ABSTRACT

This meta-analysis investigates the effect of dexmedetomidine on postoperative wound healing in neurosurgical patients. A thorough literature search resulted in the selection of seven studies from an initial pool of 1546 records. The analysis focused on wound healing outcomes, evaluated by the Redness, Oedema, Ecchymosis, Discharge, Approximation (REEDA) scale and the Manchester Scar Scale (MSS). Results indicated significant improvements in the dexmedetomidine group: the REEDA scale scores at day seven post-surgery showed a Standardized Mean Difference group (SMD = -16.18, 95% CI: [-22.30, -10.06], p < 0.01), and the MSS scores at 3 months post-operation demonstrated an (SMD = -8.95, 95% CI: [-14.27, -3.62], p < 0.01). These findings suggest that dexmedetomidine may enhance wound healing and reduce scar formation in neurosurgical patients. Bias assessment indicated a low risk of bias across the studies.

ABSTRACT

A novel, to the best of our knowledge, type of multi-focal all-dielectric grating lens is proposed in this work, and focusing characteristics of cylindrical vector beams through the lens are investigated in detail. Based on the negative refraction mechanism of negative-first-order diffraction and Fermat's principle, a multi-focal lens is designed. By analyzing the diffraction effect of the grating, the essential factor that affects the focus quality is found. Through a two-step optimization process, secondary foci and the focal displacement of primary foci caused by high-order diffractions are overcome, and the quality of the focal field is significantly improved. This work provides a reference for micro-lens design for focus modulation, and the research results also have potential applications in the fields of light-field manipulation and optical tweezers.

ABSTRACT

In order to investigate the effect of Wolbachia on fitness of their hosts, the biological characteristics of a primarily parthenogenetic line and a bisexual restored line (obtained by antibiotic treatment) of Trichogramma pretiosum were compared in the laboratory. Results indicated that both the mean longevity and fecundity of parthenogenetic line (14.2 d and 165 eggs/female) were significantly higher than those in bisexual restored line (8.4 d and 124.2 eggs/female). Both lines of T. pretiosum had the highest daily fecundity (23.3 eggs/female for parthenogenetic line and 19.8 eggs/female for bisexual restored line) on the first day during their reproduction period, and their survival rate and daily fecundity decreased gradually with age; however, the survival rate and daily fecundity of the parthenogenetic line were always higher than those of bisexual restored line, during the entire experimental period. There was no significant difference in emergence rate and deformity rate between the two T. pretiosum lines. The life-table parameter results indicated that net reproduction rate (R0) and mean generation time (T) in parthenogenetic line (133 and 16.8) were significantly higher than those in bisexual restored line (61.7 and 15.5); intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) and finite rate of increase (λ) in parthenogenetic line (0.29 and 1.34) were higher than those in bisexual restored line (0.26 and 1.3). Based on these results, it can be confirmed that the removal of Wolbachia in the parthenogenetic line had an adverse effect on fitness of T. pretiosum.

ABSTRACT

Limb ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) can induce inflammation, causing acute lung injury. The Toll­like receptor 4 (TLR4)/NF­κB pathway plays an important role in acute and chronic inflammatory disorders. Several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of acupuncture in lung inflammatory injury. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the mechanism underlying the protective effect of electroacupuncture (EA) against lung injury induced by limb I/R. EA applied at the Zusanli and Sanyinjiao acupoints attenuated lung injury and decreased the secretion of inflammatory factors such as tumor necrosis factor­α, interleukin (IL)­1, IL­6 and myeloperoxidase. Moreover, the expression levels of TLR4 and NF­κB were suppressed by EA. Thus, the present findings suggested that EA can reduce pulmonary inflammation induced by limb I/R injury, possibly via the inhibition of the TLR4/NF­κB pathway.

ABSTRACT

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory reaction caused by infection. Multiple organ failure ultimately leads to high morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, therapies against these responses have been unsuccessful due to the insufficient underlying pathophysiological evidence. Protein interacting with C-kinase 1 (PICK1) has received considerable attention because of its important physiological functions in many tissues. However, its role in sepsis-induced acute lung injury (ALI) is unclear. In this study, we used cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) to establish a septic model and found that decreased microtubule-associated protein-1light chain 3 (LC3)-II/LC3-I in PICK1-/- septic mice was caused by autophagy dysfunction. Consistently, the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) from PICK1-/- mice showed the accumulation of autophagosomes as well. However, more serious damage was caused by PICK1 deficiency indicating that the disrupted autophagic flux was harmful to sepsis-induced ALI. We also observed that it was the impaired lysosomal function that mediated autophagic flux blockade, and the autophagy progress was relevant to PI3K-Akt-mTOR pathway. These findings will aid in the potential development of PICK1 with novel evidence of autophagy in sepsis treatment and prevention.
