ABSTRACT

Physiotherapy in oncology is a process closely related to cancer treatment methods. Rehabilitation is based on physical activity in various forms involving the musculoskeletal system but also affects the emotional state. Physical activity influences physical and psychological well-being of people undergoing oncological treatment, in the course of which the most common psychiatric disorders are depression, substance use disorder, sleep disorders, fatigue syndrome, resulting in worsening of the quality of life. Difficulties in implementing physical exercise in cancer patients pose a challenge to treatment teams.

ABSTRACT

The COL1A1 and COL5A1 variants have been associated with the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Therefore, the main aim of the study was to investigate the association between three polymorphisms within two genes (rs1800012 in COL1A1, as well as rs12722 and rs13946 in COL5A1) and the reported, yet rarely described in the literature, injuries of the joint and muscle area in a physically active Caucasian population. Polish students (n = 114) were recruited and divided into the following two groups: students with (n = 53) and without (n = 61) injures. Genotyping was carried out using real-time PCR. The results obtained revealed a statistically significant association between rs1800012 COL1A1 and injury under an overdominant model. Specifically, when adjusted for age and sex, the GT heterozygotes had a 2.2 times higher chance of being injured compared with both homozygotes (TT and GG, 95% CI 0.59-5.07, p = 0.040). However, no significant interaction between the COL5A1 variants, either individually or in haplotype combination, and susceptibility to injury were found. In addition, the gene-gene interaction analysis did not reveal important relationships with the musculoskeletal injury status. It was demonstrated that rs1800012 COL1A1 may be positively associated with physical activity-related injuries in a Caucasian population. Harboring the specific GT genotype may be linked to a higher risk of being injured.

ABSTRACT

In the opinion of many researches systematic physical exercises and balance training can lead to decrease presbystasis symptoms. Involutional changes such as: decrease sense of touch and proprioception, reduced visual acuity, reduced range of motion and faulty posture all have impact on motor ef􀏐iciency and risk of falls. Based on data from the medical literature methods of rehabilitation which improve balance in older people with presbyastasis were described.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of the inhabitants of the West Pomeranian region in terms of physiotherapy, and to highlight the need for action to expand public awareness of this topic. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A questionnaire survey involved a group of 267 adult men and women aged 18 to 78 years. All subjects were residents of West Pomerania. The questionnaire consists of 15 open and closed questions. Respondents provided answers to questions about physiotherapist competence, learning opportunities, and the availability of physiotherapy services. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge about physiotherapy is insufficient. There is a great need to disseminate information about the profession of the physiotherapist. It is necessary to undertake further studies on a larger group of participants.

ABSTRACT

Progress in existing methods of physiotherapy and body regeneration and introduction of new methods has made it possible to precisely select the techniques according to patient needs. The modern therapist is capable of improving the physical and mental condition of the patient. Watsu helps the therapist eliminate symptoms from the locomotor system and reach the psychic sphere at the same time.

ABSTRACT

It is obvious that sports have beneficial effects on health, but they often pose a certain risk to health. Recent studies point to the growing number of injuries and accidents among players practicing football. Players are injured during a match (65.68%) more often than during training (34.31%). The most common injuries include damage to the lower extremities (97%) including: bruising (56.70%), muscle and ligament injuries (17%), tearing muscles and ligaments (13.40%) and fractures (13%). A forced break in training activity contributes to the weakening of the player's performance, which is why one of the main goals of rehabilitation is to restore it as soon as possible. This paper is devoted to the characteristics of injuries among players practicing football. The survey comprised 102 athletes of both sexes, practicing in Polish football clubs, at various levels of competition, e.g. junior team of players aged under 17 years representing Poland.

ABSTRACT

It has been more than 30 years since adipose tissue (AT) has been recognized as a central modulator orchestrating sophisticated process termed "immunometabolism". Nonetheless, despite its unique involvement in the regulation of immune and endocrine homeostasis, recent studies demonstrated that AT also contains significant number of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) that may be there "settling down" throughout life. In this article we will focus on presenting the current concepts regarding endocrine, immunological, and molecular mechanisms that may contribute to and regulate bone marrow (BM)-derived HSPCs homing into AT environment, as well as, highlight various structural and morphological similarities between BM and AT that might be involved in creating appropriate tissue niches for BM-derived HSPCs in AT. Finally, we will discuss how development of obesity or type 2 diabetes may influence balance of homing signals for HSPCs in AT environment.

ABSTRACT

During recent years, voice disorders continued to hold the first position on the list of occupational diseases in Poland. Teachers constitute the largest group of persons whose profession is associated with a strong vocal effort. In 2003, 1100 new cases of voice disorders were diagnosed (approx. 25% of all occupational diseases), reflecting the poor health status of persons with a voice-dependent profession (Data of the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Lódz). Due to specific conditions of work in the education sector, voice emission deteriorates after several or more years as teacher. The situation differs in singers, who rarely suffer from voice disorders thanks to special properties of their voice organ, as well as to many years of training and perfecting of voice emission techniques.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Neuromuscular diseases progress to pathologic conditions which reveal structural or functional lesions of the elements forming the motor unit of the body. Typical clinical symptoms include muscle weakness, muscle flaccidity, pareses, and partial or total loss of reflexes. Excessive intensity of these symptoms leads i.a. to motor dysfunctions and ultimately to problems with physical development of children and youth. Treatment of such conditions is based on physiotherapy. The aim of this article is to expose the growing problem of dysphagia in patients with neuromuscular diseases and to systematize therapeutic activities during the process of rehabilitation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present the case of a 25-year-old male with SMA Ib diagnosed at birth, with full-blown symptoms of mechanical and oropharyngeal dysphagia. The patient complained of jaw rigidity, reduced oral aperture, difficulties in moving food in the oral cavity, loss of masticatory force, weakness and quickly progressing fatigue of jaw muscles during chewing, and problems with swallowing. Prior to the physiotherapeutic test, we performed a qualitative and quantitative assessment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) mobility. Quantitative assessment of movement range was done in accordance with principles for functional examination of the masticatory organ in dentistry with the use of a millimeter ruler. We also recorded the subjective assessment by the patient of eating and swallowing. Assessment was done at the start and end of therapy (after 8 weeks). The patient underwent an 8-week course of therapy which consisted of stretching of cervical muscles according to Anderson, massage of soft tissues in the TMJ region, acupressure of the attachment of the masseter muscle (on the zygomatic bone), postisometric relaxation ofmasseter muscles (in the direction of abduction), active TMJ movements, active tongue exercises, and swallowing maneuvers. Rehabilitation was performed according to the sequence above during 20-minute sessions three times per week. RESULTS: We observed objective and subjective improvement after our physiotherapy of the patient. TMJ mobility increased and the patient reported subjective improvement in the quality of life manifested with greater comfort during eating, moving, chewing, and swallowing food. CONCLUSIONS: Therapy ofdysphagia in SMA Ib patients should be included as early as possible in the rehabilitation program in anticipation of problems with food ingestion. Therapy of dysphagia should be comprehensive, i.e. should not be limited to exercises stimulating TMJ mobility but should also address tongue movements and therapy of soft tissues. Therapy needs to be continuous and systematic regardless of the severity of dysphagia. It is particularly important to start dysphagia prevention measures in children with neuromuscular disorders by including exercises of the masticatory organ in the rehabilitation program.
