ABSTRACT

Myocastor coypus (coypu or nutria) is considered one of the 100 worst invasive species in the world due to its risk to local wildlife, such as waterfowl, zoonotic risks, and environmental damage, such as riverbank erosion, arising from its habit of constructing burrows along the edge of water bodies. The presence of M. coypus is already known locally in the municipality of Londrina based on records at Igapó Lake. This paper presents the first record of M. coypus in Arthur Thomas Municipal Park, a Conservation Unit of Integral Protection located in the urban area of Londrina. The records were obtained through direct observation of one live individual and one carcass during campaigns to monitor medium and large mammals. Subsequently, ten records were obtained using camera traps, of unknown gender, located near waterbodies. We emphasize the need for continuous fauna monitoring in conservation units to detect and verify potential increases in invasive alien species populations that can result in environmental damage.


A espécie Myocastor coypus (ratão-do-banhado) é considerada uma das 100 piores espécies invasoras do mundo por representar risco para a fauna local, como aves aquáticas, e risco de zoonoses, além de causar danos ambientais, como desbarrancamento de encostas de rios, devido ao seu hábito de construção de tocas nas margens de corpos d'água. A presença de M. coypus já é conhecida localmente no município de Londrina a partir de registros no Lago Igapó. Assim, este estudo apresenta o primeiro registro de M. coypus no Parque Municipal Arthur Thomas, uma Unidade de Conservação de Proteção Integral localizada na zona urbana de Londrina. Os registros foram obtidos através da observação direta de um indivíduo vivo e uma carcaça durante campanhas de monitoramento de mamíferos de médio e grande porte. Posteriormente foram obtidos dez registros por armadilha fotográfica de indivíduos de sexo desconhecido, próximos a corpos d'água. Enfatiza-se a necessidade do monitoramento contínuo da fauna em áreas de conservação para a detecção do potencial aumento na população de espécies exóticas e invasoras que podem causar severos danos ambientais.

ABSTRACT

Capuchins can employ several strategies to deal with environmental challenges, such as using stone tools to access encapsulated resources. Nut-cracking is customary in several capuchin populations and can be affected by ecological and cultural factors; however, data on success and efficiency are only known for two wild populations. In this work, using camera traps, we assessed palm nut-cracking success and efficiency in two newly studied wild bearded capuchin populations (Sapajus libidinosus) and compared them with other sites. We tested the hypothesis that the overall success and efficiency of nut-cracking would be similar between sites when processing similar resources, finding partial support for it. Although using hammerstones of different sizes, capuchins had a similar success frequency. However, efficiency (number of strikes to crack a nut) was different, with one population being more efficient. We also tested whether success and efficiency varied between sexes in adults. We predict adult males would be more successful and efficient when cracking hard nuts. We found no differences between the sexes in one site but found sex differences in the other, although also for the low-resistant nut, which was unexpected. Our data add to the knowledge of capuchin nut-cracking behaviour flexibility, variance and potential cultural traits.

ABSTRACT

Although considered an evolutionary force responsible for shaping ecosystems and biodiversity, fires' natural cycle is being altered by human activities, increasing the odds of destructive megafire events. Here, we show that forest type modulates the responses of terrestrial mammals, from species to assemblage level, to a catastrophic megafire in the Brazilian Pantanal. We unraveled that mammalian richness was higher 1 year after fire passage compared to a pre-fire condition, which can be attributed to habitat modification caused by wildfires, attracting herbivores and open-area tolerant species. We observed changes in assemblage composition between burned/unburned sites, but no difference in mammalian richness or relative abundance. However, by partitioning the effects of burned area proportion per forest type (monospecific vs. polyspecific), we detected differential responses of mammals at several levels of organization, with pronounced declines in species richness and relative abundance in monospecific forests. Eighty-six percent of the species presented moderate to strong negative effects on their relative abundance, with an overall strong negative effect for the entire assemblage. Wildfires are predicted to be more frequent with climate and land use change, and if events analogous to Pantanal-2020 become recurrent, they might trigger regional beta diversity change, benefitting open-area tolerant species.

ABSTRACT

The use of artificial lighting during the incubation phase is a tool that has been studied with the aim of increasing the production rates and hatchability. Using this, this study aims to investigate the effects of the luminous incidence of white and red monochromatic light on the production and metabolism of broiler chicks subjected to low temperatures. A total of 315 eggs of Ross 708 heavy breeders were used. The eggs were distributed randomly, with 35 eggs per tray, totaling 105 eggs per incubator. The treatments were the following: incubation without the use of light; the use of white monochromatic light; and the use of red monochromatic light. The lamps used were of the LED type. The samples were distributed in the factorial completely randomized experimental design with position effect on the tray. Candling, egg weighing, calculating the probability of survival and egg weight loss were performed. Temperatures were recorded using a thermographic camera. At birth, three chicks per tray were euthanized for evaluation: weight with and without yolk residue, gastrointestinal tract biometry, and blood and liver biochemistry. Analyses were performed using the R computational program. It was observed that there was a significant effect of the treatments on the levels of calcium, phosphorus, cholesterol, amylase, glucose, urea and glutamate pyruvate transaminase on the biochemical profile of the blood and on the thermographic temperatures of the eggs; the experiment was kept at low temperatures resulting in thermal stress, with an average temperature of 34.5 °C. Therefore, the use of red and white monochromatic light in the artificial incubation process for brown-colored eggs is not recommended, because in the post-hatching phase, it promoted the metabolism dysregulation on the blood biochemical profile to control the differentiation in the wavelength of traditional incubation.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To evaluate the performance of artificial intelligence (AI) systems embedded in a mobile, handheld retinal camera, with a single retinal image protocol, in detecting both diabetic retinopathy (DR) and more-than-mild diabetic retinopathy (mtmDR). Design: Multicenter cross-sectional diagnostic study, conducted at 3 diabetes care and eye care facilities. Participants: A total of 327 individuals with diabetes mellitus (type 1 or type 2) underwent a retinal imaging protocol enabling expert reading and automated analysis. Methods: Participants underwent fundus photographs using a portable retinal camera (Phelcom Eyer). The captured images were automatically analyzed by deep learning algorithms retinal alteration score (RAS) and diabetic retinopathy alteration score (DRAS), consisting of convolutional neural networks trained on EyePACS data sets and fine-tuned using data sets of portable device fundus images. The ground truth was the classification of DR corresponding to adjudicated expert reading, performed by 3 certified ophthalmologists. Main Outcome Measures: Primary outcome measures included the sensitivity and specificity of the AI system in detecting DR and/or mtmDR using a single-field, macula-centered fundus photograph for each eye, compared with a rigorous clinical reference standard comprising the reading center grading of 2-field imaging protocol using the International Classification of Diabetic Retinopathy severity scale. Results: Of 327 analyzed patients (mean age, 57.0 ± 16.8 years; mean diabetes duration, 16.3 ± 9.7 years), 307 completed the study protocol. Sensitivity and specificity of the AI system were high in detecting any DR with DRAS (sensitivity, 90.48% [95% confidence interval (CI), 84.99%-94.46%]; specificity, 90.65% [95% CI, 84.54%-94.93%]) and mtmDR with the combination of RAS and DRAS (sensitivity, 90.23% [95% CI, 83.87%-94.69%]; specificity, 85.06% [95% CI, 78.88%-90.00%]). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.95 for any DR and 0.89 for mtmDR. Conclusions: This study showed a high accuracy for the detection of DR in different levels of severity with a single retinal photo per eye in an all-in-one solution, composed of a portable retinal camera powered by AI. Such a strategy holds great potential for increasing coverage rates of screening programs, contributing to prevention of avoidable blindness. ABSTRACT

This paper introduces CYCLOPS, an acquisition system developed to capture images and inertial measurement data of moving cyclists from a vehicle. The development of CYCLOPS addresses the need to acquire useful data for training machine learning models capable of predicting the motion intentions of cyclists on urban roads. Considering its application, it is a completely original development. The system consists of two devices. The first device is installed on the bicycle and is based on an electronic acquisition board comprising an inertial measurement unit (IMU), a microcontroller, and a transceiver for sending the cyclist's acceleration and orientation data to a vehicle. The second device is installed on the vehicle and uses the same board architecture to acquire the vehicle's accelerations and orientations, along with an RGB monocular camera. The data is stored in real-time in a laptop's drive for subsequent analysis and manipulation. The hardware architecture is presented in detail, including the designs to install the devices, for IMUs configuration, and software installation on the laptop. ABSTRACT

Nocturnal activity of tropical otters is rarely reported. To date no studies have documented den use by sympatric giant (Pteronura brasiliensis) and neotropical otters (Lontra longicaudis). We used camera-traps to monitor den use by sympatric otters along an equatorial Amazonian river. Camera-traps provided evidence that giant otters were more nocturnal around dens than sympatric neotropical otters. Nocturnal activity was recorded in 11% of giant otter photos (n = 14 of 125 photos), but was recorded only once for neotropical otters. Den use by giant and neotropical otters overlapped spatially and temporally but not concurrently. We hypothesize that previously reported nocturnal activity in neotropical otters is facilitated by the absence or low density of giant otters. Our results also underscore the need to use complementary techniques together with den counts for monitoring otters as sympatric species can use the same dens.

ABSTRACT

Camera traps became the main observational method of a myriad of species over large areas. Data sets from camera traps can be used to describe the patterns and monitor the occupancy, abundance, and richness of wildlife, essential information for conservation in times of rapid climate and land-cover changes. Habitat loss and poaching are responsible for historical population losses of mammals in the Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot, especially for medium to large-sized species. Here we present a data set from camera trap surveys of medium to large-sized native mammals (>1 kg) across the Atlantic Forest. We compiled data from 5380 ground-level camera trap deployments in 3046 locations, from 2004 to 2020, resulting in 43,068 records of 58 species. These data add to existing data sets of mammals in the Atlantic Forest by including dates of camera operation needed for analyses dealing with imperfect detection. We also included, when available, information on important predictors of detection, namely the camera brand and model, use of bait, and obstruction of camera viewshed that can be measured from example pictures at each camera location. Besides its application in studies on the patterns and mechanisms behind occupancy, relative abundance, richness, and detection, the data set presented here can be used to study species' daily activity patterns, activity levels, and spatiotemporal interactions between species. Moreover, data can be used combined with other data sources in the multiple and expanding uses of integrated population modeling. An R script is available to view summaries of the data set. We expect that this data set will be used to advance the knowledge of mammal assemblages and to inform evidence-based solutions for the conservation of the Atlantic Forest. As armadilhas fotográficas tornaram­se o principal método de observação de muitas espécies em grandes áreas. Os dados obtidos com armadilhas fotográficas podem ser usados para descrever os padrões e monitorar a ocupação, abundância e riqueza da vida selvagem, informação essencial para a conservação em tempos de rápidas mudanças climáticas e de cobertura do solo. A perda de habitat e a caça furtiva são responsáveis pelas perdas populacionais históricas de mamíferos no hotspot de biodiversidade da Mata Atlântica, especialmente para espécies de médio e grande porte. Aqui apresentamos um conjunto de dados de levantamentos com armadilhas fotográficas de mamíferos de médio e grande porte (>1 kg) em toda a Mata Atlântica. Compilamos dados de 5.380 armadilhas fotográficas instaladas no nível do chão em 3.046 locais, de 2004 a 2020, resultando em 43.068 registros de 58 espécies. Esses dados acrescentam aos conjuntos de dados existentes de mamíferos na Mata Atlântica por incluir as datas de operação das câmeras, que são necessárias para análises que lidam com detecção imperfeita. Também incluímos, quando disponíveis, informações sobre importantes preditores de detecção, como marca e modelo da câmera, uso de isca e obstrução do visor da câmera que pode ser medido a partir de imagens de exemplo em cada local da câmera. Além de estudos sobre os padrões e mecanismos por trás da ocupação, abundância relativa, riqueza e detecção, o conjunto de dados aqui apresentado pode ser usado para estudar os padrões de atividade diária das espécies, nível de atividade e interações espaço­temporais entre as espécies. Além disso, os dados podem ser usados em combinação com outras fontes de dados em diversas análises com modelagem populacional integrada. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: the use of 3D cameras for gait analysis has been highly questioned due to the low accuracy they have demonstrated in the past. The objective of the study presented in this paper is to improve the accuracy of the estimations made by robot-mounted 3D cameras in human gait analysis by applying a supervised learning stage. METHODS: the 3D camera was mounted in a mobile robot to obtain a longer walking distance. This study shows an improvement in detection of kinematic gait signals and gait descriptors by post-processing the raw estimations of the camera using artificial neural networks trained with the data obtained from a certified Vicon system. To achieve this, 37 healthy participants were recruited and data of 207 gait sequences were collected using an Orbbec Astra 3D camera. There are two basic possible approaches for training and both have been studied in order to see which one achieves a better result. The artificial neural network can be trained either to obtain more accurate kinematic gait signals or to improve the gait descriptors obtained after initial processing. The former seeks to improve the waveforms of kinematic gait signals by reducing the error and increasing the correlation with respect to the Vicon system. The second is a more direct approach, focusing on training the artificial neural networks using gait descriptors directly. RESULTS: the accuracy of the 3D camera to objectify human gait was measured before and after training. In both training approaches, a considerable improvement was observed. Kinematic gait signals showed lower errors and higher correlations with respect to the ground truth. The accuracy of the system to detect gait descriptors also showed a substantial improvement, mostly for kinematic descriptors rather than spatio-temporal. When comparing both training approaches, it was not possible to define which was the absolute best. CONCLUSIONS: supervised learning improves the accuracy of 3D cameras but the selection of the training approach will depend on the purpose of the study to be conducted. This study reveals the great potential of 3D cameras and encourages the research community to continue exploring their use in gait analysis.

ABSTRACT

Global warming is influenced by an increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) concentration in the atmosphere. Consequently, Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE) is the main factor that influences the exchange of carbon (C) between the atmosphere and the soil. As a result, agricultural ecosystems are a potential carbon dioxide (CO2) sink, particularly rice paddies (Oryza sativa). Therefore, a static chamber with a portable CO2 analyzer was designed and implemented for three rice plots to monitor CO2 emissions. Furthermore, a weather station was installed to record meteorological variables. The vegetative, reproductive, and maturation phases of the crop lasted 95, 35, and 42 days post-sowing (DPS), respectively. In total, the crop lasted 172 DPS. Diurnal NEE had the highest CO2 absorption capacity at 10:00 a.m. for the tillering stage (82 and 89 DPS), floral primordium (102 DPS), panicle initiation (111 DPS), and flowering (126 DPS). On the other hand, the maximum CO2 emission at 82, 111, and 126 DPS occurred at 6:00 p.m. At 89 and 102 DPS, it occurred at 4:00 and 6:00 a.m., respectively. NEE in the vegetative stage was -25 µmolCO2 m2 s-1, and in the reproductive stage, it was -35 µmolCO2 m2 s-1, indicating the highest absorption capacity of the plots. The seasonal dynamics of NEE were mainly controlled by the air temperature inside the chamber (Tc) (R = -0.69), the relative humidity inside the chamber (RHc) (R = -0.66), and net radiation (Rn) (R = -0.75). These results are similar to previous studies obtained via chromatographic analysis and eddy covariance (EC), which suggests that the portable analyzer could be an alternative for CO2 monitoring.

ABSTRACT

The expectation for communication systems beyond 5G/6G is to provide high reliability, high throughput, low latency, and high energy efficiency services. The integration between systems based on radio frequency (RF) and visible light communication (VLC) promises the design of hybrid systems capable of addressing and largely satisfying these requirements. Hybrid network design enables complementary cooperation without interference between the two technologies, thereby increasing the overall system data rate, improving load balancing, and reducing non-coverage areas. VLC/RF hybrid networks can offer reliable and efficient communication solutions for Internet of Things (IoT) applications such as smart lighting, location-based services, home automation, smart healthcare, and industrial IoT. Therefore, hybrid VLC/RF networks are key technologies for next-generation communication systems. In this paper, a comprehensive state-of-the-art study of hybrid VLC/RF networks is carried out, divided into four areas. First, indoor scenarios are studied considering lighting requirements, hybrid channel models, load balancing, resource allocation, and hybrid network topologies. Second, the characteristics and implementation of these hybrid networks in outdoor scenarios with adverse conditions are analyzed. Third, we address the main applications of hybrid VLC/RF networks in technological, economic, and socio-environmental domains. Finally, we outline the main challenges and future research lines of hybrid VLC/RF networks.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the automotive industry has led to the development of intelligent systems focused on road safety, aiming to improve protection for drivers and pedestrians worldwide to reduce the number of accidents yearly. One of the most critical functions of these systems is pedestrian detection, as it is crucial for the safety of everyone involved in road traffic. However, pedestrian detection goes beyond the front of the vehicle; it is also essential to consider the vehicle's rear since pedestrian collisions occur when the car is in reverse drive. To contribute to the solution of this problem, this research proposes a model based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) using a proposed one-dimensional architecture and the Inception V3 architecture to fuse the information from the backup camera and the distance measured by the ultrasonic sensors, to detect pedestrians when the vehicle is reversing. In addition, specific data collection was performed to build a database for the research. The proposed model showed outstanding results with 99.85% accuracy and 99.86% correct classification performance, demonstrating that it is possible to achieve the goal of pedestrian detection using CNN by fusing two types of data.

ABSTRACT Facultative kleptoparasites face the risk of trying to steal food resources from competitors. This type of interaction is little known, but anecdotal observations indicate that birds of prey may take advantage of their accurate sight to detect the best opportunities for kleptoparasitism. We recorded a camera trap video of an attempt of kleptoparasitism by the white hawk, Pseudastur albicollis, that tried to steal food from a greater grison, Galictis vittata, in a recently selectively-logged forest site in central Brazilian Amazonia. The attempt was unsuccessful as the greater grison responded aggressively to the attack. The event occurred in a linear clearing, which may have increased the bird's ability to detect its potential host. Kleptoparasitic interactions are difficult to detect in forest environments. Recording opportunistic kleptoparasitic interactions in tropical forests may not only depend on the increasing use of camera traps, but also on habitat conditions that facilitate the detection of potential hosts.


RESUMO Cleptoparasitas facultativos enfrentam os custos envolvidos no roubo do alimento em troca da compensação pelo valor nutricional do item roubado. Essa interação é pouco conhecida, mas observações anedóticas indicam que aves de rapina podem se beneficiar de sua visão acurada para cleptoparasitar. Reportamos uma tentativa de cleptoparasitismo de um furão-grande, Galictis vittata, por um gavião-branco, Pseudastur albicollis, em uma floresta na Amazônia central brasileira recentemente manejada para corte seletivo de impacto reduzido. Como o furão-grande respondeu agressivamente ao ataque, a tentativa de roubo falhou. O evento foi registrado por uma armadilha fotográfica em uma clareira linear. O ambiente mais aberto pode ter aumentado a habilidade do gavião-branco em encontrar o seu hospedeiro. Eventos de cleptoparasitismo são dificilmente registrados em ambientes florestais. Registros de cleptoparasitismo em florestas tropicais podem não depender apenas do uso intensivo de armadilhas fotográficas, mas também de condições ambientais favoráveis à detecção de possíveis hospedeiros pelo cleptoparasita.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a control approach for reconfigurable parallel robots is designed. Based on it, controls in the vision-sensor, 3D and joint spaces are designed and implemented in target tracking tasks in a novel reconfigurable delta-type parallel robot. No a priori information about the target trajectory is required. Robot reconfiguration can be used to overcome some of the limitations of parallel robots like small relative workspace or multiple singularities, at the cost of increasing the complexity of the manipulator, making its control design even more challenging. No general control methodology exists for reconfigurable parallel robots. Tracking objects with unknown trajectories is a challenging task required in many applications. Sensor-based robot control has been actively used for this type of task. However, it cannot be straightforwardly extended to reconfigurable parallel manipulators. The developed vision-sensor space control is inspired by, and can be seen as an extension of, the Velocity Linear Camera Model-Camera Space Manipulation (VLCM-CSM) methodology. Several experiments were carried out on a reconfigurable delta-type parallel robot. An average positioning error of 0.6 mm was obtained for static objectives. Tracking errors of 2.5 mm, 3.9 mm and 11.5 mm were obtained for targets moving along a linear trajectory at speeds of 6.5, 9.3 and 12.7 cm/s, respectively. The control cycle time was 16 ms. These results validate the proposed approach and improve upon previous works for non-reconfigurable robots.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of blindness. Our objective was to evaluate the performance of an artificial intelligence (AI) system integrated into a handheld smartphone-based retinal camera for DR screening using a single retinal image per eye. METHODS: Images were obtained from individuals with diabetes during a mass screening program for DR in Blumenau, Southern Brazil, conducted by trained operators. Automatic analysis was conducted using an AI system (EyerMaps™, Phelcom Technologies LLC, Boston, USA) with one macula-centered, 45-degree field of view retinal image per eye. The results were compared to the assessment by a retinal specialist, considered as the ground truth, using two images per eye. Patients with ungradable images were excluded from the analysis. RESULTS: A total of 686 individuals (average age 59.2 ± 13.3 years, 56.7% women, diabetes duration 12.1 ± 9.4 years) were included in the analysis. The rates of insulin use, daily glycemic monitoring, and systemic hypertension treatment were 68.4%, 70.2%, and 70.2%, respectively. Although 97.3% of patients were aware of the risk of blindness associated with diabetes, more than half of them underwent their first retinal examination during the event. The majority (82.5%) relied exclusively on the public health system. Approximately 43.4% of individuals were either illiterate or had not completed elementary school. DR classification based on the ground truth was as follows: absent or nonproliferative mild DR 86.9%, more than mild (mtm) DR 13.1%. The AI system achieved sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value percentages (95% CI) for mtmDR as follows: 93.6% (87.8-97.2), 71.7% (67.8-75.4), 42.7% (39.3-46.2), and 98.0% (96.2-98.9), respectively. The area under the ROC curve was 86.4%. CONCLUSION: The portable retinal camera combined with AI demonstrated high sensitivity for DR screening using only one image per eye, offering a simpler protocol compared to the traditional approach of two images per eye. Simplifying the DR screening process could enhance adherence rates and overall program coverage.

ABSTRACT

Background: In 131I therapies internal dosimetry is crucial for determining the mean absorbed dose to organs at risk, particularly the bone marrow, which has a dose constraint of 2 Gy. Traditionally, multicompartmental models have been used for bone marrow dosimetry, necessitating whole-body absorbed-dose assessments. However, noninvasive techniques, such as γ-camera scans or ceiling-mounted Geiger-Müller (GM) counters, can estimate the aforementioned. This study was aimed to evaluate the agreement between whole-body mean absorbed dose using γ-camera scans and ceiling-mounted GM in patients with thyroid carcinoma undergoing 131I therapy. Methods: This study included 31 patients with thyroid cancer who were treated with 131I. The whole-body time-integrated activity (TIA) and mean absorbed dose were estimated using the elimination curves obtained with γ-camera scans and ceiling-mounted GM. In addition, statistical analysis was performed on the data to determine the Coefficient Correlation Coefficient and the Bland-Altman limits of agreement for both parameters, as well as for the elimination curves' effective half-life. Results: The study revealed correlations of 0.562 and 0.586 between whole-body TIA and mean absorbed dose, respectively. The Bland-Altman limits of agreement were found to be below -3.75% and within 12.75% of the bone marrow dose constraint of 2 Gy. The nonparametric evaluation revealed that whole-body TIA and mean absorbed dose medians from GM were lower than those from γ-camera scans (p < 0.001). Effective half-life estimation mean was significantly lower in the GM than in the γ-camera of 13 and 23 h. Conclusions: Although GM calculates the whole-body absorbed dose with margins of error within clinical acceptance, underestimation of the effective half-life makes it an unacceptable substitute method for γ-cameras in clinical practice. Further research should be conducted to evaluate single-point GM measurement substitutions in time-activity curves.

ABSTRACT

Nurse plants provide benefits during the early life cycle of the protected plant by reducing the intensity of stressful abiotic conditions. However, nurse plants may influence frugivore visitation and consumption, affecting the initial benefits of this interaction and generating different frugivory patterns during the reproductive phase of the protégé. Despite the importance of nurse plants and frugivory in the structure and composition of ecosystems, they have rarely been evaluated together, and frugivory patterns caused by nurse plants at different spatial and temporal scales are mostly unknown. Pilosocereus leucocephalus produces seeds that are endozoochorically dispersed by birds and mammals, can establish in open spaces devoid of arboreal vegetation (OS), and is associated with the nurse tree Lysiloma acapulcensis. However, the influence of L. acapulcensis on the frugivory patterns of P. leucocephalus is unknown. Therefore, during the fruiting season of P. leucocephalus of 2018, we recorded the visitation rates, effective removal, and removal timescales in 26 individuals located in OS and 15 under L. acapulcensis. Our results indicate that L. acapulcensis increased visits by Euphonia hirundinacea and bats but decreased those of Psilorhinus morio and Campylorhynchus rufinucha. Although L. acapulcensis did not generate differences in fruit removal effectiveness, bats showed the highest effectiveness in OS, followed by birds. L. acapulcensis also had an effect on the fruit removal periods of different frugivorous species at different temporal scales. This shows that the nurse tree generated a complex pattern of frugivory in P. leucocephalus, mainly increasing the initial benefits of the nurse-protégé interaction.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: This study aims to compare the performance of a handheld fundus camera (Eyer) and standard tabletop fundus cameras (Visucam 500, Visucam 540, and Canon CR-2) for diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema screening. METHODS: This was a multicenter, cross-sectional study that included images from 327 individuals with diabetes. The participants underwent pharmacological mydriasis and fundus photography in two fields (macula and optic disk centered) with both strategies. All images were acquired by trained healthcare professionals, de-identified, and graded independently by two masked ophthalmologists, with a third senior ophthalmologist adjudicating in discordant cases. The International Classification of Diabetic Retinopathy was used for grading, and demographic data, diabetic retinopathy classification, artifacts, and image quality were compared between devices. The tabletop senior ophthalmologist adjudication label was used as the ground truth for comparative analysis. A univariate and stepwise multivariate logistic regression was performed to determine the relationship of each independent factor in referable diabetic retinopathy. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 57.03 years (SD 16.82, 9-90 years), and the mean duration of diabetes was 16.35 years (SD 9.69, 1-60 years). Age (P = .005), diabetes duration (P = .004), body mass index (P = .005), and hypertension (P < .001) were statistically different between referable and non-referable patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed a positive association between male sex (OR 1.687) and hypertension (OR 3.603) with referable diabetic retinopathy. The agreement between devices for diabetic retinopathy classification was 73.18%, with a weighted kappa of 0.808 (almost perfect). The agreement for macular edema was 88.48%, with a kappa of 0.809 (almost perfect). For referable diabetic retinopathy, the agreement was 85.88%, with a kappa of 0.716 (substantial), sensitivity of 0.906, and specificity of 0.808. As for image quality, 84.02% of tabletop fundus camera images were gradable and 85.31% of the Eyer images were gradable. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that the handheld retinal camera Eyer performed comparably to standard tabletop fundus cameras for diabetic retinopathy and macular edema screening. The high agreement with tabletop devices, portability, and low costs makes the handheld retinal camera a promising tool for increasing coverage of diabetic retinopathy screening programs, particularly in low-income countries. Early diagnosis and treatment have the potential to prevent avoidable blindness, and the present validation study brings evidence that supports its contribution to diabetic retinopathy early diagnosis and treatment.

Este trabajo documenta el primer registro de anomalías cromáticas en el pecarí de collar (Pecari tajacu) y el tercero en el mapache (Procyon lotor) para México. Los hallazgos se realizaron durante el monitoreo realizado entre el 2009 y el 2021, utilizando cámaras-trampa, principalmente en la ecorregión de la Sierra Madre del Sur del estado de Guerrero, México. Procyon lotor fue registrado entre el 5 de noviembre y el 1 de diciembre de 2019, en vegetación riparia de bosque tropical caducifolio (17°47'35"N, 98°39'59"W, 1134 m de altitud). Mientras que Pecari tajacu se registró el 7 de junio y el 22 de julio del 2021 en una brecha saca cosecha abandonada (17°38'12"N, 100°40'50"W; 1532 m de altitud).


This paper documents the first record of chromatic anomalies in Collared Peccary (Pecari tajacu) and the third in the Raccoon (Procyon lotor) for Mexico. The findings were made during monitoring conducted between 2009 and 2021, using camera traps, primarily in the Sierra Madre del Sur ecoregion of the state of Guerrero, Mexico. ABSTRACT

Jaguars and pumas are top-predator species in the Neotropics that are threatened by habitat destruction, illegal poaching of their body parts and their favored prey, and by the human-wildlife conflicts that arise when predators attack livestock. Much of the remaining felid habitat in the Americas is in protected nature reserves that are too small and isolated to support local populations. Surrounding forests therefore play a vital role in felid conservation. Successful long-term conservation of these two felids requires evidence-based knowledge of their biological and ecological requirements. We studied population distributions of jaguars and pumas and their prey in and between two small, private reserves of the Northern Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, with areas of 25 and 43 km2. During 2 years of camera trapping (2015 and 2016), we detected 21 jaguars, from which we estimated an average space requirement of 28-45 km2/individual. Dietary niche overlap exceeded random expectation. The most frequently occurring prey items in jaguar and puma diets were collared peccary and deer. Jaguar also favored nine-banded armadillos and white-nosed coati, while puma favored canids. Both felids avoided ocellated turkey. Overall, diet of jaguars was less species-rich, but similar in niche breadth, to that of pumas. A fluid use of space by both species, in 2015 tending toward mutual attraction and in 2016 toward partial exclusion of pumas by jaguars, combined with the high dietary overlap, is consistent with a dominance hierarchy facilitating coexistence. Jaguars and pumas favor the same prey as the people in local communities who hunt, which likely will intensify human-wildlife impacts when prey become scarce. We conclude that even small reserves play an important role in increasing the continuity of habitat for prey and large felids, whose generalist habits suppress interspecific competition for increasingly limiting prey that are largely shared between them and humans.


Los jaguares y pumas son las principales especies depredadoras del Neotrópico. Se encuentran amenazados por la destrucción de su hábitat, la caza furtiva de sus partes corporales, así como de sus presas favoritas, y por los impactos entre humanos y vida silvestre que surgen cuando estas especies atacan al ganado. Gran parte del hábitat protegido de los felinos restante en las Américas lo constituyen reservas naturales que son demasiado pequeñas y aisladas para por sí mismas sustentar las poblaciones locales de estas especies. Por lo tanto, los bosques circundantes juegan un papel vital para la conservación de estos felinos. La conservación exitosa a largo plazo de estas dos especies de felinos necesita conocimiento basado en evidencia de sus requerimientos biológicos y ecológicos. Estudiamos la distribución de poblaciones de jaguares y pumas, y sus presas, en dos pequeñas áreas protegidas privadas del norte de la península de Yucatán, México, con áreas de 25 y 43 km2, y en el área no protegida de 250 km2 que se encuentra entre ellas. Durante un estudio de foto-trampeo de dos años (2015 y 2016), detectamos 21 jaguares, a partir de los cuales estimamos requerimientos espaciales de 28­45 km2/individuo en promedio. La superposición entre nichos alimentarios superó las expectativas aleatorias. Las presas más frecuentes en las dietas del jaguar y el puma fueron el pecarí de collar y los venados. El jaguar también favoreció al armadillo de nueve bandas y coatí de nariz blanca, mientras que el puma favoreció a los cánidos. Ambos felinos evitaron al pavo ocelado. En general, la dieta de los jaguares presentó menor riqueza específica, pero similar amplitud de nicho a la de los pumas. Un uso fluido del espacio por parte de ambas especies hizo que en un año tendieran a tener atracción mutua y en otro a una exclusión parcial por parte de los jaguares a los pumas, lo cual, en combinación con la alta superposición alimentaria, es consistente con una jerarquía de dominancia que facilita la convivencia. Los jaguares y los pumas favorecieron las mismas presas que la gente que caza en las comunidades locales, lo que probablemente intensificará los impactos entre humanos y vida silvestre cuando las presas escaseen. Concluimos que incluso las reservas pequeñas desempeñan un papel importante en el aumento de la continuidad del hábitat para presas y grandes felinos, cuyos hábitos generalistas suprimen la competencia inter-específica por presas cada vez más limitadas que en gran parte comparten con los humanos.
