ABSTRACT

A nondestructive and simple method for the determination of bromine and iodine in soil was investigated using an energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer equipped with three-dimensional polarized optics. Using a gadolinium X-ray tube and Mo and Al2O3 as optimal secondary target materials, K-lines were detected for bromine and iodine. The minimum detection limits for bromine and iodine were calculated using JSAC0411, a certified reference material of soil for metal composition analysis, and were 0.77 mg/kg for bromine and 2.3 mg/kg for iodine at a measurement time of 600 s. The results of the determination of bromine and iodine in soil samples by the standard addition method were 256 ± 8 mg/kg for iodine and 67.9 ± 1.3 mg/kg for bromine with JSAC0411, which were in close agreement with the results measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after alkaline extraction with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution. The method developed in this study is an excellent technique for direct analysis of soil by X-ray fluorescence analysis without any pretreatment such as alkaline extraction. It is expected to be a practical analytical method for elucidating the dynamics of bromine and iodine in agricultural land and soil.

ABSTRACT

Plant stem cells are the cells that are located in meristems and are kept in a state of undifferentiation. Plant stem cell possesses lower vacuolization, higher mitochondrial activity, more genetic stability and stronger self-renewal capacity compared with calli. Plant stem cell culture has a wide application in pharmaceutical, functional food as well as cosmetic industries. Here we describe the procedure of induction, isolation and identification of plant stem cells, to provide a reference for further research in this field.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the feasibility of nasolabial sulcus flap transfer with autologous free skin graft to repair the alar defects after malignant tumor resection. Methods From January 2012 to January 2015,9 patients with malignant tumor were treated in the hospital. After complete tumor removal, the defect area being reconstructed was 1.5 cm × 1.3 cm to 2.5 cm × 2.5 cm.The defects of 9 patients were all restored with nasolabial sulcus flap combined with autologous free skin graft. Results The 9 patients were followed up for 6-18 months postoperatively. The nasolabial sulcus flap and autologous free skin graft were survived completely in all cases.Symmetrical alae were noted with slight edema within nasal cavity but without difficult ventilation.Scar was repaired in phase-two surgery. Conclusions Nasolabial sulcus flap combined with autologous free skin graft is an optional way in alar defects restoration.Further with secondary morphologic plasty, satisfactory surgical outcome can be achieved.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the influence of excessive PTEN expression to fibroblast cycle and collagen secretion induced by LPS.Methods Normal skin fibroblast in the patient with hyperplastic scar were cultured in vitro. When the primary culture was close to 80% fusion, the digestive passage was performed, cultured to the third generation.LPS(0.5 μg/mL) was adopted to stimulate the third generation of normal skin fibroblasts.Defective adenovirus carrying PTEN gene was transfected to the third passage fibroblasts after LPS stimulation.Flow cytometer was adopted to detect the cell cycle.ELISA method was adopted to detect the secreted collagen amont. Results Excessive PTEN expression could inhibit the increase of G2M cell cycle induced by LPS.LPS stimulation could increase the secretion of collagen in skin fibroblasts, yet excessive PTEN expression could inhibit the secretion of collagen induced by LPS.Conclusion LPS could increase the amont of fibroblasts on G2M cell cycle and secretion of collagen, yet excessive PTEN expression can inhibit the effect.

ABSTRACT

Objective To report our experience in versatile use of double fascial flaps in reconstruction of facial skin defects. Methods A total of 10 patients were enrolled in this study (6 males and 4 females, aged 14-46 years).Based on the location, size and shape of the facial skin defects after tumor resection, paralleled double fascial flaps, vertical double fasical flaps and special angle double fascial flaps were designed respectively. Results All the patients were followed up for 6-12 months after operation.Operative incision split combined with infection was observed in one case.Mild pigmentation around the incision was observed in two cases. The cosmetic results were quite satisfactory to all patients. Conclusions As far as the advantages, minimal donor site morbidity, versatile designation as concerned, the double fascial flaps are good choices in the repair of facial skin defects.

ABSTRACT

Objective To report the effect of expanded neck and mastoid region flap in the reparation of facial scars. Methods Total 8 patients were included from January 2007 to May 2011.Tissue expanders were implanted in the neck and mastoid region after we selected suitable expander on the basis of an area of facial scars.Three to six months later, the expanded neck and mastoid region flap was used to repair large area of facial scars. Results From January 2007 to May 2011,we used expanded neck and mastoid region flap to resurface the facial scars in 8 patients. One patient appeared small size of necrosis (0.3 cm× 2.0 cm to 0.5 cm× 2.0 cm) in the distal area and healed after dressing changes. All the other patients healed completely. The period of follow-up was 6 months to 2 years. The flaps matched well to the surrounding skin in terms of color and good texture. Conclusions The method of combined expander neck and mastoid region skin flaps to repair facial scars is suitable. We believe this is a good option of repairing large area of facial scars.

ABSTRACT

Together with the completion of the Human Genome Project, biomedical research has marched into the "Post-Genomic Era." In order to take advantage of this extracted gene related information extensively and precisely so as to realize man's biological phenomena as well as the mechanism of pathogenesis, consequentially, a large scale sample collection of different geological areas and/or ethnic groups becomes necessary for the future population based genetic research of a country and, in turn, the construction of population-based genetic database (Biobank). In recent years, both mainland China and Taiwan have not only made great progress in information and computation technologies, but have also gradually taken a close look into the quality of medicine delivery. Thus, it becomes unavoidable for both sides to create each one's population-based genetic databases (Biobank). Theoretically speaking, the Biobank development shall benefit the study on the correlation between genes and disease and also the solution for disease treatment as well. At the same time, medical diagnostic technology has also been significantly improved. It is believable that the population-based genetic database might be utilized to promote medical quality and to reduce the cost of public health delivery. Further; in the near future, it might become the "raw materials "for medical research application. However when taking promotion of public welfare as the premises for a Biobank development, the severe and multi challenge occurred against the traditional legal rules in terms of the privacy protection, public trust development, the compliance of informed consent principle, the implementation of benefit-sharing doctrine and the possible discrimination concern about the population/participants selection and some other ELSI issues. In this paper, the major legal issues encountered by the Biobank development will first be reviewed accompanied by the background information concerning the Biobank development scenario crossing the Taiwan Strait. Also, mainly following the realm of comparative policy or legal approaches, the paper learning from the fruits of this comparative study, tries to propose some recommendations for future legislative consideration by both mainland China and Taiwan. It's been this author's wish that, when establishing a large scale population based Biobank, the promotion of public trust shall be placed as the primary goal together with the emphasis on supporting publicity and transparency on the administrative practices, so as to encourage the public participation in observing the principle of altruism and, in turn, benefit the future biomedicine development.
