ABSTRACT

We investigate the spectro-temporal mode property of the photon pairs generated via interspatial-mode spontaneous four-wave mixing (FWM) in a few-mode fiber (FMF) that supports two linearly polarized spatial modes in the 1550 nm telecom band. The two pulsed pumps for the process are in distinct spatial modes, while the created signal and idler photon pairs are also occupying different spatial modes. By exploiting the unique inter-mode phase matching condition in the FMF, we can tailor the spectro-temporal mode structure of the photon pairs by changing the pulse duration (spectral bandwidth) of the two pumps. Especially, photon pairs with a nearly round-shaped factorable joint spectrum are experimentally realized. The techniques are valuable for generating and manipulating quantum states in multi-mode waveguides and exploiting the spatial degree of freedom in quantum information processing.

ABSTRACT

Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disease that often co-occurs with psychological morbidities such as anxiety and depression, and psychosocial issues also lead psoriasis patients to avoid other people. However, the precise mechanism underlying the comorbidity of psoriasis and anxiety is unknown. Also, whether the social avoidance phenomenon seen in human patients also exists in psoriasis-like animal models remains unknown. In the present study, anxiety-like behaviours and social avoidance-like behaviours were observed in an imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like C57-BL6 mouse model along with typical psoriasis-like dermatitis and itch-like behaviours. The 11.7T resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging showed differences in brain regions between the model and control group, and voxel-based morphometry showed that the grey matter volume changed in the basal forebrain region, anterior commissure intrabulbar and striatum in the psoriasis-like mice. Seed-based resting state functional connectivity analysis revealed connectivity changes in the amygdala, periaqueductal gray, raphe nuclei and lateral septum. We conclude that the imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like C57-BL6 mouse model is well suited for mechanistic studies and for performing preclinical therapeutic trials for treating anxiety and pathological social avoidance in psoriasis patients.

ABSTRACT

Desmoid fibromatosis (DF) is a clonal proliferative disorder of myofibroblasts, which arises, with a low incidence, in soft tissue, including within the abdomen. The incidence of DF is associated with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), and is more common following FAP surgery. It is rare for a patient to make his/her first visit to hospital due to DF symptoms associated with FAP. In the present report, a case of mesenteric DF associated with FAP is described. This case also had incomplete intestinal obstruction due to DF. By summarizing previous studies examining DF and FAP treatment, combined with the disease characteristics of this patient, the clinical treatment strategy for DF associated with FAP was explored.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Among rural Chinese patients with non-communicable diseases (NCDs), low socioeconomic status increases the risk of developing NCDs and associated financial burdens in paying for medicines and treatments. Despite the chronic disease medicine reimbursement policy of the local government in Nantong City, China, various barriers prevent patients from registering for and benefitting from the policy. This study aims to develop a behavior science-based intervention program for promoting the adoption of the policy and to evaluate the effectiveness of the program compared with usual practices. METHODS: Barriers and opportunities affecting stakeholders in adopting the policy were identified through contextual research and summarized through behavior mapping. The intervention is designed to target these barriers and opportunities through behavior science theories and will be evaluated through a 6-month cluster randomized controlled trial in Tongzhou District, Nantong, China. A total of 30 villages from two townships are randomized in a 1:1 ratio to either the intervention or the control arm (usual practices). Village doctors in the intervention arm (1) receive systematic training on policy details, registration procedures, and intervention protocol, (2) promote the policy and encourage registration, (3) follow up with patients in the first, third, and sixth months after the intervention, and (4) receive financial incentives based on performance. The primary outcome is policy registration rate and the secondary outcomes include the number of patients registering for the policy, medical costs saved, frequency of village doctor visits, and health measures such as blood pressure and glucose levels. DISCUSSION: This study is one of very few that aims to promote adoption of NCDs outpatient medication reimbursement policies, and the first study to evaluate the impact of these policies on patients' financial and physical wellbeing in China. The simple, feasible, and scalable intervention is designed based on the theories of behavior science and is applicable to similar low-income regions nationwide where outpatient medical costs remain a financial burden for patients. ABSTRACT

Ependymoblastoma is a rare embryonal neoplasm of the nervous system, and the entity is even rare with distant metastasis. This case can help refine the existing literature and provide lessons for the management of other patients with ependymoblastoma. The present case concerns an adolescent with supratentorial ependymoblastoma, who received gross-total resection (GTR), postoperative radiotherapy, and six cycles of chemotherapy, with disease-free survival (DFS) of about 5.3 years. Subsequently, pulmonary metastasis occurred, but no intracranial lesion was found. Finally, combined treatment with radiotherapy and chemotherapy significantly reduced the lung lesions, with progression-free survival (PFS) of 10 months and long-term survival of 6.3 years. This case indicates that the lung metastases of ependymoblastoma are relatively sensitive to radiation, but lung metastases have not completely disappeared. Perhaps, increasing the radiation dose to lung metastases can improve the efficacy, which is worth exploring.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Psoriasis is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease that is prone to recurrence, and the proinflammatory factor, cysteine-rich protein 61 (Cyr61), is important in its pathophysiology. Long-term clinical practice has shown that Sancao Formula (SC), a Chinese herbal compound, is effective in the treatment of psoriasis, but the precise mechanism remains unknown. In this study, we investigate the mechanism by which SC extract alleviates imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis. METHODS: The expression of Cyr61 in psoriatic lesions and normal healthy skin was detected using immunohistochemical analysis to investigate the biological role of Cyr61 in models of psoriatic inflammation. A psoriatic mouse model was established by topical application of IMQ, and the effect of topical application of SC extract was evaluated using the psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) score, hematoxylin-eosin staining, and histopathological features of the skin. Next, a HaCaT cell inflammation model was established using interferon-γ (IFN-γ), and the effect of SC extract on the mRNA and protein levels of Cyr61 and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) was confirmed using Western blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses. RESULTS: Immunohistochemical staining showed that the expression of Cyr61 in psoriatic lesions was higher than that in normal skin samples (78.26% vs 41.18%, P < 0.05), and the number of Cyr61-positive cells in psoriatic lesions was also significantly higher than in normal skin (18.66 ± 2.51 vs 4.33 ± 1.52, P < 0.05). Treatment in mice with IMQ-induced psoriasis showed that SC extract could significantly improve the inflammatory phenotype, PASI score (10.875 ± 0.744 vs 3.875 ± 0.582, P < 0.05), and pathological features compared with those in IMQ model group; SC treatment was also associated with decreased levels of Cyr61 and ICAM-1. In the IFN-γ-induced inflammatory cell model, the mRNA and protein levels of Cyr61 and ICAM-1 were upregulated, while the SC extract downregulated the levels of Cyr61 and ICAM-1. CONCLUSION: The results provide a theoretical basis for the involvement of Cyr61 in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, and suggest that SC should be used to target Cyr61 for the prevention of psoriasis recurrence.

ABSTRACT

Hyperglycemia during pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) constitute an important public health problem due to their prevalence and long-term health consequences both for the mother and offspring. Results from studies in rodents and some clinical investigations suggest that meal time manipulation may be a potential lifestyle approach against conditions involving perturbations in glucose homeostasis (e.g., hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, diabetes, etc.). The purpose of this review is to summarize and critically evaluate the current literature on the role of meal timing and daily nutrient distribution on glycemic control during pregnancy. Only a small number of mostly observational studies have assessed the role of meal timing in glucose homeostasis during pregnancy. Food consumption earlier in the day and short-term fasting with adequate nutrient intake may improve glycemic control during the second and third trimester of gestation. Considering that the field of chrononutrition is still in its infancy and many questions remain unanswered, future prospective and carefully designed studies are needed to better understand the role of meal timing in metabolic homeostasis and maternal and fetal health outcomes during pregnancy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Intermittent fasting has been proposed as a potential nutrition approach against obesity and metabolic disease. Although data from studies in rodents convincingly support the antiobesity and cardiometabolic benefits of intermittent fasting, its effects in human health are still debatable. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have examined the effect of two intermittent fasting approaches, that is, alternate day fasting (ADF) and time-restricted eating (TRE), on weight loss and cardiometabolic risk factors. ADF seems to be an equally effective weight loss approach to caloric restriction, but adherence to ADF is more challenging. ADF improves cardiometabolic risk factors, whereas it may have superior metabolic benefits compared to caloric restriction in people with insulin resistance. TRE with ad libitum food intake is well tolerated and induces 2-4% weight loss in approximatively 3 months. Additionally, TRE may have metabolic benefits particularly in people with metabolically abnormal obesity even without weight loss. SUMMARY: Intermittent fasting is a promising nutritional approach against obesity and its related metabolic diseases. Further research is needed to: i) establish the long-term effectiveness of TRE in weight loss and metabolic health, ii) improve the long-term adherence to ADF and investigate its weight loss independent effects in metabolic health, and iii) determine the mechanisms underlying the potential cardiometabolic benefits of intermittent fasting in humans.

ABSTRACT

The accuracy and reliability of volatile organic compound (VOC) emission data are essential for assessing emission characteristics and their potential impact on air quality and human health. This paper describes a new method for determining VOC emission data by multipoint sampling from various process units inside a large-scale refinery. We found that the emission characteristics of various production units were related to the raw materials, products, and production processes. Saturated alkanes accounted for the largest fraction in the continuous catalytic reforming and wastewater treatment units (48.0% and 59.2%, respectively). In the propene recovery unit and catalytic cracking unit, alkenes were the most dominant compounds, and propene provided the largest contributions (57.8% and 23.0%, respectively). In addition, n-decane (12.6%), m,p-xylene (12.4%), and n-nonane (8.9%) were the main species in the normal production process of the delayed coking unit. Assessments of photochemical reactivity and carcinogenic risk were carried out, and the results indicate that VOC emissions from the propene recovery unit and catalytic cracking unit should be controlled to reduce the ozone formation potential; in addition, alkenes are precedent-controlled pollutants. The cancer risk assessments reveal that 1,2-dibromoethane, benzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, and chloroform were the dominant risk contributors, and their values were much higher than the standard threshold value of 1.0 × 10-6 but lower than the significant risk value defined by the US Supreme Court. Based on the VOC composition and a classification algorithm, the samples were classified into eight main groups that corresponded to different process units in the petroleum refinery. In conclusion, this work provides valuable data for investigating process-specific emission characteristics of VOCs and performing associated assessments of photochemical reactivity and carcinogenic risk in petrochemical refineries.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate light extinction contributions of aerosol chemical constituents and their impacts on atmospheric visibility, the PM2.5 and its chemical components, light scattering (bsp) and absorption (bap) were continuously measured in Wuhan from January to February 2018. The average of PM2.5 concentration, bsp and bap were 96.5 ±â€¯13.7 µg m-3, 564 ±â€¯124 Mm-1 and 44 ±â€¯8 Mm-1 during polluted days, respectively, which was about 2.0, 2.1 and 1.6 times higher than those of clean days, respectively. Compared with the clean days, the increase of the mass concentrations of SNA (SO42-, NO3-, NH4+) during polluted days was higher than those of organic (OC) and elemental (EC) carbon, indicated the increase of SNA was the main cause of air pollution. The PM2.5 concentration threshold was 66 µg m-3, corresponding to the visibility lower than 10 km. The revised Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) algorithm was used to reconstruct the light extinction coefficient (bext) in Wuhan. The sum of light extinction coefficients of (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3 and organic matter (OM) accounted for 70.5% and 83.9% of bext during clean and polluted days, respectively. The backward trajectory and potential source contribution function (PSCF) analysis revealed that regional transport accounted for 55.6% of the total airflow, which originated from south, northwest and west of Wuhan. The increases of (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 concentrations, emitted from local vehicle exhaust and coal combustion, and their hygroscopic growth in ambient were the major causes of pollution in Wuhan.

ABSTRACT

In the last few years, due to the large amount of greenhouse gas emissions causing environmental issue like global warming, methods for the full consumption and utilization of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) have attracted great attention. In this study, a packed-bed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) coaxial reactor has been developed and applied to split CO2 into industrial fuel carbon monoxide (CO). Different packing materials (foam Fe, Al, and Ti) were placed into the discharge gap of the DBD reactor, and then CO2 conversion was investigated. The effects of power, flow velocity, and other discharge characteristics of CO2 conversion were studied to understand the influence of the filling catalysts on CO2 splitting. Experimental results showed that the filling of foam metals in the reactor caused changes in discharge characteristics and discharge patterns, from the original filamentary discharge to the current filamentary discharge as well as surface discharge. Compared with the maximum CO2 conversion of 21.15% and energy efficiency of 3.92% in the reaction tube without the foam metal materials, a maximum CO2 decomposition rate of 44.84%, 44.02%, and 46.61% and energy efficiency of 6.86%, 6.19%, and 8.85% were obtained in the reaction tubes packed with foam Fe, Al, and Ti, respectively. The CO2 conversion rate for reaction tubes filled with the foam metal materials was clearly enhanced compared to the non-packed tubes. It could be seen that the foam Ti had the best CO2 decomposition rate among the three foam metals. Furthermore, we used density functional theory to further verify the experimental results. The results indicated that CO2 adsorption had a lower activation energy barrier on the foam Ti surface. The theoretical calculation was consistent with the experimental results, which better explain the mechanism of CO2 decomposition.

ABSTRACT

Dielectric barrier discharge plasma is one of the most popular methods to generate nanthermal plasma, which is made up of a host of high-energy electrons, free radicals, chemically active ions and excited species, so it has the property of being prone to chemical reactions. Due to these unique advantages, the plasma technology has been widely used in the catalytic fields. Compared with the conventional method, the heterogeneous catalyst prepared by plasma technology has good dispersion and smaller particle size, and its catalytic activity, selectivity and stability are significantly improved. In addition, the interaction between plasma and catalyst can achieve synergistic effects, so the catalytic effect is further improved. The review mainly introduces the characteristics of dielectric barrier discharge plasma, development trend and its recent advances in catalysis; then, we sum up the advantages of using plasma technology to prepare catalysts. At the same time, the synergistic effect of plasma technology combined with catalyst on methanation, CH4 reforming, NOx decomposition, H2O2 synthesis, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, volatile organic compounds removal, catalytic sterilization, wastewater treatment and degradation of pesticide residues are discussed. Finally, the properties of plasma in catalytic reaction are summarized, and the application prospect of plasma in the future catalytic field is prospected.

ABSTRACT

A novel phosphorus-silicon flame retardant (P5PSQ) was prepared by bonding phosphate to silicon-based polysilsesquioxane (PSQ) and used as flame retardant of poly (lactic acid) (PLA). The results show that PLA with 10 wt % P5PSQ has a limiting oxygen index (LOI) 24.1%, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) of PLA decrease 21.8% and 25.2% compared to neat PLA in cone calorimetric test, indicating that P5PSQ shows better flame retardancy in comparison to PSQ. Furthermore, the study for the morphology and composition of carbon residue after the combustion of PLA and the gas release of PLA during combustion illustrate that P5PSQ has flame retardancy in condensed phase and gas phase simultaneously. In condensed phase, phosphorus from phosphate promotes the formation of more stable and better carbon layer containing Si and P, which inhibits the transfer of heat and oxygen in the combustion. In gas phase, the phosphate in P5PSQ emits phosphorus-containing compound that can restrain the release of C-O containing products, which may have effective flame retardancy for PLA in gas phase to a certain extent. In one word, P5PSQ is denoted as a good phosphorus-silicon synergistic flame-retardant.

ABSTRACT

The dye wastewater produced in the printing and dyeing industry causes serious harm to the natural environment. TiO2 usually shows photocatalytic degradation of dye under the irradiation ultravilet light rather than visible light. In this work, a large number of oxygen vacancies and Ti3+ defects were generated on the surface of the TiO2 nanoparticles via Ar plasma. Compared with pristine TiO2 nanoparticles, the as-obtained Ar plasma-treated TiO2 (Ar-TiO2) nanoparticles make the energy band gap reduce from 3.21 eV to 3.17 eV and exhibit enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes. The Ar-TiO2 obtained exhibited excellent degradation properties of methyl orange (MO); the degradation rate under sunlight irradiation was 99.6% in 30 min, and the photocatalytic performance was about twice that of the original TiO2 nanoparticles (49%). The degradation rate under visible light (λ > 400 nm) irradiation was 89% in 150 min, and the photocatalytic performance of the Ar-TiO2 was approaching ~4 times higher than that of the original TiO2 nanoparticles (23%). Ar-TiO2 also showed good degradation performance in degrading rhodamine B (Rho B) and methylene blue (MB). We believe that this plasma strategy provides a new method for improving the photocatalytic activity of other metal oxides.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common liver malignancy, and ranks the fifth most prevalent malignant tumors worldwide. In general, HCC are detected until the disease is at an advanced stage and may miss the best chance for treatment. Thus, elucidating the molecular mechanisms is critical to clinical diagnosis and treatment for HCC. The purpose of this study was to identify dysregulated pathways of great potential functional relevance in the progression of HCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Microarray data of 72 pairs of tumor and matched non-tumor surrounding tissues of HCC were transformed to gene expression data. Differentially expressed genes (DEG) between patients and normal controls were identified using Linear Models for Microarray Analysis. Personalized dysregulated pathways were identified using individualized pathway aberrance score module. RESULTS: 169 differentially expressed genes (DEG) were obtained with |logFC|≥1.5 and P≤0.01. 749 dysregulated pathways were obtained with P≤0.01 in pathway statistics, and there were 93 DEG overlapped in the dysregulated pathways. After performing normal distribution analysis, 302 pathways with the aberrance probability≥0.5 were identified. By ranking pathway with aberrance probability, the top 20 pathways were obtained. Only three DEGs (TUBA1C, TPR, CDC20) were involved in the top 20 pathways. CONCLUSION: These personalized dysregulated pathways and overlapped genes may give new insights into the underlying biological mechanisms in the progression of HCC. Particular attention can be focused on them for further research.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Ghrelin was associated with several of cancers. The conflict results of SNPs with GHRL and GHSR gene were demonstrated in different studies. Thus, this meta-analysis is to evaluate the associations. METHODS: Systematic literature search was done on PubMed database up to October 2013. We used odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the strength of the association by a fixed-effect model and a random-effect model. RESULTS: A total of 7 studies, which included 3 studies for breast cancer, 2 for colorectal cancer, 1 for hepatocellular carcinoma, 1 for esophageal cancer and 1 for Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. When analyzed all the GHRL SNPs with all kinds of cancers, there was significantly difference with cancer patients compared with controls (Recessive model: OR 0.938, 95% CI 0.890-0.989, p=0.017), while no significant difference was existed in the additive model (OR 0.9903, 95% CI 0.957-1.024, p=0.558) and dominant model (OR 1.014, 95% CI 0.970-1.061, p=0.536). When analyzed all the GHSR SNPs with all kinds of cancers, no significant difference was observed. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the SNP with GHRL and GHSR might be weaker association with cancer risk, especially with breast cancer risk.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Tumor-stroma ratio (TSR) has been identified as a new and practicable prognostic histological characteristic of solid tumors. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of TSR in resected esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS: A total of 95 patients who underwent esophagectomy for ESCC were included in this study. TSR was assessed visually on the hematoxylin-eosin-stained tissue sections of surgical specimens by two independent observers. Patients with more than 50% intratumor stroma were quantified as the stroma-rich group and those with less than 50% as the stroma-poor group. RESULTS: No significant differences were observed in patient, tumor, and treatment characteristics between the stroma-rich and stroma-poor groups. The 3-year overall survival and disease-free survival rates were 64% and 57%, respectively, in the stroma-poor group, and 23% and 23%, respectively, in the stroma-rich group. Both 3-year overall and disease-free survival rates in the stroma-poor group were significantly better than those in the stroma-rich group (p < 0.01). In a multivariate analysis, TSR was identified as a highly significant prognostic factor for 3-year overall survival (hazard ratio 3.450; p = 0.001) and 3-year disease-free survival (hazard ratio 2.995; p = 0.001), independent of pTNM stage and radicality of the primary tumor. CONCLUSION: Stroma-rich tumors were associated with poor prognosis and an increased risk of relapse, which may serve as a new prognostic histological characteristic in ESCC. TSR is simple and quick to determine, is reproducible, and could be easily incorporated in routine histological evaluation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To establish a spectrophotometric determination method of bromine in the air of workplace. METHODS: Bromine in the air of workplace was absorbed by methyl orange solution, then determined by spectrophotometry. RESULTS: The range of the determination was 0.2 to 2.8 microg/ml, the linear equation was Y=0.0427X-0.0092, r=0.9996. The detection limit was 0.2 microg/ml. The minimum detectable concentration was 0.27 mg/m(3) for 7.5 L air sample. The relative standard deviations covered the range of 1.1% approximately 3.7%. The recovery rate was in the range of 93.6% to 97.2%. The sampling efficiency ranged from 93.5% to 100.0%. CONCLUSION: The method is available for the determination of bromine in the air of workplace.
