ABSTRACT

The present study examined relations between concern for mianzi, or the social perception of one's prestige and standing in the group, and adjustment in Chinese adolescents. Participants were seventh- and ninth-grade students in rural and urban regions of China (n = 794, Mage = 14 years). Data were obtained from multiple sources including peer assessments, teacher ratings, self-reports, and school records. The results showed that concern for mianzi was associated with social competence, leadership, academic achievement, as well as aggression and mixed peer relationships in rural adolescents. In contrast, concern for mianzi was associated with comprehensive social, school, and psychological adjustment problems in urban adolescents. The results indicate the role of context in shaping the relations between adolescents' concern for mianzi and adjustment.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the mechanisms of forming reactive species to degrade micropollutants through the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by phosphate, a prevalent ion in wastewater. Considering the density functional theory results, the formation of hydrogen bonds between phosphate and PMS molecules might be the crucial step in the overall reactions, which prefers producing ⋅OH and reactive phosphate species (RPS, namely H2PO4⋅, HPO4⋅-, and PO4⋅2-) to yielding SO4⋅-. Besides, in the phosphate (5 mM)/PMS system at pH = 8, HPO4⋅- was modeled to be the dominant radical with a steady-state concentration of 3.6 × 10-12 M, which was 666 and 773 times higher than those of ⋅OH and SO4⋅-. The contributions of 1O2, ⋅OH, SO4⋅-, and RPS to the micropollutant decomposition in phosphate/PMS were studied, and RPS were found to be selective for micropollutants with electron-donating moieties (such as phenolic and aniline groups). Additionally, the degradation pathways of bisphenol A, diclofenac, ibuprofen, and atrazine in phosphate/PMS were proposed according to the detected transformation products. Cytotoxicity analysis was carried out to evaluate the potential environmental impacts resulting from the degradation of micropollutants by phosphate/PMS. This study confirmed the significance of RPS for micropollutant degradation during PMS-based treatment in phosphate-rich scenarios.

ABSTRACT

Although previous studies revealed that peer victimization was closely related to revenge, mechanisms underlying this association have been unclear. The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating role of hostility attribution bias (HAB) and the moderating role of rumination tendency in the relationship between peer victimization and revenge. The data were collected from 6,622 adolescents. The PROCESS macro of SPSS 26.0 was used to examine the hypotheses. The results show that peer victimization positively associates with revenge. Hostile attribution bias play a partial mediating role between peer victimization and revenge. Both the direct effect of peer victimization on revenge and the first half of the mediating effect of HAB are moderated by rumination tendencies. Specifically, both direct and indirect effects of peer victimization on revenge are stronger in individuals with concrete experiential rumination (CER) tendency than in those with abstract analytic rumination (AAR) tendency.

ABSTRACT

Childhood abuse has been shown to have a range of adverse physical and psychological consequences, including aggression and bullying. While researchers have explored the relationship between childhood abuse and cyberbullying, little is known about the impact of emotional abuse on cyberbullying. This study examined the link between childhood emotional abuse (CEA) and cyberbullying perpetration among university students in the Chinese cultural context, as well as the chain mediating effect of self-esteem and Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU). A total of 835 university students (18-25 years old; 293 males, 542 females; M age = 19.44 years, SD = 1.28) completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire Short-Form (CTQ-SF), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the Social Media Use Questionnaire (SMUQ), and Cyberbullying Inventory (CBI). The results showed that CEA and PSMU were positively correlated with cyberbullying; self-esteem was negatively correlated with cyberbullying. Besides, self-esteem and PSMU sequentially mediated the relationship between CEA and cyberbullying perpetration. The findings indicate that childhood emotional abuse may lower self-esteem and cause problematic social media use, which increases cyberbullying perpetration.

ABSTRACT

Cyberbullying is a serious global problem that affects many teenagers and university students. Recent studies have explored the relationship between personality traits and cyberbullying, but the mechanism needs further research. This paper examines the impact of personality traits on cyberbullying perpetration of Chinese university students and the moderating role of Internet self-efficacy (ISE) and gender. By random cluster sampling, 549 university students (45.7% boys) participated in filling out the self-report questionnaires. The results revealed: (1) conscientiousness, agreeableness, and openness were significantly negatively correlated with cyberbullying perpetration. (2) The stratified regression showed that ISE moderated the relation between agreeableness and cyberbullying. Gender moderated the relationship between agreeableness and cyberbullying, and openness and cyberbullying.
