ABSTRACT

Malnutrition may be a consequence of energy deficit or micronutrient deficiency. It is considered the most relevant risk factor for illness and death, particularly in developing countries. In this review we described the magnitude of this problem, as well as its direct effect on the immune system and how it results in higher susceptibility to infections. A special emphasis was given to experimental models used to investigate the relationship between undernutrition and immunity. Malnutrition is obviously a challenge that must be addressed to health authorities and the scientific community.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Osteolytic lesions rarely occur in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We reported an atypical form of the disease, with marrow fibrosis and osteolytic lesions, in a 17-year-old patient, whose main symptom was lumbar pain. Diagnosis of AML was established by bone marrow and lymph node histological analysis. Computed tomography (CT) scan and 99mTc-MDP bone scintyscan revealed osteolytic lesions. After remission-induction, bone marrow aspirate and biopsy showed no evidence of leukemic infiltration, nevertheless bone abnormalities persisted on 99mTc-MDP bone scintyscan, suggesting residual disease. Suspect bone areas were irradiated with symptomatic improvement and 99mTc-MDP bone scintyscan showed the appearance of more condensed bone compared with the pre-radiotherapy pattern. Twelve months later he was readmitted to the hospital due to relapse of AML and died of sepsis within a few weeks. This report illustrates the usefulness of histological studies to establish diagnosis of AML in atypical cases, as well as the importance of CT scan and bone scintigraphy scan for the identification of osteolytic lesions. It also provides additional data as evidence that although osteolytic lesions indicate an adverse prognosis in AML, local irradiation results symptomatic relief.

ABSTRACT

This paper investigates parents' experiences during their newborns' hospitalization. It is a qualitative study. It takes place at Neonatal Care Unit of a School Hospital in Porto Alegre. The research subjects are parents of newborns placed in this Unit. The analysis process generates three topics: "Perceiving the baby's hospitalization as something difficult to experience", "Living the necessity of getting support", and "Living disease in a hospital". The importance of this work consists of articulating the elements which are present in parents' experiences, making possible a continuous nursing care with family valorization, specially through listening and supporting.

ABSTRACT

This paper emerged from a group experience about a theme related to human care: the contact. The experience is described, unveiling feelings and memories perceived while constructing the activity, building a concept of contact, here seen as one of the fundaments of human care. Human care was studied on an anthropological approach, lived in a group technique. Our meanings of contact were expressed with the words: senses, sensibility, representation, confidence, relationship. Each significance was worked and detailed since our concept of contact arose from the interrelation of them. Some theoretical reflection about the theme was done and constructs of this kind of care were elaborated, since it is considered one of the fundaments of human care.
