ABSTRACT

Transport and mining machinery cabins are still not well adapted to their users, while checklists for their evaluation are not common in the literature. This article proposes a new checklist for ergonomic evaluation and tests its universality empirically with a sample of 96 transport and mining machine operators. The objective of the article is two-fold. First, the article checks whether there are anthropometric dimension differences between different machines' operators. Second, statistical significance testing regarding items in the proposed checklist is performed to check its universality. Significant differences have not been found between anthropometric dimensions of transport and mining machine operators. Group comparisons prove that mining machines have better ergonomics characteristics of the chair, manual controls and vision field. The recommendation for crane designers is to examine mining machines solutions and analyze the possibility of adapting these solutions, due to anthropometric fit. Wide usage of the checklist is recommended.

ABSTRACT

The school age period is characterized by significant physical and intellectual growth, necessitating the monitoring of macronutrient intake and its impact on weight and height. The objective of this study is to investigate the association between the quality and quantity of protein and fat consumption with anthropometric indices in primary school girls in Kerman. This cross-sectional analysis was conducted on primary school girls aged 6-12 (n 330) from ten schools in Kerman, Iran. A validated and reliable dish-based 185-item food frequency questionnaire was used. We calculated the amount of proteins and fats as the percentage of daily calories and grams per day. Plant-based and animal-based proteins were used to assess the protein quality. To assess the fat quality, we considered trans fatty acids (TFA), cholesterol, vegetable oils, solid vegetable oils, animal oils, omega-6 Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), omega-3 PUFA, and (PUFAs + Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs))/Saturated fatty acids (SFAs), PUFAs/SFA, and (MUFA + PUFA)/(SFA + TFA). There was a significant positive association between height-for-age z-score (HAZ) and plant protein (p < 0.001) and vegetable oils (p = 0.038) after adjustment. In higher tertiles of animal protein, weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) (p = 0.024) were significantly higher. A significant positive association was observed between omega-3 PUFA and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) (p = 0.039) and BMI-for-age z-score (BAZ) (p = 0.016). Our study emphasizes the importance of monitoring protein and fat intake in primary school girls for optimal growth. Positive associations were found between plant-based protein, vegetable oils and HAZ, as well as animal protein and WAZ, highlighting the impact of protein quality on growth indicators.

ABSTRACT

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is closely associated with adverse cardiometabolic outcomes. The objective of this study was to identify practical methods that could enable the effective identification of MetS based on anthropometric indices. The basis of our study involved retrospective database obtained from routine medical prophylactic examinations. This was a cross-sectional study on the health status of male workers employed in hazardous working conditions at industrial enterprises in the Ural region conducted in 2019. A total of 347 male workers employed under hazardous working conditions were investigated. The presence of MetS was established by a healthcare professional in accordance with the guidelines of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Simple linear regression was used to evaluate the associations between anthropometric indices and MetS incidence. Logistic regression was used to determine the odds ratios of MetS in relation to increases in anthropometric indices. ROC curves were calculated to compare the ability of each anthropometric index to predict MetS and to determine the diagnostic thresholds of the indicators considered. According to the IDF criteria, 36.3% of the workers had MetS. A direct relationship was found between the individual components of MetS and the anthropometric indices studied. The highest OR was shown by the Body Roundness Index (BRI) of 2.235 (95% CI 1.796-2.781). For different age quartiles, the optimal cut-off values for predicting MetS were as follows: BRI, 4.1-4.4 r.u.; body shape index (ABSI), 0.080-0.083 m11/6 kg-2/3; and lipid accumulation product (LAP), 49.7-70.5 cm mmol/l. The most significant associations with MetS were observed where the values were greater than these cut-off points (Se = 97.4%). The results of this study demonstrated the rapid use of new anthropometric indicators, which have shown good predictive ability and are quite easy to use.

ABSTRACT

Introduction The mandible constitutes one of the skull's largest and strongest bones. Growth spurts can influence it, and it has a variety of dimorphic traits that can be used to identify sex. In addition to observing, comparing, and evaluating the potential for mandibular ramus flexure and bigonial breadth to discriminate between sexes using digital orthopantomograms (OPG), a retrospective study was conducted to examine the validity of this method for sex estimation in the Indian population. Aim and objective This study aims to quantify sexual dimorphism by analyzing two mandibular parameters, the ramus flexure and the bigonial width, using orthopantomography (OPG). The objective is to determine the accuracy of sex determination using the ramus flexure and bigonial width. Materials and methods A total of 500 OPG images (250 males and 250 females) were analyzed using the Planmeca software (Helsinki, Finland). The ramus flexure was measured as the angle formed between the tangent to the inferior border of the mandible and the tangent to the posterior border of the ramus. The bigonial width was measured as the distance between the left and right gonion points. A statistical analysis was performed to assess sexual dimorphism and determine the accuracy of sex determination using these parameters. The study employed descriptive statistics, such as means and standard deviations, and an independent t-test to determine the significance of the characteristics in relation to males and females. Results The mean bigonial width for females was 193.3068 mm (SD = 13.51669 mm) and for males was 217.6308 mm (SD = 10.87453 mm), with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.000). The 95% confidence interval for the difference in the bigonial width between males and females was between -49.97173 mm and -43.93787 mm. For the ramus flexure, the mean was 0.0000 for both males and females (SD = 0.00000), with a significant difference between males and females (p = 0.003). The 95% confidence interval for the difference in the ramus flexure between males and females was between -0.59543 and -0.12457. Conclusion The results indicated significant sexual dimorphism in both the ramus flexure and bigonial width. This study demonstrated that the ramus flexure and bigonial width, measured using orthopantomography (OPG), exhibited significant sexual dimorphism. The analysis of these mandibular parameters provided valuable information for sex determination in forensic and anthropological contexts.

ABSTRACT

This research on human body dimensions offers data for creating comfortable and efficient workplaces. Focusing on Slovak university students (2003-2023) as a representation of the adult population, the study measured 25 key anthropometric dimensions. 11355 respondents (5219 women and 6136 men) were selected for the analysis. This data, analyzed through descriptive statistics, empowers designers to tailor work environments and their elements to individual needs, minimizing worker fatigue and maximizing productivity. The findings are applicable across various design fields: Informing dimensions and functionalities of tools, workspaces, and controls in industrial design and guiding short- and long-term product development in consumer product design. By analyzing future workforce trends through university students, this research helps ensure workplace designs remain relevant and ergonomically sound.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: An increasing amount of evidence suggests that migraine is a response to cerebral energy deficiencies or oxidative stress levels that exceed antioxidant capacity. Current pharmacological options are inadequate in treating patients with chronic migraine, and a growing interest focuses on nutritional approaches as non-pharmacological treatments. The ketogenic diet, mimicking fasting that leads to an elevation of ketone bodies, is a therapeutic intervention targeting cerebral metabolism that has recently shown great promise in the prevention of migraines. Moreover, Mediterranean elements like vegetables, nuts, herbs, spices, and olive oil that are sources of anti-inflammatory elements (omega-3 fatty acids, polyphenols, vitamins, essential minerals, and probiotics) may create a positive brain environment by reducing imbalance in the gut microbiome. METHODS: On the basis of these indications, a combined Mediterranean-ketogenic diet was administered to chronic migraine patients for 4 (T1) and 8 weeks (T2), and anthropometric estimations were collected at T1 and T2 while biochemical parameters at only T2. RESULTS: A significant reduction (p < 0.01) in migraine frequency and intensity was detected as early as 4 weeks of dietary intervention, which was associated with a reduced fat mass (p < 0.001) as well as Homa index (p < 0.05) and insulin levels (p < 0.01) after 8 weeks. CONCLUSION: Overall, Mediterranean-ketogenic diet may be considered an effective non-pharmacological intervention for migraine, with positive outcomes on body composition.

Objective: Facial anthropometric data vary significantly within the Indian population due to the racial, ethnic and geographic diversity. The anthropometric data of a given ethnic community may not match the other due to diverse ethnic variations, and hence, this study is intended to review the facial anthropometric data pertaining to the diverse Indian populace through a systematic literature survey. Materials and Method: An electronic search done on Medline, Embase and Central databases was utilized to conduct a systematic review of literature. The available data were analyzed based on the various esthetic subunits of the face. The following inclusion criteria were considered: (1) studies depicting the anthropometric data of any ethnic group identified as belonging to India, (2) studies originating from Indian subcontinent, (3) studies which included data of male and female subjects separately and (4) articles in English language only. The following exclusion criteria were considered: (1) atudies conducted on participants with severe malocclusion, developmental craniofacial anomalies, post-traumatic facial deformities or with a history of previous craniofacial or cosmetic surgery, (2) studies which did not specify the anthropometric landmarks used to obtain the measurements, (3) studies in which the statistical analysis was not provided, or if data were grouped across genders and (4) editorials, commentaries, case reports, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and articles not available in English language. Results: Twenty-one articles met the inclusion criteria. Majority of the Indians, particularly men, seem to have a mesoproscopic facial phenotype. The vertical and horizontal facial dimensions of the Indian male are comparably larger than the Indian female. There is sexual dimorphism among the Indian population with regard to the upper and lower thirds of the face, with little or no gender difference as regards the middle third of the face. It was observed that the nasal dimensions of the Indian race were not compatible with that of the occidental, oriental or the western race. The overall facial structure and the upper half of the face were critical in determining facial attractiveness in Indian males while the lower half of the face and the mandibular contour were critical in determining facial attractiveness in females. Conclusion: It is observed that there is a paucity of facial anthropometric data for the Indian population considering the ethnic, racial and geographic diversity. Since the prevalence of craniofacial anomalies and dentofacial deformities in India is high and thus the scope for corrective surgery, it is important to compile baseline facial anthropometric data based on the ethnic diversity of the Indian population.

INTRODUCTION: Malaysia faces the threat of a double burden of malnutrition where undernutrition and overweight (including obesity) coexist in the same population. This study aimed to determine the anthropometric assessment among children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 years and its association with socio-demographic factors. METHODS: Data were extracted from the National Health and Morbidity Survey conducted in 2019. This cross-sectional survey applied a two-stage stratified sampling design. Socio-demographic characteristics were obtained. Weight and height were measured, age- and sex-specific standard scores for height and BMI were calculated to establish individual's anthropometric assessment. Having either stunting or thinness was considered undernutrition, while being overweight (including obesity) was considered overnutrition. If someone had undernutrition and/or overnutrition, they were classified as having malnutrition. The prevalence was determined using complex sampling analysis, while the association was assessed through logistic regression. The analysis included a total of 3,185 respondents. RESULTS: The prevalence of stunting, thinness, overweight and obesity among the respondents aged 5 to 17 years was 12.7%, 10.0%, 15.0% and 14.8%, respectively. The overall prevalence of malnutrition was 48.3%. Respondents residing in rural had 1.35 times more likelihood of experiencing undernutrition [AOR = 1.35, 95% CI (1.04, 1.77)] compared to their urban counterparts. Boys exhibited a greater likelihood of being overweight and obese than girls [AOR = 1.40, 95% CI (1.13, 1.73)]. Respondents aged 10 to 14 years were 1.37 times more likely to be overnutrition than those aged 5 to 9 years old [AOR = 1.37, 95% CI (1.09, 1.73)]. CONCLUSION: There is growing evidence of the increasing prevalence of coexistence of undernutrition along with overweight and obesity among children and adolescents in Malaysia. Moving forward, greater initiatives and efforts are required to formulate strategies for planning and implementing programs and policies to expedite progress in improving nutrition.

OBJECTIVES: This research work was performed: (1) To assess the accessibility of in-laboratory polysomnography for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI); (2) to evaluate the validity of four screening questionnaires for sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBDs); and (3) to assess the association between anthropometric features and apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). METHODS: An Environmental scan (E-scan) was performed in the province of Ontario, where all sleep clinics were invited to complete the E-scan survey. Furthermore, a cross-sectional study was performed at a rehabilitation hospital (Canada), where consecutive adults with subacute/chronic (>1 month) SCI were recruited. Using a home-based screening sleep test (HBSST), the validity of the Berlin, STOP, Medical Outcomes Study Sleep Scale [MOS-SS], and STOP-Bang screening questionnaires was assessed. The association between AHI and three features (i.e., neck circumference, body mass index [BMI] and oropharynx opening as assessed using the Modified Mallampati classification [MMC]) was evaluated. RESULTS: According to the E-scan, access to polysomnography is limited for the SCI population in Ontario. Of the 28 participants with SCI (11 females, 17 males; mean age: 54.9 years) included in the cross-sectional study, 32.1 % were diagnosed with moderate-to-severe SRBD. The performance of the questionnaires was considered insufficient for screening of individuals living with SCI. AHI was not associated with neck circumference, BMI, or MMC. CONCLUSIONS: Those results suggest that the use of a HBSST could overcome the barriers for individuals with SCI to access diagnostic testing of SRBDs. The use of screening questionnaires and risk assessment for SRBDs in the SCI population is unreliable.

This study aimed to compare and relate the body composition (obtained through anthropometry with the pentacompartmental model and the tricompartmental model by DXA) with bone mineral density and biochemical and nutritional parameters in Chilean adults with overweight/obesity and normal weight from La Araucanía region, Chile. A case-control study was conducted with 116 adults and volunteers from the PURE cohort, collecting sociodemographic data, BMI assessment, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and body composition using the pentacompartmental model (5CM) and tricompartmental model (3CM) by DXA, as well as bone mineral density (BMD). Blood biochemical parameters (fasting glucose and lipid profile), physical activity (PA) measured by GPAQ, and average dietary habits (R24h) were measured. In the overweight/obesity group, the 5CM and 3CM adipose mass were indirectly and moderately correlated with PA (p < 0.05), except in the male 5CM group. In the overweight/obesity group, muscle and fat-free mass (FFM) of the 5CM and 3CM correlated directly and moderately with blood fasting glucose (BFG) and BMD (p < 0.05), except in females, where FFM was not related to BMD but was related to residual mass (p < 0.01). Independent of gender and BMI, bone mineral content was positively and highly correlated with BMD (p < 0.0000). In the male overweight/obesity group, bone, skin, and residual mass were correlated with BFG (p < 0.05). In conclusion, for the assessment of non-athletic adult populations, more routine use of the 5CM in clinical practice is recommended.

ABSTRACT

There are studies on the effect of general nutrition education on diet quality and anthropometric measurements, while studies showing the effectiveness of sustainable nutrition education, which also addresses the effect of food on the environment, are quite limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of sustainable nutrition education on diet quality, anthropometric measurements, and the carbon footprint (CFP) and water footprint (WFP) of diet. A total of 160 university students received 1 h of sustainable nutrition education for 6 weeks. Before, at the end of, and 2 months after the courses, 24 h food consumption records were taken to assess diet quality and CFP and WFP values of diet, and Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2020 scores were evaluated. The results of the study showed that sustainable nutrition education increased MedDiet score by 1.86 points and HEI-2020 score by 7.38 points. This education program also decreased body weight, body mass index (BMI), fat mass, and neck circumference. Sustainability education has a positive impact on calcium, potassium, and magnesium intakes, a negative impact on vitamin B12 and zinc intakes, and no effect on total protein intake. Education resulted in a 22% reduction in CFP and a 10% reduction in WFP.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a chronic medical condition caused by an excessive accumulation of body fat that represents a major risk factor for public health. The relationship between obesity, quality of life (QoL) and mental health has been examined in some previous literature. However, the studies found have not linked anthropometric variables with QoL factors, as they have used generic questionnaires. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to analyse the influence of anthropometric variables on the QoL of people with obesity and examine its relationship with psychological variables. METHODS: It was a cross-sectional study composed of 77 Spanish participants adults (M = 45.12 years; SD = 10.29) collected from two different research projects. The measurements were carried out in the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Alicante (Spain), including sociodemographic variables, anthropometric data and psychological questionnaires. RESULTS: The finding demonstrated the relationship between anthropometric variables and all QoL factors. Also, individuals with lower QoL exhibit more symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress and are more prone to emotional eating. CONCLUSIONS: The findings highlight the necessity of integrating psychological support into obesity treatment strategies, as well as the importance of using QoL questionnaires specific to people with obesity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We are not aware of studies examining the association between dietary meal intake habits (DMIH) and severity of coronary artery stenosis (CAS). This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between DMIH and the severity of CAS as well as cardiometabolic risk factors in adults undergoing coronary angiography. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was done on 720 patients undergoing coronary angiography (aged 35-75 years) who were admitted to Afshar Hospital, a referral hospital for cardiovascular diseases in Yazd, Iran. Data on DMIH were gathered by interview. Blood samples were taken for biochemical analysis. Blood pressure, anthropometric indices, and body composition were also evaluated. The relationship between DMIH and the severity of CAS [examined by angiography based on Gensini Score (GS) and Syntax Score (SS)] and cardiometabolic risk factors were assessed using logistic regression and the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), respectively, in crude and multivariable adjusted models. RESULTS: After adjustment for all possible confounding variables, the study revealed that people who ate 3 meals/day had a lower risk of severe CAS compared to people who ate 2 or fewer meals (OR = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.26, 0.88, P-trend = 0.02). There was an inverse association between the number of snacks /day and the severity of CAS (OR = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.22, 0.87, P-trend = 0.02). There was also an inverse relationship between breakfast frequency/week and the severity of CAS based on both GS and SS (P < 0.05). Breakfast consumption, meal frequency, lunch consumption, snack frequency, and more food consumption on holidays were also associated with different cardiometabolic markers and anthropometric measures (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: According to the results of the present study, meal frequency and breakfast consumption might be inversely associated with CAS and cardiometabolic risk factors.

The aim of this study was to compare a traditional fronto-orbital remodeling and advancement (FORA) with the dynamic cranioplasty for trigonocephaly (DCT). The authors analyzed patients who underwent surgery for trigonocephaly. Perioperative data were compared. Parents were asked to use a visual analog scale to evaluate the pre- and postoperative distance between the eyes, the forehead shape, and the global appearance of the face. A panel of observers was asked to grade pre- and postoperative photographs using a similar visual analog scale. Pre- and postoperative anthropometric data were collected and analyzed in a subset of the study population aged 9 years or older. The total sample size was 51 patients (DCT n = 39; FORA n = 12). Durations of surgery and anesthesia were shorter in the DCT group (115 vs 194 min, p = 0.001; 226 vs 289 min, p = 0.001). Patients in the DCT group received similar preoperative ratings to those in the FORA group, but significantly higher postoperative ratings by parents for all three questions. There were no significant differences in postoperative ratings by the panel or postoperative anthropometric data. DCT is safe and effective. It is preferred over FORA because it is associated with shorter durations of surgery and anesthesia, while providing higher degrees of parental satisfaction and similar aesthetic and anthropometric outcomes.

The aim of the study is to compare the head displacement of the KPSIT C50 dummy during a frontal collision at a speed of 20 km/h, along with the change in the angle of the car seat backrest. Passenger car manufacturers recommend setting the backrest angle of the car seat between 100 and 125 degrees. It should be noted that the driver's position is of great importance in the event of a collision injury. In the event of a rear-end collision, the position of the headrest of the car seat is an element that affects the degree of the driver's injuries. In extreme cases, incorrect positioning of the headrest, even at low speed, can lead to serious injuries to the cervical spine and even death. The article is part of a large-scale study on low-speed crash testing. The research problem concerned the influence of the seat backrest angle on the head displacement during a low-speed collision. The article compares the displacement of the head of the KPSIT C50 dummy during a series of crash tests, where the angle of the car seat backrest was changed. On the basis of the research, it was found that the optimal angle of the car seat backrest is 110 degrees. In addition, a preliminary analysis of the displacements of the dummy's head showed a high risk of whiplash injury in people sitting in a fully reclined seat.

ABSTRACT

Background: Diabetes, a rapidly increasing heterogeneous disorder, is closely linked to the epidemic of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS). At present, we do not understand completely the blood biomarkers, molecular aetiology, and role of lifestyle modification and interventions to combat diabetes hand in hand with obesity and the MetS epidemic. Methods: To measure different anthropometric and blood biomarkers in pre-diabetic and diabetic patients, we collected data and blood samples from patients in a hospital OPD. This was a cross-sectional study that included the identification of possible relationships between different parameters to predict early diagnostic markers of diabetes. Results: We found increased body mass index (BMI), fasting blood glucose, neck, waist, and hip circumference, sagittal abdominal diameter, and skin fold thickness in the diabetic as compared to the pre-diabetic group. Also, serum uric acid and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values were significantly increased in diabetic individuals. We found a significant positive correlation between serum uric acid and BMI, fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, and HOMA-IR values. Conclusions: Here, we found that pre-diabetic and diabetic patients have increased fasting glucose levels while we did not find any difference in insulin levels. Both pre-diabetic and diabetic patients show high serum uric acid, positively associated with a higher prevalence of diabetes and HOMA-IR. Uric acid may hence be an important parameter for early diagnostics. These findings may be used as a basis for future studies that aim to identify the mechanistic details of the association of uric acid with insulin signaling and hence better understanding of the phenomenon associated with diabetes. ABSTRACT

Purpose: Diabetes can cause nerve damage, vascular issues, and reduced blood flow to organs such as the feet, leading to foot deformities and ulcers due to high glucose levels. A healthy dietary pattern like DASH can improve insulin sensitivity and weight loss. Due to limited data and rare evidence, our study aims to investigate the relationship between DASH diet adherence and anthropometric, cardiovascular, and foot ulcer indicators. Methods: The study included 339 diabetic patients with foot ulcers (122 females and 217 males). The study gathered data on patient dietary intake, anthropometric measurements, biochemistry, foot ulcers, and novel atherogenic risk factors per international definitions. Results: The average BMI of the participants was 29.2 ± 5.0, 28.1 ± 4.3, and 28.2 ± 4.2 in the tertiles of DASH index (P-value: 0.18). By increasing the adherence to the DASH index, the monofilament score did not change significantly OR: 1.47; CI: (0.81-2.67). Also, foot ulcer area did not change significantly between DASH tertiles OR: 1.01; CI: (0.56-1.83). Atherogenic risk factors also decreased among the DASH tertiles, but statistically not significant. Conclusion: DASH adherence did not change neuropathy score and cholindex and cardiovascular risk factors significantly and has no significant effect on foot ulcer size.

ABSTRACT

The increase of video surveillance systems has highlighted the interest in forensic anthropometric analysis of subjects who commit crimes and are captured by cameras during their criminal activities. There are different methodologies for human height estimation. Forensic researchers developed a methodological approach that allows the height of a subject to be estimated through a combined model of 3D laser scanning acquisition and video images acquired by video surveillance systems. The proposed study had highlighted three limits: not assessments had been made for image correction to limit the distortion effect, the method had been tested by only one laboratory and probably height assessment was dependent on the ergonomics. To overcome these limitations, in this paper the analysis was repeated by correcting the images to compare the new results obtained with the previous ones. Furthermore, the same methodological approach was applied by estimating the height of a mannequin, to limit the ergonomic effects, and proposing the same study to three different forensic laboratories to compare the results. The presented study demonstrates the reliability and repeatability of the system, as the results obtained by the three laboratories are very similar. They have obtained the same trend and the maximum estimate distance is approximately 6 cm. Furthermore, it has showed that the accuracy of results is dependent on image correction, which has little impact (approximately 1 cm more accurate on the corrected frame than the normal frame) on the height evaluation and they are not dependent to the ergonomics of the subject captured.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a consequence of insulin resistance, insulin deficiency, or both. It is usually seen in adults and is a consequence of genetic (polygenic inheritance), endogenous (obesity and or hormonal factors), and environmental factors (e.g., obesogenic environment, endocrine disrupting chemicals, stress, and medicines). The prevalence of T2DM has increased over the past few decades. South Asians, including Indians, are more prone to central adiposity and develop lifestyle diseases like T2DM at body mass index values lower than those considered normal for the Western population. Generally, the first line of treatment is metformin monotherapy with lifestyle changes in patients with T2DM. Most of the research conducted on this drug is on Western subjects. Since the Indian population has genetic differences in the site of deposition of adipose and is more prone to develop lifestyle diseases, the effect of metformin may be different in Indians. METHODS: Seventy-one (34 female, non-pregnant, non-lactating) adults with newly diagnosed T2DM were recruited in this short-duration pilot study after obtaining written informed consent. Patients regularly taking any drug were excluded, as were patients with chronic comorbidities. Treatment was initiated with metformin 500 mg OD. Lifestyle changes were recommended according to the age and physical condition of the patients. Anthropometric parameters (age, weight, height, BMI, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR)), blood pressure, glycemic status (fasting and 2 h PP glucose and HbA1c), and lipid profile of the subjects were recorded before initiating and six months after initiating metformin monotherapy with lifestyle changes. RESULTS: Small but statistically significant improvements were observed in the WHR,WHtR, blood pressure, blood glucose, and glycated hemoglobin. Although improvement was also observed in weight and lipid profile, these changes were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: This study shows that metformin monotherapy with lifestyle changes is suitable for patients of Indian origin and results in improvement in the WHR, WHtR, blood pressure, plasma glucose, and glycated hemoglobin.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To determine the relationship between preoperative nutritional status assessed using anthropometric measures and postoperative complications in pediatric surgical patients. METHODOLOGY: This prospective observational cohort study included 650 patients from 6 months to 18 years undergoing elective surgery at our institution. Elective surgery included procedures such as herniotomy, orchidopexy, urethroplasty, cystoscopy, PUV fulguration, pyeloplasty, ureteric reimplantation, stoma formation/closure, anorectoplasty, pull-through, choledochal cyst excision and repair, VP shunt insertion, lipomyelomeningocele repair, diastematomyelia excision and repair, and cyst excision. Nutritional status was standardized using Z scores for weight, length, and BMI. Patients were monitored for a month following surgery to detect any complications, and they were classified into five grades using the Clavien-Dindo classification. The duration of hospital stays and readmission within 30 days following discharge were secondary outcomes. RESULTS: There were 627 patients of both sexes involved in the study: 350 patients aged 6 months to 5 years (Group A), while 277 were aged between 5 and 18 years (Group B). Wasting status was 47.71% in Group A and 41.52% in Group B. In Group A, 40% of patients were stunted, while 83.75% were in Group B. Group A had 57.14% underweight patients. The complication rate was 39.14% in Group A and 38.99% in Group B. The incidence of postoperative complications was not significantly different in malnourished patients. The patients with prolonged duration of surgery (> 2 h) developed more complications in both groups (Group A-67.2%, Group B-82.6%; p < 0.0001). In addition, the patients who experienced complications had lengthier hospital stays (p < 0.001 in both groups) and increased readmission rates (p = 0.016 in Group A and p = 0.008 in Group B). CONCLUSION: In our study, half of the patients in Group A and nearly two-third in Group B were malnourished. The preoperative poor nutritional status based on anthropometric parameters is not associated with increased postoperative complications. Randomized control trials linking preoperative malnutrition based on anthropometric measures and clinical outcomes in pediatric surgery patients are necessary to provide more robust information on this subject.
