ABSTRACT

Ceramsites can be used as water storage materials, but the challenges of low water absorption and short water-retention time are restricted to their application. In this paper, a novel multilayer powder coatings method was used to prepare a structure-designed ceramsite. The results showed that the structure-designed ceramsite can be prepared by a multilayer powder coating method. A ceramsite with large internal and small external pores has superior properties, with a water absorption rate of 51.3% at 24 h and a water-retention time of 56 h at 50 °C and 55% RH. This work not only broadens the new way of solid waste resource utilization but also has great significance in promoting the construction of sponge cities and overcoming the urban heat island effect.

ABSTRACT

Concrete in which EPS (expanded polystyrene) particles partially or completely replace concrete aggregates is called EPS concrete. Compared to traditional concrete, EPS concrete has a controllable low density and good thermal-insulation performance, which make it promising for prospective applications. At present, research on EPS concrete mostly focuses on increasing its strength and EPS surface modifications. Few researchers have studied the influence of cementitious material strength and EPS-concrete density on the strength of EPS concrete. In this research, cement was used as the main material, and fly ash, silica fumes, and blast furnace slag were selected as admixtures. By changing the mixing proportions of the admixtures, the basic properties, such as the paste strength, change. Based on the mix proportions of the above different raw materials, EPS concrete with different density levels was prepared to explore the influence of the density of EPS concrete and the strength of cementitious materials on the strength of EPS concrete. The influence of the slurry strength on EPS-concrete strength was weaker than that of the density of EPS concrete. When the strength range of the cementitious materials is 35.7~70.5 MPa, the compressive strength range of 1000 kg/m3, 1200 kg/m3, and 1400 kg/m3 EPS concrete is 8.8~17.6 MPa, 11.4~18.0 MPa, and 15.7~26.6 MPa, respectively. Based on the experiments, the fitting equation to determine the EPS-concrete strength-EPS-concrete density-cementitious material strength is z = 69.00087 + 0.0244x - 0.1746y - 0.00189x2 + 0.0000504706y2 + 0.00028401xy. Additionally, a strength-increasing design method for EPS concrete with different densities prepared by conventional Portland cement is clarified. This study can guide the preparation of EPS concrete.

ABSTRACT

Sintering solidification is an effective way to treat soil contaminated with nonvolatile heavy metal. The ceramsite prepared from contaminated soil after sintering can be used as lightweight aggregate in concrete. The preparation process of ceramsite can be divided into two steps: granulation and sintering. As one of the key processes, granulation is directly related to the final solidification and physical properties of ceramsite, and the properties of the clay are directly related to the granulation process. In this work, clays from different regions granulated with disc granulation were studied and compared. The results showed that different clays had significantly different performances in granulation with the same granulation system, and each clay had its own best process parameter. The significance analysis showed that the volume surface mean diameter and the reduction ratio had the most significant impact on the granulated fraction among all the factors. No matter which process parameter was used, as the particle size increased, the granulated fraction increased first and then decreased, and the best results were obtained when the average volume diameter was about 20.5 µm. Furthermore, as the reduction ratio increased, the granulated fraction decreased. These two factors are easy to measure and can be used for predicting the granulation effect of different clays, which can further guide industrial production.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a shell structure ceramsite has been prepared and researched in order to attempt a new method of producing lightweight ceramsite. In the experiment, raw material was made into slurry and polypropylene balls were treated with the soak-and-pick process in the slurry to make the green body; later, the green body was dried and fired in the furnace to make the shell structure ceramsite. The result showed that the shell structure ceramsite has an appropriate cylindrical compressive strength (0.87 MPa) with a bulk density at a low level (0.375 × 103 kg/m3), which can be used for lightweight concrete preparation, and with its special structure, it can be used for many other purposes.
