ABSTRACT

Authors evaluated functional outcomes after three different surgical procedures for sarcoma around the knee joint. Sixteen patients with sarcoma were given four to six preoperative courses of chemotherapy. Patients were separated into three groups according to the pattern of tumour excision. The first group underwent the resection of proximal fibula and tibialis anterior muscle resection, the second group underwent resection of distal femur or proximal tibia with total knee replacement, and the third group underwent radical amputation. The mean functional evaluations were 100, 95 and 80%. All marginal resections of proximal fibula resulted in excellent function. No local evidence of tumour recurrence was seen at mean follow-up of 24 months (Tab. 1, Fig. 2, Ref. 7).

ABSTRACT

Alpha-methyl-homocysteine thiolactone (AMHCTL) was shown to increase survival of irradiated bacteria. Based upon these observations we administered 100 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally female BALB/c mice prior to whole body irradiation from a Co-source at a dose of 6 Gy. Unirradiated mice as well as irradiated and L-cysteine and saline pretreated mice served as controls. Light microscopical, scanning electron microscopical and transmission electron microscopical examinations showed a radioprotective effect: Tracheal epithelium including ciliae were preserved in the experimental group, studies on the lung revealed radiationprotection as no transudation or exsudation and no proliferation of capillaries was detected.

ABSTRACT

The paper deals with methods and equipment for measuring pulmonary ventilation parameters in children of the lowest age category. Description and substantiation of the given method of the measurement itself on the Pneumotachograph SAV. Evaluation of the obtained results in the records and of the time courses of volume and air flow rate on a single-pen recorder is presented further the relations necessary for quantitative description of analogue signal processing from the pneumotachograph are given as well as the series of parameters obtained on examining 21 infants and their clinical evaluation. (Tab.1,Fig.2,Ref.7.).

ABSTRACT

During 1987-1989 the authors examined 57 patients; reflux disease was detected in 33 (i.e. 57.89%). In the group of patients where the indication for examination was based on symptomatology typical for respiratory diseases, they found a higher rate of positive findings--62%. The authors draw attention to some methodological problems of 24-hour pH-metry. They explain the advantages of the mentioned examination method in relation to the subsequent therapy.
