ABSTRACT

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have found extensive application in the biomedical domain due to their enhanced biocompatibility, minimal toxicity, and strong magnetic responsiveness. MNPs exhibit great potential as nanomaterials in various biomedical applications, including disease detection and cancer therapy. Typically, MNPs consist of a magnetic core surrounded by surface modification coatings, such as inorganic materials, organic molecules, and polymers, forming a nucleoshell structure that mitigates nanoparticle agglomeration and enhances targeting capabilities. Consequently, MNPs exhibit magnetic responsiveness in vivo for transportation and therapeutic effects, such as enhancing medical imaging resolution and localized heating at the site of injury. MNPs are utilized for specimen purification through targeted binding and magnetic separation in vitro, thereby optimizing efficiency and expediting the process. This review delves into the distinctive functional characteristics of MNPs as well as the diverse bioactive molecules employed in their surface coatings and their corresponding functionalities. Additionally, the advancement of MNPs in various applications is outlined. Additionally, we discuss the advancements of magnetic nanoparticles in medical imaging, disease treatment, and in vitro assays, and we anticipate the future development prospects and obstacles in this field. The objective is to furnish readers with a thorough comprehension of the recent practical utilization of MNPs in biomedical disciplines.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens D1 (B. amyloliquefaciens D1) on growth performance, serum anti-inflammatory cytokines, and intestinal microbiota composition and diversity in bearded chickens. To investigate the effects of Bacillus amyloliquefaciensa and fermented soy milk, 7-day-old broilers were orally fed different doses of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens D1 fermented soy milk for 35 days, with the unfermented soy milk group as the Placebo group. This study found that B. amyloliquefaciens D1 fermented soy milk improved the intestinal microbiota of broilers, significantly increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria and decreasing the abundance of harmful bacteria in the gut. B. amyloliquefaciens D1 fermented soy milk also significantly reduced the serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS) content. The body weight and daily weight gain of broilers were increased. In conclusion, the results of this study are promising and indicate that supplementing the diets of bearded chickens with B. amyloliquefaciens D1 fermented soy milk has many beneficial effects in terms of maintaining intestinal microbiota balance and reducing inflammation in chickens.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens D1, with a notably high production of neutral protease, was isolated from Morchella crassipes. The protease was purified to 10.4-fold with a specific activity of 4542.9 U/mg and 2.7% recovery. The enzyme was purified by 70% (NH4)2SO4 and DEAE-Cellulose-52 column. The estimated molecular mass of the purified protease obtained by SDS-PAGE was approximately 40 kDa. The enzyme was optimally active at pH 6.0 and 50 °C. Furthermore, the maximum hydrolysis rate (Vmax) and apparent Michaelis-Menten constant (Km) values of the purified protease were 8.2 mg/mL and 65.7 µg/(min mL). The enzymatic properties and rapid and efficient purification of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens D1 provide the basis for its potential commercialization and industrial development. Moreover, more essential amino acids, such as isoleucine, leucine, and phenylalanine, would be released when the strain fermented soybean milk, and then a better amino acid profile would be formed in soybean milk. Results suggest that this strain exhibits great potential in fermented soybean milk, and the enzyme could lay a foundation for its industrial application and further research.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The aroma-producing strain of Geotrichum candidum GDMCC60675 was taken as the research object, the composition of aroma-producing substances of G. candidum was studied, and the target strains of G. candidum suitable for food additives were screened out by mutagenesis. Methods: Mutants were obtained by space breeding. The colony morphology and cell morphology of the mutant strain were identified, the phylogenetic tree of the two strains was constructed, and the whole-genome sequences of the wild strain and the mutant strain were compared. The aroma components and key odor compounds of the two strains were analyzed and compared by HS-SPME-GC-MS and E-nose detection, and the data were processed by using the relative odor activity value (ROAV) analysis method. Results: A mutant strain of G. candidum was found with different characteristics of aroma production compared with wild-type G. candidum. It was found that its colony morphology and cell morphology were similar. However, it was found that the aroma-producing substances produced by the two strains were different, and the key difference compound was phenyl ethyl alcohol, which also proved that the two strains were different, and the main aroma note was different.

ABSTRACT

Kefir consists of a large number of probiotics, which can regulate or shape the balance of intestinal microbiota, and enhance the host's immune response. Kefir microbiota can shape the mucosal immunity of the body through SCFAs, EPS, polypeptides, lactic acid, and other metabolites and microbial antigens themselves, and this shaping may have time windows and specific pathways. Kefir can regulate antibody SIgA and IL-10 levels to maintain intestinal homeostasis, and its secreted SIgA can shape the stable microbiota system by wrapping and binding different classes of microorganisms. The incidence of intestinal inflammation is closely linked to the development and maturation of intestinal mucosal immunity. Based on summarizing the existing research results on Kefir, its metabolites, and immune system development, this paper proposes to use Kefir, traditional fermented food with natural immune-enhancing components and stable functional microbiota, as an intervention method. Early intervention in the immune system may seize the critical window period of mucosal immunity and stimulate the development and maturation of intestinal mucosal immunity in time.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical efficacy and possible mechanism of warming acupuncture combined with "three steps and seven methods" of tuina and simple "three steps and seven methods" of tuina in treatment of chronic nonspecific low back pain (NLBP) of yang deficiency and cold-dampness blockage. METHODS: A total of 138 patients were randomized into an observation group (69 cases, 5 cases dropped off) and a control group (69 cases, 7 cases dropped off). In the control group, "three steps and seven methods" of tuina was applied. On the basis of the treatment in the control group, warming acupuncture was applied at Shenshu (BL 23), Yaoyangguan (GV 3), Mingmen (GV 4), Weizhong (BL 40) and ashi points. The treatment was given once a day, 6 times a week for 3 weeks in both groups. Before and after treatment, the short form of McGill pain questionnaire (SF-MPQ) score, Oswestry disability index (ODI) score, finger-to-floor distance (FFD), Schober test distance, fear-avoidance beliefs questionnaire (FABQ) score and yang deficiency and cold-dampness blockage score were observed, the serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6 and thromboxane B2 (TXB2) were detected in both groups. The recurrence rate was evaluated in follow-up of 6 months after treatment. RESULTS: After treatment, the scores of PRI, PPI, VAS, ODI, FABQ and FFD, yang deficiency and cold-dampness blockage scores were decreased compared before treatment in both groups (P<0.01), and those in the observation group were lower than the control group (P<0.01); the Schober test distances were increased compared before treatment in both groups (P<0.01), and that in the observation group was larger than the control group (P<0.01). After treatment, the serum levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6 and TXB2 were decreased compared before treatment in both groups (P<0.01), and those in the observation group were lower than the control group (P<0.01). In follow-up, the recurrence rate was 12.8% (6/47) in the observation group, which was lower than 34.3% (12/35) in the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Warming acupuncture combined with "three steps and seven methods" of tuina can effectively alleviate pain in patients with chronic NLBP of yang deficiency and cold-dampness blockage, improve activity and dysfunction of waist, the clinical efficacy is superior to simple "three steps and seven methods" of tuina, its mechanism may be relate to the inhibition of inflammatory reaction.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The postural stability is a major factor that helps prevent developing knee osteoarthritis with aging. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Baduanjin qigong on postural control and physical function in older adults with knee osteoarthritis. METHODS: Fifty-six individuals over 60 years of age with knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n = 28) or a control group (n = 28). Participants in the experimental group received a 12-week Baduanjin training, while those in the control group did not receive any additional physical exercise during the study period. The postural control was quantified by perimeter and ellipse area of center of pressure movement trajectory. The assessments were conducted three times (baseline, week 8, and week 12). RESULTS: The perimeter and ellipse area with both open- and closed-eyes conditions and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) function were significantly improved at week eight in the experimental group (p < 0.005). The ellipse area with open-eyes condition, WOMAC index, and stiffness and physical function domains were significantly decreased after the 12 weeks of Baduanjin training compared to the control group (p < 0.005). Only the perimeter area with both open- and closed-eyes conditions was not statistically significant at week 12 in the intervention group (p > 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Baduanjin is an effective and adjuvant therapy for older adults with knee osteoarthritis. Regular Baduanjin training can improve postural control and WOMAC function of old individuals with knee osteoarthritis. More advanced techniques and biopsychological measurements are required for further understanding of Baduanjin exercise in this population. The trial was registered in Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR-IOR-16010042).

In the present study, we demonstrate that the degeneration of intervertebral discs is caused by ageing and apoptosis of matrix cells. Apoptosis is as essential as the function of proteoglycan synthesis in assessing the possible degeneration of intervertebral discs; paeoniflorin (PF) induces cytoprotective effects on various types of cells. In this study, the function of PF in inhibiting Fas ligand (FasL)-induced apoptosis in annulus fibrosus cells was assessed, and the correlation between apoptosis and the Fas-FasL pathway was determined. Annulus fibrosus cells were derived from the intervertebral discs of 1-month-old Sprague Dawley rats; the cells were characterised by toluidine blue staining and subjected to apoptosis with FasL. PF was diluted to various concentrations and added to annulus fibrosus cells at various times. The impact of PF and FasL on cell apoptosis of annulus fibrosus cells was determined by flow cytometry. Western blot analysis was performed to determine the protein expression levels of Fas and caspase-3. The percentages of apoptotic annulus fibrosus cells as well as the expression levels of caspase-3 and Fas were significantly reduced following treatment with 208, 20.8 or 2.08 µM PF. PF inhibits the activation of the Fas-FasL signal pathway and decreases FasL-induced apoptosis of annulus fibrosus cells.

ABSTRACT

[Purpose] The aim of the present study was to seek evidence for the effectiveness of Tai Chi for patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). [Subjects and Methods] Systematic searches were conducted of the China Journals Full-text Database, Pubmed, Medline, Science Direct-Online Journals and CINAHL for studies published between 2000 and 2012. Studies were evaluated based on following inclusion criteria: 1) design: randomized control, clinical trial; 2) subjects: patients with a knee osteoarthritis diagnosis; 3) intervention: exercise involving Tai Chi; 4) studies published in English or Chinese. [Results] Six randomized control studies involving Tai Chi and knee osteoarthritis were found. [Conclusion] Tai Chi was an effective way of relieving pain and improving physical function. Further randomized controlled trials with large sample sizes and long training period are needed to compare groups who perform Tai Chi training with other groups who undergo other forms of physical exercise in order to confirm the efficacy of Tai Chi.
