ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND rimary hepatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PHNEN) are exceedingly rare tumors with atypical clinical manifestations, accounting for less than 0.5% of all neuroendocrine tumors. Currently, there is a lack of consensus on their management, and guidelines do not recommend postoperative chemotherapy for patients with stage G1/G2 disease after curative resection. We present a case report of PHNEN, outlining its diagnostic challenges, treatment strategy, and clinical outcomes. CASE REPORT A 31-year-old man presented with jaundice and was initially diagnosed with suspected IgG4-related disease, which initially appeared to respond to steroid therapy, but manifested worsening jaundice 4 months after initial treatment. Subsequent evaluation revealed a PHNEN NET G2 with lymph node metastasis and invasion of the right hepatic artery; and involvement of the hepatic duct at the hepatic hilum, primarily the left hepatic duct. The patient underwent extended left hemi-hepatectomy with caudate lobe resection, bile duct resection, and lymphadenectomy, followed by reconstruction of the right hepatic artery. Postoperatively, the patient received adjuvant chemotherapy consisting of capecitabine (1000 mg bid D1-14) and temozolomide (200 mg qn D10-14) for 6 cycles. Currently, the patient remains disease free 43 months after treatment. CONCLUSIONS PHNEN presents diagnostic challenges due to its rarity and lack of specific markers. Surgical resection remains the cornerstone of treatment, with chemotherapy being considered in select cases with high-risk features. Further research is needed to refine treatment approaches and improve outcomes for patients with PHNEN.

ABSTRACT

Cordyceps cicadae (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae) is a renowned entomopathogenic fungus used as herbal medicine in China. However, wild C. cicadae resources have been threatened by heavy harvesting. We hypothesised that Bombyx mori L. (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) could be a new alternative to cultivate C. cicadae due to the low cost of rearing. Bacterial communities are crucial for the formation of Cordyceps and for promoting the production of metabolites. To better understand the bacterial community structure associated with Cordyceps, three Claviciptaceae fungi were used to explore the pathogenicity of the silkworms. Here, fifth-instar silkworms were infected with C. cicadae, Cordyceps cateniannulata (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae) and Beauveria bassiana (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae). Subsequently, we applied high-throughput sequencing to explore the composition of bacterial communities in silkworms. Our results showed that all three fungi were highly pathogenic to silkworms, which suggests that silkworms have the potential to cultivate Cordyceps. After fungal infection, the diversity of bacterial communities in silkworms decreased significantly, and the abundance of Staphylococcus increased in mummified larvae, which may play a role in the death process when the host suffers infection by entomopathogenic fungi. Furthermore, there were high similarities in the bacterial community composition and function in the C. cicadae and C. cateniannulata infected samples, and the phylogenetic analysis suggested that these similarities may be related to the fungal phylogenetic relationship. Our findings reveal that infection with different entomopathogenic fungi affects the composition and function of bacterial communities in silkworms and that the bacterial species associated with Cordyceps are primarily host dependent, while fungal infection affects bacterial abundance.

ABSTRACT

IMPORTANCE: During the natural growth of Cordyceps chanhua, it will form a mycoderm structure specialized from hyphae. We found that the bacterial membrane of C. chanhua not only filters environmental bacteria but also absorbs and transports nitrogen elements inside and outside the body of C. chanhua. These findings are of great significance for understanding the stable mechanism of the internal microbial community maintained by C. chanhua and how C. chanhua maintains its own nutritional balance. In addition, this study also enriched our understanding of the differences in bacterial community composition and related bacterial community functions of C. chanhua at different growth stages, which is of great value for understanding the environmental adaptation mechanism, the element distribution network, and the changing process of symbiotic microbial system after Cordyceps fungi infected the host. At the same time, it can also provide a theoretical basis for some important ecological imitation cultivation technology of Cordyceps fungi.

ABSTRACT

Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is a pest that feeds on various crops worldwide. A prior study identified Lecanicillium attenuatum and L. cauligalbarum as pathogens of F. occidentalis. Unfortunately, the potential of these two entomopathogenic fungi for the biocontrol of F. occidentalis has not been effectively evaluated. The internal microbes (endosymbionts and the gut microbiota) of insects, especially gut bacteria, are crucial in regulating the interactions between the host and intestinal pathogens. The role of thrips internal microbes in the infection of these two entomopathogenic fungi is also unknown. Therefore, biological control of thrips is immediately needed, and to accomplish that, an improved understanding of the internal microbes of thrips against Lecanicillium infection is essential. The virulence of the two pathogenic fungi against F. occidentalis increased with the conidia concentration. Overall, the LC50 of L. cauligalbarum was lower than that of L. attenuatum, and the pathogenicity degree was adult > pupa > nymphs. The activities of protective enzymes include superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD); detoxification enzymes include polyphenol oxidase (PPO), glutathione s-transferase (GSTs), and carboxylesterase (CarE); hormones include ecdysone and juvenile hormone; and the composition and proportion of microorganisms (fungi and bacteria) in F. occidentalis infected by L. cauligalbarum and L. attenuatum have changed significantly. According to the network correlation results, there was a considerable correlation among the internal microbes (including bacteria and fungi), enzyme activities, and hormones, which indicates that in addition to bacteria, internal fungi of F. occidentalis are also involved in the L. cauligalbarum and L. attenuatum infection process. In addition, the development time of the surviving F. occidentalis exposed to L. cauligalbarum or L. attenuatum was significantly shorter than that of the control group. Furthermore, the intrinsic rate of increase (rm), finite rate of increase (λ), net reproductive rate (R0), mean generation time (T), and gross reproductive rate (GRR) were significantly lower in the treatment groups than in the control group. L. attenuatum and L. cauligalbarum have biocontrol potential against F. occidentalis. In addition to bacteria, internal fungi of F. occidentalis are also involved in the infection process of insect pathogenic fungi. Disruption of the internal microbial balance results in discernible sublethal effects. Such prevention and control potential should not be ignored. These findings provide an improved understanding of physiological responses in thrips with altered immunity against entomopathogenic fungal infections, which can guide us toward the development of novel biocontrol strategies against thrips.

ABSTRACT

Background: Entomopathogenic fungi can live in insects to cause disease and death and are the largest group of entomopathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, these fungi are best known for their microbial control potential. Importantly, they also have other beneficial effects, including promoting plant growth and development by colonizing plant. Here, the study sought to identify specific strains of the entomopathogenic fungus, Cordyceps cateniannulata that would form endophytic associations with tobacco, thus benefiting plant growth and resistance to abiotic stresses, thereby highlighting the application of entomopathogenic fungi in tobacco. Methods: The C. cateniannulata-tobacco symbiont was constructed by root irrigation. The effects of C. cateniannulata on tobacco growth were evaluated by measuring the maximum leaf length, maximum leaf width, number of leaves, plant height, stem thickness, stem circumference, dry and fresh shoot weight 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after colonization. The peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and malondialdehyde were measured to observe the impact of C. cateniannulata on tobacco defense enzyme activity. Finally, high-throughput sequencing was used to access microbial communities in the rhizosphere, with data subsequently linked to growth indicators. Results: After tobacco was inoculated with C. cateniannulata X8, which significantly promoted growth and related enzyme activity, malondialdehyde was decreased. The most significant impact was on peroxidase, with its activity being upregulated by 98.20, 154.42, 180.65, and 170.38% in the four time periods, respectively. The high throughput sequencing results indicated that C. cateniannulata had changed the rhizosphere microbial relative abundances, such as increasing Acidobacteria and Ascomycetes, and decreasing Actinomycetes and Basidiomycetes. The redundancy analysis showed that C. cateniannulata significantly boosted tobacco growth by reducing the abundance of specific dominant genera such as Stachybotrys, Cephalotrichum, Streptomyces, Isoptericola, and Microbacterium. Conclusion: Specific strains of C. cateniannulata can be introduced into host plants as endophytes, resulting in promotion of host plant growth and increased resistance to abiotic stress and microbial pathogens. The study provides a foundation for future studies of C. cateniannulata as an ecological agent.

ABSTRACT

Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and HER-2 negative metastatic breast cancer (HER-2 negative MBC) are intractable to various treatment schemes. Bevacizumab as a novel anti-VEGF drug, its safety for these two high-risk breast cancers remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted this meta-analysis to assess the safety of Bevacizumab for TNBC and HER-2 negative MBC. Methods: We searched Medline, Embase, Web of science and Cochrane databases updated to 1 Oct 2022 for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs). In all, 18 RCTs articles with 12,664 female patients were included. We used any grade Adverse Events (AEs) and grade ≥3 AEs to assess the AEs of Bevacizumab. Results: Our study demonstrated that the application of Bevacizumab was associated with increased incidence of grade ≥3 AEs (RR = 1.37, 95% CI 1.30-1.45, Rate: 52.59% vs. 41.32%). Any grade AEs (RR = 1.06, 95% CI 1.04-1.08, Rate: 64.55% vs. 70.59%) did not show a significant statistical difference in both overall results and among the subgroups. In subgroup analysis, HER-2 negative MBC (RR = 1.57, 95% CI 1.41-1.75, Rate: 39.49% vs. 25.6%), dosage over 15 mg/3w (RR = 1.44, 95% CI 1.07-1.92, Rate: 28.67% vs. 19.93%) and endocrine therapy (ET) (RR = 2.32, 95% CI 1.73-3.12, Rate: 31.17% vs. 13.42%) were associated with higher risk of grade ≥3 AEs. Of all graded ≥3 AEs, proteinuria (RR = 9.22, 95%CI 4.49-18.93, Rate: 4.22% vs. 0.38%), mucosal inflammation (RR = 8.12, 95%CI 2.46-26.77, Rate: 3.49% vs. 0.43%), palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia syndrome (RR = 6.95, 95%CI 2.47-19.57, Rate: 6.01% vs. 0.87%), increased Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (RR = 6.95, 95%CI 1.59-30.38, Rate: 3.13% vs. 0.24%) and hypertension (RR = 4.94, 95%CI 3.84-6.35, Rate: 9.44% vs. 2.02%) had the top five risk ratios. Conclusion: The addition of Bevacizumab for TNBC and HER-2 negative MBC patients showed an increased incidence of AEs especially for grade ≥3 AEs. The risk of developing different AEs varies mostly dependent on the type of breast cancer and combined therapy. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Osteoporosis poses a challenge to public health, causing fragility fractures, especially in postmenopausal women. Abaloparatide (ABL) is an effective anabolic agent to improve bone formation and resorption among postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Our meta-analysis aims to assess the effectiveness and safety of ABL versus teriparatide (TPTD) in improving bone mineral density (BMD). METHODS: We searched Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane databases and Clinicaltrial.gov until September 2, 2022. We included data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and post hoc analyses of RCTs. Outcomes included BMD change from baseline and risks of adverse events. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) tool was used to evaluate the quality of outcomes. RESULTS: Four studies including 16 subgroups were included in this study. In particular, RCTs with head-to-head comparisons of ABL and TPTD were used in the meta-analysis, and all were from manufacturer-sponsored trials. All parameters in 24 weeks except lumbar spine (versus TPTD) showed significant advantages in the ABL group. Only the results of two subgroups in ABL versus TPTD demonstrated High GRADE quality (femoral neck: weighted mean difference (WMD) = 1.58 [0.52, 2.63]; Total hip: WMD = 1.46 [0.59, 2.32]). However, our fracture data were insufficient. Besides, we found no evident difference in serious adverse events or deaths in either group and the incidence of hypercalcemia in the ABL group lessened by 51% compared with the TPTD group. Nevertheless, compared with placebo, ABL demonstrated higher risks of nausea and palpitations. CONCLUSION: ABL demonstrated a beneficial effect on BMD compared to both placebo and TPTD for postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. ABL also had insignificantly lowered adverse event risk than TPTD. ABL is an alternative for patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common form of median nerve compression in the wrist caused by focal peripheral neuropathy. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy could improve the healing ability by exposing the injured tissues to high concentrations of autologous growth factors. Our study aims to compare all injective treatments for CTS and assess the efficacy and priority of PRP therapy. Methods: We searched Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane databases, and Clinicaltrial.gov until 17 October 2022. We only included data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated PRP injection therapy or drug injection therapy. The included RCTs measured at least one of the following three outcomes with validated instruments: in the visual analog scale (VAS), symptom severity scale (SSS), and functional status scale (FSS). Results: Overall, 19 studies with 1,066 patients were included in this study. We used the SUCRA rankings to determine the merits of various therapies. In all, 5% dextrose injections were the best treatment strategy for the VAS (MD -1.22, 95% CI -2.66 to 0.23; SUCRA = 79.2%), followed by triamcinolone (high-dose) injections (MD -0.69, 95% CI -2.11 to 0.73; SUCRA = 62.7%) and PRP injections (MD -0.39, 95% CI -1.67 to 0.89; SUCRA = 60.0%). In the SSS, the most effective intervention was hydroxyprogesterone injections (MD -0.62, 95% CI -1.09 to -0.16; SUCRA = 91.0%). The SUCRA ranking of PRP was second only to steroids and estrogen (MD -0.39, 95% CI -0.60 to -0.18; SUCRA = 60.8%). In the FSS, the best regimen strategy was hydroxyprogesterone injections (MD 0.12, 95% CI -0.30 to 0.54; SUCRA = 99.5%), followed by triamcinolone (low-dose) injections (MD -0.02, 95% CI -0.54 to 0.49; SUCRA = 87.4%) and PRP injections (MD -0.26, 95% CI -0.43 to -0.09; SUCRA = 77.1%). Conclusion: PRP is an alternative choice for CTS treatment. PRP injection is second only to steroids and estrogen in the treatment efficacy of CTS, with a wide indication and safe outcome.

Background: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive subtype of breast cancer with limited treatment options and poor prognosis. Capecitabine, as a novel adjuvant chemotherapy for TNBCs, remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted this meta-analysis to assess the efficacy and safety of capecitabine for early-stage TNBCs combined with neo-/adjuvant chemotherapy. Methods: We searched Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases updated on Mar 18, 2022 for relevant RCTs. In all, 11 RCTs with 5,175 patients were included. We used hazard ratios (HRs) and odds ratios (ORs) to assess the differences between disease-free survival (DFS), overall survival (OS), and adverse events. Results: Our study demonstrated significance differences in both DFS and OS (DFS: HR=0.77; 95% CI 0.68-0.86; OS: HR=0.73, 95% CI 0.63-0.85). In subgroup analysis, the lower dosage group showed higher DFS (HR=0.79, 95% CI 0.69-0.91), higher frequency (HR=0.72, 95%CI 0.62-0.83), and adjuvant chemotherapy (HR=0.74, 95% CI 0.65-0.84). However, capecitabine was also associated with a higher risk of diarrhea (OR=3.10, 95% CI 2.32-4.15), hand-foot syndrome (OR=25.79, 95% CI 15.32-43.42), and leukopenia (OR=2.08, 95% CI 1.13-3.84). Conclusion: The addition of capecitabine to early-stage TNBC patients receiving standard adjuvant chemotherapy showed significant DFS and OS improvement with tolerable adverse events. The lower dosage and higher frequency of capecitabine combined with adjuvant chemotherapy demonstrated a better survival outcome.

Background: The genus Lecanicillium W.Gams & Zare is a recognized insect pathogen but members of the genus have been found parasitizing various hosts including arthropods, nematodes, plants, and fungi. The new classification system for fungi proposed to reject Lecanicillium and transfer some of the species to the genus Akanthomyces. However, the attribution problem of most species in the original genus Lecanicillium remains unsolved. The current study aimed to improve understanding of the pivotal internal phylogeny in Lecanicillium by estimating the divergence times of Lecanicillium to provide additional insights into the status of this genus within the family Cordycipitaceae. Results: Dating analyses support the supposition that the ancestor of Lecanicillium was in the Cretaceous period (84.36 Mya, 95% HPD: 72.12-94.74 Mya). After originating from a common ancestor, eight clades of Lecanicillium were derived and evolved independently in parallel with other genera of Cordycipitaceae. Based on the clear divergence age estimates, Lecanicillium clade 8 originated earlier as an independent group in the Cretaceous period (75.61 Mya, 95% HPD: 63.31-87.54 Mya), while Lecanicillium clades 1-7 originated later as an independent group in the boundary of the Cretaceous and Paleogene periods (64.66 Mya, 95% HPD: 52.75-76.74 Mya). Lecanicillium huhutii formed an independent branch in a polytomy together with a clade containing Lecanicillium tenuipes (BI posterior probabilities 1, ML bootstrap 100%). Conclusion: The pivotal internal phylogeny, origin, and evolutionary history of Lecanicillium in the family Cordycipitaceae were investigated. Phylogenetic and morphological analyses indicated that there are eight representative clades (four representative branches of evolutionary history), including clade 1 (members have a relatively uniform sporulation structure comprising globose heads with a higher number of conidia), clade 8 (including all members of Gamszarea), clades 2-5 (the differences of the divergence time estimations were smaller compared with other clades), and clade 6-7 (members are close to Gibellula, Hevansia, and Ascopolyporus). Based on the above findings, a novel spider-pathogenic fungus, Lecanicillium huhutii, is described. All other species in Lecanicillium clade 1 (Lecanicillium araneogemum, L. nodulosum, L. pissodis, and L. uredinophilum) should be transferred to the genus Akanthomyces. Furthermore, the monotypic genus Parengyodontium should be merged with the genus Gamszarea. More novel species need to be discovered to thoroughly resolve the attribution problem of Lecanicillium. Finally, no major lineages of Lecanicillium were correlated with the nearby Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event, indicating that the diversity of Lecanicillium is more likely to be caused by long-term environmental adaptation and coevolution with insects rather than by dramatic extinction events.

BACKGROUND: Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is a highly rasping-sucking pest of numerous crops. The entomogenous fungi of Lecanicillium spp. are important pathogens of insect pests, and some species have been developed as commercial biopesticides. To explore Lecanicillium spp. resources in the development of more effective F. occidentalis controls, efficient barcode combinations for strain identification were screened from internal transcribed spacers (ITS), SSU, LSU, TEF, RPB1, and RPB2 genes. RESULTS: Six genes were used to reconstruct Lecanicillium genus phylogeny. The results showed that ITS, TEF, RPB1, and RPB2 could be used to identify the strains. All phylogenetic trees reconstructed by free combination of these four genes exhibited almost the same topology. Bioassay studies of a purified conidial suspension further confirmed the infection of second-instar nymphs and adult female F. occidentalis by seven Lecanicillium strains. L. attenuatum strain GZUIFR-lun1405 was the most virulent, killing approximately 91.67% F. occidentalis adults and 76.67% nymphs after a 7-day exposure. L. attenuatum strain GZUIFR-lun1405 and L. cauligalbarum strain GZUIFR-ZHJ01 were selected to compare the fungal effects on the number of eggs laid by F. occidentalis. The number of F. occidentalis nymphs significantly decreased when F. occidentalis adults were treated with L. cauligalbarum strain GZUIFR-ZHJ01. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of ITS and RPB1 could be used for fast recognition of Lecanicillium spp. This is the first report of the pathogenicity of L. attenuatum, L. cauligalbarum, L araneogenum, and L. aphanocladii against F. occidentalis. Additionally, L. cauligalbarum strain GZUIFR-ZHJ01 caused high F. occidentalis mortality and inhibited the fecundity of the pest.

ABSTRACT

A new species of entomopathogenic fungi, Lecanicilliumcauligalbarum, was discovered from a survey of invertebrate-associated fungi in the Yao Ren National Forest Mountain Park in China. The synnemata of this species emerged from the corpse of a stemborer (Lepidoptera), which was hidden amongst pieces of wood on the forest floor. It differs from morphologically similar Lecanicillium species mainly in its short conidiogenous cells and ellipsoid to ovoid and aseptate conidia. Phylogenetic analysis of a combined data set comprising ITS, SSU, LSU, TEF, RPB1 and RPB2 sequence data supported the inclusion of L.cauligalbarum in the Lecanicillium genus and its recognition as a distinct species.

BACKGROUND: Hirsutella Pat genus, the asexual morphs of the Ophiocordyceps Sung, is globally distributed entomopathogenic fungi, which infect a variety of arthropods, mites and nematodes. The fungal species also have shown potential application in the field of biological control, bio-medicine and food development. Although these fungi are synonymized under Ophiocordyceps, formal taxonomic assignments remain necessary for classification of species in Hirsutella. However, due to the heterogeneity and complexity of Hirsutella genus, more detailed taxonomic and phylogenetic analyses are required to address the following subjects: (1) the relationships between the phialide morphological characteristics and phylogenetic information of Hirsutella with asexual morphs, (2) the origin and evolution of the phialide structure, and (3) host specificity and fungal pathogenicity. RESULTS: Five typical phialide structures are summarized, in which the variation in phialide characteristics overlaps well with phylogenetic information. A new member of the special twisted neck clade in the Hirsutella-like group, Ophiocordyceps retorta, was reported based on these analyses. The molecular clock calibration analysis based on one fossil record revealed that Hirsutella (asexual morph) species originated from a common ancestor approximately 102 million years ago (Mya) (Early Cretaceous, Lower Albian) and then resolved into two major lineages. One lineage was typically phialidic, which was a larger shape, including H. guyana, H. nodulosa and H. sinensis clades (86.9 Mya, 95% highest posterior density (HPD): 69.1-101.4 Mya). Another main lineage of the phialides was more diversified and smaller than the former, which included H. citriformis and H. thompsonii clades (71.9 Mya, 95% HPD: 41.8-99.6 Mya). CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that certain phialide characteristics of Hirsutella were phylogenetically informative for two groups of taxa. The differentiation of the phialides structures in the major clades demonstrated a clear evolutionary path of Hirsutella (asexual morph) species, which exhibited two trends depending on the host size. Fungi in one of the groups displayed elongated conidiogenous cells with increased complexity of auxiliary structures from the mycelia. The species in another group reduced the volume of phialides and spores, which might be due to an energy-efficient strategy. These results suggested that a common origin allowed for diversification of given clades into separate niches. The distinct parallel evolutionary path combined with the specific phialides structure might result in the host specificity of Hirsutella (asexual morphs). A direct relationship between Hirsutella (asexual morphs) and the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction was not found, which suggested that the diversity of phialides is more likely to be caused by long-term environmental adaptation and evolution rather than dramatic extinction events. This evolutionary result might correspond to the background of important biological and geological events in the late Cretaceous occurring near the divergence times of Hirsutella (asexual morphs).

ABSTRACT

The Hirsutella genus is very special asexually-reproducing pathogens of insects by reduced sporulation, host specificity and spores covered by a thick mucilage layer. However, the ecological function of conidial mucilage remains elusive. In this study, the possible ecological role of conidial mucilage from the entomopathogenic fungus Hirsutella satumaensis was functionally investigated through tolerance, adherence and insect bioassays involving aerial conidia (AC) and mucilage-free conidia (MFC). Measurements of hydrophobicity using microbial adhesion to hydrocarbons (MATH) indicated that mucilage is main contributor to the surface hydrophobicity of AC. When subjected in tolerance assays to extreme temperatures, high chemical pressure, extended exposure to ultraviolet radiation and cold stress, AC produced more colonies, exhibited higher conidiation and germination percentages than those of MFC. In adhesion assays, MFC displayed an approximately 40% reduction in adherence to locust, dragonfly cuticle and onion epidermis when washed with 0.05% Tween 20. Similarly, Galleria mellonella and Plutella xylostella larvae infected with mucilage-producing AC experienced a relatively higher mortality rate. Our findings suggest that mucilage is critical to the ecological adaptability of H. satumaensis, where it plays positive roles on maintenance of spore surface hydrophobicity, enhancement of spore resistance to extreme environments and strengthening of spore adhesion and host pathogenicity.
