ABSTRACT

In this study, we examine the prevalence of income and career concerns among emerging adults in three different welfare states during COVID-19: Finland (n = 309), Sweden (n = 324), and the United Kingdom (n = 343). This study also delves into how factors such as one's self-perceived financial situation, generalized mistrust, loneliness and socio-demographics are related to emerging adults' income and career concerns. Results showed that individuals from the United Kingdom were more likely to experience increased income and career concerns than those in Finland and Sweden. Our results also suggest that income concerns were associated with one's current financial situation, future financial situation, childhood financial situation, and loneliness. Also, career concerns were related to generalized mistrust, loneliness, and age. For both country-specific and general analyses, loneliness emerged as the most important for increased income and career concerns for emerging adults in all three countries.

ABSTRACT

This study examines the impact of financial redundancy on corporate social responsibility (CSR) based on a sample of Chinese listed firms from 2010 to 2020. The results indicate that financial redundancy has a significant positive effect on CSR. However, financially redundant resources are not balanced in terms of how they encourage firms to undertake different dimensions of social responsibility; specifically, firms actively take social responsibility toward shareholders and the public but take less responsibility for employees and the environment. The incentive for firms with financially redundant resources to promote CSR initiatives is attributable to their high level of social awareness and pursuit of reputation. Consistent with their motives, our economic consequence analysis reveals that the incremental effect of CSR driven by financial redundancy improves corporate reputation but has no enhancement effect on corporate performance. Finally, our extended analysis reveals that the relative impact of financial redundancy on CSR depends on several organizational variables that influence a firm's preferences for CSR investments. The positive impact of financial redundancy on CSR is stronger among firms with high managerial career concerns and firms in regions with high market competition. This research provides a necessary structure for future CSR studies to follow. By delving deeply into the relationship between financial redundancy and CSR, it enables scholars to better address the critical management question of whether wealthy firms do more good for society compared to those that are less wealthy.

ABSTRACT

Whether authority decentralization can strengthen the effort of local governments to reduce environmental pollution is theoretically and practically important. Based on a reform of delegating power of organizing marathon games from central to local governments in China, this paper finds that air quality during the days of marathon games improves significantly after decentralization. Such results pass a series of robustness checks. Moreover, we find that the improvement of air quality during marathon games after authority decentralization have close relationship with official promotion incentives, local political cycles and the career concerns of prefectural secretaries and mayors.

ABSTRACT

This study uncovers a new finding on the impact of CEO tenure on corporate social and environmental performance (CS&EP) in coastal and non-coastal areas of China using fixed-effect panel data regression models. The Two-Stage Least Squares instrumental panel regression is used to validate the veracity of the empirical results. To this end, we extract data from all non-financial Chinese listed firms for the period of 2009 to 2015. By applying the multivariant framework, the findings of the study exhibit a negative and significant effect of CEO tenure on CS&EP. Moreover, this study shows that firms with head offices in coastal areas of China tend to weaken the negative impact of CEO tenure on CS&EP, indicating that CS&EP is more focused in coastal areas of China than non-coastal ones. The findings suggest that the increase in CEOs' CS&EP in the early years of their service tenure tends to increase their compensation packages. This study is useful for policymakers to link CS&EP with firm economic practices to attain sustainable development objectives.

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to study career concerns within a sample of 51 adults aged between 25 and 42 years old who requested help in career counseling and management. Participants were in several situations (studying, looking for job, unemployed or employed) and needed help concerning career choices. The instrument used was the "Adult Career Concerns Inventory". It measures the degree of concern expressed for the major development tasks, presented in stages and sub-stages, defined by Donald Super`s Career Development Model. The results show that adults have relevant concerns for other stages and sub-stages besides the one correspondent to their age group, which may be due to nowadays labor market. Some final considerations are made, such as the contribution of this exploratory study on career concerns in career counseling practice and in individuals' career planning.
