ABSTRACT

Musculoskeletal disorders characteristically induce pain and limitations in mobility, ability, and overall functioning. In athletes, including basketball players, disorders such as back pain, postural changes, and spinal injuries are common. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the prevalence of back pain and musculoskeletal disorders in basketball players and ascertain the associated factors. Methods: The Embase, PubMed, and Scopus databases were searched for studies published in English without a time limit. Using STATA, meta-analyses were performed to estimate the prevalence of pain and musculoskeletal disorders of the back and spine. Results: Of the 4135 articles identified, 33 studies were included in this review, with 27 studies included in the meta-analysis. Of these, 21 were used for the meta-analysis of back pain, 6 articles were used for the meta-analysis of spinal injury, and 2 studies were used for the meta-analysis of postural changes. The overall prevalence of back pain was 43% [95% CI, -1% to 88%]; of these, the prevalence of neck pain was 36% [95% CI, 22-50%], the prevalence of back pain was 16% [95% CI, 4-28%], the prevalence of low back pain was 26% [95% CI, 16-37%], the prevalence of thoracic spine pain was 6% [95% CI, 3-9%]. The combined prevalence of spinal injury and spondylolysis was 10% [95% CI, 4-15%], with a prevalence of spondylolysis of 14% [95% CI, 0.1-27%]. The combined prevalence of hyperkyphosis and hyperlordosis was 30% [95% CI, 9-51%]. In conclusion, we found a high prevalence of neck pain, followed by low back pain and back pain, in basketball players. Thus, prevention programs are important to improve health and sports performance.

ABSTRACT

Thoracic spine pain (TSP) is a common condition in the general adult population, with a similar prevalence in children and adolescents. An in-depth understanding of risk factors can assist in the identification of potential targets for effective prevention strategies. This study aimed to determine the incidence of TSP and ongoing TSP and identify its predictors in high school students. This longitudinal study was conducted in 2017 (baseline-T1), and follow-up surveys were completed in 2018 (T2). The variable "thoracic spine pain" was observed using the Nordic questionnaire, and associated variables were observed through the Baecke questionnaire and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Statistical association methods were used for bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Among the participants, the one-year prevalence (ongoing TSP) was 38.4%, and the one-year incidence (new TSP) was 10.1%. Significant risk factors for ongoing TSP were adolescent females (RR = 2.14), in the age group of 15 to 18 years (RR = 1.41), clinical mental health problems (RR = 3.07), borderline mental health problems (RR = 2.02), mental health problems, sitting while using a tablet (RR = 1.93), distance of the eye from cell phone screen of or more than 20 cm (RR = 1.69), distance of the eye from the PC screen of or more than 30 cm (RR = 1.53), cell phone mobile use duration of or more than 3 h (RR = 1.60), tablet use time of or more than 3 h (RR = 2.08), and semi-lying prone position while using the cell phone (RR= 1.47), and these were also significant predictors of TSP episodes. Significant risk factors for new TSP were adolescent female sex (RR = 1.88), level, clinical mental health problems (RR = 4.26), borderline mental health problems (RR = 2.07), semi-lying prone position while using cell phone (RR = 1.71) or tablet (RR = 2.31), and mobile phone use duration equal to or greater than 3 h (RR = 1.72). We conclude that there is a high prevalence of TSP in high school students, which is associated with the female sex, mental health problems, and use of electronic devices for an inappropriate duration in an improper position.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Pilates method on quality of life and bone remodeling markers in a group of older women. METHODS: A longitudinal prospective study with intervention was performed on 40 women aged over 60 years; they were divided into two groups: one submitted to a 50-min Pilates exercise session once a week for 20 weeks (Pilates), and the other was not (Control). Both groups were compared for quality of life using the Medical Outcomes Study 36, and for bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BSAP) and Type 1 collagen C-telopeptide (CTx) bone remodeling markers. RESULTS: The Pilates group presented improvement in the quality of life evaluation scores: physical functioning (67.50 ± 18.88 × 86.25 ± 9.58; p = 0.0232), and physical component summary (65.00 ± 14.39 × 79.70 ± 3.83; p = 0.0220). The Pilates group also presented higher scores than that of Controls after the exercise program: physical functioning (86.25 ± 9.58 × 55.50 ± 20.83, p = 0.0003), physical role (100.00 ± 0.00 × 41.25 ± 46.79, p = 0.0009), emotional role (100.00 ± 0.00 × 48.33 ± 50.12, p = 0.0046), vitality (82.50 ± 14.28 × 60.25 ± 21.43, p = 0.011), physical component summary (79.70 ± 3.83 × 54.90 ± 15.05, p < 0.0001), and emotional component summary (74.10 ± 8.37 × 54.18 ± 22.55, p = 0.0111). No changes were noted in bone remodeling markers [CTx (0.39 ± 0.26 × 0.38 ± 0.22 ng/mL) and BSAP (10.73 ± 2.40 × 11.01 ± 3.56 µg/L)] and did not differ from the Control group both before (CTx: 0.39 ± 0.26 × 0.37 ± 0.17 ng/mL; BSAP: 10.73 ± 2.40 × 10.58 ± 3.49 µg/L; p > 0.05) and after exercise (CTx: 0.38 ± 0.22 × 0.38 ± 0.22 ng/mL; BSAP: 11.01 ± 3.56 × 9.85 ± 3.12 µg/L; p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The group of women submitted to Pilates presented improved quality of life but without changes in bone remodeling.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To verify the association among sociodemographic variables, physical activity level and health-related quality of life in adults aged 20 years and over. METHODS: Population-based study, with household sample by clusters. The dependent variables were the PCS and MCS scores of the instrument 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), the independent variables were gathered in sociodemographic characteristics and the level of physical activity. Absolute and relative frequency distributions were used for categorical variables and bivariate analysis, using Student's t-test and ANOVA and multivariate using non-conditional logistic regression. RESULTS: Of the 600 interviewees, the mean PCS score for men was 80.2 and for women 74.6, while for MCS, 83.8 (±16.9) and 76.5 (±23.3), for men and women, respectively. Women tend to report lower scores than men in all domains: men (OR=4.83) and women (OR=4.80) were older (OR=4.34) (OR=3.57) and sedentary women (OR=1.90) were associated with lower PCS scores, while older men (OR=3.96) and widowed and separated' (OR=3.03) had lower MSC scores. CONCLUSION: HRQoL was associated with advancing age and schooling, in both sexes, sedentary women and widowed and separated men.

ABSTRACT

Abstract - Changes in the suboccipital muscles and the hamstrings may interfere with head posture and the biomechanics of the temporomandibular joint, both of which contribute to the severity of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of a global postural exercise program (GPEP) on pain intensity and mouth-opening range of motion (ROM) in women with TMD. The participants were comprised of 30 women with TMD who were divided into two groups: an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG). A pressure algometer was used for pain assessment and a paquimeter was used to measure ROM. The duration of the GPEP was six weeks. In the EG, there was a reduction in pain intensity and an increase in mouth-opening ROM compared to the CG. Therefore, we concluded that the GPEP was effective in relieving pain in all of the evaluated muscles and regions, and in increasing mouth-opening ROM in women with TMD.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess the level of functional capacity in subjects aged 60 years and older, who have lower back pain, and its association with demographic, socioeconomic, work-related, lifestyle-related and disease mentioned variables. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 246 elderly registered at the Family Health Strategy of Vila São Paulo, Bauru,SP, Brazil, who reported lower back pain and were sampled by a two-stage cluster technique. The subjects were interviewed at home by using a multidimensional instrument (demographic; socioeconomic aspects; life style; work characterization; disease mentioned), and also the IPAQ, the Nordic and the Roland Morris questionnaires. A bivariate and multivariate descriptive logistic regression analysis was carried out. RESULTS: The prevalence of lower back pain in men was of 25.1% and in women it was of 35.1%. The mean score in the functional capacity assessment was 10.46 ± 5.62. A fraction of 67.5% of the elderly demonstrated an inappropriate functional capacity. The age group from 70 to 80 years old, the subjects reporting three or more diseases and the sedentary group presented an independent association with inappropriate functional capacity. ABSTRACT

Objective The objective was to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in the neck/shoulders of school children and its relationship with the level of physical activity and sedentary activities (time spent on TV and computer and/or video game). Materials and methods We conducted a cross-sectional study with a sample of 524 5th to 8th grade students (278 boys and 246 girls), enrolled in all five urban elementary schools in the municipality of Bauru (SP), aged between 10 and 14 years old. Sociodemographic data, sedentary activities – time spent on TV and computer and/or videogame - and level of physical activity - was collected through a Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (PAQ-C). Results The results showed that the prevalence of localized pain in the neck/shoulders was of 30.1% for boys and girls. It was also found that there is a predominance of onset of pain reported in neck/shoulders in boys related to the frequency and amount of hours a day watching TV and hours on the computer, whereas in girls the association was with frequency and amount of hours they watch TV daily. Conclusions It can be concluded that the pain in the neck/shoulders are common in children and that understanding the relationship between variables enables valuable elements of measures aimed at maintaining, improving and promoting the welfare of students. .

ABSTRACT

This study sought to investigate the quality of life of women who suffer from breast cancer and are part of a support group, comparing the data gathered from mastectomized women who had breast reconstruction and women who had not had surgery. It also compared data of women who had quadrantectomy surgery but did not need reconstruction and those who had not had reconstruction surgery. It is a quantitative transversal study, and data was collected by application of a questionnaire to the respondents and by the SF-36 of the WHO. Fifty women with average age of 57.2 years participated in the survey. The groups were compared against each other - two by two - considering types of surgery, using the Mann-Whitney Test at a 5% level of significance. The results showed that women who had quadrantectomy surgery and did not need reconstruction are those who had the highest average scores in all fields and therefore have the best quality of life. They are followed by the group of women who had a mastectomy and reconstruction. The mastectomized group of women who had not had reconstruction surgery were seen to have a very low level of quality of life. They are followed by the group of women who had quadrantectomy surgery and also had not had reconstruction.
