ABSTRACT

Introduction: Evidence in non-ocular tissues indicate that the antioxidant glutathione (GSH) may be regulated in a circadian manner leading to the idea that GSH levels in the lens may also be controlled in a circadian manner to anticipate periods of oxidative stress. Methods: Male rat Wistar lenses (6 weeks) were collected every 4 hours over a 24-hour period at 6am, 10am, 2pm, 6pm, 10pm and 2am and quantitative-PCR, western blotting and immunohistochemistry performed to examine the expression of core clock genes and proteins (BMAL1, CLOCK, CRY1-2, PER 1-3) and their subcellular localisation over a 24-hour period. Western blotting of lenses was also performed to examine the expression of NRF2, a transcription factor involved in regulating genes involved in GSH homeostasis and GSH related enzymes (GCLC, GS and GR) over the 24-hour period. Finally, HLPC was used to measure GSH levels in the aqueous humour and lenses every 4 hours over a 24-hour period. Results: The rat lens contains the core molecular components of a circadian clock with the expression of core clock proteins, NRF2 and GSH related enzymes fluctuating over a 24-hour period. BMAL1 expression was highest during the day, with BMAL1 localised to the nuclei at 10am. NRF2 expression remained constant over the 24-hour period, although appeared to move in and out of the nuclei every 4 hours. GSH related enzyme expression tended to peak at the start of night which correlated with high levels of GSH in the lens and lower levels of GSH in the aqueous humour. Conclusion: The lens contains the key components of a circadian clock, and time-of-day differences exist in the expression of GSH and GSH related enzymes involved in maintaining GSH homeostasis. GSH levels in the rat lens were highest at the start of night which represents the active phase of the rat when high GSH levels may be required to counteract oxidative stress induced by cellular metabolism. Future work to directly link the clock to regulation of GSH levels in the lens will be important in determining whether the clock can be used to help restore GSH levels in the lens.

ABSTRACT

Biochar has been used to enhance methane generation from anaerobic digestion through establishing direct interspecific electron transfer between microorganisms. However, the microbial communication is still inadequate, thereby limiting further methane production improvement contributed by biochar. This study investigated the roles of quorum-sensing molecules, acylated homoserine lactone (AHL), in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge aided by biochar. Results showed that the co-addition of separated biochar and AHL achieved best methane production performance, with the maximal methane yield of 154.7 mL/g volatile suspended solids, which increased by 51.9%, 47.2%, 17.9%, and 39.4% respectively compared to that of control, AHL-loaded biochar, sole AHL, and sole biochar groups. The reason was that the co-addition of separated biochar and AHL promoted the stages of hydrolysis and acidification, promoting the conversion of organic matters and short-chain fatty acids, and optimizing the accumulation of acetate acid. Moreover, the methanogenesis stage also performed best among experimental groups. Correspondingly, the highest activities of electron transfer and coenzyme F420 were obtained, with increase ratios of 33.2% and 27.2% respectively compared to that of control. Furthermore, biochar did more significant effects on the evolution of microbial communities than AHL, and the direct interspecific electron transfer between fermentative bacteria and methanogens were possibly promoted.

ABSTRACT

To recover methane from waste activated sludge through anaerobic digestion (AD) is one promising alternative to achieve carbon neutrality for wastewater treatment plants. However, humic acids (HAs) are one of the major compositions in waste activated sludge, and their accumulation performs inhibition effects on AD. This study investigated the potentials of biochar (BC) in alleviating inhibition effects of HAs on AD. Results showed that although the accumulated HAs reduced methane yield by 9.37% compared to control, the highest methane yield, 132.6 mL CH4/g VSS, was obtained after adding BC, which was 45.9% higher than that in HA group. Mechanism analysis showed that BC promoted the activities of hydrolase such as protease and α-glucosidase, which were 69.7% and 29.7% higher than those in HA group, respectively. The conversion of short-chain fatty acids was accelerated. In addition, the evolutions of electroactive microorganisms like Clostridium_sensu_stricto_13 and Methanosaeta were consistent with the activitiies of electron transfer and the contents of cytochrome c. Furthermore, parts of HAs rather than all of them were adsorbed by BC, and the remaining free HAs and BC formed synergistic effects on methanogenesis, then both CO2 reduction and acetoclastic methanogenesis pathways were improved. The findings may provide some solutions to alleviate inhibition effects of HAs on AD.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Immunotherapy-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (IO-TKI) therapy has revolutionized the treatment landscape for metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (mccRCC); however, the absence of effective biomarkers poses a challenge in predicting the efficacy of these regimens. This study aims to explore the predictive and prognostic value of serum immunoglobulin A (IgA) in mccRCC patients undergoing IO-TKI therapy. METHODS: Ninety-six mccRCC patients treated with IO-TKI therapy from 2019 to 2023 were enrolled and serum IgA levels were assessed at the pretreatment baseline and after 3 months of treatment. RESULTS: Notably, baseline levels of IgA showed no correlation with the objective response rate. However, patients achieving complete or partial responses exhibited a remarkable decrease in IgA levels, while those with stable or progressive disease displayed an increase in IgA levels after 3 months of treatment. Furthermore, the dynamic alteration in IgA levels after 3 months of treatment demonstrated predictive value for both progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). The time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curves exhibited outstanding performance in predicting PFS (AUC 0.793) and OS (AUC 0.738). CONCLUSION: Taken together, this study demonstrates that dynamic alteration of serum IgA after 3 months of treatment was significantly correlated with prognosis and therapeutic efficacy in mccRCC patients.

ABSTRACT

To explore the impact of social distance and information presentation types on self-other risk preferences in monetary tasks. Risk preferences were examined in decision-making tasks and experiential information tasks within different frameworks when participants made decisions for themselves and others. Experiment 1 employed experiential decision tasks and revealed individual differences in decision-making for oneself and others. In gain situations, participants exhibited more risk aversion when deciding for others compared to themselves. Experiment 2 presented both types of information simultaneously to investigate whether risk decisions for oneself and others are influenced by information types. Results indicated that experiential information led participants to make more conservative choices for others, while descriptive information eliminated this effect. This study discovered the influence of social distance on self-other risk decisions and the role of information presentation types in self and other risk decision-making. Future research could further explore self-other decision-making from the perspectives of decision-makers' traits and culture.

ABSTRACT

Liver transplantation (LT) has become the most efficient treatment for pediatric and adult end-stage liver disease and the survival time after transplantation is becoming longer due to the development of surgical techniques and perioperative management. However, long-term side-effects of immunosuppressants, like infection, metabolic disorders and malignant tumor are gaining more attention. Immune tolerance is the status in which LT recipients no longer need to take any immunosuppressants, but the liver function and intrahepatic histology maintain normal. The approaches to achieve immune tolerance after transplantation include spontaneous, operational and induced tolerance. The first two means require no specific intervention but withdrawing immunosuppressant gradually during follow-up. No clinical factors or biomarkers so far could accurately predict who are suitable for immunosuppressant withdraw after transplantation. With the understanding to the underlying mechanisms of immune tolerance, many strategies have been developed to induce tolerance in LT recipients. Cellular strategy is one of the most promising methods for immune tolerance induction, including chimerism induced by hematopoietic stem cells and adoptive transfer of regulatory immune cells. The safety and efficacy of various cell products have been evaluated by prospective preclinical and clinical trials, while obstacles still exist before translating into clinical practice. Here, we will summarize the latest perspectives and concerns on the clinical application of cellular strategies in LT recipients.

ABSTRACT

A one-pot gold-catalyzed acyl migration followed by ytterbium-catalyzed asymmetric Friedel-Crafts alkylation is disclosed, leading to the rapid synthesis of chiral dihydrocarbazoles and dihydrodibenzofuran in generally moderate to good overall yields with good to excellent enantioselectivities. The gold-catalyzed acyl migration of propargyl acetates generates α-ylidene-ß-diketones with high E/Z ratios, which are then subjected to the ytterbium-catalyzed asymmetric Friedel-Crafts alkylation without any purification. Importantly, this protocol provides a new type of substrate for asymmetric Friedel-Crafts alkylation.

ABSTRACT

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease throughout the world. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver cirrhosis can result from nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the severe stage of NAFLD progression. By some estimates, NAFLD affects almost one-third of the world's population, which is completely new and serious public health issue. Unfortunately, NAFLD is diagnosed by exclusion, and the gold standard for identifying NAFLD/NASH and reliably measuring liver fibrosis remains liver biopsy, which is an invasive, costly, time-consuming procedure and involves variable inter-observer diagnosis. With the progress of omics and imaging techniques, numerous non-invasive serological assays have been generated and developed. On the basis of these developments, non-invasive biomarkers and imaging techniques have been combined to increase diagnostic accuracy. This review provides information for the diagnosis and assessment of NAFLD/NASH in clinical practice going forward and may assist the clinician in making an early and accurate diagnosis and in proposing a cost-effective patient surveillance. We discuss newly identified and validated non-invasive diagnostic methods from biopsy-confirmed NAFLD patient studies and their implementation in clinical practice, encompassing NAFLD/NASH diagnosis and differentiation, fibrosis assessment, and disease progression monitoring. A series of tests, including 20-carboxy arachidonic acid (20-COOH AA) and 13,14-dihydro-15-keto prostaglandin D2 (dhk PGD2), were found to be potentially the most accurate non-invasive tests for diagnosing NAFLD. Additionally, the Three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (3D-MRE), combination of the FM-fibro index and Liver stiffness measurement (FM-fibro LSM index) and the machine learning algorithm (MLA) tests are more accurate than other tests in assessing liver fibrosis. However, it is essential to use bigger cohort studies to corroborate a number of non-invasive diagnostic tests with extremely elevated diagnostic values.

ABSTRACT

Biochar produced from bio-wastes has been widely used to promote the performance of anaerobic digestion. Waste activated sludge (WAS) is considered as a kind of popular precursor for biochar preparation, but the abundant resources in WAS were neglected previously. In this study, the roles of biochar prepared from raw, pretreated, and fermented sludge on anaerobic digestion were investigated. That is, parts of carbon sources and nutrients like polysaccharides, proteins, and phosphorus were firstly recovered after sludge pretreatment or fermentation, and then the sludge residuals were used as raw material to prepare biochar. The methane yield improved by 22.1% with adding the biochar (AK-BC) prepared by sludge residual obtained from alkaline pretreatment. Mechanism study suggested that the characteristics of AK-BC like specific surface area and defect levels were updated. Then, the conversion performance of intermediate metabolites and electro-activities of extracellular polymeric substances were up-regulated. As a result, the activity of electron transfer was increased with the presence of AK-BC, with increase ratio of 21.4%. In addition, the electroactive microorganisms like Anaerolineaceae and Methanosaeta were enriched with the presence of AK-BC, and the potential direct interspecies electron transfer was possibly established. Moreover, both aceticlastic and CO2-reducing methanogenesis pathways were improved by up-regulating related enzymes. Therefore, the proposed strategy can not only obtain preferred biochar but also recover abundant resources like carbon source, nutrients, and bioenergy.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Traditional Ki-67 evaluation in breast cancer (BC) via core needle biopsy is limited by repeatability and heterogeneity. The automated breast ultrasound system (ABUS) offers reproducibility but is constrained to morphological and echoic assessments. Radiomics and machine learning (ML) offer solutions, but their integration for improving Ki-67 predictive accuracy in BC remains unexplored. This study aims to enhance ABUS by integrating ML-assisted radiomics for Ki-67 prediction in BC, with a focus on both intratumoral and peritumoral regions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 936 BC patients, split into training (n = 655) and testing (n = 281) cohorts. Radiomics features were extracted from intra- and peritumoral regions via ABUS. Feature selection involved Z-score normalization, intraclass correlation, Wilcoxon rank sum tests, minimum redundancy maximum relevance, and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression. ML classifiers were trained and optimized for enhanced predictive accuracy. The interpretability of the optimized model was further augmented by employing Shapley additive explanations (SHAP). RESULTS: Of the 2632 radiomics features in each patient, 15 were significantly associated with Ki-67 levels. The support vector machine (SVM) was identified as the optimal classifier, with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values of 0.868 (training) and 0.822 (testing). SHAP analysis indicated that five peritumoral and two intratumoral features, along with age and lymph node status, were key determinants in the predictive model. CONCLUSION: Integrating ML with ABUS-based radiomics effectively enhances Ki-67 prediction in BC, demonstrating the SVM model's strong performance with both radiomics and clinical factors.

ABSTRACT

Osimertinib is a third-generation covalent EGFR inhibitor that is used in treating non-small cell lung cancer. First-generation EGFR inhibitors were found to elicit pro-differentiation effect on acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells in preclinical studies, but clinical trials yielded mostly negative results. Here, we report that osimertinib selectively induced apoptosis of CD34+ leukemia stem/progenitor cells but not CD34- cells in EGFR-negative AML and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Covalent binding of osimertinib to CD34 at cysteines 199 and 177 and suppression of Src family kinases (SFK) and downstream STAT3 activation contributed to osimertinib-induced cell death. SFK and STAT3 inhibition induced synthetic lethality with osimertinib in primary CD34+ cells. CD34 expression was elevated in AML cells compared with their normal counterparts. Genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic profiling identified mutation and gene expression signatures of patients with AML with high CD34 expression, and univariate and multivariate analyses indicated the adverse prognostic significance of high expression of CD34. Osimertinib treatment induced responses in AML patient-derived xenograft models that correlated with CD34 expression while sparing normal CD34+ cells. Clinical responses were observed in two patients with CD34high AML who were treated with osimertinib on a compassionate-use basis. These findings reveal the therapeutic potential of osimertinib for treating CD34high AML and CML and describe an EGFR-independent mechanism of osimertinib-induced cell death in myeloid leukemia. SIGNIFICANCE: Osimertinib binds CD34 and selectively kills CD34+ leukemia cells to induce remission in preclinical models and patients with AML with a high percentage of CD34+ blasts, providing therapeutic options for myeloid leukemia patients.

INTRODUCTION: TFEB-altered renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a rare entity characterized by the rearrangement of the TFEB gene or TFEB amplified. The therapeutic implications and long-term survival of TFEB-altered RCC remain unclear, especially for metastatic cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current study initially enrolled 7604 consecutive RCC patients at our center and a total of 248 patients were selected for FISH and immunohistochemistry (IHC) analysis. Eventually, eighteen TFEB-altered RCC patients were identified. We then reported the clinical, morphological, IHC, and radiological features of these cases. RESULTS: The median age at initial diagnosis was 45 years, ranging from 18 years to 66 years. The majority of the TFEB-altered RCC patients were male (61.1%), with localized disease (T1-2N0M0, 77.8%). The median split TFEB fluorescent signal was 24%, ranging from 15%-80%. The morphological characteristics of TFEB-altered RCC were variable, with acinar, papillary, solid, or nest patterns. IHC and magnetic resonance imaging features of TFEB-altered RCC were nonspecific. Nine patients with localized disease received partial nephrectomy and five patients with localized disease received radical nephrectomy. During the median follow-up of 67 months, no signs of recurrence or metastasis were found in these patients. Two patients had distant metastasis and received axitinib plus PD-1 immunotherapy. One of them died at 40-month follow-up and another still alive at 88-month follow-up. CONCLUSION: TFEB-altered RCC is an extremely rare variant, exhibited mixed morphological characteristics. The radiological feature lack specificity, resembling clear cell RCC or papillary RCC. Genetic analyses including FISH analysis is crucial in the diagnosis of TFEB-altered RCC. For localized TFEB-altered RCC, both radical nephrectomy and partial nephrectomy conferred satisfactory prognosis. For metastatic TFEB-altered RCC, immunotherapy-based drug combinations could be a promising treatment strategy.

ABSTRACT

The 2023 update of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) Clinical Guidelines for Gastric Cancer focuses on standardizing cancer diagnosis and treatment in China, reflecting the latest advancements in evidence-based medicine, healthcare resource availability, and precision medicine. These updates address the differences in epidemiological characteristics, clinicopathological features, tumor biology, treatment patterns, and drug selections between Eastern and Western gastric cancer patients. Key revisions include a structured template for imaging diagnosis reports, updated standards for molecular marker testing in pathological diagnosis, and an elevated recommendation for neoadjuvant chemotherapy in stage III gastric cancer. For advanced metastatic gastric cancer, the guidelines introduce new recommendations for immunotherapy, anti-angiogenic therapy and targeted drugs, along with updated management strategies for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive and deficient DNA mismatch repair (dMMR)/microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) patients. Additionally, the guidelines offer detailed screening recommendations for hereditary gastric cancer and an appendix listing drug treatment regimens for various stages of gastric cancer. The 2023 CSCO Clinical Guidelines for Gastric Cancer updates are based on both Chinese and international clinical research and expert consensus to enhance their applicability and relevance in clinical practice, particularly in the heterogeneous healthcare landscape of China, while maintaining a commitment to scientific rigor, impartiality, and timely revisions.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal bisphenol exposure has been reported to be associated with lower birth weight and obesity-related indicators in early childhood. These findings warrant an investigation of the relationship between prenatal bisphenol exposure and the dynamic growth of offspring. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship of maternal bisphenol concentration in urine with the body mass index (BMI) growth trajectory of children aged up to two years and to identify the critical exposure periods. METHODS: A total of 826 mother-offspring pairs were recruited from Wuhan Children's Hospital between November 2013 and March 2015. Maternal urine samples collected during the first, second, and third trimesters were analyzed for bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S, and bisphenol F (BPF) concentrations. Measurements of length and weight were taken at 0, 1, 3, 6, 8, 12, 18, and 24 months. Children's BMI was standardized using the World Health Organization reference, and group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify BMI growth trajectories. The associations between prenatal bisphenol exposure and BMI growth trajectory patterns were assessed using multinomial logistic regression models. RESULTS: The BMI growth trajectories of the 826 children were categorized into four patterns: low-stable (n = 134, 16.2%), low-increasing (n = 142, 17.2%), moderate-stable (n = 350, 42.4%), and moderate-increasing (n = 200, 24.2%). After adjusting for potential confounders, we observed that prenatal exposure to BPA during the second trimester [odds ratio (OR) = 2.20, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.09-4.43] and BPF during the third trimester (OR = 3.28, 95% CI = 1.55-6.95) at the highest quartile concentration were associated with an increased likelihood of the low-increasing BMI trajectory. Furthermore, in the subgroup analysis by infant sex, the positive association between the highest quartile of prenatal average urinary BPF concentration during the whole pregnancy and the low-increasing BMI trajectory was found only in girls (OR = 2.82, 95% CI = 1.04-7.68). CONCLUSION: Our study findings suggest that prenatal exposure to BPA and BPF (a commonly used substitute for BPA) is associated with BMI growth trajectories in offspring during the first two years, increasing the likelihood of the low-increasing pattern. ABSTRACT

Women with body weight dissatisfaction (BWD) have long-term negative assessments of their body weight, which are often associated with poor eating behavior. In this study, we investigated the effect of body-related information on the food cue processing and attention of women with BWD. Sixty-eight women were recruited and assigned to either a BWD (NPSS-F > 2) (n = 32) or a no body weight dissatisfaction (NBWD) group (NPSS-F < 1) (n = 36). We measured attentional bias to food cues (high- and low-calorie) with a food probe task after exposure to body-related information and recorded eye tracking data. Body-related images were presented prior to a pair of stimulus images (food-neutral or neutral-neutral). Body-related information and food type were repeated measure factors in our study. Our results showed that the first fixation duration bias for high-calorie foods was significantly longer than for low-calorie foods after exposure to overweight cues in the BWD group. Compared with the NBWD group, the BWD group showed longer first fixation duration bias for high-calorie foods after exposure to overweight cues. The direction for high-calorie foods was significantly more often than that for low-calorie foods in the BWD group after exposure to body-related information. Our findings suggest that compared to women with NBWD, women with BWD may be more susceptible to body-related information, resulting in increased attention to high-calorie foods.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a potentially fatal neurological disease with severe complications and a high disability rate. An increasing number of animal experimental studies support the therapeutic effect of quercetin, which is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant bioflavonoid. OBJECTIVE: This paper reviewed the therapeutic effect of quercetin on a rat SCI model and summarized the relevant mechanistic research. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Science Direct, WanFang Data, SinoMed databases, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the Vip Journal Integration Platform were searched from their inception to April 2023 for animal experiments applying quercetin to treat SCI. STUDY SELECTION: Based on the PICOS criteria, a total of 18 eligible studies were included, of which 14 were high quality. RESULTS: In this study, there was a gradual increase in effect based on the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) score after three days (p < 0.0001). Furthermore, gender differences also appeared in the efficacy of quercetin; males performed better than females (p = 0.008). Quercetin was also associated with improved inclined plane test score (p = 0.008). In terms of biochemical indicators, meta-analysis showed that MDA (p < 0.0001) and MPO (p = 0.0002) were significantly reduced after quercetin administration compared with the control group, and SOD levels were increased (p = 0.004). Mechanistically, quercetin facilitates the inhibition of oxidative stress, inflammation, autophagy and apoptosis that occur after SCI. CONCLUSIONS: Generally, this systematic review suggests that quercetin has a neuroprotective effect on SCI.

ABSTRACT

Potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) has been extensively employed to promote short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) because of its potent oxidizing property and formation of alkaline hydrolyzed products (potassium hydroxide, KOH and ferric hydroxide, Fe(OH)3). However, whether K2FeO4 actually works as dual functions of both an oxidizing agent and an alkalinity enhancer during the anaerobic fermentation process remains uncertain. This study aims to identify the contributions of hydrolyzed products of K2FeO4 on SCFAs production. The results showed that K2FeO4 did not execute dual functions of oxidization and alkalinity in promoting SCFAs production. The accumulation of SCFAs using K2FeO4 treatment (183 mg COD/g volatile suspended solids, VSS) was less than that using either KOH (192 mg COD/g VSS) or KOH & Fe(OH)3 (210 mg COD/g VSS). The mechanism analysis indicated that the synergistic effects caused by oxidization and alkalinity properties of K2FeO4 did not happen on solubilization, hydrolysis, and acidogenesis stages, and the inhibition effect caused by K2FeO4 on methanogenesis stage at the initial phase was more severe than that of its hydrolyzed products. It was also noted that the inhibition effects of K2FeO4 and its hydrolyzed products on the methanogenesis stage could be relieved during a longer sludge retention time, and the final methane yields using KOH or KOH & Fe(OH)3 treatment were higher than that using K2FeO4, further confirming that dual functions of K2FeO4 were not obtained. Therefore, K2FeO4 may not be an alternative strategy for enhancing the production of SCFAs from WAS compared to its alkaline hydrolyzed products. Regarding the strong oxidization property of K2FeO4, more attention could be turned to the fates of refractory organics in the anaerobic fermentation of WAS.

ABSTRACT

A metasurface is a two-dimensional structure with a subwavelength thickness that can be used to control electromagnetic waves. The integration of optical fibers and metasurfaces has received much attention in recent years. This integrated device has high flexibility and versatility. We propose an optical device based on fiber-integrated metasurfaces in the mid-infrared, which uses a hollow core anti-resonant fiber (HC-ARF) to confine light transmission in an air core. The integrated bilayer metasurfaces at the fiber end face can achieve transmissive modulation of the optical field emitted from the HC-ARF, and the Fano resonance excited by the metasurface can also be used to achieve refractive index (RI) sensing with high sensitivity and high figure of merit (FOM) in the mid-infrared band. In addition, we introduce a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer between the two metasurfaces; thus, we can achieve tunable function through temperature. This provides an integrated fiber multifunctional optical device in the mid-infrared band, which is expected to play an important role in the fields of high-power mid-infrared lasers, mid-infrared laser biomedicine, and gas trace detection.

ABSTRACT

Anaerobic digestion is widely employed for the treatment of waste activated sludge (WAS) due to its advantages like simultaneous energy recovery and sludge stabilization, promoting carbon-neutral operation of wastewater treatment plants. Natural zeolite, a low-cost and eco-friendly additive, has the potential to improve methane production from anaerobic digestion. This study investigated the effects of natural zeolite on anaerobic digestion when the substrate was WAS. It was found that methane production potential in response to natural zeolite was dosage-dependent. The optimal dosage was 0.1 g zeolite/g volatile suspended solids (VSS), with a methane yield of 181.89 ± 6.75 mL/g VSS, which increased by 20.1% compared to that of the control. Although the methane yields with other dosages of natural zeolite were higher than that of control, they were lesser than that with 0.1 g zeolite/g VSS. Natural zeolite affected transfer and conversion of proteins much more than polysaccharides in liquid phase and extracellular polymeric substances. In anaerobic digestion, natural zeolite had with little effects on WAS solubilization, while it improved hydrolysis, acidification, and methanogenesis. The dosages of natural zeolite did have significant effects on bacterial communities in biofilm rather than suspension, while the archaeal communities in biofilm and suspension were all greatly related to natural zeolite dosages. The developed biofilms promoted richness and functionality of microbial communities. The syntrophic metabolism relationships between methanogens and bacteria were improved, which was proved by selective enrichment of Methanosarcina, Syntrophomonas, and Petrimonas. The findings of this work provided some new solutions for promoting methane production from WAS, and the roles of natural zeolite in anaerobic digestion.
