ABSTRACT

The eco-friendly synthesis of metal oxides pn junction composite with high visible light absorption and its photoelectrochemical monitoring on antibiotics is reported. The In2O3-CuO pn heterojunction composite was successfully prepared by in-situ hydrothermal decoration of CuO on the prepared In2O3 using a simple reflux method. The obtained nanorods like In2O3-CuO pn heterojunction exhibited high conductivity with excellent stability for the facilitated photoelectrochemical detection of ornidazole (ONZ) that plays a role in aquatic toxicology. The photo-stability and optical characteristics of the In2O3-CuO heterojunction composite were analyzed through photocurrent and UV-visible studies. Mechanism of ONZ signaling has been proposed with appropriate band levels derived by Mott-Schottky analysis. An optimized In2O3-CuO heterojunction detects ONZ in the range 0.05-65.3 nM with 0.0092 nM as the limit of detection at - 0.45 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) working potential. The practical applicability of the sensor device was tested in chicken meat, human urine, and lake water samples containing ONZ. The recoveries of real samples were above 95% and results obtained were compared with electrochemical methods.

ABSTRACT

Tetracycline (TC), a popularly found drug pollutant, can be contaminated in food and aquatic regions and causes a severe impact on human health. In this research, a visible light active p-stannic oxide/n-copper manganate (p-SnO2/n-CuMnO2) heterojunction was synthesized and has been applied for a signal on photoelectrochemical sensing of antibiotic TC. Firstly, the n-SnO2 microrods were synthesized via a simple and efficient homogeneous precipitation method and the p-CuMnO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by a facile ultrasound-assisted hydrothermal method. The SnO2/CuMnO2 microrods p-n heterojunction was prepared through a simple impregnation method and physicochemical properties of the microrods are characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UVDRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Mott-Schottky analyses. The photoelectrochemical sensing performance of SnO2/CuMnO2 microrods was 2.7 times higher than that of as-synthesized pure SnO2 microrods is due to the more visible light absorption ability and p-n heterojunction (synergy). The designed SnO2/CuMnO2/ITO sensor gives photocurrent signals for the detection of TC in the range of 0.01-1000 µM with the detection limit (LOD) of 5.6 nM. The practical applicability of the sensor was monitored in cow milk and the Taipei River water sample.

ABSTRACT

As a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine,Stellaria dichotoma var. lanceolata has a medicinal history of several hundred years, and been included in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China. With a sweet fact and mild war nature, it enters liver and stomach meridians. With effects in clearing deficient heat and eliminating fever in infantile malnu, it has been used to treat such diseases as Yin deficiency fever, consumptive fever due to Yin deficiency and infantile chancre fever, and taken as the raw materials of Wuji Baifeng Wan and other traditional Chinese medicine preparations. In recent years, there have been increasing demands for S. dichotoma var. lanceolata from people. However, its wild resources have been over-excavated for a long time, leading to a serious shortage of wild strains. Furthermore, the quality of artificial S. dichotoma var. lanceolata medicine is far different from that of wild cultivars. Meanwhile, pesticide residues and excessive metal standards due to the irrational use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in the production process, as well as the large number of counterfeits in the market seriously impact the quality, efficacy and drug safety of S. dichotoma var. lanceolata medicine. Therefore, the non-polluted production technology of S. dichotoma var. lanceolata is of great significance. The non-polluted production technology would be an effective mode for promoting the sound development of S. dichotoma var. lanceolata industry in the future and the key to solve the issues. This article summarizes the environment of suitable production area, plantation method, comprehensive soil improvement, field management and rational fertilization technology. It also proposes that the prevention and control of pollution-free safflower pests and diseases should follow the principle of giving priority to comprehensive prevention. The pollution-free and technical regulation system of S.dichotoma var. lanceolata cultivars is built to produce excellent,high-quality and non-polluted production with low content of pesticide residues and heavy metals, and promote the healthy and sustainable development of the global S.dichotoma var. lanceolata industry.

ABSTRACT

DNA metabarcoding, one rapid and robust method using specific standard DNA fragments, has been widely used for rapid species identification of a bulk sample through high-throughput sequencing technologies. While it has been widely used in the studies of metagenomics, animal and plant biodiversity,it has gradually come to be used as a profitable method in species identification of mixed Chinese herbal medicines. In this paper,we mainly summarize the current studies of the application of DNA metabarcoding in species identification of mixed Chinese herbal medicines.Moreover,high-throughput sequencing technologies adopted in those studies, such as Sanger, the next-generation,and third-generation sequencing technologies, are discussed. It is conducted to provide a theoretical guidance for the application of DNA metabarcoding in species identification of mixed Chinese herbal medicines and in more other biodiversity studies.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate clinical outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction under arthroscopy combined with limited open repair of medial collateral ligament (MCL) for the treatment of multiple ligament injuries of knee joints.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>From March 2006 and June 2012,the data of 14 patients (14 knees) with multiple injuries of ACL, PCL, and MCL were collected. There were 8 males and 6 females with an average age of (31.8 +/- 8.1) years old (ranged, 20 to 49 years old). All the patients were performed with X-ray and MRI examination, and the results showed that 10 patients had combined with injuries of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL); 4 patients had ALC,PCL and posterolateral corner (PLC) injuries. Four patients had medial meniscus injuries and 2 patients had lateral meniscus injuries. The MCL,PLC and meniscus injuries were treated with operation on the first stage, and functional exercises were performed 3 weeks after fixation. The reconstruction operation of ACL and (or) PCL was performed at the second stage under arthroscopy 3 to 6 months later when the movement range of knee joint recovered to the normal level with obvious relaxation.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>All incisions healed by primary intention. All the patients were followed up with a mean duration of 48.9 months (ranged, 24 to 80 months). The Lysholm score was improved from preoperative 19.6 +/- 0.9 to the latest follow-up 87.1 +/- 2.8 (t=12.3, P<0.01). The International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) rating: 9 cases nearly recovered to normal, 5 cases were abnormal.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>For multiple ligament injuries in the knee, staged repair and reconstruction can effectively restore knee joint stability and function.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the effect of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) on graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (allo-BMT) and related mechanism in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) mice.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Twenty nude mice were randomly divided into control (group A) and test (group B) groups for monitoring relapse, and 20 BALB/c mice into control (group C) and test (group D) groups for GVHD. HGF as injected from day 0 to day 7 after BMT for groups B and D, while PBS for A and C. CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell were evaluated by flow cytometry. The survival of mice after BMT was recorded. The level of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) was evaluated by ELISA.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The median past-BMT survival were 7.00 +/- 1.58, 9.00 +/- 1.58, 11.00 +/- 3.95 and 24.00 +/- 13.44 days for groups A, B, C, D, respectively, being prolonged in group D. HGF could decrease the quantity of CD4(+) T cells [group D (10.39 +/- 1.15)% vs group C (13.50 +/- 1.80)%, P < 0.01] and increase CD8(+) T cell [group D (12.25 +/- 2.85)% vs group C (6.12 +/- 1.99)%, P < 0.01], decrease the level of TNF-alpha in transplanted ALL mice [group D (112.10 +/- 18.99) pg/ml vs group C (143.90 +/- 25.35) pg/ml, P < 0.01] and reduce the degree of GVHD.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>HGF could alleviate post-allo-BMT GVHD but retain GVL effect.</p>
