ABSTRACT

In a double-blind randomized study, 155 male patients with uncomplicated urethral gonorrhea were given 200 mg (one capsule with 200 mg and one capsule with placebo; n = 77) or 400 mg (two capsules with 200 mg; n = 78) of enoxacin orally. The cure rates in the 200- and 400-mg treatment groups were 90 and 92%, respectively. The enoxacin MIC for the isolated Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains ranged from 0.015 to 0.12 microgram/ml. Postgonococcal urethritis was diagnosed in 29 (42%) patients in the 200-mg treatment group and 19 (26%) patients in the 400-mg treatment group. Side effects (nausea, headache, and vomiting) occurred in 2 (3%) of the 77 patients in the 200-mg treatment group and in 3 (4%) of the 78 patients in the 400-mg treatment group.

ABSTRACT

The hair root status (trichogram) was studied in eleven patients with primary and eight with secondary syphilis. Variables studied in addition to the hair roots were absence or presence of hair root sheaths, deformities and hair roots with angulations exceeding 20 degrees. A decrease in the number of anagen hair roots and an increase in the number of catagen hair roots, dysplastic/dystrophic roots and anagen hair roots with sheaths and more than 20 degrees angulation was observed in both groups of patients. No difference was demonstrable between the findings in primary and those in secondary syphilis. Whether the abnormalities found in the trichogram are specific of syphilis, is unknown.

ABSTRACT

One hundred and twenty-three female patients suffering from uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhoea were treated in a double blind randomised trial with either 200 mg enoxacin (one capsule of 200 mg, one of placebo) or 400 mg enoxacin (two capsules of 200 mg). The cure rate in the 46 evaluable patients in the 400 mg group was 100%, and in the 40 evaluable patients in the 200 mg group 98.7%. Minor side effects such as nausea, headache and skin rash occurred in three of 109 evaluable patients (2.8%). The minimum inhibitory concentration of enoxacin for the Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains isolated varied between 0.03 and 0.12 mcg/ml. Enoxacin would seem to be a very effective drug in the treatment of uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhoea in female patients.

ABSTRACT

In a double-blind, randomized study the efficacy of oral ketoconazole (400 mg for 5 days) was compared with that of topical miconazole (1200 mg a single dose) in the treatment of 42 patients with vaginal candidosis. One week after the start of therapy the mycological cure rate was 87% in the ketoconazole group and 95% in the miconazole group, indicating that both regimens are equally effective. No major side-effects were observed.

ABSTRACT

One hundred and sixty-four male patients suffering from urethral gonorrhoea were treated in an open randomised trial with either 250 mg (n = 85) or 500 mg (n = 79) ciprofloxacin administered in one tablet. Cure rates in both groups were 100%. Postgonococcal urethritis was observed in 31 of 85 (36%) patients in the first group, and in 21 of 79 patients (27%) in the second group. Side-effects were minor, occurring in four patients in the 250 mg group (4.7%) and in seven in the 500 mg group (8.9%). The side-effects consisted of nausea, diarrhoea and headache. Ciprofloxacin would appear to be a very effective drug in the treatment of urethral gonorrhoea in males.

ABSTRACT

123 Female patients suffering from uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhoea were treated with either 200 mg or 400 mg enoxacin. The cure rate in the 400 mg group was 100%; the cure rate in the 200 mg group was 95.7% 212 Male patients suffering from urethral gonorrhoea were treated with either 250 mg or 500 mg ciprofloxacin (one tablet). Cure rates in both groups were 100%. Post-gonococcal urethritis was observed in 31 out of 85 (36%) patients in the first, and 21 out of 79 (27%) in the second group. In a pilot study 42 male patients suffering from non-gonococcal urethritis were treated during one week with I g ciprofloxacin daily. In 22 patients Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from the urethra: in 20 of these 22 cases Chlamydia trachomatis could not be cultured after treatment (cure rate 91%), but in 4 of these 20 cases (20%) and in 8 of the 20 Chlamydia trachomatis negative cases (40%) urine-sediment abnormalities were present after treatment.

ABSTRACT

Certain chemicals such as persulphates and formaldehyde are able to induce both immediate and delayed type reactions in the skin. The levels of delayed type response to persulphates (at 48 and 74 h), obtained by epicutaneous tests were subjected to comparative studies of shifts (48 versus 72 h) and statistical analysis. The 95% confidence limit of the mean value of shifts to persulphates was significantly higher than that of a standard routine battery as a whole and, with the exception of formaldehyde, also to that of other individual constituents of this battery. In the case of persulphates, this difference in shifts was due to an extremely low mean value of delayed-type response read at 48 h. The possible underlying mechanisms and the possible limiting rôle of vaso-active amines in the early evolution of delayed-type response is discussed.

ABSTRACT

Five patients with hand-, foot- and mouth disease, caused by infection with Coxsackievirus type A16, are described in an epidemic outbreak of this disease. Hand-, foot- and mouth disease, is characterized by a most distinctive enanthem-exanthemcomplex. In 65% of the cases a vesiculopapular exanthem is noted. Most cases are described in epidemic outbreaks. Although the vast majority of occurrences of the disease have been due to Coxsackie A16 viral infections, occasionally Coxsackie A5, A10 and enterovirus 71, seldom Coxsackievirus B1 or B3, have been etiologically incriminated. In this article attention is paid to the clinical characteristics, the epidemiology and the differential diagnostic aspects of hand-, foot- and mouth disease.
