ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT A new species of Bryconops is described based on its unique caudal-fin color pattern, with a dark blotch occupying the mid-basal region of the caudal-fin dorsal lobe, and a combination of 29-32 branched anal-fin rays, 44-47 perforated scales in the lateral line, six rows of scales above the lateral line, and a deep body (30.3-31.7 % SL). The new species belongs to the subgenus Bryconops based on its edentulous and short maxilla, with the posterior extension of that bone not reaching the junction between the second and third infraorbitals. The new species was previously reported in the literature as B. caudomaculatus. However, these species differ from each other in morphometric and meristic characters, as well as in color pattern. Comments on distribution of Bryconops species in coastal drainages of Suriname and French Guiana additional support for biogeographic hypotheses in this area.


RESUMO Uma nova espécie de Bryconops é descrita com base no colorido único da nadadeira caudal, com uma mancha escura ocupando a região médio-basal do lobo superior da nadadeira caudal, e uma combinação de 29-32 raios ramificados na nadadeira anal, 44-47 escamas perfuradas na linha lateral, seis séries de escamas acima da linha lateral e corpo alto (30,3-31,7 % CP). A nova espécie pertence ao subgênero Bryconops com base na maxila edêntula e curta, com extensão posterior deste osso não atingindo a junção entre segundo e terceiro infraorbitais. A nova espécie foi reportada anteriormente na literatura como B. caudomaculatus. Contudo, essas espécies diferem uma da outra em caracteres merísticos e morfométricos, bem como no padrão de coloração. Comentários sobre a distribuição das espécies de Bryconops em drenagens costeiras do Suriname e Guiana Francesa fornecem suporte adicional para as hipóteses biogeográficas nesta área.

ABSTRACT

Sublethal exposures to environmental pollutants may cause changes in physiological parameters. Thus, knowledge of basal physiological rates of the species and the development of methods to quantify these rates are extremely important. Considering the scarcity of cardiac and muscle physiological studies in native Amazonian fish species and that no evaluation of electrophysiological responses by exposure to a stressor has been reported in Bryconops caudomaculatus, the aim of this study was to develop techniques of electromyographic and electrocardiographic recordings of normal responses, during toxicity induction and short-term recovery. A total of 9 animals were used, divided into two groups: control group (n = 4) and treated group (n = 5), with records lasting 5 min. The results showed that the basal electromyographic records indicate that the studied species has a very intense swimming activity, whereas the basal cardiac parameters clearly showed the patterns in P wave tracing, QRS complex, T wave and Q-T and R-R intervals. During exposure to the stressor, muscle activity ceased presenting intense decrease and myorelaxant effect expected. Electrocardiographic responses confirmed cardiotoxicity with intense bradycardia, ventricular bigeminism, prolongation of QRS complex duration and cardiac arrhythmias, indicating cardiac dysfunction. It was concluded that the electrophysiological responses are excellent biomarkers and showed the susceptibility of the species to the tested substance. In addition, the electrocardiogram and the electromyogram are excellent techniques to reflect the degree of environmental stress when organisms are exposed to toxic substances in the environment.

ABSTRACT

A new species of Bryconops is described from a tributary to the rio Madeira in the Amazon basin, State of Rondônia, Brazil. Bryconops piracolina belongs to the subgenus Bryconops by having no teeth or rarely one tooth in the maxilla, and a naked area on cheek between the second and third infraorbitals. The new species is distinguished from all species of this subgenus by the presence of a large black blotch on dorsal-fin base. Furthermore, it is distinguished from all congeners, except B. inpai, by possessing the adipose fin entirely black. It differs from B. inpai by the lack of humeral spots. It further differs from all species of the subgenus Bryconops, except B. caudomaculatus, by having the last scales of the longitudinal series of scales that bears the lateral line series not pored beyond the end of the hypural plate, and differs from B. caudomaculatus by the smaller number of pored lateral line scales (31-36, mean 34.6, vs. 37-43, mean = 40.6, respectively).


Uma nova espécie de Bryconops é descrita para um tributário do rio Madeira na bacia do rio Amazonas, Brasil. Bryconops piracolina pertence ao subgênero Bryconops por não possuir dentes ou raramente apresentar apenas um dente na maxila, e por possuir uma área nua na face entre o segundo e terceiro infraorbitais. A espécie nova se distingue de todas as espécies do subgênero Bryconops pela presença de uma grande mancha negra na base da nadadeira dorsal. Além disto, difere de todas as espécies do gênero, exceto B. inpai, por possuir a nadadeira adiposa inteiramente preta. Difere de B. inpai pela ausência de manchas umerais. Difere de todas as espécies de Bryconops, exceto B. caudomaculatus, por possuir as últimas escamas da série longitudinal de escamas da linha lateral sem poros além da terminação da placa hipural e difere de B. caudomaculatus pelo menor número de escamas com poros da linha lateral (31-36, média 34,6 vs. 37-43 média, 40,6; respectivamente).
