ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to analyze the survival and growth of intergeneric (Acispenser ruthenus × Huso huso L.) sterbel hybrids obtained by fertilizing sterlet eggs with cryopreserved beluga semen. The rate of embryonic development did not differ between sterbel hybrids (experimental groups) and sterlets (control groups), and the hatching period was identical in all groups. The survival rate of hybrid larvae was higher in the experimental groups than in the control groups. Body weight and body length measurements revealed that sterbel hybrids grew at a faster rate than the control group sterlets. The hybrid origin of sterbels produced with the use of cryopreserved beluga semen was confirmed in a genetic analysis based on species-specific DNA fragments. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to analyze the growth of sterbel hybrids derived from cryopreserved semen. The research findings indicate that this type of intergeneric hybridization delivers satisfactory results and can be applied in sturgeon aquaculture.

ABSTRACT

Conger eel (Conger myriaster) is an economically important species in China. Due to the complex life history of the conger eel, achieving artificial reproduction has remained elusive. This study aimed to explore the effect of water stimulation on hormonal regulation during the artificial reproduction of conger eel. The experiment was divided into four groups: A1 (no hormone injection, still water), A2 (no hormone injection, flowing water), B1 (hormone injection, still water), and B2 (hormone injection, flowing water). The flowing water group maintained a flow velocity of 0.4 ± 0.05 m/s for 12 h daily throughout the 60-day period. Steroid hormone levels in the serum and ovaries of conger eels were analyzed using UPLC-MS/MS and ELISA on the 30th and 60th days of the experiment. The relative expression levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSHß) and luteinizing hormone (LHß) in the pituitary were determined by quantitative PCR. The results showed a significantly lower gonadosomatic index (GSI) in B2 compared to B1 (p < 0.05) on the 30th day. FSH was found to act only in the early stages of ovarian development, with water stimulation significantly enhancing FSH synthesis (p < 0.05), while FSHß gene was not expressed after hormone injection. Conversely, LH was highly expressed in late ovarian development, with flowing water stimulation significantly promoting LH synthesis (p < 0.05). Serum cortisol (COR) levels were significantly higher in the flowing water group than in the still water group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, estradiol (E2) content of B2 was significantly lower than that of B1 on the 30th and 60th day. Overall, flowing water stimulation enhanced the synthesis of FSH in early ovarian development and LH in late ovarian development, while reducing E2 accumulation in the ovaries. In this study, the effect of flowing water stimulation on hormone regulation during the artificial reproduction of conger eel was initially investigated to provide a theoretical basis for optimizing artificial reproduction techniques.

ABSTRACT

Artificial reproduction is a bottleneck to produce stocking material for many species of freshwater fish. One of these species is the asp, Leuciscus aspius. Research in the field of artificial reproduction of this species is very scarce and often incomplete. There are no breeding protocols specifying optimal environmental conditions and hormonal stimulation for many species of rheophilic cyprinids, including asp. Since the number of natural asp populations is constantly decreasing, it is important to support natural stocks by restocking with high quality stocking material. For this reason, optimized protocols are needed to breed this species under controlled conditions to produce stocking material with high biodiversity and good health. Such an approach will make it possible to maintain the population of natural asp at a constant level. The aim of this study was to develop the protocol of asp artificial reproduction using optimized thermal conditions and appropriate hormonal stimulation. In experiment I, the influence of constant temperature (10.0, 12.0 and 14.0 °C) on the effectiveness of artificial reproduction of asp. In experiment II, the effectiveness of asp reproduction was checked after the application of spawning agents: Ovopel, Ovaprim or a combination of these two agents The obtained results indicate that for the final maturation of oocytes (FOM) and artificial reproduction of asp in controlled conditions, water temperatures of 10-12 °C are the most useful. Under these thermal conditions, the highest percentages of female's ovulation and embryo survival, as well as the percentage of hatching, were obtained. Hormone injections are necessary to perform final oocyte maturation (FOM) in female asp in captivity. All spawning agents used were especially useful for artificial reproduction of asp, however, the best values of the studied indices, such as ovulation rate and embryo survival, were obtained after the application of Ovaprim or the combination of Ovopel and Ovaprim in water temperature at a range of 10-12 °C. It was found that the pH of ovarian fluid may be a preliminary indicator of the biological quality of eggs in asps. The optimal pH value is 8.0-8.4. At pH below 7.4, no viable embryos were observed.

ABSTRACT

To date, the eel industry still depends on wild-caught juveniles that are grown to marketable size. There is an urgent need to close the eel life cycle in captivity to make aquaculture independent of the natural population. With this artificial reproduction protocol, yolk-sac larvae can be produced but egg quality may be impaired. Low survival rates and high deformity rates are frequently observed during the first week after hatching. Over the past four years, we have conducted studies with the aim to optimize the artificial reproduction protocol, thereby focussing on increasing egg and larval quality. Weekly carp or salmon pituitary extract (PE) treatment was successfully replaced with recombinant gonadotropins (rGTHs) to mature female eels and produce larvae. 17α,20ß-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) was replaced with upstream precursor progesterone (P) to induce the endogenous production of DHP by the female eel. DHP and P were found equally potent in inducing oocyte maturation and ovulation. The effects of antibiotics on larval survival and the occurrence of deformities were investigated. Antibiotic treatment increased survival and decreased the occurrence of deformities indicating bacterial infection as an important cause. A deformity determination key for young eel larvae has been developed that provides a framework of reference for larval deformities which will be instrumental with gaining insights on the reasons behind each larval deformity. These improvements of the artificial reproduction protocol and hatchery practices will contribute to the production of robust eel larvae that survive, grow and metamorphose into juveniles that will later be able to reproduce in captivity.

ABSTRACT

The current status of the barbels inhabiting the Kazakhstan section of the Syrdarya River needs special study, as has been noted since the second half of the 20th century. Stocks of commercial fish valuable in the past as barbels in the Aral-Syrdarya basin are now catastrophically reduced as a result of anthropogenic impact on the ichthyofauna and natural environment of the Aral Sea region. The study of the condition; abundance and distribution range is necessary to determine measures for their restoration in natural habitats and their breeding in fish farms. Research on the biotechnology of barbel breeding with subsequent acclimatization and reacclimatization of these fish species will not only improve the composition of the ichthyofauna of the Aral-Syrdarya basin, but also preserve the genetic potential of natural populations. At present, the only way to restore the population of the Aral barbel is stocking hatchery reared juveniles in natural environments. Under the current situation, a way forward is seen in the creation of domesticated replacement-broodstocks of barbels. As a result of the influence of anthropogenic factors, the populations of this species have come to almost complete degradation and depletion and require the development and adoption of urgent measures for their conservation and restoration through reintroduction, which is a priority and urgent task for the fisheries of the republic.

ABSTRACT

The collection of gametes from recently deceased domestic and wildlife mammals has been well documented in the literature. Through the utilization of gametes recovered postmortem, scientists have successfully produced embryos in 10 different wildlife species, while in 2 of those, offspring have also been born. Thus, the collection of gametes from recently deceased animals represents a valuable opportunity to increase genetic resource banks, obviating the requirement for invasive procedures. Despite the development of several protocols for gamete collection, the refinement of these techniques and the establishment of species-specific protocols are still required, taking into account both the limitations and the opportunities. In the case of wildlife, the optimization of such protocols is impeded by the scarcity of available animals, many of which have a high genetic value that must be protected rather than utilized for research purposes. Therefore, optimizing protocols for wildlife species by using domestic species as a model is crucial. In this review, we focused on the current advancements in the collection, preservation, and utilization of gametes, postmortem, in selected species belonging to Equidae, Bovidae, and Felidae, both domestic and wildlife.

ABSTRACT

Naked carp (Gymnocypris przewalskii) is the only fish species commercially harvested in Qinghai Lake, which is the largest inland saltwater lake in China. Multiple ecological stresses such as long-term overfishing, drying-up of riverine inflows, and decreases in spawning habitat caused the naked carp population to decrease from 320,000 tons before the 1950s to only 3000 tons by the early 2000s. We used matrix projection population modeling to quantitatively simulate the dynamics of the naked carp population from the 1950s to the 2020s. Five versions of the matrix model were developed from the field and laboratory information that represented different population states (high but declining, low abundance, very low abundance, initial recovery, pristine). Equilibrium analysis was applied to density-independent versions of the matrices and population growth rate, age composition, and elasticities were compared among versions. Stochastic, density-dependent version of the most recent decade (recovering) version was used to simulate the time-dependent responses to a range of levels of artificial reproduction (addition of age-1 from hatchery) and of the pristine version to simulate combinations of fishing rate and minimum age of harvest. Results showed the major role of overfishing in the population decline and that the population growth rate was most sensitive to the survival of juveniles and the spawning success of early-age adults. Dynamic simulations showed a rapid population response to artificial reproduction when population abundance was low and that if artificial reproduction continues at its current level, then population biomass would reach 75% of its pristine biomass after 50 years. Simulations with the pristine version identified sustainable fishing levels and the importance of protecting the first few ages of maturity. Overall, modeling results showed that artificial reproduction under conditions of no fishing is an effective approach to restoring the naked carp population. Further effectiveness should consider maximizing survival in the months just after release and maintaining genetic and phenotypic diversity. More information on density-dependent growth, survival, and reproduction, as well as on the genetic diversity and growth and migratory behavior (phenotypic variation) of released and native-spawned fish, would help inform management and conservation strategies and practices going forward.

In the field of reproductive rights disputes, following the wrong birth litigation caused by prenatal diagnosis errors, the emerging reproductive rights litigation caused by the fault of human assisted reproductive technology has become more typical. Medical institutions shall bear the corresponding liability for compensation for loss, damage, wrong implantation of gametes or embryos in vitro due to its negligence, which constitutes an infringement on the reproductive rights of patients and spouses. During cryopreservation of embryo in vitro, if one of the couple of the gamete donor dies, the surviving spouse has the right to exercise the reproductive right. The surviving spouse has the right to ask the medical institution to remove the obstacles for the behavior that the medical institution refuses to hand over the frozen embryos to the surviving spouse. For the deliberate destruction of frozen embryos by medical institutions, patients have the right to ask medical institutions to bear the liability for damages.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Review the experience, principles and parameters of the sturgeon assessment quality by anomalies in early ontogeny. RESULTS: Maintaining the number of sturgeon fish in the transboundary Caspian Sea is provided by five states (Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan) at 16 Sturgeon hatcheries, where their artificial reproduction is carried out. FAO recognizes Russia's leadership in creating the basic technology for the sturgeon artificial reproduction, but the other four Caspian states also make a significant contribution to its modern optimizations. There is almost a century of tradition behind the technological development of artificial reproduction in sturgeons. During the artificial reproduction of sturgeons, anomalies in the structure and functions may occur, such as deformities, defects in organs and tissues, edema, hematomas, etc. The sturgeon anomalies classification is based on structural and functional principles. Identification of anomalies is carried out on the basis of a previously created classification, divided into nine large classes. Identification of sturgeon anomalies during the period of their artificial reproduction makes it possible to clarify the real value of replenishment of their stock. METHODS: Analysis of professional scientific literature and practical guides. CONCLUSIONS: The presence and number of Sturgeon anomalies make it possible to determine their death percentage to calculate the real number of replenishment of the Caspian Sturgeon stock.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes a study in which different types of the reproduction of wild vimba bream (Vimba vimba) under controlled conditions were compared. Reproduction was performed by using three methods: spontaneous (natural spawning- NS groups): without hormones but with nests, semi-artificial (S groups) with hormones and nests, and artificial (A groups) with hormones and manual stripping of gametes. In groups S and A, different types of hormonal stimulation were tested: common carp pituitary homogenate (CPH), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and commercial pellets containing mammalian GnRHa and dopamine antagonist-metoclopramide (Ovopel). The number of spawning fish, i.e., spermiating males and ovulating females, were compared depending on the type of breeding and the stimulant used. The lowest number of finally matured fish: spermiating males (67 %) and ovulating females (0 %) were noted in the spontaneously reproduced group. The best method of reproducing wild vimba bream under controlled conditions was the semi-artificial approach with hormonal stimulation and spawning nests, where ovulation rates in hormonally treated groups were between 43 % and 71 %, vs 26-57 % in artificial spawning groups. No ovulation observe in control groups in S and A types of reproduction. The highest embryo survival to the eyed-egg-stage was noted in group A-hCG (average 88.2). A higher value of spawning effectiveness (Se) with the use of the same hormones was obtained for groups S (0.374-0.574) than for groups A (0.252-0.493). In both cases, the highest Se was recorded for Ovopel stimulated fish and the lowest in hCG stimulated groups.

ABSTRACT

Paternal age at conception has been increasing. In this review, we first present the results from the major mammalian animal models used to establish that increasing paternal age does affect progeny outcome. These models provide several major advantages including the possibility to assess multi- transgenerational effects of paternal age on progeny in a relatively short time window. We then present the clinical observations relating advanced paternal age to fertility and effects on offspring with respect to perinatal health, cancer risk, genetic diseases, and neurodevelopmental effects. An overview of the potential mechanism operating in altering germ cells in advanced age is presented. This is followed by an analysis of the current state of management of reproductive risks associated with advanced paternal age. The numerous challenges associated with developing effective, practical strategies to mitigate the impact of advanced paternal age are outlined along with an approach on how to move forward with this important clinical quandary.

Seasonal reproduction of domesticated pikeperch has been the most critical spawning batch in several European countries. The present study aimed to monitor oocyte growth between mid-November and seasonal spawning to evaluate if oocyte growth trends may predict egg quality. Nineteen sexually mature females were monitored for oocyte sizes every two months. In mid-March, fish were transported to the indoor facility and artificially reproduced. Sixteen females ovulated and egg quality parameters were assessed and further related to oocyte sizes measured in November, January, and March, as well as to size increments between samplings. Based on the oocyte diameters, fish were assigned to two size groups, and the egg quality was compared. Oocyte growth was greater between the first two samplings compared to the consecutive period (150.1 ± 16.5 µm vs 24.7 ± 20.4 µm). Diameters assessed in November and March positively correlated with oil globule fragmentation, while diameters assessed in November and January positively correlated with larval malformation. Although in January larger oocytes showed better embryo survival than smaller ones (60.6 ± 9.5% vs 37.8 ± 23.2%,) they were characterized with greater percent of malformed larvae (25.0 ± 22.0% vs 5.4 ± 3.9%). It appears that fish with bigger oocytes in pre-season have an affinity toward increased embryo survival, however, they seem to have an issue with oil globule fragmentation and larvae malformation in case of seasonal spawning. Therefore, the selection of breeders for either pre-seasonal or seasonal reproduction batch according to the November oocyte size is recommended.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of different hormonal agents and their combinations for spawning induction of females Caspian roach, Rutilus caspicus. Five groups of fish were injected intraperitoneally as follows: two injections of Ovaprim (T1), two injections of Ovopel (T2), a priming dose of Ovopel with a resolving dose of Ovaprim (T3), a priming dose of Ovaprim with a resolving dose of Ovopel (T4), and two injections of sterile 0.9% NaCl solution as a control group. The results showed that no fish ovulated in the control group. In hormone-treated groups, no differences were observed in ovulation success (P > 0.05). The shortest latency time and highest working and relative fecundities were observed in fish stimulated with two injections of Ovaprim (T1 group). The mean values of fertilization success in treated fish were in the range of 87.9-93.1% and the highest values were observed in T3 and T1 groups (P < 0.05). The best results in terms of ovulation index (92.1%), hatching rate (93.7%), and survival up to the eyed egg stage (89.4%) were achieved after administering two injections of Ovaprim (T1 group). There were no significant differences in the incubation time and embryos survival rates up to absorbing the yolk sac among different groups (P > 0.05). Overall, the best results of controlled reproduction of Caspian roach were obtained after using two injections of Ovaprim. Consequently, the Ovaprim is more suitable for restocking and aquaculture purposes of endangered populations of Caspian roach.

The aim of this study was to describe the selected stages of embryonic development in Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) and hybrids of Siberian sturgeons and Russian sturgeons (Acipenser baerii × Acipenser gueldenstaedtii). For this purpose, embryos representing nine distinct developmental stages (stage 1-2.0 hpf, stage 2-5.5 hpf, stage 3-13.0 hpf, stage 4-20.0 hpf, stage 5-24.0 hpf, stage 6-26.0 hpf, stage 7-35.0 hpf, stage 8-55.0 hpf, and, stage 9-160.0 hpf; hpf-hours postfertilization) were sampled from each group (group A, group B, and group C) during incubation. Stages of embryogenesis were identified based on a 30-point scale of embryonic development in sturgeons. A total of 13 developmental stages were identified, including early cleavage, blastula formation, early and late gastrulation, onset of neurulation, beginning of organogenesis, and prelarvae. During gastrulation, the survival of hybrid embryos was highest in group B (93.8%) and lowest in group A (86.7%). Embryonic deformation was not observed during experimental incubation. The archived data relating to the embryonic development of Siberian sturgeon × Russian sturgeon hybrids could be applied to identify the individual stages of embryogenesis in hybrid sturgeons during egg incubation.

Reproductive obstacles have led scientists to develop novel techniques/technologies for artificial reproduction. We aimed to investigate the possibility of propagating zebrafish females using sperm ovarian lavage with and without presence of male stimulus. This experiment consisted of several treatments: traditional spawning approaches with females and wild-type males (AB♀ × AB♂); no males present with non-manipulated females (AB♀); no males present with females inseminated with NaCl into ovarian lobes [AB♀(inj.NaCl)]; no males present with females inseminated with sperm from transgenic males into ovarian lobes [AB♀(inj.Tg♂)]; non-manipulated females kept separately from wild-type males (AB♀|AB♂); females kept separately from wild-type males and inseminated with NaCl into ovarian lobes [AB♀(inj.NaCl)|AB♂]; and females kept separately from wild-type males and inseminated with sperm from transgenic males into ovarian lobes [AB♀(inj.Tg♂)|AB♂]. There were no released eggs in both negative control treatments (AB♀ and AB♀|AB♂). Egg production increased (ranged from 0 to 28.5 eggs/female) when females were injected in the presence [AB♀ (inj.NaCl) |AB♂] or absence of male stimulus [AB♀ (inj.NaCl) and (AB♀(inj.Tg♂)]. A further increase in egg production [relative to AB♀, AB♀ (inj.NaCl), and AB♀|AB♂] was detected when females were inseminated with pooled sperm from transgenic males in the presence of male stimulus [AB♀(inj.Tg♂)|AB♂; ranged from 2.5 to 55 eggs/female] or when using traditional spawning approaches (AB♀ × AB♂; ranged from 25 to 131 eggs/female). Females inseminated with sperm produced embryos, although no differences were detected when females were inseminated with pooled sperm from transgenic males in presence (11.8 ± 16.3%) or absence (average = 12.6 ± 9.2%) of male stimulus. Traditional spawning approaches produced the most eggs (81.2 ± 42.3 per female) and highest fertilization rate (81.3 ± 10.4).

ABSTRACT

The blue bream Ballerus ballerus (L.) is one of two species of the Ballerus genus occurring in Europe. The biotechnology for its reproduction under controlled conditions needs to be developed to conserve its local populations. Therefore, a range of experiments were performed to obtain valuable gametes from blue bream following hormonal stimulation with carp pituitary homogenate (CPH), Ovopel and Ovaprim. CPH and Ovopel were injected twice and Ovaprim-once, under a pectoral fin. The spawners were inspected 12 h after the last injection, and the gametes were collected. Eggs were collected from spawning females and fertilized with sperm from three males. The smallest number of ovulating blue bream (four females) was obtained from individuals stimulated with Ovaprim. There were six to nine ovulating females in the other groups, accounting for 60-90% of the females in the respective groups. The latency period was the shortest in the spawners stimulated with Ovopel. The fish in this group ovulated 14 h after the hormonal injection. Spawning was synchronized and all females spawned simultaneously. The highest average weight of eggs per fish (75.4 g) was obtained from the females stimulated with Ovopel, whereas the individuals stimulated with Ovaprim provided the smallest average amount of eggs (49.5 g). The study showed that blue bream spawners are not very sensitive to reproduction-related handling under controlled conditions.

Knowledge of the sperm-oocyte ratio in fish fertilization serves as the basis for studies on artificial reproduction and gamete manipulation. The aim of this study was to determine the minimum insemination dose for Brycon amazonicus oocyte fertilization. Female and male gametes were used and tested with the following doses of spermatozoa oocyte-1 ml-1: 10,000, 20,000, 40,000, 60,000 and 80,000 (in triplicate). Fertilization rates were calculated and estimated from the regression equation by applying the segmented regression model 'Linear Response Plateau' to determine the appropriate proportion of gametes. Based on the equation Y = 14.3415 + 0.0007836X, the fertilization rate increased up to 63.34% as it reached a plateau with a proportion of 62,524 spermatozoa oocyte-1 ml-1, which is the minimum insemination dose recommended for artificial insemination of the species.

ABSTRACT

The wels catfish Silurus glanis is valuable fish for aquaculture. Its production relies mainly on artificial reproduction. One of the crucial steps determining success of the reproduction is elimination of egg stickiness after fertilization. To date, the catfish egg de-adhesion is usually carried out using proteolytic enzymes. Here, we prove a novel method based on oxidation of the egg surface by means of sodium hypochlorite. An effect of different exposure times and concentrations on the egg adhesiveness and damage was tested in the first trial. The selected concentration of sodium hypochlorite 0.3 mg · l-1 with exposure time 40 s was used for comparison with the conventical de-adhesion method using alcalase treatment. The fertilization and hatching rates reached very satisfactory outcome in both treatments (98.3 ± 0.7% vs 97.5 ± 2.2% and 86.6 ± 8.3% vs 91.3 ± 8.5% in alcalase- and sodium hypochlorite-treated embryos, respectively) without any statistical differences. Thus, the de-adhesion method using sodium hypochlorite can be recommended as a suitable method for wels catfish eggs. The method is simple, cheap, very fast, and the treated eggs are disinfected.

ABSTRACT

Wild fish domestication can be considered a strategic approach to endangered species conservation, supporting studies and reducing economic and environmental costs. Three of the most important strategies in the domestication processes of fish are the adaptation of wild fish to captivity, the reproduction of the adapted fish and the production and maintenance of the young individuals. That being said, the present study is divided in three experiments: the 1st aimed to adapt wild Pseudopimelodus mangurus to captivity environment using different feeding approaches and a prophylactic strategie; the 2nd aimed to reproduce the adapted individuals from the 1st experiment; and the 3rd aimed to train the P. mangurus juveniles to accept commercial diets. The 1st and 2nd experiments were successful at the maintenance and artificial reproduction of P. mangurus kept in tanks between the reproductive seasons. The results suggest that the reproductive performance of animals kept in captivity (initial relative fertility-IRF = 609.25 ± 36.6 eggs/g) was similar (p > 0,05) to the performance found in wild individuals (IRF = 679.21 ± 45.66 eggs/g). Feed training of P. mangurus juveniles (3rd experiment) was also conducted, evaluating three feeding treatments with different concentrations of bovine heart and ration. At the end of the experiment, the treatment containing half bovine heart and half commercial feeding resulted in the highest values of weight gain (0.10 ± 0.16 g), specific growth rate (0.37 ± 0.11 mm), length (47.78 ± 2.35 mm) and growth (2.15 ± 2.27 mm), suggesting reasonable acceptability to artificial diets in the cultivation of this species. As conclusion, the present study contributes with the development of techniques for the domestication of fresh water fish species with commercial value or andangered of extinction, showing the domestication and reproduction of wild P. mangurus in captivity. However, more studies have to be conducted in order to improve the acceptance of artificial feeding by juveniles and to increase their survival rate.


A domesticação de peixes selvagens pode ser considerada uma abordagem estratégica para a conservação de espécies ameaçadas, apoiando estudos e reduzindo custos econômicos e ambientais. Três das estratégias mais importantes para o processo de domesticação de peixes são a adaptação dos peixes ao cativeiro, a reprodução dos peixes adaptados e a produção e manutenção dos indivíduos jovens. O presente estudo está dividido em três partes: a 1ª objetivou adaptar Pseudopimelodus mangurus selvagens ao ambiente de cativeiro usando diferentes abordagens alimentares e uma estratégia profilática; o 2º objetivou reproduzir os indivíduos adaptados do 1º experimento; e o 3º teve como objetivo treinar os juvenis de P. mangurus para aceitar dietas comerciais. O 1o e 2o experimento obteveram sucesso na manutenção e reprodução artificial de P. mangurus mantidos em tanques entre as estações reprodutivas. Os resultados sugerem que o desempenho reprodutivo dos animais mantidos em cativeiro (fertilidade inicial relativa-FIR = 609,25 ± 36,6 ovos / g) foi similar (p> 0,05) ao dos indivíduos selvagens (FIR = 679,21 ± 45,66 ovos / g). O treinamento alimentar de P. mangurus juvenis (3º experimento) também foi realizado avaliando-se 3 tratamentos alimentares com diferentes concentrações de coração bovino e ração. Ao final do experimento, o tratamento contendo metade coração bovino e metade ração gerou os maiores valores de ganho de peso (0,10 ± 0,16 g), taxa de crescimento específico (0,37 ± 0,11 mm), comprimento (47,78 ± 2,35 mm) e crescimento (2,15 ± 2,27 mm), sugerindo razoável aceitabilidade para dietas artificiais no cultivo desta espécie. Como conclusão, o presente estudo contribui com o desenvolvimento de técnicas para a domesticação espécies de peixes de água doce, de interesse comercial ou ameaçados de extinção, mostrando a domesticação e reproduçao de em cativeiro P. Mangurus selvagens. No entanto, mais estudos devem ser conduzidos no intuito de aumentar a aceitação de dietas comerciais pelos juvenis e melhorar sua taxa sobrevivência.

The present study aimed to evaluate two different methods of artificial reproduction induction, and characterize the embryonic development of Salminus hilarii. Different than observed for other tropical fish species, artificial reproduction induction followed by hand-stripping of gametes was considered unfeasible for S. hilarii, as no gamete fertilization was observed. However, females that were induced and spawned naturally presented a fertilization rate of 65.64 ± 0.54%. With a mean temperature of 26.20 ± 0.90ºC it was possible to clearly distinguish a large perivitelline space at 14 min after fertilization (AF) and at 49 min AF more than 50% of the embryos presented two blastomeres, and these cleavages occurred until 1 h 54 min AF. The gastrula phase was characterized at 3 h 56 min AF, and blastopore closure was observed at 8 h 31 min AF. At 9 h 1 min, organogenesis started, with a clear distinction of the yolk mass, embryonic axis, cephalic and caudal regions; at 11 h 51 min AF the embryos already had advanced segmentation and a free tail. Total hatching occurred at 21 h 17 min and after opening the mouth, which occurred at 33 h 9 min, the larvae of S. hilarii presented a strong and characteristic cannibalism. This information can be considered fundamental to improving S. hilarii production in captivity and for collaboration with a conservation programme in the upper Tietê river basin.
