ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although several studies have found the relationship between essential elements and diabetes, the studies about the association of essential elements with diabetes diagnosed according to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in a sex- and age-specific manner were limited. To investigate the linear and nonlinear relationship of five essential elements including iron (Fe), copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), and calcium (Ca) with diabetes, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h postprandial plasma glucose (PPG), and HbA1c and to evaluate the sex- and age-specific heterogeneities in these relationships. METHODS: A total of 8392 community-dwelling adults were recruited to complete a questionnaire and undergo checkups of anthropometric parameters and serum levels of five metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mg, and Ca). The multivariable logistic and linear regression, the restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, and subgroup analysis were applied to find the associations between the essential elements and the prevalence of diabetes as well as FPG, PPG, and HbA1c. RESULTS: In the multivariable logistic regression and multivariable linear regression, serum Cu was positively associated with FPG, PPG, and HbA1c while serum Mg was significantly inversely correlated with FPG, PPG, HbA1c, and diabetes (all P < 0.001). In the RCS analysis, the non-linear relationship of Cu and diabetes (P < 0.001) was found. In the subgroup analysis, stronger positive associations of Cu with diabetes (P for interaction = 0.027) and PPG (P for interaction = 0.002) were found in younger women. CONCLUSIONS: These findings may lead to more appropriate approaches to essential elements supplementation in people with diabetes of different ages and sexes. However, more prospective cohort and experimental studies are needed to probe the possible mechanism of sex- and age-specific associations between serum essential elements and diabetes.

ABSTRACT

Male and female birds have different roles in reproduction and, thereby in their reproductive investment, which in turn may increase negative effects of poorer breeding conditions caused by e.g., climate change or ecosystem regime shifts. By using a 33-year time series of resightings of Atlantic puffins Fratercula arctica individually colour-ringed as breeders in previous years, we showed that the difference in colony attendance of male and female birds depended on the environmental conditions for raising young, proxied by the average duration of the chick period and size of the herring Clupea harengus fed to the chicks in the colony each year. The longer the chick period, the more was the sex ratio of adults sitting visibly in the colony biased in favour of males. An increase in herring size, indicating better feeding conditions for raising chicks, led to more observations of both sexes. Additionally, we found that birds were observed less with age and females more so than males. We discuss the results in relation to general life-history theory on sexual differences in trade-offs between individual investment in breeding and own survival. Our results suggest that females are increasingly more willing than males to invest in provisioning for the chick the more and longer the chick needs such care.

Of particular interest, age-specific heterogeneity in genetic susceptibility may exhibit opposite directions depending on the presence or absence of prediabetes.

ABSTRACT

Anatomical models have key applications in radiotherapy, notably to help understand the relationship between radiation dose and risk of developing side effects. This review analyses whether age-specific computational phantoms, developed from healthy subjects and paediatric cancer patient data, are adequate to model a paediatric population. The phantoms used in the study were International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), 4D extended cardiac torso (XCAT) and Radiotherapy Paediatric Atlas (RT-PAL), which were also compared to literature data. Organ volume data for 19 organs was collected for all phantoms and literature. ICRP was treated as the reference for comparison, and percentage difference (P.D) for the other phantoms were calculated relative to ICRP. Overall comparisons were made for each age category (1, 5, 10, 15) and each organ. Statistical analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel (version 16.59). The smallest P.D to ICRP was for Literature (-17.4%), closely followed by XCAT (26.6%). The largest was for RT-PAL (88.1%). The rectum had the largest average P.D (1,049.2%) and the large bowel had the smallest (2.0%). The P.D was 122.6% at age 1 but this decreased to 43.5% by age 15. Linear regression analysis showed a correlation between organ volume and age to be the strongest for ICRP (R2 = 0.943) and weakest for XCAT (R2 = 0.676). The phantoms are similar enough to ICRP for potential use in modelling paediatric populations. ICRP and XCAT could be used to model a healthy population, whereas RT-PAL could be used for a population undergoing/after radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is rising in Japan with its aging population, but there is a lack of epidemiological data on sex differences in CVD, including acute coronary syndrome (ACS), acute heart failure (AHF), and acute aortic disease.Methods and Results: This retrospective study analyzed data from 1,349,017 patients (January 2012-December 2020) using the Japanese Registry Of All Cardiac and Vascular Diseases database. ACS patients were youngest on average (70.5±12.9 years) and had the lowest female proportion (28.9%). AHF patients had the oldest mean age (79.7±12.0 years) and the highest proportion of females (48.0%). Acute aortic disease had the highest in-hospital mortality (26.1%), followed by AHF (11.5%) and ACS (8.9%). Sex-based mortality differences were notable in acute aortic disease, with higher male mortality in Stanford Type A acute aortic dissection (AAD) with surgery (males: 14.2% vs. females: 10.4%, P<0.001) and similar rates in Type B AAD (males: 6.2% vs. females: 7.9%, P=0.52). Aging was a universal risk factor for in-hospital mortality. Female sex was a risk factor for ACS and acute aortic disease but not for AHF or Types A and B AAD. CONCLUSIONS: Sex-based disparities in the CVD-related hospitalization and mortality within the Japanese national population have been highlighted for the first time, indicating the importance of sex-specific strategies in the management and understanding of these conditions.

ABSTRACT

The dispersal strategies of a species can affect its invasion success. Investigations into the dispersal strategies of invasive species in relation to different factors help improve our understanding of invasion mechanisms and provide knowledge for population management and invasion evaluation. Tetranychus ludeni Zacher (Acari: Tetranychidae) is an invasive species which is native to Europe but is now cosmopolitan. Here, we examined the effects of age and density on dispersal in mated females. Our results show that older females that are capable of producing more eggs within 24 h were more likely to disperse and moved longer distances than younger ones with fewer eggs. Older females spread most of their eggs out of their natal habitats and over longer distances, which reduced competition and increased offspring fitness. Females exhibited significantly increased dispersal probability and distances with an increase in population density to avoid crowding. The synchronization of dispersal and reproduction, along with the positive density-dependent dispersal strategy, may facilitate the habitat colonization and invasion speed of T. ludeni.

Background: Age is a known prognostic factor for various cancers. However, few studies explored the association between age and prognosis of esophageal cancer (EC) comprehensively, especially from a nonlinear perspective. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Objectives: Our study aims to explore the possible nonlinear associations between age and prognosis in EC patients receiving curative surgery and radiotherapy, respectively. Methods: Cox regression models with restricted cubic splines were used to model the possible nonlinear relationship between age and prognosis in surgical and radiotherapy groups, respectively. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was used to validate the age-prognosis patterns found in Jing-Jin-Ji Esophageal and Esophagogastric Cancer Radiotherapy Oncology Group database. Age-prognosis patterns were further validated by survival comparisons between different age subgroups and in subsequent sensitivity and subgroup analyses. Primary endpoint is overall survival. Secondary endpoints are cancer-specific survival and progression-free survival. Results: A total of 56,457 patients from two large cancer databases were included. Patients receiving surgery and radiotherapy showed two distinct nonlinear age-prognosis patterns. Age showed a U-/J-shaped association with prognosis in the radiotherapy group, with a nadir at approximately 65- to 70-years-old. As for surgical cohort, relative risk for all-cause mortality and cancer-specific mortality increased with age with p for nonlinearity <0.05. The above age-prognosis relationships were validated by sensitivity, subgroup, and comparative survival analyses. Youngest and middle-aged patients showed better survival results compared to that of other age subgroups in surgical and radiotherapy cohorts, respectively [Radiotherapy, youngest/middle: hazard ratio (HR) = 1.06, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-1.10, p = 0.001; Radiotherapy, oldest/middle: HR = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.18-1.24, p < 0.001; Surgical, middle/youngest: HR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.14-1.25, p < 0.001; surgical, oldest/youngest: HR = 1.85, 95% CI: 1.75-1.97, p < 0.001]. Conclusion: Patients receiving surgery and radiotherapy showed two distinct age-prognosis patterns. Younger and middle-aged patients were associated with better survival in surgical and radiotherapy groups, respectively. Additional studies are warranted to explore the underlying mechanisms and clinical implications of this phenomenon.

Background: Rising trends in early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) burden have been observed, but the distribution and temporal patterns of early-onset CRC attributable to dietary risks remain unclear. Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the burden of early-onset CRC attributable to dietary risk factors globally, regionally, and nationally, by age and sex, from 1990 to 2019. Methods: The absolute number and age-specific rates (ASR) of diet-related early-onset CRC burden, as well as summary exposure value (SEV) of attributable dietary risk factors, were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019. The temporal changes in the burden between 1990 and 2019 were analyzed by calculating the percentage change in the absolute number of burden and the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) in ASR of burden. The annualized rates of change (ARC) were calculated to evaluate the variation trend of SEV. Results: In 2019, diet-related early-onset CRC caused 30,096 (95% UI: 23,148 to 36,091) death cases and 1,465,755 (95% UI: 1,126,489 to 1,761,661) DALYs worldwide, accounting for 34.8% deaths and 34.4% DALYs of overall early-onset CRC, respectively. Moreover, a diet low in milk (responsible for 16.5% [95% UI: 11.1 to 21.9%] of DALYs in 2019), low in whole grains (15.2% [95% UI: 5.9 to 19.9%]), low in calcium (14.3% [95% UI: 10.7 to 18.9%]), high in red meat (5.3% [95% UI: 1.7 to 9.5%]), high in processed meat (2.5% [95% UI: 0.9 to 4.0%]), and low in fiber (2.3% [95% UI: 0.9 to 4.2%]) were early-onset CRC attributable dietary risk factors. The age-specific DALYs rate of early-onset CRC attributable to each dietary risk factor generally showed an increasing trend globally between 1990 and 2019, except for low intake of fiber (EAPC = -0.57, 95% CI: -0.76 to -0.38). In addition, from 1990 to 2019, males have a higher burden than females and this gap may continue to widen due to the increasing difference between the sexes in most dietary risk factors. Furthermore, dietary risks-attributable early-onset CRC burden has shifted from regions with high socio-demographic index (SDI) to high-middle and middle SDI quintiles with uncontrolled dietary risks. Conclusion: Early-onset CRC remains a concerning issue globally, and effective prevention and modification of dietary risk factors holds great promise to reduce early-onset CRC-related burden. Prioritizing diet improvement for males is critical and urgent for CRC control efforts, particularly for those living in developing countries with ongoing dietary pattern transition.

BACKGROUND: Female sexual dysfunction is common in the general population, with age emerging as a significant determinant of sexual activity and functioning. AIM: To establish age-specific reference scores for the Pelvic Organ Prolapse/Urinary Incontinence Sexual Questionnaire (PISQ-12) in the general Dutch female population. METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study was conducted in the Netherlands. The study population comprised 2518 Dutch-speaking women aged ≥18 years, representing a cross section of the general Dutch population. The PISQ-12 was used to assess sexual functioning in heterosexual women. The Groningen Defecation and Fecal Continence questionnaire was utilized to demonstrate demographic factors. OUTCOMES: We established age-specific reference scores for the PISQ-12 in the general Dutch population. RESULTS: Of the 2518 women, 1592 (63.2%) were sexually active and 926 (36.8%) were not. Further analysis focused on the sexually active group: we found a decrease in mean total PISQ scores, ranging from 38.34 among 18- to 34-year-olds to 36.98 among ≥65-year-olds. Older women scored lower in the behavior domain, specifically pertaining to sexual desire (P < .001) and sexual excitement (P < .001). They also had lower scores in the partner-related domain regarding partner problems of erection (P < .001) and orgasm perception (P < .001). With increasing age, negative emotional reaction scores were higher (P < .001). In the physical domain, we observed significantly different scores for pain during sexual intercourse (P < .001) and restrictions in sexual activity due to fear of urinary leakage (P < .001), with the lowest scores in the youngest group. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: These age-specific references scores of the PISQ-12 provide an overview of sexual functioning of a general population, which enables caregivers to assess and interpret patients' individual scores more accurately. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS: We included only sexually active women in our subanalyses, potentially introducing selection bias for older women with better physical conditions. The study's strength lies in its extensive sample size, representing a cross section of the general Dutch population. Furthermore, the self-administered questionnaire approach helped minimize embarrassment and obtain realistic responses. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated age-specific PISQ-12 reference scores and highlighted associations between aging and diminishing scores of sexual desire, sexual excitement, erection problems, and orgasm perception, while women aged 18 to 34 years reported the lowest scores for pain during intercourse and limited sexual activity due to fear of urinary leakage.

Juvenile survival is critical to population persistence and evolutionary change. However, the survival of juvenile plants from emergence to reproductive maturity is rarely quantified. This is especially true for long-lived perennials with extended pre-reproductive periods. Furthermore, studies rarely have the replication necessary to account for variation among populations and cohorts. We estimated juvenile survival and its relationship to population size, density of conspecifics, distance to the maternal plant, age, year, and cohort for Echinacea angustifolia, a long-lived herbaceous perennial. In 14 remnant prairie populations over seven sampling years, 2007-2013, we identified 886 seedlings. We then monitored these individuals annually until 2021 (8-15 years). Overall, juvenile mortality was very high; for almost all cohorts fewer than 10% of seedlings survived to age 8 or to year 2021. Only two of the seedlings reached reproductive maturity within the study period. Juvenile survival increased with distance from the maternal plant and varied more among the study years than it did by age or cohort. Juvenile survival did not vary with population size or local density of conspecific neighbors. Our results suggest that low juvenile survival could contribute to projected population declines.

PURPOSE: Increasing the perceived need for CRC screening can facilitate undertaking CRC screening. This study aims to identify factors associated with the need for CRC screening in rural populations. DESIGN: A cross-sectional online survey. SETTING: The survey was conducted in June - September 2022 in the rural areas of Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, US. SUBJECTS: The subjects of this study were 250 adults (completion rate: 65%) aged 45-75 residing in rural Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. MEASURES: Perceived need for CRC screening, internet usage for health purposes, demographics, and intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, and environmental characteristics. RESULTS: Perceived need for CRC screening were negatively associated with patient-provider miscommunication (ß = -.23, P < .001) and perceived discrimination (ß = -.21, P < .001), cancer fatalism (ß = -.16, P < .05), individualism (ß = -.15, P < .05), and dependence on community (ß = -.11, P < .05), but positively with compliance with social norms (ß = .16, P < .05), trust in health care providers (ß = .16, P < .05), knowledge about colorectal cancer (ß = .12, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed potential individual and situational characteristics that might help increase colorectal cancer screening. Future efforts might consider addressing discrimination in health care settings, improving patient-provider communication, and tailoring messaging to reflect the rural culture.

PURPOSE: To examine the relative importance of social cognitive predictors (ie, performance accomplishment, vicarious learning, verbal persuasion, affective state) on health promotion self-efficacy among older adults during COVID-19. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: Data collected online from participants in British Columbia (BC), Canada. SUBJECTS: Seventy-five adults (n = 75) aged ≥65 years. MEASURES: Health promotion self-efficacy was measured using the Self-Rated Abilities for Health Practices Scale. Performance accomplishment was assessed using the health directed behavior subscale of the Health Education Impact Questionnaire; vicarious learning was measured using the positive social interaction subscale of the Medical Outcomes Survey - Social Support Scale (MOS-SSS); verbal persuasion was assessed using the informational support subscale from the MOS-SSS; and affective state was assessed using the depression subscale from the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). ANALYSIS: Multiple linear regression was used to investigate the relative importance of each social cognitive predictor on self-efficacy, after controlling for age. RESULTS: Our analyses revealed statistically significant associations between self-efficacy and performance accomplishment (health-directed behavior; ß = .20), verbal persuasion (informational support; ß = .41), and affective state (depressive symptoms; ß = -.44) at P < .05. Vicarious learning (ß = -.15) did not significantly predict self-efficacy. The model was statistically significant (P < .001) explaining 43% of the self-efficacy variance. CONCLUSION: Performance accomplishment experiences, verbal persuasion strategies, and affective states may be the target of interventions to modify health promotion self-efficacy among older adults, in environments that require physical and social distancing.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that the prevalence of all-variants Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) both increase with age, even before the age of 65. However, it is not known whether their different clinical presentations all increase in prevalence with age in the same way. METHODS: We studied the prevalence of the different clinical presentations of young-onset AD and FTD by 5-year age groups in a population-based study identifying all dementia patients with a diagnosis of AD and FTD and symptoms onset before age 65 in the Modena province, Italy. By using regression models of cumulative occurrences, we also estimated age-specific prevalence and compared the growth curves of the clinical presentations. RESULTS: The prevalence of all-variants AD increased with age, from 18/1,000,000 in the 40-44 age group to 1411/1,000,000 in the 60-64 age group. The prevalence of all-variants FTD also increased with age, from 18/1,000,000 to 866/1,000,000. An estimation of age-specific prevalence functions of each clinical presentation showed that atypical non-amnestic AD and aphasic FTD grew the most in early ages, followed by the behavioural variant of FTD (bvFTD). Then, around the age of 60, amnestic AD took over and its age-specific prevalence continued to increase disproportionally compared to all the other clinical variants of AD and FTD, which, instead, started to decrease in prevalence. CONCLUSIONS: Amnestic AD is the clinical presentation that increases the most with advancing age, followed by bvFTD, suggesting that there is a differential vulnerability to the effect of ageing within the same neurodegenerative disease.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Early-onset prostate cancer (EOPC, ≤ 55 years) has a unique clinical entity harboring high genetic risk, but the majority of EOPC patients still substantial opportunity to be early-detected thus suffering an unfavorable prognosis. A refined understanding of age-based polygenic risk score (PRS) for prostate cancer (PCa) would be essential for personalized risk stratification. METHODS: We included 167,517 male participants [4882 cases including 205 EOPC and 4677 late-onset PCa (LOPC)] from UK Biobank. A General-, an EOPC- and an LOPC-PRS were derived from age-specific genome-wide association studies. Weighted Cox proportional hazard models were applied to estimate the risk of PCa associated with PRSs. The discriminatory capability of PRSs were validated using time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves with additional 4238 males from PLCO and TCGA. Phenome-wide association studies underlying Mendelian Randomization were conducted to discover EOPC linking phenotypes. RESULTS: The 269-PRS calculated via well-established risk variants was more strongly associated with risk of EOPC [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.35, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.99-2.78] than LOPC (HR = 1.95, 95% CI 1.89-2.01; I2 = 79%). EOPC-PRS was dramatically related to EOPC risk (HR = 4.70, 95% CI 3.98-5.54) but not to LOPC (HR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.96-1.01), while LOPC-PRS had similar risk estimates for EOPC and LOPC (I2 = 0%). Particularly, EOPC-PRS performed optimal discriminatory capability for EOPC (area under the ROC = 0.613). Among the phenomic factors to PCa deposited in the platform of ProAP (Prostate cancer Age-based PheWAS; https://mulongdu.shinyapps.io/proap ), EOPC was preferentially associated with PCa family history while LOPC was prone to environmental and lifestyles exposures. CONCLUSIONS: This study comprehensively profiled the distinct genetic and phenotypic architecture of EOPC. The EOPC-PRS may optimize risk estimate of PCa in young males, particularly those without family history, thus providing guidance for precision population stratification.

INTRODUCTION: Concerns regarding the adverse consequences of radiation have increased due to the expanded application of computed tomography (CT) in medical practice. Certain studies have indicated that the radiation dosage depends on the anatomical region, the imaging technique employed and patient-specific variables. The aim of this study is to present fitting models for the estimation of age-specific dose estimates (ASDE), in the same direction of size-specific dose estimates, and effective doses based on patient age, gender and the type of CT examination used in paediatric head, chest and abdomen-pelvis imaging. METHODS: A total of 583 paediatric patients were included in the study. Radiometric data were gathered from DICOM files. The patients were categorised into five distinct groups (under 15 years of age), and the effective dose, organ dose and ASDE were computed for the CT examinations involving the head, chest and abdomen-pelvis. Finally, the best fitting models were presented for estimation of ASDE and effective doses based on patient age, gender and the type of examination. RESULTS: The ASDE in head, chest, and abdomen-pelvis CT examinations increases with increasing age. As age increases, the effective dose in head and abdomen-pelvis CT scans decreased. However, for chest scans, the effective dose initially showed a decreasing trend until the first year of life; after that, it increases in correlation with age. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the presented fitting model for the ASDE, these CT scan quantities depend on factors such as patient age and the type of CT examination. For the effective dose, the gender was also included in the fitting model. By utilising the information about the scan type, region and age, it becomes feasible to estimate the ASDE and effective dose using the models provided in this study.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Quantifying the transmissibility over time, particularly by region and age, using parameters such as serial interval and time-varying reproduction number, helps in formulating targeted interventions. Moreover, considering the impact of geographical factors on transmission provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of control measures. Methods: Drawing on a comprehensive dataset of COVID-19 cases in South Korea, we analyzed transmission dynamics with a focus on age and regional variations. The dataset, compiled through the efforts of dedicated epidemiologists, includes information on symptom onset dates, enabling detailed investigations. The pandemic was divided into distinct phases, aligning with changes in policies, emergence of variants, and vaccination efforts. We analyzed various interventions such as social distancing, vaccination rates, school closures, and population density. Key parameters like serial interval, heatmaps, and time-varying reproduction numbers were used to quantify age and region-specific transmission trends. Results: Analysis of transmission pairs within age groups highlighted the significant impact of school closure policies on the spread among individuals aged 0-19. This analysis also shed light on transmission dynamics within familial and educational settings. Changes in confirmed cases over time revealed a decrease in spread among individuals aged 65 and older, attributed to higher vaccination rates. Conversely, densely populated metropolitan areas experienced an increase in confirmed cases. Examination of time-varying reproduction numbers by region uncovered heterogeneity in transmission patterns, with regions implementing strict social distancing measures showing both increased confirmed cases and delayed spread, indicating the effectiveness of these policies. Discussion: Our findings underscore the importance of evaluating and tailoring epidemic control policies based on key COVID-19 parameters. The analysis of social distancing measures, school closures, and vaccine impact provides valuable insights into controlling transmission. By quantifying the impact of these interventions on different age groups and regions, we contribute to the ongoing efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic effectively.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: Several challenges still exist to adopt the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) as a marker of polycystic ovary morphology (PCOM), as included in the recently updated international guideline. Although different evaluations of age- and assay-specific reference ranges have been published in the last years, these studies have mainly been conducted in normo-ovulatory or infertile women. OBJECTIVE: To develop an age-specific percentile distribution of AMH in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) measured by three different assays. DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional study. PATIENTS: 2,725 women aged 20 to 40 years with PCOS diagnosis were included. INTERVENTION (S): Serum AMH measurement by the Gen II (Beckman Coulter), the picoAMH (Ansh Labs), and the Elecsys (Roche) assays. MAIN OUTCOME MEAUSRE (S): Age-specific centile curves for all the assays and correlations between AMH, clinical, hormonal, and ultrasound characteristics. RESULTS: Age-related nomograms for the 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 95th percentiles of AMH were calculated using the LMS method for all the assays. AMH levels were significantly different between PCOS phenotypes. AMH levels were positive correlated to luteinizing hormone (LH), LH/follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) ratio, testosterone, androstenedione, free androgen index, mean follicular number, and mean ovarian volume. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge this is the first study reporting age specific percentile nomograms of serum AMH levels measured by the Gen II, the picoAMH and the Elecsys assays in a large population of PCOS women. These findings may help to interpret AMH levels in PCOS patients and facilitate the use of AMH as a diagnostic tool across age ranges.

ABSTRACT

The article considers the most important demographic indicator of natural movement of population - the natality. The dynamics of age-specific fertility of female population residing industrial highly urbanized areas of the region is demonstrated. The increase of total fertility was established. The dynamics of common and standardized coefficients of age-specific fertility of female population revealed process of aging (motherhood). However, the cleared, accurate net-coefficient of population reproduction indicates that positive dynamics of general, age-specific fertility ensures only simple character of population reproduction in city of Angarsk. The population of cities of Irkutsk and Shelekhov remains in narrowed character of population reproduction. The special coefficients of fertility make it possible to obtain accurate age-specific qualitative characteristic of fertility of female population and to forecast demographic situation in the region.

ABSTRACT

During its first 2 years, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic manifested as multiple waves shaped by complex interactions between variants of concern, non-pharmaceutical interventions, and the immunological landscape of the population. Understanding how the age-specific epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 has evolved throughout the pandemic is crucial for informing policy decisions. In this article, we aimed to develop an inference-based modeling approach to reconstruct the burden of true infections and hospital admissions in children, adolescents, and adults over the seven waves of four variants (wild-type, Alpha, Delta, and Omicron BA.1) during the first 2 years of the pandemic, using the Netherlands as the motivating example. We find that reported cases are a considerable underestimate and a generally poor predictor of true infection burden, especially because case reporting differs by age. The contribution of children and adolescents to total infection and hospitalization burden increased with successive variants and was largest during the Omicron BA.1 period. However, the ratio of hospitalizations to infections decreased with each subsequent variant in all age categories. Before the Delta period, almost all infections were primary infections occurring in naive individuals. During the Delta and Omicron BA.1 periods, primary infections were common in children but relatively rare in adults who experienced either reinfections or breakthrough infections. Our approach can be used to understand age-specific epidemiology through successive waves in other countries where random community surveys uncovering true SARS-CoV-2 dynamics are absent but basic surveillance and statistics data are available.

BACKGROUND: Power tools are essential for productivity but carry significant injury risks. Addressing power tool injuries across diverse age groups is vital, as existing research predominantly focuses on specific occupational or non-occupational groups, leaving a gap in understanding various age cohorts within the diverse American population. This study aims to comprehend power tool injury epidemiology, raising awareness about the importance of targeted safety measures for enhancing public health. METHODS: Using a ten-year retrospective approach, this study analyzed National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) data from US hospital emergency departments (2013-2022). Demographic and temporal trends were examined, and associations between injury occurrence and categorical variables, including injured body parts, gender, and race, were explored. RESULTS: In 2013, power tool injuries were highest in the "51-60″ age group (23.70 %), followed by "41-50″ (17.31 %) and "61-70″ (19.38 %). Injury rates varied across age groups over the years. Notably, the "41-50″ age group showed a significant decrease in injuries over time (χ² = 17.12, p < .05), indicating a notable temporal trend. Hand injuries were predominant (39.08 %), followed by finger (19.19 %), lower arm (11.25 %), upper arm (8.79 %), and face (4.04 %). Lacerations constituted the most frequent injury type (60.89 %), alongside fractures, amputations, foreign body insertions, and contusions/abrasions. Significant associations emerged between injury occurrence and gender (χ² = 6.19, p < .001), as well as race (χ² = 7.42, p < .001). Males accounted for the majority of injuries (95.97 %), while white individuals constituted the largest proportion (91.84 %). Females and domestic settings exhibited increasing proportions of power tool injuries. CONCLUSIONS: The higher incidence among middle-aged individuals in domestic settings, coupled with evolving gender dynamics, underscores the need for targeted safety measures. Our findings contribute crucial novel insights, emphasizing tailored preventive strategies to enhance safety outcomes in the multifaceted landscape of power tool use.
