ABSTRACT

Determinar el nivel de conocimiento de los estudiantes de enfermería de la Universidad Técnica de Ambato sobre la desinfección terminal del área quirúrgica. Metodología: Esta investigación es cuantitativa, con enfoque descriptivo de cohorte transversal ya que el nivel de conocimiento se ha representado mediante tablas y gráficos para describir la problemática del periodo octubre 2023-febrero 2024. Resultados: Se evidencia el alto porcentaje de respuestas incorrectas por cada ítem por parte de los estudiantes. La categoría desinfección fue respondida de manera incorrecta con un porcentaje del 26%, la categoría proceso de desinfección con el 55,6%, la categoría aplicación del DAN con el 45.8%, la categoría desinfectante del DAN con el 36,2% y, por último, la categoría riesgo y prevención del DAN con el 29,2%. Conclusiones: El nivel de conocimiento de los estudiantes sobre desinfección es bajo, porque no están lo suficientemente motivados o interesados en el tema de desinfección[AU]


Determine the level of knowledge of nursing students at the Technical University of Ambato about terminal disinfection of the surgical area.Methodology:This research is quantitative, with a descriptive cross-sectional cohort approach and the level of knowledge has been represented through tables and graphs to describe the problems of the period October 2023-February 2024.Results:A high percentage of incorrect answers for each item by the students is evident. The disinfection category was answered incorrectly with a percentage of 26%, the disinfection process category with 55.6%, the DAN application category with 45.8%, the disinfectant category with 36.2% and, finally, the DAN risk and prevention category. with 29.2%. Conclusions:The level of knowledge of students about disinfection is low, because they are not sufficiently motivated or interested in the topic of disinfection[AU]


Determinar o nível de conhecimento dos estudantes de enfermagem da Universidade Técnica de Ambato sobre desinfecção terminal da área cirúrgica. Objetivo: Determinar el nivel de conocimiento de los estudiantes de enfermería de la Universidad Técnica de Ambato sobre sepsis quirúrgica. Material y método: La presente investigación tiene un diseño de desarrollo observacional, de tipo descriptivo, cohorte transversal, con un enfoque cuantitativo, ya que el nivel de cono-cimiento se verá representado mediante tablas y gráficos para des-cribir la problemática del periodo octubre 2023 febrero 2024. Re-sultados: Se evidencia un alto porcentaje de respuestas incorrectas por cada ítem por parte de los estudiantes. La categoría Nivel de Conocimiento sobre Definición de Sepsis, fue respondida de ma-nera incorrecta con un porcentaje del 83,9%, la categoría Nivel de Conocimiento sobre Diagnóstico de Sepsis obtuvo 51,7% y, por úl-timo, la Nivel de Conocimiento sobre Tratamiento de Sepsis con el 29,2%. Conclusiones: El nivel de conocimiento de los estudiantes sobre Sepsis Quirúrgica es malo, debido a que existe una subesti-mación de la gravedad de la sepsis como afección potencialmente mortal, lo que puede traer un impacto negativo en los pacientes[AU]

The category Level of Knowledge about Definition of Sepsis was answered incorrectly with a percentage of 83.9%, the category Level of Knowledge about Diagnosis of Sepsis obtained 51.7% and, finally, the category Level of Knowledge about Treatment of Sepsis. Sepsis with 29.2%. Conclusions: The level of knowledge of students about Surgical Sepsis is poor because there is an underestimation of the severity of sepsis as a potentially fatal condition, which can have a negative impact on patients[AU]

ABSTRACT

Ethnobotany approached through ethnoeducation allows for the preservation of the cultural heritage of indigenous communities. In this way, the ethnobotanical knowledge of primary school students from the Paniquita Indigenous Community was recognized, regarding the cultural knowledge of medicinal plants and their significance in the conservation of the biocultural heritage. This research had a qualitative, ethnographic approach. The sample consisted of ten students who were part of a focus group, ethnobotanical walks, and participatory workshops with drawings since they stimulate students' creative and dynamic thinking and strengthen interculturality. Twenty-one plants were reported, which are used to relieve sore throats, headaches, and stomach aches, as well as to treat diarrhea and fever, to prevent flu, and as a purgative. All the medicinal plants mentioned grow in the community and are either cultivated or wild, which also shows the students' knowledge of the ir territory. These findings reflect the importance of ethno-education and ethnobotany at school and how historical reconstruction processes are generated from these settings, where indigenous ancestral knowledge is made visible.


La etnobotánica abordada desde la etnoeducación permite mantener el legado cultural de los pueblos originarios. De esta manera, se reconoció el conocimiento etnobotáni co de los estudiantes de primaria de la Comunidad Indígena Paniquita, sobre el conocimiento cultural de las plantas medicinales y su importancia para la conservación del patrimonio biocultural. La investigación tuvo un enfoque cualitativo y etnográfico. La muestra estuvo conformada por diez estudiantes que formaron parte de un grupo focal, caminatas etnobotánicas y talleres participativos con dibujos, ya que estimulan el pensamiento creativo y dinámico de los estudiantes y fortalecen la interculturalidad. Se reportaron 21 plantas que se utilizan para aliviar dolores de garganta, cabeza y estómago, así como para tratar la diarrea y la fiebre, para prevenir la gripe y como purgante. Todas las plantas medicinales mencionadas crecen en la comunidad y son cultivadas o silvestres, lo que también demuestra el conocimiento que los estudiantes tienen de su territorio. Estos hallazgos reflejan la importancia de la etnoeducación y la etnobotánica en la escuela y cómo se generan procesos de reconstrucción histórica desde estos escenarios, donde se visibiliza el conocimiento ancestral indígena.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Children with disabilities (CWDs) constitute a substantial segment of the population who encounter abuse, emphasizing the need to comprehend the influence of school-based interventions on this susceptible group. AIM: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify and evaluate the effectiveness of school-based interventions in enhancing child sexual abuse (CSA) knowledge among CWDs. PARTICIPANTS: This meta-analysis incorporated seven published studies, encompassing 387 CWDs. METHODS: Our study synthesizes findings from seven experimental and quasi-experimental studies, adhering to the PRISMA guidelines. The study was registered in PROSPERO. The literature search, conducted between September 25, 2023, and October 2, 2023, employed various databases and keywords relevant to the study's scope. The research question and articles' eligibility were assessed using the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes, and Study type (PICOs). The meta-analysis was conducted using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software. RESULTS: The school-based intervention greatly impacted CWDs' CSA knowledge scores (Hedges's g = 1.026 [95% CI: 0.845; 1.208], z = 11.074, p = 0.000). The findings of this meta-analysis demonstrate that Questionnaire/scale-based knowledge measurement (Hedges's g = 2.586 [95% CI: 0.920; 4.252], z = 3.043, P = 0.002) and Vignette-based knowledge measurement (Hedges's g = 1.065 [95% CI: 0.655; 1.474], z = 5.100, p = 0.000) are effective in assessing CWDs' knowledge of CSA. CONCLUSION: This systematic review and meta-analysis of seven randomized controlled studies and quasi-experimental studies provide robust evidence supporting the effectiveness of school-based interventions in significantly enhancing CSA knowledge among CWDs. IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE: These findings are potentially significant evidence for education professionals, including educators and school health nurses.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine family caregivers' level of knowledge on pressure injury (PI) prevention. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional and descriptive design. Data were collected between February and May 2023. The population of the study consisted of family caregivers providing care to patients who were at risk of developing pressure injuries and who were planned to be discharged from the inpatient wards of the hospital. A total of 105 family caregivers participated in the study. RESULTS: Of all the patients, 61.9 % (n = 65) were female and their average age was 68.96 years (SD = 18.07). While 30.48 % (n = 32) of the patients were bedridden due to Cerebrovascular Accident, 28.57 % (n = 30) were bedridden due to old age, and 28.57 % (n = 30) had PI. Of all the caregivers, 71.43 % (n = 75) were female, and their average age was 47.11 years (SD = 14.85). While 97.14 % (n = 96) of the caregivers had not received any training on PI before, 90.48 % (n = 95) had not provided care to a patient with PI before. Family caregivers scored an average of 22.25 (SD = 6.96) points out of 40 on the Pressure Injury Prevention Knowledge Test (PIPKT). A significant difference was detected between the knowledge test scores and education level and income level (P = 0.006; P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Family caregivers were found to need information about PI prevention. It is recommended to develop content on PI prevention in the guidelines for family caregivers.

BACKGROUND: The proper interpretation of a study's results requires both excellent understanding of good methodological practices and deep knowledge of prior results, aided by the availability of effect sizes. METHODS: This review takes the form of an expository essay exploring the complex and nuanced relationships among statistical significance, clinical importance, and effect sizes. RESULTS: Careful attention to study design and methodology will increase the likelihood of obtaining statistical significance and may enhance the ability of investigators/readers to accurately interpret results. Measures of effect size show how well the variables used in a study account for/explain the variability in the data. Studies reporting strong effects may have greater practical value/utility than studies reporting weak effects. Effect sizes need to be interpreted in context. Verbal summary characterizations of effect sizes (e.g., "weak", "strong") are fundamentally flawed and can lead to inappropriate characterization of results. Common language effect size (CLES) indicators are a relatively new approach to effect sizes that may offer a more accessible interpretation of results that can benefit providers, patients, and the public at large. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to convey research findings in ways that are clear to both the research community and to the public. At a minimum, this requires inclusion of standard effect size data in research reports. Proper selection of measures and careful design of studies are foundational to the interpretation of a study's results. The ability to draw useful conclusions from a study is increased when investigators enhance the methodological quality of their work.

ABSTRACT

The involvement of academic research in drug discovery is consistently growing. However, academic projects seldom advance to clinical trials. Here, we assess the landscape of drug discovery within the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) TransCure launched by the Swiss National Science Foundation to foster basic research and early-stage drug discovery on membrane transporters. This included transporters in central nervous system (CNS) disorders, which represent a huge unmet medical need. While idea championship, sustainable funding, collaborations between disciplines at the interface of academia and industry are important for translational research, Popperian falsifiability, strong intellectual property and a motivated startup team are key elements for innovation. This is exemplified by the NCCR TransCure spin-off company Synendos Therapeutics, a clinical stage biotech company developing the first selective endocannabinoid reuptake inhibitors (SERIs) as novel treatment for neuropsychiatric disorders. We provide a perspective on the challenges related to entering an uncharted druggable space and bridging the often mentioned "valley of death". The high attrition rate of drug discovery projects in the CNS field within academia is often due to the lack of meaningful animal models that can provide pharmacological proof-of-concept for potentially disruptive technologies at the earliest stages, and the absence of solid intellectual property.

Background: The danger of sexual activities among adolescents is worrisome worldwide. This study aimed to delineate total contraception knowledge of university students and the prevalence of contraceptive use, in addition to the association between sex education in school and the students' contraception knowledge. Materials and Methods: A school-based cross-sectional study was carried out. Results: The mean total level of contraceptive knowledge was 16.53 ± 2.38, which ranged from 5 to 18. In response to which method was the most suitable for the youngsters, 36.3% responded pills, 49.2% condoms, 6.3% injection, 0.7% withdrawal, 0.5% periodic abstinence, and 5.9% other. Adjusted to sociodemographic characteristics and other confounders, students with a history of sex education in school tended to have a higher level of contraceptive knowledge than those without [AOR: 1.06; 95% CI: 0.15, 2.64]. Moreover, adjusted to the characteristics of one-night stands, students with a high level of contraceptive knowledge agreed that one-night stands were OK compared with those without the knowledge [AOR: 0.65; 95% CI: 0.16, 1.13]. Conclusion: Although the total contraceptive knowledge was satisfactory, more attention should be paid to male students' education. Modern and long-term effective contraceptive methods had better be included in the training program.

Introduction: We assessed the baseline knowledge and the improvement and retention of knowledge after attending diabetes self-management education (DSME) programs with respect to different socioeconomic status (SES). We also looked into the change in body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, and glycemic parameters after attending the DSME sessions. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective, cohort study carried out via chart review based on data collected from manual or electronic medical records (EMR) and questionnaire responses of 160 adult patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) who attended two DSME sessions with a gap of at least six months. Results: Baseline knowledge on diabetes was uniform (P = 0.06), irrespective of differences in SES, and DSME sessions significantly improved the knowledge in all socioeconomic classes (P value < 0.05 in each SES group). However, SES did have a significant influence on the finally acquired knowledge of diabetes as was evident from the final score after attending two DSME sessions. A significant number of patients (48.1%) from our cohort either improved or retained their knowledge of diabetes over a mean follow-up of 15.5 months. The BMI of our cohort was significantly reduced from baseline to final follow-up (P = 0.016). Conclusion: DSME sessions were effective in improving knowledge and awareness among T2D patients, irrespective of socioeconomic classes in Eastern India. The acquired knowledge from DSME sessions was retained over a long time.

ABSTRACT

Background: The elderly is defined as the person who is beyond middle age and approaching old age (60 or above), also called senior citizens. The number of older adults globally is expected to increase from 420 million in 2000 to 974 million in 2030. In 2017. The objectives of the study were to assess the existing level of knowledge regarding health promotion strategies and to determine the effectiveness of health education program on knowledge regarding health promotion among the elderly in old age home. Materials and Methods: The study employed one-group pretest and posttest preexperimental design without a control group. The sample size of 50 was selected using a non-probability convenient sampling technique. Baseline data were collected by a structured questionnaire, and a structured teaching program was given for 2 weeks, and after 15 days, a posttest was conducted with the same tool. Statistical Analysis: Data collected were analyzed by using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The knowledge score increased significantly from baseline. The mean score of the pretest was 18.38, the mean score of the posttest was 21.78, the mean improvement was 3.40, and the paired value obtained for knowledge was 17.36, which was found significant at 0.05 level (P < 0.05). There was a significant improvement in the knowledge regarding health promotion strategies in the geriatric population. Conclusions: The result of the study concluded that health education program was effective in improving the knowledge regarding health promotion strategies in the geriatric population.

AIM: To determine the relationship between the knowledge and self-efficiency regarding pressure ulcers of nursing students. METHODS: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted with 775 nursing students from three different universities in various regions of Turkey. The "Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Assessment Tool-Updated Version" and "Pressure Ulcer Management Self-Efficiency Scale for Nurses" tool were used to collect data between May and September 2023. The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies checklist was followed to report this study. RESULTS: The mean knowledge score was 7.27 ± 3.09, and the mean self-efficiency on pressure ulcer management score was 35.5 ± 18.3. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between nursing students' knowledge and self-efficiency mean scores regarding pressure ulcers (p < 0.05). A significant difference was also found between the students' academic levels and gender and their knowledge and self-efficiency scores regarding pressure ulcers. CONCLUSION: In this study, where the data covers these three institutions, students' pressure ulcer knowledge and self-efficiency scores were lower compared to all academic years. Accordingly, it was also determined that students with more nursing practice experience showed higher knowledge and self-efficacy scores than students with less nursing practice experience. Additionally, the students' self-efficacy increased along with their knowledge level. Training courses may be suggested to improve students' knowledge and self-efficiency regarding pressure ulcers.

AIM: We aimed to assess the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding airway clearance among nurses and explore the factors affecting the knowledge, attitudes and practices. DESIGN: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study. BACKGROUND: Airway clearance is an important method of eliminating excess secretions. In neuroscience nursing, nurses are important executors of airway management, and their knowledge, attitudes and practices can influence the effectiveness of airway clearance. METHODS: This study was conducted from July to September 2023 in four hospitals in Jiangsu Province, China. A structured questionnaire about airway clearance was designed and used to collect the data. The nurses used this questionnaire to self-rate. The STROBE checklist for cross-sectional studies was followed. RESULTS: The age, work experience, highest educational attainment and technical title of the nurses can significantly influence their knowledge. The age, highest educational attainment and technical title of the nurses can significantly impact their attitudes. Practice scores were significantly influenced by age, work experience, technical title, whether the nurses had received any training on airway clearance techniques, and whether the department developed procedures for implementing the airway clearance technology. Nurses' attitudes were significantly associated with knowledge and practice, and there was no significant correlation between knowledge and practice. CONCLUSION: This study showed that age, work experience, highest educational attainment and training were related to knowledge, attitudes and practices. These findings suggest that nursing managers can conduct airway clearance training according to age group, working experience and education level of the nurses. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patient or public contribution. IMPACT: The findings show that the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices related to airway clearance in neuroscience nursing among nurses were acceptable, which means that nurses can better perform airway management on patients. These findings serve as a significant reference for designing an airway clearance education for nurses and meet the needs of nurses in clinical nursing practice.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To appraise the dietary perception and knowledge of cardiac patients visiting Outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital. Methods: A cross sectional study of 466 patients attending cardiac outdoor clinic at a tertiary care cardiac hospital in Rawalpindi, Pakistan were selected through convenient sampling from January to April 2021. Patients included in the study were above 18 years of age and had a cardiac disease. A structured questionnaire in English and Urdu was drafted with questions related to patient demographics, dietary perception and knowledge. Results: Among 466 patients, 60% (n=280) were males and 40% (n=186) were females whereas 14% (n=66) of the patients were uneducated and 15% (n=68) had completed postgraduate education. In this study 23% (n=106) of the participants used internet to search nutrition related information and 72 % (n=339) of the patients consider their lifestyle to be healthy. Majority (n=261, 56%) of the patients had no idea regarding sodium consumption. 46% (n=215) of the patients had no knowledge regarding the effects of bakery items on cardiac health. Conclusion: Dietary Knowledge plays a predominant role in the management of cardiac disease. The study concluded that cardiac patients had inadequate knowledge regarding dietary intake in cardiac disease and has high prevalence of dietary myths and misconceptions. Strategic plan including nutritional awareness program and intensive counseling sessions should be designed to increase dietary knowledge of cardiac patients.

Introduction Immunisation is one of the key public health instruments to combat childhood morbidity and mortality. However, the lack of mothers' knowledge and motivation to vaccinate their children has affected vaccination programs and vaccination coverage rate in the state of Jharkhand. Therefore, addressing this knowledge gap, our study aims to evaluate the extent of mothers' understanding of the effects and aspects of vaccination for their children. Materials and method This is a cross-sectional study conducted at the paediatric vaccination clinic of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi between October 2022 and September 2023. The sample population included 200 mothers as participants (18 years and above). The survey was done with a self-administered questionnaire of questions about socio-demographic factors, mothers' knowledge, and mothers' practices, and answers were consolidated in the form of a table. Results The majority of participants in this study were below 25 years of age and were literate. The missed vaccination percentage was also significantly higher among illiterates, mothers below 30 years of age, and unemployed ones. Among the respondents, 73.3% of illiterate mothers, 56% of those below 30 years of age, and 64% of unemployed mothers missed their children's vaccination schedule. Among the mothers, 75% did not know the names of vaccine-preventable diseases. Of the respondents, 50% believed intercurrent illnesses like fever and the common cold to be side effects and contraindications of vaccines. Among the mothers, 65% never posed any questions to the paediatrician. Of the mothers, 97% safely kept the vaccination card and 82% relied on government or public health centres for vaccination purposes. Conclusion The majority of our population was in favour of vaccinating their children but there existed a huge lacuna in their knowledge about vaccination. This study concludes that firmer measures have to be exercised to bridge this knowledge gap. Only this can improve the vaccination coverage rate.

ABSTRACT

Background The elderly population continues to grow worldwide, including in Saudi Arabia. Caring for older people with Alzheimer's and dementia disease is very challenging and merits specific skills, knowledge, and attitudes among nurses and nursing students. Consequently, nursing students must be prepared with the appropriate knowledge and attitude to care for patients affected by Alzheimer's in their future professions. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of Alzheimer's disease (AD) among bachelor's nursing students in Saudi Arabia. Methods This study used a descriptive cross-sectional design, and data were collected via an online questionnaire comprising two main instruments: the Alzheimer's Disease Knowledge Scale (ADKS) and the Dementia Attitudes Scale (DAS). A total of 477 undergraduate nursing students participated in the study at four universities in four regions of Saudi Arabia. Result The results indicated that Saudi nursing students exhibited insufficient knowledge regarding individuals with AD, reflected by a mean ADKS score of 13.83 out of 30. Yet, they displayed positive attitudes, as indicated by a mean DAS score of 99.29 out of 140. Nursing students in their third year and those who had family members with AD had a higher significant score regarding their knowledge of AD than nursing students who were in their fourth year or those who did not have family members who had AD. Additionally, nursing students aged 20 to 25 years, as well as nursing students in their fourth year, had more positive attitudes toward working with AD patients. Conclusions In conclusion, this study revealed that although many nursing students have a positive attitude toward working with AD patients, they have insufficient knowledge of AD. Therefore, there is an urgent necessity for enhanced educational initiatives, encompassing both greater depth and improved quality, as well as increased clinical training to address this knowledge gap among nursing students in Saudi Arabia.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to propose a new diagnostic model based on "segmentation + classification" to improve the routine screening of Thyroid nodule ultrasonography by utilizing the key domain knowledge of medical diagnostic tasks. A Multi-scale segmentation network based on a pyramidal pooling structure of multi-parallel void spaces is proposed. First, in the segmentation network, the exact information of the underlying feature space is obtained by an Attention Gate. Second, the inflated convolutional part of Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) is cascaded for multiple downsampling. Finally, a three-branch classification network combined with expert knowledge is designed, drawing on doctors' clinical diagnosis experience, to extract features from the original image of the nodule, the regional image of the nodule, and the edge image of the nodule, respectively, and to improve the classification accuracy of the model by utilizing the Coordinate attention (CA) mechanism and cross-level feature fusion. The Multi-scale segmentation network achieves 94.27%, 93.90% and 88.85% of mean precision (mPA), Dice value (Dice) and mean joint intersection (MIoU), respectively, and the accuracy, specificity and sensitivity of the classification network reaches 86.07%, 81.34% and 90.19%, respectively. Comparison tests show that this method outperforms the U-Net, AGU-Net and DeepLab V3+ classical models as well as the nnU-Net, Swin UNetr and MedFormer models that have emerged in recent years. This algorithm, as an auxiliary diagnostic tool, can help physicians more accurately assess the benign or malignant nature of Thyroid nodules. It can provide objective quantitative indicators, reduce the bias of subjective judgment, and improve the consistency and accuracy of diagnosis. ABSTRACT

Background: Social media has many positive and negative influences on individuals, especially for adolescents related to HIV. However, little is known about how social media impacts HIV-related outcomes among adolescents in boarding schools. Objective: This study aims to investigate the social media use, knowledge, attitudes, and sexual behavior at risk of HIV transmission and their relationship with the demographic characteristics of adolescent students at boarding schools. Methods: This study was school-based and used a cross-sectional design. The questionnaires were used to assess social network site usage, knowledge, attitudes, and risky behavior. Cluster random sampling involved students (n = 214) from three boarding schools in Cirebon City, West Java, Indonesia, in 2022. Chi-square tests and Cramer's V were used to explore correlations between social and demographic factors. Results: A considerable number of adolescent students exhibited high social media addiction (58.4%), with the majority possessing limited knowledge of HIV transmission (54.7%). Additionally, nearly half displayed a negative attitude towards preventing HIV transmission (47.2%), while only a small fraction engaged in risky behavior (2.8%). Bivariate analysis revealed that social media use was moderately associated with the type of social media application (φc = 0.246, p <0.05). Knowledge of HIV transmission exhibited a moderate correlation with age (φc = 0.331, p <0.05), education level (φc = 0.240, p <0.001), and exposure to information (φc = 0.269, p <0.001). Similarly, attitudes toward HIV prevention demonstrated moderate associations with age (φc = 0.341, p = 0.001), education level (φc = 0.317, p <0.001), and exposure to information (φc = 0.266, p <0.001). Furthermore, risky sexual behavior exhibited a strong association with exposure to pornographic content (φc = 0.730, p <0.001). Conclusion: The study found a high prevalence of social media usage among adolescents, coupled with low knowledge about HIV, negative attitudes, and risky behavior. Significant relationships were observed between social media use, knowledge, attitudes, and risky sexual behavior related to HIV transmission and demographic characteristics. This study emphasizes the vital role of nurses and healthcare professionals in implementing targeted educational interventions in boarding schools to address gaps in HIV risk knowledge influenced by social media, ultimately improving strategies for adolescents' sexual health.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the recognition of the importance of physician knowledge and physician-patient communication about the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), few studies have explored this issue. Therefore, this study aims to assess physicians' knowledge and physician-patient communication regarding CAM. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among physicians working at governmental hospitals and primary healthcare centers in Madinah, Saudi Arabia. The data collection tool was a validated English language questionnaire distributed using social media platforms. The questionnaire included sections to assess physician knowledge and communication about CAM. RESULTS: Of the 373 completed questionnaires, around 151 (40.5%) of the respondents stated that they have a poor level of knowledge about CAM, and 272 (72.9%) need to gain additional knowledge to properly counsel patients on CAM. Medical journals were the main source of knowledge about CAM. There were 121 (32.4%) physicians who believed that <20% of their patients use some form of CAM, and 180 (48.3%) believed that <20% of their patients spontaneously reported their CAM use without prompting or direct questioning. Around 180 (48.3%) of physicians believed that they asked <20% of their patients about using CAM. Regarding barriers that limit communication with the patient about CAM, the highest percentage was insufficient knowledge about CAM (137, 36.7%). CONCLUSION: The study showed that a significant number of physicians lack the appropriate knowledge about CAM and most of them agreed to gain additional knowledge to properly counsel their patients. Further research is needed to evaluate physicians' knowledge about CAM using a more objective method.

ABSTRACT

Due to the growing number of scholarly publications, finding relevant articles becomes increasingly difficult. Scholarly knowledge graphs can be used to organize the scholarly knowledge presented within those publications and represent them in machine-readable formats. Natural language processing (NLP) provides scalable methods to automatically extract knowledge from articles and populate scholarly knowledge graphs. However, NLP extraction is generally not sufficiently accurate and, thus, fails to generate high granularity quality data. In this work, we present TinyGenius, a methodology to validate NLP-extracted scholarly knowledge statements using microtasks performed with crowdsourcing. TinyGenius is employed to populate a paper-centric knowledge graph, using five distinct NLP methods. We extend our previous work of the TinyGenius methodology in various ways. Specifically, we discuss the NLP tasks in more detail and include an explanation of the data model. Moreover, we present a user evaluation where participants validate the generated NLP statements. The results indicate that employing microtasks for statement validation is a promising approach despite the varying participant agreement for different microtasks.

BACKGROUND: At the time of the emergence of COVID-19, denialist and anti-vaccine groups have also emerged and are shaking public confidence in vaccination. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using online focus groups. Participants had not received any doses of vaccination against the disease. A total of five focus group sessions were conducted with 28 participants. They were recruited by snowball sampling and by convenience sampling. RESULTS: The two major topics mentioned by the participants were adverse effects and information. The adverse effects described were severe and included sudden death. In the case of information, participants reported: (1) consultation of websites on which scientists posted anti-vaccination content; and (2) distrust. CONCLUSIONS: At a time when anti-vaccine groups pose a major challenge to public health in general, and to COVID-19 vaccination campaigns in particular, this study is a first step towards gaining deeper insight into the factors that lead to COVID-19 vaccine refusal.
