ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Intussusception is one of the most common acute abdominal conditions in pediatric patients, and if left untreated, it may result in intestinal necrosis and even death. The etiology of the disease is unknown and may be related to a variety of factors, and there are only limited reports of small bowel necrosis secondary to abnormal Peyer's node hyperplasia after MMR vaccination. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we present two infants who had an abnormal proliferation of Peyer's nodes secondary to intussusception eventually leading to small bowel necrosis after MMR vaccination. CONCLUSIONS: Intestinal necrosis and infectious shock are the most common causes of infant mortality, and early detection and management are critical.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a type of breast tumor with a poor prognosis because it lacks or expresses low levels of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2). TNBC is more common in middle-aged and older women, and cases of TNBC in children are rarely reported. This is the only case of childhood SBC in our hospital in more than 70 years, and the disease is extremely rare internationally. We analyzed and studied the disease and TNBC from both clinical and pathological aspects and found that SBC is very different from TNBC. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of secretory breast cancer (SBC), a subtype of TNBC, in an 8-year-old girl from our institution. The child presented with a single mass in the left breast only, with no skin rupture and no enlargement of the surrounding lymph nodes. The child underwent two surgeries and was followed up for one year with a good prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: SBC is highly prevalent among the multiple pathological types of pediatric breast cancer. Almost all pediatric SBC patients are characterized by the ETV6-NTRK3 fusion gene, which has a good prognosis and a 10-year survival rate of more than 90% when compared with other TNBC subtypes. According to the patient, we performed local mass resection and a postoperative pathological diagnosis of SBC (a subtype of BL-TNBC). The TNBC case had a good prognosis and differed from basal TNBC in several aspects, including clinical presentation, treatment, and prognosis. It is necessary to exclude SBC from BL-type TNBC, enhance understanding of the disease, and individualize the treatment plan, so as to avoid medical errors.

ABSTRACT

Thermal hydrolysis pretreatment could release organic sufficiently from solid into liquid phase to accelerate the high solid sludge anaerobic digestion. Thus, up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) could be a promising energy recovery process to treat thermal hydrolyzed sludge dewatering liquor with significantly augmented the organic loading rate (OLR). In this study, its performance was investigated using a lab-scale UASB to treat sludge dewatering liquor after 165 °C, 30 min thermal hydrolysis pretreatment. The results show that 85.57% of the organic in thermal hydrolyzed sludge dewatering liquor could be converted to methane. The UASB adapts to high OLR stably, and the COD removal efficiency was 71.98 ± 1.95% at OLR of 18.35 ± 0.78 kgCOD·(m3·d)-1, and the gap between the maximum potential and experimental methane production yields could be observed during different OLRs. It could be explained as the methanogenesis rate decreased due to the shift of dominant pathway from acetoclastic methanogenesis to syntrophic acetate oxidation following hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. Methanospirillum became the dominant methanogen with the increase of OLR. In addition, the methane production yield and rate would be hindered till the ammonia nitrogen concentration exceeds 4 g·L-1. Direct interspecies electron transfer could be promising methods to improve UASB performance treating thermal hydrolyzed dewatering liquor.
