ABSTRACT

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are considered a promising candidate for next-generation energy storage devices due to the advantages of high theoretical specific capacity, abundant resources and being environmentally friendly. However, the severe shuttle effect of polysulfides causes the low utilization of active substances and rapid capacity fading, thus seriously limiting their practical application. The introduction of conductive polymer-based interlayers between cathodes and separators is considered to be an effective method to solve this problem because they can largely confine, anchor and convert the soluble polysulfides. In this review, the recent progress of conductive polymer-based interlayers used in LSBs is summarized, including free-standing conductive polymer-based interlayers, conductive polymer-based interlayer modified separators and conductive polymer-based interlayer modified sulfur electrodes. Furthermore, some suggestions on rational design and preparation of conductive polymer-based interlayers are put forward to highlight the future development of LSBs.

ABSTRACT

Teaching is a demanding profession and maintaining teacher wellbeing is significant in ensuring educational quality. However, teacher wellbeing is easily affected by educational reforms, and systematic research on this topic is still relatively rare. In China, with the enactment of the Double Reduction Policy in 2021, the job characteristics of primary and secondary school teachers have undergone various changes. Thus, the current study examined the new job characteristics that China's Double Reduction Policy imposed on the wellbeing of school teachers and their relationships with teachers' inner world (i.e., emotional regulation and mindset). A cross-sectional study was carried out from June to October 2022 across China, employing self-reporting questionnaires for data collection and analysis. With a random sample of 902 teachers, we investigated the associations between teacher wellbeing, job characteristics, emotional regulation strategies, and mindset. The results indicated that teachers showed a lower level of wellbeing after the educational reform. Higher job resources contributed positively to predicting teacher wellbeing, while higher job demands contributed negatively. Genuinely expressing had positive impacts on teacher wellbeing while surface acting had negative impacts and deep acting none. Mindset was found to affect emotional regulation strategies and teacher wellbeing simultaneously. These findings shed light on how teachers can appropriately regulate emotions and maintain wellbeing in the wake of educational reforms.

ABSTRACT

The differentiation of CD4+T cells is a crucial component of the immune response. The spleen and thymus, as immune organs, are closely associated with the differentiation and development of T cells. Previous studies have suggested that BAP31 may play a role in modulating T cell activation, but the specific impact of BAP31 on T cells through macrophages remains uncertain. In this study, we present evidence that BAP31 macrophage conditional knockout (BAP31-MCKO) mice display an enlarged spleen and thymus, accompanied by activated clustering and disrupted differentiation of CD4+T cells. In vitro co-culture studies were conducted to investigate the impact of BAP31-MCKO on the activation and differentiation of CD4+T cells. The examination of costimulatory molecule expression in BMDMs and RAW 264.7 cells, based on the endoplasmic reticulum function of BAP31, revealed an increase in the expression of antigen presenting molecules, particularly MHC-II molecule, in the absence of BAP31 in BMDMs or RAW264.7 cells. These findings suggest that BAP31 plays a role in the activation and differentiation of CD4+T cells by regulating the MHC class II molecule on macrophages. These results provide further support for the importance of BAP31 in developing interaction between macrophages and CD4+T cells.

ABSTRACT

In cardiovascular diseases, myocardial infarction is the most important cause of chronic heart failure. According to reports, more than 70% of patients with chronic heart failure suffer from myocardial infarction. Nano sodium alginate-bioglass has attracted more and more attention in the treatment of myocardial infarction due to its good cell proliferation. In order to understand the effect of nano-sodium alginate-bioglass on myocardial infarction, we added nano-sodium alginate-bioglass in the treatment process. The calcium ions released by the bio-glass during the slurry preparation process partially cross-link the sodium alginate, which helps to restore the heart function of myocardial infarction. Add nano-seaweed Sodium-bioglass can significantly promote the proliferation of heart cells. Through the test of different groups and the results of cell experiments, we have obtained the best recovery effect of myocardial infarction when the bioglass content is about 30%, and the changes in the vitality of heart cells can be seen most clearly.

ABSTRACT

To reveal the cultural effect in the job demands-resources model, this study examined how Confucian familism, emotional labor, and work-family conflict (WFC) explain the variance in teachers' emotional exhaustion, with a focus on the mediating roles of emotional labor and WFC. With a sample of 3,312 teachers in China, the results of this study revealed that surface acting and expression of naturally felt emotion (ENFE) and WFC mediated the relationship between familism and emotional exhaustion. Moreover, familism positively predicted deep acting, ENFE, WFC, and emotional exhaustion, while negatively predicted surface acting. These findings suggest that Confucian familism may play the dual role of motivator and stressor for Chinese teachers' emotional labor and well-being. This study contributes to the job demands-resources theory by revealing the important role of cultural traditions and provides valuable information for interventions to sustain teacher well-being.

ABSTRACT

Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury caused by acute myocardial infarction (AMI) can initiate a strong inflammatory response. Polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) are the most important inflammatory cells. Our previous studies found that the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) regulates the proinflammatory effects of PMNs. However, the role and mechanism of CaSR-regulated PMNs in I/R injury remain uncertain. A rat AMI model was developed in this study and showed that the expression of CaSR on PMNs increased in AMI; however, the levels of Bcl-xl and SOD in myocardial tissue decreased, while Bax and MDA levels increased. Then, after coculture with CaSR-stimulated PMNs, the expression of Bcl-xl in cardiomyocytes significantly increased, Bax expression and the apoptotic rate decreased, and ROS production was significantly inhibited. At the same time, the cardiomyocyte damage caused by hypoxia-reoxygenation was reduced. Furthermore, we found that exosomes derived from PMNs could be taken up by cardiomyocytes. Additionally, the exosomes secreted by CaSR-stimulated PMNs had the same effect on cardiomyocytes as CaSR-stimulated PMNs, while the increased phosphorylation level of AKT in cardiomyocytes could be revered by AKT transduction pathway inhibitors. Subsequently, we identified the exosomes derived from CaSR-stimulated PMNs by second-generation sequencing technology, and increased expression of lncRNA ENSRNOT00000039868 was noted. The data show that this lncRNA can prevent the hypoxia-reoxygenation injury by upregulating the expression of PDGFD in cardiomyocytes. In vivo, exosomes from CaSR-stimulated PMNs played a significant role against AMI and reperfusion injury in myocardial tissue. Thus, we propose that exosomes derived from CaSR-stimulated PMNs can reduce I/R injury in AMI, and this effect may be related to the AKT signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

We previously developed propranolol-encapsulated liposomes-in-microspheres (PLIM) to realize the sustained propranolol release for the treatment of hemangiomas. However, the liposomes released from the microspheres still lacked specificity for CD133-positive hemangioma-derived stem cells (HemSCs) which are considered to be the seeds of hemangiomas. Therefore, we hereby encapsulated propranolol-loaded CD133 aptamers conjugated liposomes in poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) microspheres to develop propranolol-loaded CD133 aptamers conjugated liposomes-in-microspheres (PCLIM), to realize the aim of the sustained and targeted therapy of hemangiomas. The evaluation of the release of propranolol from PCLIM was carried out, and the cytotoxic effect and angiogenic growth factor expression inhibitory ability of PCLIM were performed in HemSCs. The in vivo hemangioma inhibitory ability of PCLIM was also investigated in nude mice with subcutaneous human hemangiomas. PCLIM possessed a desired size of 29.2 µm, drug encapsulation efficiency (25.3%), and a prolonged drug release for 40 days. Importantly, PCLIM could inhibit HemSCs proliferation and the protein expression of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF) in HemSCs to a greater extent compared with PLIM. In nude mice bearing hemangioma xenograft, PCLIM showed the best therapeutic efficacy towards hemangiomas, as reflected by remarkably decreased hemangioma volume, weight and microvessel density (MVD). Thus, our results demonstrated that PCLIM realized the sustained and targeted treatment of hemangiomas, resulting in remarkable inhibition of hemangiomas.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the manner of urea-modulated UT-B urea transporter (UT) internalization in infantile hemangioma-derived vascular endothelial cells (HemECs). The immunohistochemistry assay was performed to identify infancy hemangioma-derived endothelial cell line (XPTS-1) cells. Cell toxicity was detected with the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis were measured to analyze the expression of UT-B. UT-B internalization was observed by confocal microscopy. The clathrin inhibitor chlorpromazine (CPZ) and caveolin endocytic disrupter methyl-ß-cyclodextrin (MßCD) were used in XPTS-1 cells transfected with UT-B-GFP to repress endocytosis. Urea-promoted UT-B expression in a concentration-dependent manner in an infantile XPTS-1 cell line. CPZ and MßCD significantly inhibited UT-B protein internalization. The pretreatment of UT-B-GFP cells with adaptor protein2 (AP2)-µ2-siRNA and caveolin-siRNA significantly inhibited UT-B protein internalization. Our findings suggested that urea-mediated UT-B UT internalization is clathrin and caveolae dependent in infantile HemECs.

ABSTRACT

Most empirical evidence supports the view that non-symbolic and symbolic representations are foundations for advanced mathematical ability. However, the detailed development trajectories of these two types of representations in childhood are not very clear, nor are the different effects of non-symbolic and symbolic representations on the development of mathematical ability. We assessed 253 4- to 8-year-old children's non-symbolic and symbolic numerical representations, mapping skills, and mathematical ability, aiming to investigate the developmental trajectories and associations between these skills. Our results showed non-symbolic numerical representation emerged earlier than the symbolic one. Four-year-olds were capable of non-symbolic comparisons but not symbolic comparisons; five-year-olds performed better at non-symbolic comparisons than symbolic comparisons. This performance difference disappeared at age 6. Children at age 6 or older were able to map between symbolic and non-symbolic quantities. However, as children learn more about the symbolic representation system, their advantage in non-symbolic representation disappeared. Path analyses revealed that a direct effect of children's symbolic numerical skills on their math performance, and an indirect effect of non-symbolic numerical skills on math performance via symbolic skills. These results suggest that symbolic numerical skills are a predominant factor affecting math performance in early childhood. However, the influences of symbolic and non-symbolic numerical skills on mathematical performance both declines with age.

We investigated the Spatial Numerical Association of Response Codes (SNARC) effect in 240 adults using a parity judgment and a magnitude classification task. Eight numbers from 1 to 9 except 5 were randomly presented one at a time, half of the participants were asked to compare these number with the target number 5 in the magnitude classification task; the other half of the participants were asked to judge whether these numbers were even or odd. It was called a phase when all eight numbers were tested; there were in total 16 phases. Detailed analyses of the changes in response times across the range of numbers and the chronological trend of the SNARC effect size over 16 phases estimated by a curvilinear regression model were reported. This phase-to-phase design and analyses provide an insight into the process of the SNARC effect in different tasks. We found that the SNARC effect emerged earlier and stayed more stable in magnitude classification task than in the parity task during the time course. Furthermore, the size of SNARC effect increased with time in the magnitude classification task, whereas it fluctuated up and down over time in the parity task. These findings indicate that the association of the number and space is dynamic and the process of the SNARC effect varies across tasks.

ABSTRACT

Infantile hemangioma (IH) is a benign pediatric tumor, and rapid growth of IH can result in serious morbidity and even mortality. Only one drug Hemangeol™ (propranolol hydrochloride oral solution) has been approved for the treatment of IH, whereas patients suffer from its adverse effects and high frequency of administration. We have used urea, an organic compound and a normal body metabolite, in the treatment of IH for 20 years, and demonstrated that urea is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for IH. To reduce the daily administration of urea, we firstly utilized urea-loaded liposomes-in-microspheres (ULIM) as a novel topical controlled release system to realize the sustained release of urea. ULIM were fabricated from the encapsulation of urea-loaded liposomes in poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres. The characteristics, activity and mechanism against IH of ULIM were examined in vitro and in vivo. ULIM were of a desired particle size (~62.4 µm), drug encapsulation efficiency (~51.5%) and sustained drug release for 40 days. ULIM inhibited the proliferation of hemangioma endothelia cells (HemECs) and expression of vascular endothelial growth factor-A in HemECs. The therapeutic effect of ULIM in IH was better than propranolol, urea, urea-loaded liposomes and urea-loaded microspheres in vivo, as reflected by markedly decreased hemangioma weight, volume and microvessel density. None of the treated mice showed behavioral changes, severe side­effects and weight loss. Our results suggest that use of ULIM is a potential and safe approach with which to locally and efficiently deliver urea to hemangioma, and is a promising alternative to propranolol in the treatment of IH.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To reduce the adverse effects and high frequency of administration of propranolol to treat infantile hemangioma, we first utilized propranolol-loaded liposomes-in-microsphere (PLIM) as a novel topical release system to realize sustained release of propranolol. METHODS: PLIM was developed from encapsulating propranolol-loaded liposomes (PLs) in microspheres made of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) copolymers (PLGA-PEG-PLGA). The release profile of propranolol from PLIM was evaluated, and its biological activity was investigated in vitro using proliferation assays on hemangioma stem cells (HemSCs). Tumor inhibition was studied in nude mice bearing human subcutaneous infantile hemangioma. RESULTS: The microspheres were of desired particle size (~77.8 µm) and drug encapsulation efficiency (~23.9%) and achieved sustained drug release for 40 days. PLIM exerted efficient inhibition of the proliferation of HemSCs and significantly reduced the expression of two angiogenesis factors (vascular endothelial growth factor-A [VEGF-A] and basic fibroblast growth factor [bFGF]) in HemSCs. Notably, the therapeutic effect of PLIM in hemangioma was superior to that of propranolol and PL in vivo, as reflected by significantly reduced hemangioma volume, weight, and microvessel density. The mean hemangioma weight of the PLIM-treated group was significantly lower than that of other groups (saline =0.28 g, propranolol =0.21 g, PL =0.13 g, PLIM =0.03 g; PLIM vs saline: P<0.001, PLIM vs propranolol: P<0.001, PLIM vs PL: P<0.001). The mean microvessel density of the PLIM-treated group was significantly lower than that of other groups (saline =40 vessels/mm2, propranolol =31 vessels/mm2, PL =25 vessels/mm2, PLIM =11 vessels/mm2; PLIM vs saline: P<0.001, PLIM vs propranolol: P<0.01, PLIM vs PL: P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Our findings show that PLIM is a very promising approach to locally and efficiently deliver propranolol to the hemangioma site leading to a significant inhibition of infantile hemangioma.

AIM: To develop propranolol-loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticle with CD133 aptamers (PPN-CD133) to treat infantile hemangioma. MATERIALS & METHODS: The antihemangioma activity and mechanism of PPN-CD133 were evaluated. RESULTS & CONCLUSION: PPN-CD133 are of desired size (143.7 nm), drug encapsulation efficiency (51.8%) and sustained drug release for 8 days. PPN-CD133 could effectively bind to CD133+ hemangioma stem cells, resulting in enhanced cytotoxic effect and reduced expression of angiogenesis factors in hemangioma stem cells. The therapeutic effect of PPN-CD133 in hemangioma was superior to that of untargeted PPN and propranolol in vivo, as reflected by reduced hemangioma volume, weight and microvessel density. PPN-CD133 represents a very promising approach to locally and efficiently deliver propranolol leading to significant inhibition of infantile hemangioma.

The study aimed to examine the developmental trajectories of non-symbolic and symbolic addition capacities in children and the mapping ability between these two. We assessed 106 4- to 7-year-old children and found that 4-year-olds were able to do non-symbolic addition but not symbolic addition. Five-year-olds and older were able to do symbolic addition and their performance in symbolic addition exceeded non-symbolic addition in grade 1 (approximate age 7). These results suggested non-symbolic addition ability emerges earlier and is less affected by formal mathematical education than symbolic addition. Meanwhile, we tested children's bi-directional mapping ability using a novel task and found that children were able to map between symbolic and non-symbolic representations of number at age 5. Their ability in mapping non-symbolic to symbolic number became more proficient in grade 1 (approximate age 7). This suggests children at age 7 have developed a relatively mature symbolic representation system.

There has recently been an increasing focus on the development of automatic processing of numerical magnitude. However, little effort has been made to explore automatic access to non-symbolic numerical magnitude in preschool children. In experiment 1, we used a non-symbolic physical size comparison task in 3- to 6-year-olds to examine developmental changes and the effect of ratio and counting principle knowledge. Results showed that the existence of automatic non-symbolic numerical processing began at age 3-4 years and size congruity effects tended to reduce with increasing age from 4 years old. The study also found that non-counting-principle knowers had a larger congruity effect, and in low ratio conditions the size congruity effect was more easily found. In addition, symbolic number comparison ability was negatively related to size congruity effect. In experiment 2, we explored the relationship between inhibition skill and size congruity effects, as well as interference and facilitatory components in children aged 4 years old. Results showed no correlation between inhibition skills and the size congruity effect and only interference effects were found. We also found a larger interference effect in low ratio conditions than in high ratio conditions.

ABSTRACT

Infantile hemangiomas are the most common tumors affecting children. Although infantile hemangiomas are benign, they could result in morbidity and mortality. The only US Food and Drug Administration-approved drug for infantile hemangiomas is propranolol hydrochloride (Hemangeol™); however, its adverse effects and high frequency of administration hamper its clinical application. Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) is crucial to the angiogenesis of infantile hemangiomas, and thus it is considered a valuable therapeutic target for infantile hemangiomas. To reduce the adverse effects and high administration frequency of propranolol, we developed propranolol-loaded nanoparticles conjugated with anti-VEGFR antibody (PNP-VEGFR) as a controlled- and targeted-release system to treat infantile hemangiomas. The characteristics, anti-hemangioma activity, and mechanisms of PNP-VEGFR were examined in vitro and in vivo. The developed PNP-VEGFR exhibited a small size (∼100 nm), drug encapsulation efficiency (∼60%), and sustained drug release for 8 days. PNP-VEGFR was efficiently bound to human umbilical vein endothelial cells and human hemangioma endothelial cells in a VEGFR-dependent manner, resulting in enhanced cytotoxic effects and stronger inhibition of VEGF expression, compared to that of the untargeted propranolol-loaded nanoparticles (PNP) and propranolol. Notably, the in vivo therapeutic effects of PNP-VEGFR in infantile hemangiomas were superior to that of propranolol and PNP, as reflected by significantly reduced hemangioma volume, weight, and microvessel density, without any noticeable behavioral changes or weight loss. PNP-VEGFR was shown to provide targeted delivery and sustained release of propranolol to infantile hemangiomas. Therefore, it represents a promising treatment for infantile hemangiomas.

ABSTRACT

We investigated the effect of working memory load on the SNARC (spatial-numerical association of response codes) effect under different number judgment tasks (parity judgment and magnitude comparison), using a novel dual task. Instead of exerting load over the whole block of number judgment trials, in this dual task, number judgment trials were inserted into each interstimulus interval of an n-back task, which served as the working memory load. We varied both load type (verbal and spatial) and amount (1-load, 2-load, and 3-load). The results indicated that the SNARC effect disappeared even under the 1-load condition for a parity judgment, regardless of the type of load. However, during the magnitude comparison task, the SNARC effect increased with increasing load amounts under spatial load conditions; under verbal load conditions, the SNARC effect decreased with increasing amounts of load, and disappeared during the 3-load task. The difference between the parity and magnitude tasks was not attributable to the interval stimuli or task switching. These findings confirm that different spatial-numerical associations for comparing numerical magnitudes and judgments of parity have different needs with respect to working memory resources.

ABSTRACT

Mathematics is one of the most objective, logical, and practical academic disciplines. Yet, in addition to cognitive skills, mathematical problem solving also involves affective factors. In the current study, we first investigated effects of mathematics anxiety (MA) and mathematical metacognition on word problem solving (WPS). We tested 224 children (116 boys, M = 10.15 years old, SD = 0.56) with the Mathematics Anxiety Scale for Children, the Chinese Revised-edition Questionnaire of Pupil's Metacognitive Ability in Mathematics, and WPS tasks. The results indicated that mathematical metacognition mediated the effect of MA on WPS after controlling for IQ. Second, we divided the children into four mathematics achievement groups including high achieving (HA), typical achieving (TA), low achieving (LA), and mathematical learning difficulty (MLD). Because mathematical metacognition and MA predicted mathematics achievement, we compared group differences in metacognition and MA with IQ partialled out. The results showed that children with MLD scored lower in self-image and higher in learning mathematics anxiety (LMA) than the TA and HA children, but not in mathematical evaluation anxiety (MEA). MLD children's LMA was also higher than that of their LA counterparts. These results provide insight into factors that may mediate poor WPS performance which emerges under pressure in mathematics. These results also suggest that the anxiety during learning mathematics should be taken into account in mathematical learning difficulty interventions.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore the therapeutic effect of radiofrequency ablation for tongue venous malformation( VM).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>From July 2013 to July 2014, 30 cases with tongue VM (local or diffuse) were retrospectively analyzed. 23 cases underwent radiofrequency ablation treatment. The radiofrequency electrode tip(0. 5 mm in diameter) was inserted into the lesion 1 mm below the bottom with 25 W in power and 15-30 s of pulse. The treatment was repeated when the electrode tip was removed back every 1 mm. Multi-point treatment was performed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>15 cases with unilateral VM were completely healed after one-stage radiofrequency ablation. 8 cases with bilateral VM received two-stage radiofrequency ablation with a 3-6 months of interval. Among the 8 cases, completely healing was achieved in 5 cases, partial VM residue happened in 3 cases due to its diffuse lesion and reservation of tongue function. 23 cases were followed up for 3 month to 1.5 years. Good cosmetic and functional results was achieved in 20 cases with no relapse. Partial VM residue was left in 3 cases.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Radiofrequency ablation can effectively treat tongue VM with minimal morbidity and good cosmetic appearance. It also avoids the disadvantages of surgery.</p>

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the treatment of the scrotal vein malformation in teenagers and clinical efficacy. METHODS: 32 cases with the local and diffuse scrotal vein malformation were retrospectively analyzed. 31 cases underwent local injection with 40% urea before resection. The urea was injected locally into tumor through multi-points within 30 seconds, 2-6 ml every time, one time a day. The injection was performed for 5-12 days. The treatment was refused in one case. The therapeutic effect and cosmetic result were recorded. RESULTS: The tumors were removed radically in 28 cases including one operation in 25 cases and secondary operation in 3 cases. The patients were followed up for 1-3 years with no recurrence. Cosmetic result with bilaterally symmetric scrotum was satisfactory. The tumors in 3 severe cases were partially resected with improvement. CONCLUSIONS: Combined treatment with urea injection and surgical procedure can effectively treat the scrotal vein malformation with satisfactory result.
