ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this survey was to create a list of essential historical and contemporary readings for undergraduate and graduate students in the field of exercise physiology. METHODS: Fifty-two exercise physiologists/sport scientists served as referees, and each nominated ∼25 papers for inclusion in the list. In total, 396 papers were nominated by the referees. This list was then sent back to the referees, with the instructions to nominate the "100 essential papers in sports and exercise physiology." RESULTS: The referees cast 4722 votes. The 100 papers with the highest number of votes received 51% (2406) of the total number of votes. A total of 37 papers in the list of "100 essential papers" were published >50 years ago, and 63 papers were published since 1973. CONCLUSIONS: This list of essential studies will provide a perspective on contemporary studies, the "giant's shoulders" to enable young scholars to "see further" or to understand where they have "come from." This compilation is also meant to impress on students that, given the (lack of) technology available in the past, some of the early science required enormous intuitive leaps on the part of historical scientists.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate how cycling time-trial (TT) performance changes over a cycling season, both in a "fresh" state and in a "fatigued" state (durability). Additionally, the aim was to explore whether these changes are related to changes in underlying physiological factors such as gross efficiency, energy expenditure (EE), and substrate oxidation (fat oxidation [FatOx] and carbohydrate oxidation [CarbOx]). METHODS: Sixteen male semiprofessional cyclists visited the laboratory on 3 occasions during a cycling season (PRE, START, and IN) and underwent a performance test in both fresh and fatigued states (after 38.1 [4.9] kJ/kg), containing a submaximal warm-up for the measurement of gross efficiency, EE, FatOx, and CarbOx and a maximal TT of 1 (TT1min) and 10 minutes (TT10min). Results were compared across states (fresh vs fatigued) and periods (PRE, START, and IN). RESULTS: The average power output (PO) in TT1min decreased (P < .05) from fresh to fatigued state across all observed periods, whereas there was no change in the PO in TT10min. Over the course of the season, the PO in TT1min in the fatigued state improved more compared with the PO in TT1min in the fresh state. Furthermore, while EE did not significantly change, there was an increase in FatOx and a decrease in CarbOx toward the fatigued state. These changes diminished during the cycling season (IN), indicating a greater contribution of CarbOx in the fatigued state. CONCLUSIONS: TT1min performance is more sensitive to fatigue compared with TT10min. Also, during a cycling season, durability improves more when compared with fresh maximal POs, which is also observed in the changes in substrate oxidation.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates if countries are more focused on certain specializations (one day, climb, sprint, time trial [TT] and grand tour [GC]) in male professional road cycling and if this is possibly linked to the countries landscape (for example, does a mountainous country have more climbers?) and anthropometric characteristics (does the mountainous country also have lighter cyclists?) of their cyclists. METHODS: Body weight, height, procyclingstats (PCS) points per specialty were gathered from 1810 professional cyclists out of 15 countries, as well as the elevation span of those countries. To compare the anthropometric differences between different countries, height was normalized based on the average height of the countries' population, while BMI was used as a correction for body weight. RESULTS: The average anthropometrics (body weight and height) of professional cyclists in a country are related to the relative number of PCS points collected in GC, sprint and climb races. This means that when a country has shorter and lighter cyclists, they score relatively better in GC and climb races and vice versa for sprint races, which indicates that countries are focused on certain specialties. However, these relationships were not found for TT and one day PCS points. In addition, countries with larger cyclists have a less mountainous (elevation span) landscape compared to countries with lighter cyclists. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest a selection bias towards smaller/lighter or taller/heavier cyclists in various countries, probably caused by the terrain of their home country, leading to missed opportunities for some cyclists to reach professional level.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: In distance running, pacing is characterized by changes in speed, leading to runners dropping off the leader's pace until a few remain to contest victory with a final sprint. Pacing behavior has been well studied over the last 30 years, but much remains unknown. It might be related to finishing position, finishing time, and dependent on critical speed (CS), a surrogate of physiologic capacity. We hypothesized a relationship between CS and the distance at which runners "fell behind" and "let go" from the leader or were "outsprinted" as contributors to performance. METHODS: 100-m split times were obtained for athletes in the men's 10,000-m at the 2008 Olympics (N = 35). Split times were individually compared with the winner at the point of "falling behind" (successive split times progressively slower than the winner), "letting go" (large increase in time for distance compared with winner), or "outsprinted" (falling behind despite active acceleration) despite being with the leader with 400 m remaining. RESULTS: Race times ranged between 26:55 and 29:23 (world record = 26:17). There were 3 groups who fell behind at ∼1000 (n = 11), ∼6000 (n = 16), and ∼9000 m (n = 2); let go at ∼4000 (n = 10), ∼7000 (n = 14), and ∼9500 m (n = 5); or were outkicked (n = 6). There was a moderate correlation between CS and finishing position (r = .82), individual mean pace (r = .79), "fell behind" distance (r = .77), and "let go" distance (r = .79). D' balance was correlated with performance in the last 400 m (r = .87). CONCLUSIONS: Athletes displayed distinct patterns of falling behind and letting go. CS serves as a moderate predictor of performance and final placing. Final placing during the sprint is related to preservation of D' balance.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study determined the evolution of performance and pacing for each winner of the men's Olympic 1500-m running track final from 1924 to 2020. METHODS: Data were obtained from publicly available sources. When official splits were unavailable, times from sources such as YouTube were included and interpolated from video records. Final times, lap splits, and position in the peloton were included. The data are presented relative to 0 to 400 m, 400 to 800 m, 800 to 1200 m, and 1200 to 1500 m. Critical speed and D' were calculated using athletes' season's best times. RESULTS: Performance improved ∼25 seconds from 1924 to 2020, with most improvement (∼19 s) occurring in the first 10 finals. However, only 2 performances were world records, and only one runner won the event twice. Pacing evolved from a fast start-slow middle-fast finish pattern (reverse J-shaped) to a slower start with steady acceleration in the second half (J-shaped). The coefficient of variation for lap speeds ranged from 1.4% to 15.3%, consistent with a highly tactical pacing pattern. With few exceptions, the eventual winners were near the front throughout, although rarely in the leading position. There is evidence of a general increase in both critical speed and D' that parallels performance. CONCLUSIONS: An evolution in the pacing pattern occurred across several "eras" in the history of Olympic 1500-m racing, consistent with better trained athletes and improved technology. There has been a consistent tactical approach of following opponents until the latter stages, and athletes should develop tactical flexibility, related to their critical speed and D', in planning prerace strategy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Individuals after stroke are less active, experience more fatigue, and perform activities at a slower pace than peers with no impairments. These problems might be caused by an increased aerobic energy expenditure during daily tasks and a decreased aerobic capacity after stroke. The aim of this study was to quantify relative aerobic load (ie, the ratio between aerobic energy expenditure and aerobic capacity) during daily-life activities after stroke. METHODS: Seventy-nine individuals after stroke (14 in Functional Ambulation Category [FAC] 3, 25 in FAC 4, and 40 in FAC 5) and 22 peers matched for age, sex, and body mass index performed a maximal exercise test and 5 daily-life activities at a preferred pace for 5 minutes. Aerobic energy expenditure (mL O2/kg/min) and economy (mL O2/kg/unit of distance) were derived from oxygen uptake ($\dot{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{O}}_2$). Relative aerobic load was defined as aerobic energy expenditure divided by peak aerobic capacity (%$\dot{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{O}}_2$peak) and by $\dot{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{o}}_2$ at the ventilatory threshold (%$\dot{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{o}}_2$-VT) and compared in individuals after stroke and individuals with no impairments. RESULTS: Individuals after stroke performed activities at a significantly higher relative aerobic load (39%-82% $\dot{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{o}}_2$peak) than peers with no impairments (38%-66% $\dot{\mathrm{V}}{\mathrm{o}}_2$peak), despite moving at a significantly slower pace. Aerobic capacity in individuals after stroke was significantly lower than that in peers with no impairments. Movement was less economical in individuals after stroke than in peers with no impairments. CONCLUSION: Individuals after stroke experience a high relative aerobic load during cyclic daily-life activities, despite adopting a slower movement pace than peers with no impairments. Perhaps individuals after stroke limit their movement pace to operate at sustainable relative aerobic load levels at the expense of pace and economy. IMPACT: Improving aerobic capacity through structured aerobic training in a rehabilitation program should be further investigated as a potential intervention to improve mobility and functioning after stroke.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To provide reference values of cardiorespiratory fitness for individuals post-stroke in clinical rehabilitation and to gain insight in characteristics related to cardiorespiratory fitness post stroke. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study. Reference equations of cardiopulmonary fitness corrected for age and sex for the fifth, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 95th percentile were constructed with quantile regression analysis. The relation between patient characteristics and cardiorespiratory fitness was determined by linear regression analyses adjusted for sex and age. Multivariate regression models of cardiorespiratory fitness were constructed. SETTING: Clinical rehabilitation center. PARTICIPANTS: Individuals post-stroke who performed a cardiopulmonary exercise test as part of clinical rehabilitation between July 2015 and May 2021 (N=405). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Cardiorespiratory fitness in terms of peak oxygen uptake (V˙O2peak) and oxygen uptake at ventilatory threshold (V˙O2-VT). RESULTS: References equations for cardiorespiratory fitness stratified by sex and age were provided based on 405 individuals post-stroke. Median V˙O2peak was 17.8[range 8.4-39.6] mL/kg/min and median V˙O2-VT was 9.7[range 5.9-26.6] mL/kg/min. Cardiorespiratory fitness was lower in individuals who were older, women, using beta-blocker medication, and in individuals with a higher body mass index and lower motor ability. CONCLUSIONS: Population specific reference values of cardiorespiratory fitness for individuals post-stroke corrected for age and sex were presented. These can give individuals post-stroke and health care providers insight in their cardiorespiratory fitness compared with their peers. Furthermore, they can be used to determine the potential necessity for cardiorespiratory fitness training as part of the rehabilitation program for an individual post-stroke to enhance their fitness, functioning and health. Especially, individuals post-stroke with more mobility limitations and beta-blocker use are at a higher risk of low cardiorespiratory fitness.

ABSTRACT

Scientific interest in pacing goes back >100 years. Contemporary interest, both as a feature of athletic competition and as a window into understanding fatigue, goes back >30 years. Pacing represents the pattern of energy use designed to produce a competitive result while managing fatigue of different origins. Pacing has been studied both against the clock and during head-to-head competition. Several models have been used to explain pacing, including the teleoanticipation model, the central governor model, the anticipatory-feedback-rating of perceived exertion model, the concept of a learned template, the affordance concept, the integrative governor theory, and as an explanation for "falling behind." Early studies, mostly using time-trial exercise, focused on the need to manage homeostatic disturbance. More recent studies, based on head-to-head competition, have focused on an improved understanding of how psychophysiology, beyond the gestalt concept of rating of perceived exertion, can be understood as a mediator of pacing and as an explanation for falling behind. More recent approaches to pacing have focused on the elements of decision making during sport and have expanded the role of psychophysiological responses including sensory-discriminatory, affective-motivational, and cognitive-evaluative dimensions. These approaches have expanded the understanding of variations in pacing, particularly during head-to-head competition.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the presence of the relative age effect (RAE) in (semi-)professional cycling, especially within selecting cyclists for Continental (CT) development teams. Data were collected from www.procyclingstats.com (PCS). Cyclists out of the top-25 countries of the PCS ranking that were part of a CT team between 2005 and 2016 and born between January 1986 and December 1997 were included (n = 2854). Distributions of cyclists in different birth quarters (Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4) as well as for different starting years at CT level (U23year1, U23year2, U23year3 and U23year4) and reaching professional level or not were investigated using the Chi-square goodness-of-fit test. A RAE was found for cyclists that did not reach professional level, which can be explained by cyclists starting at CT level U23year1 and U23year2 (19 and 20 years old). Meaning that for cyclists at 19 and 20 years old, there is a selection bias towards relatively older (Q1) cyclists at the expense of relatively younger (Q4) cyclists. Within the cyclists that reached professional level, no RAE was found, indicating that the RAE diminishes at professional level. This study provides insight into possible selection errors while selecting cyclists for CT development teams.

Training intensity distribution is important to training program design. The zones 1 to 2 boundary can be defined by the Talk Test and the rating of perceived exertion. The zones 2 to 3 boundary can be defined by respiratory gas exchange, maximal lactate steady state, or, more simply, by critical speed (CS). The upper boundary of zone 3 is potential defined by the velocity at maximum oxygen uptake (vVO2max), although no clear strategy has emerged to categorize this intensity. This is not normally definable outside the laboratory. PURPOSE: This study predicts vVO2max from CS, determined from 1 (1.61 km) and 2 (3.22 km) citizen races in well-trained runners. METHODS: A heterogeneous group of well-trained runners (N = 22) performed 1- and 2-mile races and were studied during submaximal and maximal treadmill running to measure oxygen uptake, allowing computation of vVO2max. This vVO2max was compared with CS. RESULTS: vVO2max (4.82 [0.53] m·s-1) was strongly correlated with CS (4.37 [0.49] m·s-1; r = .84, standard error of estimate [SEE] = 0.132 m·s-1), 1-mile speed (5.09 [0.51] m·s-1; r = .84, SEE = 0.130 m·s-1), and 2-mile speed (4.68 [0.49] m·s-1; r = .86, SEE = 0.120 m·s-1). CONCLUSIONS: CS, calculated from 2 citizen races (or even training time trials), can be used to make reasonable estimates of vVO2max, which can be used in the design of running training programs.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between the percentage of a fatiguing ambulatory task completed and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) appears to be linear and scalar, with a relatively narrow "window." Recent evidence has suggested that a similar relationship may exist for muscularly demanding tasks. METHODS: To determine whether muscularly demanding tasks fit within this "ambulatory window," we tested resistance-trained athletes performing bench press and leg press with different loadings predicted to allow 5, 10, 20, and 30 repetitions and measured RPE (category ratio scale) at the end of the concentric action for each repetition. RESULTS: There was a regular, and strongly linear, pattern of growth of RPE for both bench press (r = .89) and leg press (r = .90) during the tasks that allowed 5.2 (1.2), 11.6 (1.9), 22.7 (2.0), and 30.8 (3.2) repetitions for bench press and 5.5 (1.5), 11.4 (1.6), 20.2 (3.0), and 32.4 (4.2) repetitions for leg press, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The path of the RPE growth versus percentage task fit within the window evident for ambulatory tasks. The results suggest that the RPE versus percentage task completed relationship is scalar, relatively linear, and apparently independent of exercise mode.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To determine if workload and seasonal periods (preseason vs in season) are associated with the incidence of injuries and illnesses in female professional cyclists. METHODS: Session rating of perceived exertion was used to quantify internal workload and was collected from 15 professional female cyclists, from 33 athlete seasons. One week (acute) workload, 4 weeks (chronic) workload, and 3 acute:chronic workload models were analyzed. Two workload models are based on moving averages of the ratios, the acute:chronic workload ratio (ACWR), and the ACWR uncoupled (ACWRuncoup). The difference between both is the chronic load; in ACWR, the acute load is part of the chronic load, and in ACWRuncoup, the acute and chronic load are uncoupled. The third workload model is based on exponentially weighted moving averages of the ratios. In addition, the athlete season is divided into the preseason and in season. RESULTS: Generalized estimating equations analysis was used to assess the associations between the workload ratios and the occurrence of injuries and illnesses. High values of acute workload (P = .048), ACWR (P = .02), ACWRuncoup (P = .02), exponentially weighted moving averages of the ratios (P = .01), and the in season (P = .0001) are significantly associated with the occurrence of injury. No significant associations were found between the workload models, the seasonal periods, and the occurrence of illnesses. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest the importance of monitoring workload and workload ratios in female professional cyclists to lower the risk of injuries and therefore improve their performances. Furthermore, these results indicate that, in the preseason, additional stressors occur, which could lead to an increased risk of injuries.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate whether (semi-)professional cyclists' execution of a training programme differs from the coach's designed training programme. Also, the study sought to ascertain, in instances where the training sessions were indeed executed as designed by the coach, whether the perception of the cyclists differed from the intention of the coach. This study highlights the differences between the coach and the individual cyclist. In total, 747 training sessions were collected from 11 (semi-)professional cyclists. Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) and session Rating of Perceived Exertion (sRPE) were compared with intended RPE (iRPE) and intended sRPE (isRPE), planned by the coach. Pearson's correlation, regression coefficients and Typical Error of Estimate (TEE) were used to identify differences between the executed and planned training sessions. Moderate to large TEEs were noted between executed and intended sRPE, which indicates that cyclists do not always execute the training programme planned by the coach. Furthermore, when the training was executed as planned by the coach, very large correlations but moderate to very large TEEs were noted between cyclists' (s)RPE and the coach's i(s)RPE, with unique individual regression coefficients. This indicates that the relationship between RPE and iRPE is unique to each cyclist. Both the different execution and perception of the training programme by the individual cyclists could cause an impaired training adaptation. Therefore, the coach must pay attention to the perception of training sessions by the individual cyclist. Improved individual management of training load could result in the optimisation of the proposed training programme.

ABSTRACT

Training-induced adaptations in muscle morphology, including their magnitude and individual variation, remain relatively unknown in elite athletes. We reported changes in rowing performance and muscle morphology during the general and competitive preparation phases in elite rowers. Nineteen female rowers completed 8 weeks of general preparation, including concurrent endurance and high-load resistance training (HLRT). Seven rowers were monitored during a subsequent 16 weeks of competitive preparation, including concurrent endurance and resistance training with additional plyometric loading (APL). Vastus lateralis muscle volume, physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA), fascicle length, and pennation angle were measured using 3D ultrasonography. Rowing ergometer power output was measured as mean power in the final 4 minutes of an incremental test. Rowing ergometer power output improved during general preparation [+2 ± 2%, effect size (ES) = 0.22, P = 0.004], while fascicle length decreased (-5 ± 8%, ES = -0.47, P = 0.020). Rowing power output further improved during competitive preparation (+5 ± 3%, ES = 0.52, P = 0.010). Here, morphological adaptations were not significant, but demonstrated large ESs for fascicle length (+13 ± 19%, ES = 0.93), medium for pennation angle (-9 ± 15%, ES = -0.71), and small for muscle volume (+8 ± 13%, ES = 0.32). Importantly, rowers showed large individual differences in their training-induced muscle adaptations. In conclusion, vastus lateralis muscles of elite female athletes are highly adaptive to specific training stimuli, and adaptations largely differ between individual athletes. Therefore, coaches are encouraged to closely monitor their athletes' individual (muscle) adaptations to better evaluate the effectiveness of their training programs and finetune them to the athlete's individual needs.

BACKGROUND: Individuals post-stroke walk slower than their able-bodied peers, which limits participation. This might be attributed to neurological impairments, but could also be caused by a mismatch between aerobic capacity and aerobic load of walking leading to an unsustainable relative aerobic load at most economic speed and preference for a lower walking speed. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the impact of aerobic capacity and aerobic load of walking on walking ability post-stroke? METHODS: Forty individuals post-stroke (more impaired N = 21; preferred walking speed (PWS)<0.8 m/s, less impaired N = 19), and 15 able-bodied individuals performed five, 5-minute treadmill walking trials at 70 %, 85 %, 100 %, 115 % and 130 % PWS. Energy expenditure (mlO2/kg/min) and energy cost (mlO2/kg/m) were derived from oxygen uptake (V˙O2). Relative load was defined as energy expenditure divided by peak aerobic capacity (%V˙O2peak) and by V˙O2 at ventilatory threshold (%V˙O2-VT). Relative load and energy cost at PWS were compared with one-way ANOVA's. The effect of speed on these parameters was modeled with Generalized Estimating Equations. RESULTS: Both more and less impaired individuals post-stroke showed lower PWS than able-bodied controls (0.44 [0.19-0.76] and 1.04 [0.81-1.43] vs 1.36 [0.89-1.53] m/s) and higher relative load at PWS (50.2 ± 14.4 and 51.7 ± 16.8 vs 36.2 ± 7.6 %V˙O2peak and 101.9 ± 20.5 and 97.0 ± 27.3 vs 64.9 ± 13.8 %V˙O2-VT). Energy cost at PWS of more impaired (0.30 [.19-1.03] mlO2/kg/m) was higher than less-impaired (0.19[0.10-0.24] mlO2/kg/m) and able-bodied (0.15 [0.13-0.18] mlO2/kg/m). For post-stroke individuals, increasing walking speed above PWS decreased energy cost, but resulted in a relative load above endurance threshold. SIGNIFICANCE: Individuals post-stroke seem to reduce walking speed to prevent unsustainably high relative aerobic loads at the expense of reduced economy. When aiming to improve walking ability post-stroke, it is important to consider training aerobic capacity.
