ABSTRACT

Metal-free graphitic carbon nitrides are on the rise as polymer photocatalysts under visible light illumination, taking shares in a range of promising photocatalytic reactions, including water splitting. Their simple synthesis and facile structural modification afford them exceptional tunability, enabling the creation of photocatalysts with distinct properties. While their metal-free nature marks a significant step towards environmental sustainability, the high energy consumption required to produce carbon nitride photocatalysts remains a substantial barrier to their widespread adoption. Furthermore, the process of condensation at approximately 550°C typically results in solid yields of less than 15%, significantly challenging their economic viability. Here, we report on lowering manufacturing conditions of carbon nitride photocatalysts whilst enhancing photocatalytic activity by introducing binaphthyl diamine as a structural mediator. At 450°C in 2 hours, carbon nitride photocatalyst shows a lower bandgap and enables visible light induced hydrogen evolution (194 µmol h-1) comparable to benchmark carbon nitride photocatalysts.

ABSTRACT

Emerging contaminants and their pervasive presence in freshwater ecosystems have been widely documented, but less is known about their prevalence and the harm they cause in marine ecosystems, particularly in developing countries. This study provides data on the prevalence and risk posed by microplastics, plasticisers, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) along the Maharashtra coast of India. The sediment and coastal water samples were collected from 17 sampling stations, processed, and subjected to FTIR-ATR, ICP-MS, SEM-EDX, LC-MS/MS, and GC-MS for further analysis. Higher MPs abundance, combined with the pollution load index, indicates that the northern zone is a high-impact zone with pollution concerns. Plasticisers in extracted MPs and HMs adsorption on MPs surface from surrounding waters reveal their roles as a source and vector for contaminants, respectively. The mean concentration of metoprolol (53.7-306 ng L-1), tramadol (16.6-198 ng L-1), venlafaxine (24.6-234 ng L-1), and triclosan (211-433 ng L-1) in Maharashtra's coastal waters were several folds higher than in other water systems, raising major health concerns. The hazard quotient (HQ) scores revealed that >70 % of study sites pose a high to medium (1 > HQ > 0.1) ecological risk to fish, crustaceans and algae, indicating serious concern. Fish and crustaceans (35.3 % each) show a higher level of risk than algae (29.5 %). Metoprolol and venlafaxine could represent greater ecological risks than tramadol. Similarly, HQ suggests that bisphenol A has larger ecological risks than bisphenol S along the Maharashtra coast. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first in-depth investigation into emerging pollutants in Indian coastal regions. This information is crucial for better policy formulation and coastal management in India in general, and Maharashtra in particular.

ABSTRACT

A mathematical description of the thermal degradation of spongin-based scaffolds is given. The Arrhenius integral was evaluated using the inverse problem approach, in which the unknown values were the activation energy EA, the pre-exponential factor A, and the model function f(α) characterizing the physical process. The form of f(α) was determined and the values of the parameters EA, A and TS were evaluated in detail. Moreover, the function f(α) assessed in this study was compared with classical solid-state model functions. Finally, the mean square minimization approach was used to solve the inverse problem with unknown function f(α) and pre-exponential constant A. Likewise, the approximation of f(α) with 6th- and 7th-degree polynomials was used to obtain numerical values of EA and A. This study evaluated the inverse problem approach for the Arrhenius equation. These investigations provide new insight into the description of the thermal degradation of spongin-based scaffolds.

ABSTRACT

The main goal of the study was the hydrothermal-assisted synthesis of TiO2-ZnO systems and their subsequent use in photoactive processes. Additionally, an important objective was to propose a method for synthesizing TiO2-ZnO systems enabling the control of crystallinity and morphology through epitaxial growth of ZnO nanowires. Based on the results of X-ray diffraction analysis, in the case of materials containing a small addition of ZnO (≥5 wt.%), no crystalline phase of wurtzite was observed, proving that a high amount of modified titanium dioxide can inhibit the crystallization of ZnO. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results confirmed the formation of ZnO nanowires for systems containing ≥ 5% ZnO. Moreover, for the synthesized systems, there were no significant changes in the band gap energy. One of the primary purposes of this study was to test the TiO2-ZnO system in the photodegradation process of 4-chlorophenol using low-power UV-LED lamps. The results of photo-oxidation studies showed that the obtained binary systems exhibit good photodegradation and mineralization efficiency. Additionally, it was also pointed out that the dye-sensitized solar cells can be a second application for the synthesized TiO2-ZnO binary systems.

ABSTRACT

Three different 3D fibrous-like NiO/Ni(OH)2/Ni­carbonized spongin-based materials were prepared via a simple sorption-reduction method. Depending on the support used, the catalysts were composed of carbon, nickel oxide, nickel hydroxide and zero-valent nickel, with the surface content of the nickel-containing phase in the range 15.2-26.0 wt%. Catalytic studies showed promising activity in the oxidation of phenolic compounds in water and in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. The oxidation efficiency depends on the substrate used and ranges from 80% for phenol at pH 2 to 99% for 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (4-CPA) and methylchlorophenoxypropionic acid (MCPP). In the reduction reaction, all catalysts exhibited superior activity, with rate constants in the range 0.648-1.022 min-1. The work also includes a detailed investigation of reusability and kinetic studies.
