ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is amid an ongoing pandemic. It has been shown that patients with cardiovascular comorbidities are at higher risk of severe illness of COVID-19. AIM: To find out the relationship between cardiovascular comorbidities and severe illness of COVID-19. METHODS: The clinical data of 140 COVID-19 patients treated from January 22, 2020 to March 3, 2020 at our hospital were retrospectively collected. The clinical characteristics were compared between patients with mild illness and those with severe illness. RESULTS: There were 75 male patients and 65 female patients (53.6% vs 46.4%). The mean age was 45.4 ± 14.6 years (range, 2-85 years). Most of the patients had mild illness (n = 114, 81.4%) and 26 patients had severe illness (18.6%). The most common symptom was fever (n = 110, 78.6%), followed by cough (n = 82, 58.6%) and expectoration (n = 51, 36.4%). Eight patients were asymptomatic but were positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 RNA. Patients with severe illness were significantly more likely to be hypertensive than those with mild illness [(10/26, 38.4%) vs (22/114, 19.3%), P = 0.036]. The levels of lactate dehydrogenase were significantly higher in the severe illness group than in the mild illness group (299.35 ± 68.82 vs 202.94 ± 63.87, P < 0.001). No patient died in either the severe illness or the mild illness group. CONCLUSION: Hypertension and elevated levels of lactate dehydrogenase may be associated with severe illness of COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

Catalytic decomposition of sucrose by acid invertases (AINVs) under acidic conditions plays an important role in the development of sink organs in plants. To reveal the function of AINVs in the development of pepper fruits, nine AINV genes of pepper were identified. Protein sequencing and phylogenetic analysis revealed that the CaAINV family may be divided into cell wall invertases (CaCWINV1⁻7) and vacuolar invertases (CaVINV1⁻2). CaAINVs contain conserved regions and protein structures typical of the AINVs in other plants. Gene expression profiling indicated that CaCWINV2 and CaVINV1 were highly expressed in reproductive organs but differed in expression pattern. CaCWINV2 was mainly expressed in buds and flowers, while CaVINV1 was expressed in developmental stages, such as the post-breaker stage. Furthermore, invertase activity of CaCWINV2 and CaVINV1 was identified via functional complementation in an invertase-deficient yeast. Optimum pH for CaCWINV2 and CaVINV1 was found to be 4.0 and 4.5, respectively. Gene expression and enzymatic activity of CaCWINV2 and CaVINV1 indicate that these AINV enzymes may be pivotal for sucrose hydrolysis in the reproductive organs of pepper.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Guangxi is the province most seriously affected by rabies virus (RABV) in China. Those most affected by RABV each year are people in rural areas, where dogs are the main cause of human infection with the virus. METHODS: In this study, we established a rabies vaccination demonstration program that included eradication, core, and peripheral areas. This program was implemented for 9 years and comprised three stages: 12 counties in the first stage (2008-2010), 21 counties in the second stage (2011-2013), and then extending to all counties of Guangxi Province in the third stage (2014-2016). The program included a dog vaccination campaign, surveillance of clinically healthy dogs who may be potential RABV carriers, monitoring anti-RABV antibody titers in vaccinated dogs, and compiling and reporting statistics of human rabies cases. RESULTS: The target effectiveness was achieved in the eradication, core, and peripheral areas in all three stages. The vaccination demonstration program successfully promoted RABV vaccination of domestic dogs throughout Guangxi Province by drawing upon the experience gained at key points. Compared with a vaccination coverage rate of 39.42-46.85% in Guangxi Province overall during 2003-2007, this rate gradually increased to 48.98-52.67% in 2008-2010, 60.24-69.67% in 2011-2013, and 70.09-71.53% in 2014-2016, thereby meeting World Health Organization requirements. The total cases of human rabies in the province decreased from 602 in 2004 to 41 cases in 2017. CONCLUSIONS: The present pilot vaccination program obviously increased the rabies vaccination and seroconversion rates, and effectively reduced the spread of rabies from dogs to humans as well as the number of human rabies cases, thus successfully controlling rabies in Guangxi.

ABSTRACT

Alkaline/neutral invertase (NINV) proteins irreversibly cleave sucrose into fructose and glucose, and play important roles in carbohydrate metabolism and plant development. To investigate the role of NINVs in the development of pepper fruits, seven NINV genes (CaNINV1-7) were identified. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the CaNINV family could be divided into α and ß groups. CaNINV1-6 had typical conserved regions and similar protein structures to the NINVs of other plants, while CaNINV7 lacked amino acid sequences at the C-terminus and N-terminus ends. An expression analysis of the CaNINV genes in different tissues demonstrated that CaNINV5 is the dominant NINV in all the examined tissues (root, stem, leaf, bud, flower, and developmental pepper fruits stage). Notably, the expression of CaNINV5 was found to gradually increase at the pre-breaker stages, followed by a decrease at the breaker stages, while it maintained a low level at the post-breaker stages. Furthermore, the invertase activity of CaNINV5 was identified by functional complementation of the invertase-deficient yeast strain SEY2102, and the optimum pH of CaNINV5 was found to be ~7.5. The gene expression and enzymatic activity of CaNINV5 suggest that it might be the main NINV enzyme for hydrolysis of sucrose during pepper fruit development.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the effect of 1 800 MHz electromagnetic radiation on activity of SOD and GSH-Px in the skin tissues of SD rats. Methods A total of 98 healthy SD rats with SPF level, aged 4 weeks, were randomly divided into radiation group and control group. The radiation group was totally exposed under 1 800 MHz electromagnetic wave with seven different power density of radiation of 0.1 mW/cm2,0.3 mW/cm2,0.5 mW/cm2 , 0.7 mW/cm2, 0.9 mW/cm2, 1.0 mW/cm2and 1.2 mW/cm2respectively.It lasted 21 days and for a period of 12 hours a day. After radiation, the activity of SOD and GSH-Px in the skin tissues were detected by enzyme marker. Results In radiation group, the activity of SOD and GSH-Px in the skin tissues of SD rats were decreased under 0.3 mW/cm2and 0.5 mW/cm21 800 MHz electromagnetic wave. Compared with the control group, there was a significantly difference in radiation group (P<0.05) .While under other four 1 800 MHz electromagnetic waves, the activity of GSH-Px and SOD in the skin tissues showed no statistical difference between the two groups (P>0.05) . Under 1 mW/cm21 800 MHz electromagnetic wave, the activity of GSH-Px showed no statistical difference between two groups (P>0.05) . Conclusion The power density of 0.3 mW/cm2and 0.5 mW/cm21 800 MHz electromagnetic wave can reduce the activity of GSH-Px and SOD in the skin tissues of rats.

ABSTRACT

The Indian pepper 'Guijiangwang' (Capsicum frutescens L.), one of the world's hottest chili peppers, is rich in capsaicinoids. The accumulation of the alkaloid capsaicin and its analogs in the epidermal cells of the placenta contribute to the pungency of Capsicum fruits. To identify putative genes involved in capsaicin biosynthesis, RNA-Seq was used to analyze the pepper's expression profiles over five developmental stages. Five cDNA libraries were constructed from the total RNA of placental tissue and sequenced using an Illumina HiSeq 2000. More than 19 million clean reads were obtained from each library, and greater than 50% of the reads were assignable to reference genes. Digital gene expression (DGE) profile analysis using Solexa sequencing was performed at five fruit developmental stages and resulted in the identification of 135 genes of known function; their expression patterns were compared to the capsaicin accumulation pattern. Ten genes of known function were identified as most likely to be involved in regulating capsaicin synthesis. Additionally, 20 new candidate genes were identified related to capsaicin synthesis. We use a combination of RNA-Seq and DGE analyses to contribute to the understanding of the biosynthetic regulatory mechanism(s) of secondary metabolites in a nonmodel plant and to identify candidate enzyme-encoding genes.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the morphological change of masseter after the mandibular angle osteotomy.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Computerized tomography (CT) examination was performed on 120 patients treated by mandibular angle osteotomy before operation and at 3, 6, 12 months after operation, respectively. The pre- and postoperative masseter muscle thickness and cross-sectional area were evaluated using 3D CT images observed from 3 selected slice planes, which were paralleled with Frankfurt horizontal plane. These CT images were stored and three-dimensional reconstruction were made for calculation of masseter muscle volume through software.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>After operation, the reduction of the masseter muscle volume and cross-sectional area was seen. The volume of the masseter at 3, 6, 12 months postoperatively decreased to 82.02%, 77.00% and 80.43% (P < 0.05). The cross-sectional area at 3, 6,12 months postoperatively decreased to 85.81%, 78.86% and 81.56% at A plane, 80.94%, 75.03% and 77.04% at B plane, and reached to 13.46%, 11.48% and 13.89% at C plane (P < 0.05, P < 0.05, P < 0.01). The masseter thickness after operation was significantly different from that before operation during the follow-up period, but not at 12 months after operation at A plane.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The masseter atrophy happens spontaneously after mandibular angle osteotomy, especially at the region of mandibular angle. It should be considered during surgical design.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the association between job stress (effort-reward imbalance model)and blood lipids among university staff in Yunnan province.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1244 university staff in Yunnan province. The job stress was measured by the validated Chinese self-reported Effort-Reward Imbalance Questionnaire (ERI). Blood lipids were measured in all participated staff members.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>After adjustment for relevant confounding factors, it was found that the risk of increased serum triglyceride was 3.5 folds higher in male staffs with high extrinsic effort compared those with low extrinsic effort (OR = 3.45, 95%CI: 1.32 - 9.04) while the risk of increased serum low density lipoprotein-cholesterol was 2.9 folds higher in male staffs with high overcommitment compared those with low overcommitment (OR = 2.86, 95%CI: 1.03 - 7.96). The risk of elevated serum triglyceride increased in proportion to increasing job stress: 3.5 folds increase in male staffs with moderate job stress (OR = 3.43, 95%CI: 1.24 - 9.53) and 4 folds increase in male staffs with high job stress (OR = 4.16, 95%CI: 1.42 - 12.17) compared those with low job stress. However, there was no significant association between job stress and lipid profile in female staffs.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Our results show that job stress (effort-reward imbalance) is positively associated with abnormal blood lipids in male university staffs.</p>

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To review our experience in surgical treatment of 326 cases of thoracic esophageal carcinoma. METHODS: The clinical data of 326 patients with thoracic esophageal carcinoma from January 1990 to January 2001 were analyzed retrospectively. Among the 326 patients, the lesions of 32 patients were identified in the upper thoracic segment of the esophagus, and were found in the middle segment in 213 cases with the left 81 cases having lesions in the lower segment. Left cervical esophagogastrostomy was performed through triple incision (left cervical, right thoracic and abdominal) in 79 cases. Esophagocolostomy through triple incision was performed in 5 cases. Another 156 patients received left cervical esophagogastrostomy through two incisions (left cervical and left thoracic). Supra-aorticarch esophagogastrostomy through left posterola- teral thoracotomy was performed in 53 cases, and sub-arch esophagogastrostomy through left posterolateral thoracotomy in 33 cases. RESULTS: The post-operative mortality was 1.23% (4/326), with a five-year survival rate of 35.3%. CONCLUSION: Subtotal esophagectomy combined with thorough lymph node dissection can be the first choice for thoracic esophageal carcinoma to improve the postoperative survival rate and the quality-of life-of the patients.
