ABSTRACT
The development of the working animals welfare also promotes the welfare of the human beings involved with their utilization. Nevertheless, the veterinarians (DVM) are on the fringes of that process. The present paper focuses on ethical issues involved in the use of working animals, with emphasis on draught animals utilized in Brazil, reinforcing the importance of DVM in this theme. First, we briefly explain the history of domestication and use of animals for work. Second, we list the economic, environmental and social importance of this usage. Third, we present their more common working conditions. Fourth, we show the main ethical questions and philosophical systems involved. Finally, alternatives and improvements in the use of working animals were mentioned. Keywords: Working animals, animal welfare, ethics, rural extension, draught.
A promoção do bem-estar dos animais de trabalho também promove o bem-estar dos seres humanos envolvidos com o seu aproveitamento. Apesar disso, os médicos veterinários (MV) estão à margem desse processo. Este trabalho abordou questões éticas envolvidas no uso de animais de trabalho, com ênfase em animais de tração utilizados no Brasil, reforçando a importância do MV neste setor. Primeiro, foi exposto um histórico resumido da domesticação e do aproveitamento dos animais para o trabalho. Segundo, as importâncias econômica, ambiental e social desse aproveitamento foram listadas. Terceiro, foram apresentadas suas condições de trabalho mais comuns. Quarto, os principais questionamentos éticos e sistemas filosóficos envolvidos foram exibidos. E finalmente, as alternativas e melhorias no uso de animais de trabalho foram tratadas. ABSTRACT
Several nutritional supplements are used empirically in horses. Trivalent chromium (Cr) potentiates insulin and sensitizes the tissues where it acts, to be part of chromodulin, optimizing its action in different mammals. However, there are few studies relating to dietary supplementation of horses with Cr. The objective of this review was to highlight from the scientific literature on the possible ergogenic benefits of Cr on performance of this species. Cr has the potential to act as an effective and licit nutritional ergogenic agent in athletic horses of different modalities, especially in prolonged duration, in which the dependence of lipolysis is increased. Diversos suplementos nutricionais são utilizados de forma empírica nos equinos. O cromo trivalente (Cr), ao fazer parte da cromodulina, potencializa a insulina e sensibiliza os tecidos onde ela age, otimizando sua ação em diferentes mamíferos. Contudo, existem poucos trabalhos referentes à suplementação dietética de equinos com Cr. O objetivo dessa revisão foi destacar da literatura dados concretos sobre os possíveis benefícios ergogênicos do cromo no desempenho dessa espécie. O Cr possui o potencial de atuar como agente ergogênico nutricional efetivo e lícito em cavalos de diferentes modalidades atléticas, principalmente nos de duração prolongada, em que a dependência da lipólise é maior. In the last years, there was a big change in the sheep production in Brazil, specially with the feedlot of the animals, to grown up the profits. These managements changes were responsible for the increase on obstructive urolithiasis cases. Many nutritional and management factors are pointed like predispose for this disease. Usually the treatment is ineffective and preventive measures are very important to reduce the occurrence of new cases. There are few data about the real situation of the ovine urolithiasis in Brazil.
A intensificação na produção de ovinos no Brasil foi uma tendência nos últimos anos, devido à profissionalização da atividade. Estas alterações no manejo dos animais foram responsáveis pelo aumento dos quadros de urolitíase obstrutiva. Diversos fatores nutricionais e de manejo têm sido implicados como predisponentes para o surgimento da doença. Os resultados com tratamento ainda são pouco efetivos e a adoção de medidas preventivas adequadas pode reduzir o aparecimento de novos casos nos rebanhos. Dados sobre a real situação da urolitíase no Brasil ainda são escassos.
