ABSTRACT

Superficial lymphadenectomy is an easy-to-perform and cost-effective routine technique. Despite its simplicity, it remains underutilized in veterinary medicine, with most practitioners being oncological surgeons. This study aims to enhance accessibility to the surgical procedure by providing anatomical representations of superficial lymphadenectomy in the carcasses of dogs and cats. A preliminary study involving two canines and two felines was conducted, with each group comprising a dog and a cat. Group A was designated to superficial lymphadenectomy techniques to create an illustrated step-by-step procedure, while group B underwent anatomical dissection to expose lymph nodes and their adnexa. The approach to superficial lymph nodes in dogs and cats is simple, allowing for the demonstration of superficial lymphadenectomy techniques in the corpses of dogs and cats without complications. This includes the dissection and presentation of anatomical structures adjacent to the lymph nodes. In conclusion, the techniques applied to subjects in groups A and B proved effective, successfully demonstrating and excising all superficial lymph nodes in the corpses of dogs and cats. These findings suggest that the developed set of techniques developed for lymph node excision holds promise for safe and effective application in live animals.

ABSTRACT

Good laboratory practices (GLP) increase the quality and traceability of results in health sciences research. However, factors such as high staff turnover, insufficient resources, and a lack of training for managers may limit their implementation in research and academic laboratories. This Scoping Review aimed to identify digital tools for managing academic health sciences and experimental medicine laboratories and their relationship with good practices. Following the PRISMA-ScR 2018 criteria, a search strategy was conducted until April 2021 in the databases PUBMED, Web of Sciences, and Health Virtual Library. A critical appraisal of the selected references was conducted, followed by data charting. The search identified twenty-one eligible articles, mainly originated from high-income countries, describing the development and/or implementation of thirty-two electronic management systems. Most studies described software functionalities, while nine evaluated and discussed impacts on management, reporting both improvements in the workflow and system limitations during implementation. In general, the studies point to a contribution to different management issues related to GLP principles. In conclusion, this review identified evolving evidence that digital laboratory management systems may represent important tools in compliance with the principles of good practices in experimental medicine and health sciences research.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To verify the immediate effect of the flexible resonance tube vocal technique on the oropharyngeal geometry and vocal acoustic parameters of individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and to study the correlation between oropharyngeal geometry and the intensity and fundamental frequency (f0) parameters of the voice. METHODS: Forty individuals participated-20 with PD and 20 healthy individuals, with a mean age of 60.95 (± 5.69) years. There were 10 men and 10 women in each group. All underwent pharyngometric analysis of the vocal tract and voice acoustics parameters before and after use of the vocal technique with a flexible resonance tube. RESULTS: After the technique, there was a reduction in pharyngeal cavity volume only in females in the healthy group, a reduction in shimmer values in females in both groups and males in PD group and an improvement in noise parameters in females in the PD group. There was a negative correlation between vocal tract volume and intensity, between f0 and vocal tract volume, between f0 and oropharyngeal junction area, between f0 and oral cavity volume as well as a positive correlation between oral cavity length and f0. CONCLUSION: The vocal technique with the flexible resonance tube applied to individuals with PD improved the subjects' voice quality in the perceptual and acoustic voice parameters. Regarding the oropharyngeal geometry, it was possible to observe its correlation with the parameters of vocal intensity and frequency in the studied population.
