ABSTRACT

Background: Restrictions imposed by national governments during SARS-CoV-2-pandemic have impacted the mental health of children around the world. Studies have already proven the importance of secure attachment acting as a protective factor in child development. Therefore, children with secure attachment have a higher chance of developing and using appropriate coping mechanisms. Objective: The goal of this study was to explore the possible connection between the pandemic, as well as child attachment, and young children's emotional health. The general hypothesis assumes a lower rate of emotional problems among children with secure attachment and a higher rate of emotional problems among children with insecure-disorganized attachment, as well as an increase of these problems during the pandemic. Method: The analysis included N = 129 mothers (M = 39.98 years) and their children (M = 5.19 years). Via an online survey, which was held at different time points during the pandemic, information on the children's emotional problems was retrieved. The survey used the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Data regarding the quality of attachment was collected via the Strange Situations Test (SST). At this point the participating children were approximately 12 months old. Results: The calculation of a mixed ANCOVA showed, that attachment quality had a significant influence on children's emotional problems [F(2, 121) = 4.01, p = .021]. The interaction effect between time and child attachment reached significance [F(3.45, 208.42) = 3.58, p = .011]. The calculation of an additional mixed ANCOVA showed, that the reported emotional problems of girls were higher than those of boys F(1, 118) = 4.56, p = .035). Conclusions: Our study shows that there is an association between attachment security and emotional problems and the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the mental health of preschool children in Germany. The emotional problems of all children increased, especially the disorganized attached children had been reported as emotionally stressed in the first lockdown. The results indicate the need for preventive services (for children and parents) to promote and maintain stress coping skills in order to maintain children's mental health in times of crisis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Early adversity and negative experiences in the adoptive family can put adopted children at risk for emotional and behavior problems. OBJECTIVE: This study analyzes the influence of children's preadoptive history and adoptive parents' characteristics on the psychosocial adjustment of nationally and internationally adopted children in Germany. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The survey included 172 adopted children aged between 24 and 145 months and their adoptive parents. METHODS: Parents provided information about preadoptive history. Information about emotional and behavior problems was obtained from the parental version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Parental well-being was obtained through a composite score of three standardized measures (self-efficacy questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale PSS-4, Brief Symptom Inventory BSI); parenting behavior was assessed with the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (DEAPQ). RESULTS: 12.5% of the adopted children scored in the clinical range of the SDQ. In a multiple regression analysis, the experience of maltreatment and neglect was the most important predictor of emotional and behavior problems at time of assessment, followed by pre- and perinatal risk and parental stress regulation difficulties, R² = .423, F(4, 128) = 28.539. Increases in the number of risk factors present were associated with a greater odd of children scoring in the clinical range of the SDQ. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the nationally and internationally adopted children in this sample were well-adjusted. Prenatal and preadoptive risk as well as stress regulation capacities of the main caregiver contributed to the child's development. An accumulation of risks increased the likelihood of adjustment problems in adopted children.

ABSTRACT

Executive functions (EFs) - a set of cognitive control abilities - mediate resilience to stress and are associated with academic achievement and health throughout life. They are crucially linked to prefrontal cortex function as well as to other cortical and subcortical brain functions, which are maturing throughout childhood at different rates. Recent behavioral research suggested that children's EFs were related to parenting quality and child attachment security, but the neural correlates of these associations are unknown. With this study we tested in 4- to 6-year-old healthy children (N = 27) how emotional availability (EA) of the mother-child-interaction was associated with behavioral and electrophysiological correlates of response inhibition (a core EF) in a Go/Nogo task, using event-related potential recordings (ERPs), and with behavioral performance in a Delay of Gratification (DoG) and a Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task (HTKS). Our data showed that the Go/Nogo task modulated children's ERP components resembling adult electrophysiological indices of response inhibition - the N2 and P3/LPC ERPs-, but the children's N2 and P3/LPC ERPs showed longer latencies. Higher maternal autonomy-fostering behavior and greater child responsiveness were significantly associated with smaller children's N2 Go/Nogo effects at fronto-central and parietal sites and with greater Go/Nogo effects in the N2 time window at occipital sites, over and above children's age and intelligence. Additionally, greater maternal sensitivity and a higher dyadic EA quality of the mother-child-interaction went along with greater occipital Go/Nogo effects in the N2 time window, but this effect clearly diminished when we controlled for children's age and intelligence. Higher maternal autonomy-support was also positively associated with better HTKS performance, and higher dyadic EA quality went along with higher HTKS and DoG scores. However, no significant associations were found between EA variables and the behavioral response inhibition measures of the Go/Nogo task. Our results suggest that parenting qualities modulate the functionality of neural circuits involved in response inhibition, an important component of EFs. This finding, thus, indicates that parent-child interactions shape the neurocognitive development underlying EFs.

ABSTRACT

Early intervention programs aiming at developing parents' relationship and parenting skills and supporting young families have become increasingly established in Germany throughout the last decade. The present longitudinal study analyzed 53 children and their mothers receiving early intervention due to their psychosocially highly challenging life situations and personal circumstances. The children were examined at birth and at an age of twelve months as well as between ages two and four. The results revealed that the child's cognitive development could be predicted by both maternal sensitivity and mother's psychosocial stress. However, the amount, type, and intensity of early intervention did not have any effect on the child's development. In terms of the effectiveness of early interventions the results implicate that interventions seems to be offered in an unspecific manner and does not contribute to an improvement of the child's developmental status.
