ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Career maturity is a crucial indicator of career preparedness and unpreparedness can cause the turnover of new nurses. Considerable empirical work demonstrates the potential associations between specialty identity, self-efficacy, study engagement, and career maturity. This study aimed to explore the mediation role of self-efficacy and study engagement on the relationships between specialty identity and career maturity among Chinese nursing students. METHODS: Four hundred twenty-six Chinese nursing students were recruited between September 11 and October 30, 2022. The online survey was conducted following the CHERRIES checklist. Electronic questionnaires assessed their perceived specialty identity, self-efficacy, study engagement, and career maturity. The descriptive analysis, Harman single-factor analysis, Pearson correlation tests, structural equation modeling, and the bootstrap method were employed in data analysis. RESULTS: Bivariate correlation analysis identified a positive correlation between specialty identity, self-efficacy, study engagement, and career maturity (r = 0.276-0.440, P < 0.001). Self-efficacy and study engagement partially mediated the relationship between specialty identity and career maturity. Self-efficacy and study engagement played a chain mediating role between specialty identity and career maturity. CONCLUSIONS: The underlying mechanism can explain the relationships between specialty identity and career maturity: a direct predictor and an indirect effect through self-efficacy and study engagement. Policymakers and educators should emphasize the importance of specialty identity and provide tailored strategies for improving care maturity depending on nursing students' specialty identity, self-efficacy, study engagement in the early stages of career development.

ABSTRACT

This study explored the mediating effect of career maturity moderated by intimacy with parents and immigration backgrounds (native- or foreign-born young adults) on the relationship between perceived marginalization and the mental health of young adults with migration backgrounds (having mixed parentage of one Korean and one non-Korean immigrant parent) in South Korea. We collected data from 300 adults aged 25-34 with migration backgrounds (204 born in Korea and 96 born abroad) through the Gallup Research Institute of Korea and conducted a moderated-moderated mediation analysis using Model 21 of PROCESS Macro in SPSS. The analysis showed that career maturity moderated by intimacy with parents and migration backgrounds mediated the relationship between perceived marginalization and mental health. However, the results were only significant for participants who were born abroad and immigrated to Korea, and not for those who were born in Korea. These findings suggest that while greater perceived marginalization leads to lower career maturity and negatively impacts the mental health of foreign-born young adults, higher levels of intimacy with parents can buffer these negative effects.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: With the slowdown of economic growth and the increasing pressure of employment competition worldwide during the normalized epidemic prevention and control, the job-hunting intention and behavior of college graduates deserve in-depth study. This study explores the relationship between the career maturity, psychological separation and occupational self-efficacy of postgraduates, and provides a theoretical basis for improving their career maturity. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was carried out on postgraduates with 584 valid data in China by using the Career Maturity Scale, Psychological Separation Scale and the Occupational Self-efficacy Scale. A structural equation model and bias-corrected self-sampling method were adopted to explore their relationship. The moderating effect of registered residence type was tested. RESULTS: The results show that: (1) The higher the level of psychological separation of postgraduates, the higher their career maturity. (2) Occupational self-efficacy plays a mediating role in the process of psychological separation promoting career maturity. (3) The registered residence type moderates the latter half of the mediating process of psychological separation, occupational self-efficacy, and career maturity. Moreover, occupational self-efficacy plays a more significant role in promoting the career maturity of postgraduates with rural registered residence. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals the relationship between the career maturity, psychological separation and occupational self-efficacy of postgraduates. At the same time, it also verifies the mediating role of occupational self-efficacy and the moderating role of registered residence type. The result is helpful for postgraduates to understand the level of their career maturity and improve their career decision-making level and career development ability.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Family communication quality is an influential factor of career maturity; however, very few studies have investigated the internal mechanisms underlying the relation between family communication quality and career maturity. This study investigated the mediating effect of time perspective on this relation, explored adolescents' time perspective profiles, and examined the relationships among family communication quality, career maturity, and time perspective profiles. Methods: In this one-year interval longitudinal study, adolescents (67.19% girls; aged 16.10-24.09 years; n = 442) reported parent-adolescent communication quality and time perspective at Time 1 and career maturity at Time 2. Results: The results showed that family communication quality positively predicted adolescents' career maturity, and this relation was mediated by adolescents' Present Fatalistic and Future time perspectives. Additionally, this study identified four time perspective profiles: balanced, moderate, negative, and risk-taking. We further examined how these time perspective profiles are associated with family communication quality and career maturity. The results showed that adolescents' perceptions of high-quality communication with their parents promoted them to endorse a balanced time perspective profile and protected them from endorsing a negative time perspective profile. Moreover, adolescents with a balanced time perspective profile exhibited better development in terms of career maturity, whereas those with a negative time perspective profile reported poor development in terms of career maturity. Conclusion: Present Fatalistic and Future time perspectives mediated the association between parent-adolescent communication quality and career maturity. Additionally, adolescents who engaged in high-quality communication with parents were more likely to endorse the balanced time perspective profile and less likely to adopt the negative time perspective profile; these adolescents were also more likely to achieve higher levels of career maturity. These findings highlight the necessity of improving parent-adolescent communication quality and guiding adolescents to establish a balanced time perspective profile with the goal of promoting adolescents' career maturity.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the influencing mechanism underlying the relationship between the fear of COVID-19 and Chinese international high school students' career maturity by investigating the mediating role of the intolerance of uncertainty. The results indicated that the fear of COVID-19 and the intolerance of uncertainty are negatively associated with international high school students' career maturity. Moreover, intolerance of uncertainty plays a mediating role in the relationship between the fear of COVID-19 and career maturity. The findings contribute to the literature on mental health and have important practical implications for international high school students' mental health and career development.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: For medical school students, specialty choice after graduation significantly impacts their future doctor life. Several Korean medical schools have made efforts to prepare career development programs. However, career support programs based on the systematic analysis of medical school students' first to the final year are still lacking. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the students' career preparation of one medical school in Korea using the Career Maturity Inventory (CMI) and Specialty Indecision Scale (SIS) and to explore the relationship between CMI and SIS variables. METHODS: From December 2020 to July 2021, we conducted an online survey of 600 students in years 1 to 4 at Seoul National University College of Medicine. We analyzed the differences between the years of the students through one-way analysis of variance of the CMI and SIS and the relationship between the two instruments by correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: A total of 198 students completed the survey. The average scores of the CMI variables tended to increase as the year of study went up, and the confidence score of the 1st year students was significantly lower than that of the 2nd and 4th year students. Although there was almost no consistent decrease by year in the SIS variables, 3rd and 4th year students showed significantly lower readiness scores than 1st year students. Additionally, we found that the CMI variables mostly had a negative effect on the SIS variables. CONCLUSION: There is an increasing tendency for career maturity by year of study in Korean medical school students. However, looking at the SIS results, the career concerns vary among the students. Therefore, medical schools can effectively use the SIS to identify the career concerns of students.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The career maturity of nursing students has an influence on their individual career choices and their personal career development trajectory. Psychological resilience and a positive professional self-concept might help students adjust and adapt to their nursing careers. Therefore, there is a growing need to assess and develop these psychological concepts among nursing students. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the levels of career maturity, psychological resilience, and professional self-concept among Chinese senior nursing students as well as to examine the relationships between the variables. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out across six undergraduate medical colleges in China from May to August 2021. A total of 1223 full-time final year undergraduate nursing students who fulfilled the study criteria were recruited using the universal sampling method. Self-administered questionnaires including the Career Maturity Scale (CMS), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-2 (CD-RISC2), and Professional Self-Concept of Nurses Instrument (PSCNI) were used for data collection. For results reporting, the study complied with the STROBE checklist. RESULTS: The participants' career maturity, professional self-concept, and psychological resilience were found to be at moderate levels. Experience of being a class leader and actively choosing a nursing major were factors that had significant influence on students' career maturity, professional self-concept, and psychological resilience. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed career maturity to be closely related to professional self-concept and psychological resilience (p < 0.01). Results of structural equation modelling analyses revealed a good fit to the data based on various fit indices (χ2/df = 6.18, GFI = 0.926, CFI = 0.915, IFI = 0.957, RMSEA = 0.058). Nursing students with positive professional self-concepts demonstrated higher psychological resilience, which in turn influenced their career maturity. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study provide the initial indications for an extended career maturity model. A positive professional self-concept and psychological resilience has the potential to improve the career maturity of nursing students. The study findings provide a basis for nursing educators to focus on improving the professional self-concept and psychological resilience of nursing students.

ABSTRACT

Academic achievement and career maturity are closely related, but an understanding of the causal direction is lacking. The purpose of this study was to analyze the causal relationship between career maturity and academic achievement using autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. This study analyzed the data of 888 adolescents (mean age = 15.90) from the Youth Panel Survey. Autoregressive modeling indicates that academic achievement and career maturity remained stable over time. Higher academic achievement at a previous time point was associated with higher academic achievement at the next time point and similarly for career maturity. Moreover, as a result of cross-lagged effects, academic achievement at one time had a positive effect on career maturity at the next time point, while career maturity at one time had a positive impact on academic achievement at the next time point. In other words, there was a bidirectional effect between academic achievement and career maturity. This study implies that researchers and educators should consider career maturity as well as academic achievement for career guidance.

ABSTRACT

This research adopts the career maturity as an indicator of one's intention and ability in career development, and explores whether and how psychological separation from parents and occupational self-efficacy influence one's career maturity. A structural equation model is constructed and tested with data from a survey of 584 master graduates in top universities across China. According to the study, it is founded that: (1) The psychological separation and occupational self-efficacy of master graduates are significantly and positively correlated with occupational self-efficacy, and career maturity, respectively. (2) Occupational self-efficacy plays a part of the mediating role between psychological separation and career maturity. (3) Master graduates with a high degree of psychological separation are more confident in achieving their career goals, more involved in the career selection process and have a higher level of career development. These findings will arouse the attention of the society to the master graduates' career maturity to some extent.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Career education in nursing can affect career search efficacy, career preparation behavior, career maturity, perception of the nursing profession, and decision-making style. Reflection is essential for an in-depth approach to learning, and plays an important role in professional practice as well as in improving learning. PURPOSE: The aim is to investigate the effects of a self-reflection-focused career course, and what could improve a self-reflection-focused career course. METHODS: An explanatory sequential mixed methods design was used. The career search efficacy, career maturity, and career adaptability were measured three times in both the experimental and the control group. After the class ended, a focus group interview was conducted with the students in the experimental group. RESULTS: The quantitative results suggested that the self-reflection focused career course was more effective on career adaptability than the general career course (F = 4.60, p < .001). The qualitative findings supported the quantitative results and also provided new information, in which nursing students became acquainted with themselves through the self-reflection-focused career course, developed a positive mind about nursing, had realized that they were well-connected to nursing care, and that they would prepare the future nurse. CONCLUSION: The self-reflection-focused career course was effective tools in the career development of nursing students.

ABSTRACT

Objective: For nursing students, career maturity -an individual's readiness to cope with career development tasks and make age-appropriate career decisions- is an essential factor influencing their desire to continue the job after qualifying as a nurse. Although job security as motivation to become a nurse might influence the career maturity of nursing students, it has not been demonstrated. In this study I aimed to elucidate the correlation between job security as motivation and career maturity among Japanese nursing students. Patients and Methods: This study was conducted in 2012, through an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire, on 237 Japanese nursing students. Data on career maturity, job security as motivation, and personal characteristics were collected followed by data analysis using multiple regression. Results: Job security as motivation ("A nursing job is not affected by the economic climate") was significantly correlated with career maturity (ß = -0.29; p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that being motivated by job security negatively affects career maturity. Hence, at an early stage, basic nursing educators should identify nursing students with low career maturity by assessing whether they are motivated by job security, and if so, efficiently providing support to improve their career maturity.

ABSTRACT

This article was migrated. The article was marked as recommended. Introduction: Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) is used to determine the most suitable candidates for the medical profession. It is also important to ensure students have the career maturity necessary to cope with the developmental tasks associated with medical training. This study explored if students stronger in their career decision of medicine perform better on the MMI. Methods: 119 students (72% response rate) completed a career maturity measure. Student MMI scores were matched to career maturity responses. Results: A significant positive correlation (p <.05) existed between MMI score and specify physician as a career preference (r =.177, N =112, p <.031). There was no significant correlation with the MMI score and crystalize a career preference (r =.046, N =119, p =.31) or implement physician as career choice (r =.039, N =114, p =.34). Mean scores for both crystalize career preference ( M = 18.91) and implement physician as career choice ( M = 17.46) indicate that students performing lower on the MMI continue coping with those tasks as compared to specify (M=20.65). Conclusion: Findings suggest a relation between medical student's career maturity and interview performance as measured using the MMI, with students in the intermediate stages of career development having higher MMI scores.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This study attempted to investigate the influence of proactive personality on career indecision and career maturity, and to examine the moderating effects of affect spin. The author administered proactive personality, career indecision, and career maturity scales to 70 college students. Affect spin was calculated using the day reconstruction method, wherein participants evaluated their affective experiences by using 20 affective terms at the same time each day for 21 consecutive days. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that proactive personality significantly predicted career indecision and career maturity, even after controlling for valence and activation variability, neuroticism, age, and gender. Furthermore, affect spin moderated the associations of proactive personality with career indecision and maturity. The theoretical and practical implications of the moderating effects of affect spin are discussed.
