about 60 days faster than that of Pb, and the migration trend was much steeper. The CDE was proved to describe the migration behavior of Pb and Cd (R2 > 0.75) in soil. The predicted results showed that Cd migrated to 15-20 cm of soil within 7 years and Pb stayed mainly in the top 0-6 cm of soil within 5 years as the duration of irrigation increased. Overall, our study is expected to provide new insight into the migration of heavy metal in soil ecosystems and guidance for reducing risk of heavy metal in the environment.

Recently, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskites have drawn more attention due to their excellent stability, although their efficiencies are still lower than those of 3D ones. Here we applied post-treatment of 2D perovskite GAMA5Pb5I16 (GA = guanidinium, MA = methylammonium) films with acetaminophen (AMP) to improve their performance. The efficiency of the solar cells with 2 mg/mL AMP post-treatment increased to 18.01% from 16.72% for those without post-treatment. The efficiency improvement results from the enlarged grain size, reduced trap state density, and better energy level matching after AMP post-treatment. In addition, the stability of the solar cells is improved. The solar cells with AMP post-treatment maintain 91% of the original power conversion efficiency value after aging for 30 days in the atmosphere. This work opens a new approach for the efficiency and stability enhancement of quasi-2D PSCs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the complications associated with microwave ablation (MWA) in treating persistent/recurrent hyperparathyroidism (HPT) post-surgical or ablative treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2015 to December 2022, 87 persistent/recurrent HPT patients (primary HPT [PHPT]: secondary HPT [SHPT] = 13:74) who underwent MWA after surgical or ablative treatment were studied. Grouping was based on ablation order (initial vs. re-MWA), prior treatment (parathyroidectomy [PTX] vs. MWA), and etiology (PHPT vs. SHPT). The study focused on documenting and comparing treatment complications and analyzing major complication risk factors. RESULT: Among the 87 patients, the overall complication rate was 17.6% (15/87), with major complications at 13.8% (12/87) and minor complications at 3.4% (3/87). Major complications included recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) palsy (12.6%) and Horner syndrome (1.1%), while minor complications were limited to hematoma (3.4%). Severe hypocalcemia noted in 21.6% of SHPT patients. No significant differences in major complication rates were observed between initial and re-MWA groups (10.7% vs. 13.8%, p = 0.455), PTX and MWA groups (12.5% vs. 15.4%, p = 0.770), or PHPT and SHPT groups (15.4% vs. 13.5%, p > 0.999). Risk factors for RLN palsy included ablation of superior and large parathyroid glands (>1.7 cm). All patients recovered spontaneously except for one with permanent RLN palsy in the PTX group (2.1%). CONCLUSION: Complication rates for MWA post-surgical or ablative treatments were comparable to initial MWA rates. Most complications were transient, indicating MWA as a viable and safe treatment option for persistent/recurrent HPT patients.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the feasibility, efficiency, and safety of microwave ablation (MWA) for multifocal papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). METHODS: This was a retrospective study, and the data of patients who underwent MWA for multifocal PTMC from October 2016 to December 2021 were reviewed. After ablation, the changes in tumor size and volume, as well as the rates of technical success, tumor disappearance, disease progression, and complications, were assessed. According to the tumor location, the cases were further divided into a unilateral multifocal disease (UMD) subgroup and a bilateral multifocal disease (BMD) subgroup. Further analyses were carried out. RESULTS: There was a total of 94 cases enrolled in the present study, which included 24 males and 70 females. The median age was 40 years (22-66 years); the median follow-up time was 14 months (6-48 months). Complete ablation was achieved in all enrolled cases. Therefore, the technical success rate was 100%. Due to expanding ablation, the MD and volume of the ablation zone increased at the 1st and 3rd months after ablation and decreased from the 12th month after ablation (p < 0.05 for all). The total complete tumor disappearance rates were 45/94 (47.87%) overall, 40.625% (13/32) in the UMD subgroup and 51.61% (32/62) in the BMD subgroup (p = 0.312). The total disease progression rates were 4.26% (4/94) overall, 6.25% (2/32) in the UMD subgroup and 3.23% (2/62) in the BMD subgroup (p = 0.881). The overall complication rate was 4.26% (4/94). CONCLUSION: This preliminary study indicates that MWA is a safe and effective treatment for multifocal PTMC.

ABSTRACT

Uridine-disphosphate glucuronosyltransferase 1A9 (UGT1A9), an important detoxification and inactivation enzyme for toxicants, regulates the exposure level of environmental pollutants in the human body and induces various toxicological consequences. However, an effective tool for high-throughput monitoring of UGT1A9 function under exposure to environmental pollutants is still lacking. In this study, 1,3-dichloro-7-hydroxy-9,9-dimethylacridin-2(9H)-one (DDAO) was found to exhibit excellent specificity and high affinity towards human UGT1A9. Remarkable changes in absorption and fluorescence signals after reacting with UGT1A9 were observed, due to the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism. Importantly, DDAO was successfully applied to monitor the biological functions of UGT1A9 in response to environmental pollutant exposure not only in microsome samples, but also in living cells by using a high-throughput screening method. Meanwhile, the identified pollutants that disturb UGT1A9 functions were found to significantly influence the exposure level and retention time of bisphenol S/bisphenol A in living cells. Furthermore, the molecular mechanism underlying the inhibition of UGT1A9 by these pollutant-derived disruptors was elucidated by molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations. Collectively, a fluorescent probe to characterize the responses of UGT1A9 towards environmental pollutants was developed, which was beneficial for elucidating the health hazards of environmental pollutants from a new perspective.

ABSTRACT

Methyl formate (MF) is one of the most important chemical commodities, which has a wide range of applications. Due to environmental friendliness, mild reaction conditions, and easy operations, electrosynthesis of MF has garnered increasing attention in recent years. In this work, we reported an electrosynthesis route toward MF in a halide-containing methanol solution. The thorough mechanistic investigations point out that electrosynthesis of MF is accomplished by instant reaction between aldehyde from anodic methanol oxidation, and methoxy bromide (CH3OBr) that is in-situ generated by reaction of Br2 from anodic oxidation of Br- with methoxide (CH3O-) from cathodic reduction of methanol. This method features high atomic economy only producing valuable MF and hydrogen gas, and shows distinct advantages compared to the reported MF electrosynthesis methods. Even at 200 mA/cm2, the faradaic efficiency (FE) of MF remains consistently around 60 % at the anode while a 100 % FE hydrogen gas is produced at the cathode.

ABSTRACT

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide into energy-carrying compounds or value-added chemicals is of great significance for diminishing the greenhouse effect. However, it is still imperative to replace the less-value anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to improve the technical economy. Herein, we firstly reported a bifunctional CuS/TiO2 catalyst for both anodic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and cathodic carbon dioxide reduction (CO2R). The in-built abundant CuS/TiO2 heterointerfaces are found to boost the CO2R and MOR to produce formate. Based on the unique bifunctionality of CuS/TiO2, a paired electrosynthesis of formate was performed with a total Faradaic efficiency (FE) of about 170 %, in which the cathodic CO2R achieved a formate FE of about 70 %, and the anodic MOR exhibited an almost 100 % formate FE.

ABSTRACT

Background: The relationship between the impacted mandibular third molar (IMTM) and the external root re-sorption (ERR) of the mandibular second molar (MSM) was analysed with cone-beam computed tomography(CBCT). The risk factors affecting the ERR of the MSM were examined to provide a reference.Material and Methods: A total of 327 patients (total: 578 teeth) admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of YanbianUniversity for IMTM extraction from January 2017 to December 2019 was chosen and divided according togender and age. The correlation between the IMTM and ERR of MSM was analysed, including inclination angle,impaction direction and depth. The relationship of mandibular ascending ramus classification with ERR of MSMwas also analysed. In addition, the correlation between the MTM impaction type and the severity of ERR wasanalysed.Results: The incidence of ERR of MSM in male patients was higher than in females (27.9% vs.17.6%, p = 0.018).The occurrence and the site of ERR showed statistical differences in the inclination angle [(≤20°, 3.6%) vs. (21°-40°, 27.1%) vs. (41°-60°, 27.6%) vs. (61°-80°, 25.6%) vs. (>80°, 31.7%), p <0.001], impaction direction [(Vertical,1.1%) vs. (Mesial, 32.7%) vs. (Horizontal, 25.3%), p <0.001] and depth of MTM [(Low position, 38.6%) vs. (Medi-an position, 32.0%) vs. (High position, 13.7%), p <0.001]. Also, there was a significant difference in the mandib-ular ascending ramus type [(Class I, 17.4%) vs. (Class II, 32.3%) vs. (Class III, 44.9%), p <0.001]. In addition, theseverity of ERR showed statistical differences in the mesial (40.9%, p<0.05), lower impaction (54.5%, p<0.05)depth of MTM and type III of mandibular ascending ramus (63.6%, p<0.05).Conclusions: The inclination angle, impaction direction, and depth of MTM were the influencing factors for theoccurrence and site of ERR.(AU)

Three unusual ajmaline-macroline type bisindole alkaloids, alsmaphylines A-C, together with their postulated biogenetic precursors, were isolated from the stem barks and leaves of Alstonia macrophylla via the building blocks-based molecular network (BBMN) strategy. Alsmaphyline A represents a rare ajmaline-macroline type bisindole alkaloid with an S-shape polycyclic ring system. Alsmaphylines B and C are two novel ajmaline-macroline type bisindole alkaloids with N-1-C-21' linkages, and the former possesses an unconventional stacked conformation due to the presence of intramolecular noncovalent interactions. The chemical structures including absolute configurations of alsmaphylines A-C were established by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. In addition, a plausible biosynthetic pathway of these bisindole alkaloids as well as their ability to promote the protein synthesis on HT22 cells were discussed.

Insect chitinases have been proposed as potential targets for pest control. In this work, a novel group IV chitinase gene, MdCht9, from Musca domestica was found to have multiple functions in the physiological activity, including chitin regulation, development and antifungal immunity. The MdCht9 gene was cloned and sequenced, its phylogeny was analysed and its expression was determined in normal and 20E treated larvae. Subsequently, RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated MdCht9 knockdown was performed, followed by biochemical assays, morphological observations and transcriptome analysis. Finally, the recombinant protein MdCht9 (rMdCht9) was purified and tested for anti-microbial activity and enzyme characteristics. The results showed that MdCht9 consists of three domains, highly expressed in a larval salivary gland. RNAi silencing of MdCht9 resulted in significant down-regulation of chitin content and expression of 15 chitin-binding protein (CBP) genes, implying a new insight that MdCht9 might regulate chitin content by influencing the expression of CBPs. In addition, more than half of the lethality and partial wing deformity appeared due to the dsMdCht9 treatment. In addition, the rMdCht9 exhibited anti-microbial activity towards Candida albicans (fungus) but not towards Escherichia coli (G-) or Staphylococcus aureus (G+). Our work expands on previous studies of chitinase while providing a potential target for pest management.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Inulae Herba (IH) is known as Jinfeicao recorded in Chinese Pharmacopoeia with effects of lowering qi and eliminating phlegm, and used for the treatment of pulmonary diseases. However, its protective mechanism on pulmonary diseases, especially acute lung injury (ALI), is still undefined. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to explore anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation effects of IH and its underlying mechanism for treating ALI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We constructed a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-ALI mouse model to reveal the therapeutical effect of IH. Western blot, real-time quantitative PCR, flow cytometry, small RNA interference, immunohistochemical staining, and the dual-luciferase experiment were performed to study the mechanism of IH for treating ALI. RESULTS: IH attenuated LPS-mediated pathological changes (e.g. pneumonedema and pulmonary congestion) through inactivation of macrophages in an ALI mouse model. The result of flow cytometry demonstrated that IH regulated the homeostasis of M1 (CD80+CD206-) and M2 (CD80+CD206+) phenotype macrophages. Furthermore, IH suppressed mRNA expressions of M1 phenotype markers, such as iNOS and IL-6, whereas promoted mRNA expressions of M2 phenotype markers, such as ARG1 and RETNLA in LPS-mediated mice. Notably, IH targeted Keap1 to activate the Nrf2 receptor, exerting its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidation effects proved by using immunohistochemical staining, dual-luciferase, and Keap1 knockdown technologies. CONCLUSION: These findings suggested that targeting Keap1 with IH alleviated LPS-mediated ALI, and it could serve as a herbal agent for developing anti-ALI drugs.

ABSTRACT

Tumor-initiating cells (TICs) reprogram their metabolic features to meet their bioenergetic, biosynthetic, and redox demands. Our previous study established a role for wild-type isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1WT) as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but how IDH1WT modulates NSCLC progression remains elusive. Here, we report that IDH1WT activates serine biosynthesis by enhancing the expression of phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PHGDH) and phosphoserine aminotransferase 1 (PSAT1), the first and second enzymes of de novo serine synthetic pathway. Augmented serine synthesis leads to GSH/ROS imbalance and supports pyrimidine biosynthesis, maintaining tumor initiation capacity and enhancing gemcitabine chemoresistance. Mechanistically, we identify that IDH1WT interacts with and stabilizes PHGDH and fragile X-related protein-1 (FXR1) by impeding their association with the E3 ubiquitin ligase parkin by coimmunoprecipitation assay and proximity ligation assay. Subsequently, stabilized FXR1 supports PSAT1 mRNA stability and translation, as determined by actinomycin D chase experiment and in vitro translation assay. Disrupting IDH1WT-PHGDH and IDH1WT-FXR1 interactions synergistically reduces NSCLC stemness and sensitizes NSCLC cells to gemcitabine and serine/glycine-depleted diet therapy in lung cancer xenograft models. Collectively, our findings offer insights into the role of IDH1WT in serine metabolism, highlighting IDH1WT as a potential therapeutic target for eradicating TICs and overcoming gemcitabine chemoresistance in NSCLC.

ABSTRACT

Heterocrystals consisting of multiple species have received wide attention owing to the advantage of the cooperative effect contributed by different functional counterparts; therefore, a controlled growth strategy is highly desired. Herein, we report an effective method to synthesize dumbbell-like Au-PtCu solid and hollow nanorods, regulated by the unique surface capping and oxidation etching roles of copper ions. Dumbbell-like nanorods are prepared through site-selective co-deposition of platinum and copper on both tips of gold nanorods assisted by the capping effect of the CTAB-Cu+ complex to passivate the side surface. On the other hand, hollow dumbbell-like Au-PtCu nanorods are formed through triggering the etching effect of copper ions by increasing the reaction temperature to 80 °C. The manipulation of the morphology and extinction properties of the trimetallic Au-PtCu nanorods is demonstrated by adjusting the concentration of copper ions. Under excitation with a near-infrared 808 nm laser, the dumbbell-like Au-PtCu nanorods show excellent photothermal conversion, with a 3.1 times temperature increment (ΔT) compared to bare Au nanorods, while the hollow dumbbell-like Au-PtCu NRs demonstrate improved photocatalytic activity under xenon lamp irradiation.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with T1N0M0 papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) who underwent microwave ablation (MWA) and those who underwent total thyroidectomy (TT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From February 2018 to February 2022, 180 T1N0M0 PTC patients were enrolled in present study, including 90 in the MWA group and 90 in the TT group, respectively. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and Thyroid Cancer-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire (THYCA-QoL) were completed by patients to evaluate their HRQoL scores. RESULTS: According to the results of the EORTC-QLQ-C30, there was a significant difference in the scores of global health, physical, emotional, etc. between the two groups, which indicated that the quality of life in these items in the MWA group was better than those in the TT group (all p < 0.05). According to the results of the THYCA-QoL, all items had significant differences between the two groups except for headache, which demonstrated the thyroid-specific quality of life was higher in the MWA group than in the TT group (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Ultrasound (US)-guided MWA offers a significant advantage in HRQoL over TT in T1N0M0 PTC patients, which provides an important reference for MWA as an alternative strategy to TT.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To study the safety of improved hydrodissection based on the periparathyroidal fascial space during microwave ablation (MWA) for secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from 337 patients (162 males and 175 females; mean age, 50.8 ± 12.8 [range, 16-84] years) who underwent MWA for SHPT were retrospectively reviewed. Among them, 177 patients underwent traditional hydrodissection (traditional group) and 160 patients underwent improved hydrodissection based on periparathyroidal fascial spaces (improved group). Safety enhancement was analyzed by comparing the complications between the two groups. The characteristics of the hydrodissected fascial spaces, complications, and the follow-up results were recorded. The baseline data, clinical parameters, laboratory indices and characteristics of SHPT lesions were analyzed to assess the risk factors associated with hoarseness. RESULTS: Hydrodissection was successfully performed in all the enrolled patients according to the protocol. Six periparathyroid fascial spaces were hydrodissected, depending on the location of the SHPT lesions. The incidence of hoarseness due to recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, the most common complication of thermal ablation for SHPT lesions, was lower in the improved group than in the traditional group (6.9% vs. 13.0%, p = 0.044). The median hoarseness recovery time in the improved group was shorter than that in the traditional group (2 vs. 6 months, p < 0.001). There was no difference in technical efficiency between the two groups (improved group vs. traditional group: 75.0% vs. 70.6%; p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with traditional hydrodissection, improved hydrodissection based on periparathyroidal fascial spaces could enhance safety during MWA for SHPT.

ABSTRACT

The genus Trigonotis comprises nearly 60 species mainly distributed in East and Southeast Asia. China has the largest number of Trigonotis species in the world, with a total of 44 species, of which 38 are endemic. Nutlet morphology is useful for the taxonomic delimitation of Trigonotis. However, there are still controversial circumscriptions of nutlet shape in some species. In previous studies, interspecies phylogenetic relationships were inferred using few DNA markers and very few taxa, which possibly led to erroneous or incomplete conclusions. In this study, the nutlet morphology of 39 Trigonotis taxa and the characteristics of 34 complete chloroplast genomes (29 taxa) were investigated and analyzed. Then, the phylogenetic relationships were discussed within this genus based on complete chloroplast genomes. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first comprehensive analysis of nutlet morphology and complete chloroplast genome of Trigonotis. Based on nutlet morphology, Trigonotis can be divided into two groups: Group 1, hemispherical or oblique tetrahedron with carpopodiums, and Group 2, inverted tetrahedron without carpopodiums. The chloroplast genome of Trigonotis exhibited a typical quadripartite structure, including 84-86 protein-coding, 37 transfer RNA, and 8 ribosomal RNA genes, with a total length of 147,247-148,986 bp. Genes in the junctions were well conserved in Trigonotis, similar to those in other Boraginaceae s.str. species. Furthermore, Trigonotis chloroplast genomes showed relatively high diversity, with more conserved genic regions than intergenic regions; in addition, we detected 14 hot spots (Pi > 0.005) in non-coding regions. Phylogenetic analyses based on chloroplast genome data identified highly resolved relationships between Trigonotis species. Specifically, Trigonotis was divided into two clades with strong support: one clade included species with hemispherical or oblique tetrahedron nutlets with carpopodiums and bracts, whereas the other clade included species with inverted tetrahedron nutlets without carpopodiums or bracts. Our results may inform future taxonomic, phylogenetic, and evolutionary studies on Boraginaceae.
